MONKEY DAY

Every year on December 14th National Monkey Day celebrates the unique characteristics of simians. The day also focuses on other non-human primates such as apes, tarsiers, and lemurs.

Monkeys, also known as simians, live all over the world. More than 260 species of monkeys populate Africa, Central America, South America, and Asia. They range in size from mere ounces like the pygmy marmoset to the mandrill at a heavier 80 pounds. Monkeys tend to walk on all four limbs. As a member of the primate family, they are considered a lesser ape. Most monkeys have a tail, though not all do. Monkeys are divided into two categories – Old World monkeys and New World monkeys.

Their personalities and habits capture the attention of humans on many levels. These intelligent mammals with opposable thumbs live in family groups, too. However, many species of monkeys are endangered. Some endangered species from around the world include:

  • Indri - Found in Madagascar, this lemur faces hunting due to hunting and deforestation.
  • Roloway monkey - This bearded monkey found in Cote D'Ivoire and Ghana lives in tropical forests. They're hunted for their meat.
  • Western chimpanzee - Another monkey threatened by hunting, it has a larger territory. They live in the rainforests and savannahs of western Africa.
  • Ecuadorian White-Fronted Capuchin - Locals hunt them because the White-fronted Capuchins threaten local crops. The Capuchins range through Ecuador and Peru.

Ochsner to build new children's hospital in New Orleans area thanks to Gayle Benson's big gift

By EMILY WOODRUFF

  • A rendering depicts the inside of The Gayle and Tom Benson Ochsner Children’s Hospital on Ochsner Health's Jefferson Highway campus

New Orleans will get a second standalone children’s hospital as Ochsner Health expands its pediatric footprint with a large donation from Gayle Benson, the health system announced on Wednesday.

The new 343,000-square-foot facility, called The Gayle and Tom Benson Ochsner Children’s Hospital, will include specialty pediatric services, a larger and more accessible emergency room, a Level IV surgical neonatal intensive care unit and enhanced operating rooms and imaging services.

The new hospital will be located next to Ochsner's main campus on Jefferson Highway. Officials say moving the system's pediatric department to a standalone building will allow them to recruit more specialized doctors, provide a better experience for families and compete with the likes of Texas Children's or Boston Children's hospitals.

Locally, the hospital will also help Ochsner more visibly compete for pediatric patients with LCMC Health, which recently spent $300 million overhauling their flagship children's hospital in Uptown New Orleans.

“This facility will enable us to care for more children, retain and attract top pediatric physicians and care teams, and continue to set the standard of care,” said Ochsner CEO Pete November.

The gift from Benson, one of the wealthiest people in Louisiana and the owner of the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, is the single largest gift Ochsner has ever received. Ochsner executives declined to give the value of the donation or ballpark how much the new facility will cost. However, the previous record for the largest single donation was set by Benson and her late husband when they donated $20 million to expand Ochsner’s Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center in 2015.

The new facility will sit between Jefferson Highway and River Road along Betz Avenue with the main entrance facing Jefferson Highway. To make room for it, Ochsner officials said parking lots and hospital-owned houses on Betz will be demolished. Renters living in those houses are all on short-term leases and have been given relocation packages and six months to vacate, said November.

Construction will start next year pending approval from the Jefferson Parish Planning Department to rezone the residential street for a hospital. Ochsner will also seek to purchase a block of Betz Avenue from the parish. Architects include the Houston-based HOK and Rozas Ward of New Orleans. Expected completion is late 2027.

Expanded patient care

Ochsner’s pediatrics program, made up of over 200 physicians in more than 30 pediatric specialties, provided care to about 100,000 patients in the last year. But the system also had to turn away patients because it did not have enough staffed beds, said Dr. Vincent Adolph, the chief medical officer of Ochsner Children’s Hospital.

“A third of the patients we might get a call about, we don’t have the capacity to take care of them,” said Adolph. “We have to ask those patients to get their care elsewhere.”

When the new hospital opens, Ochsner’s pediatric cardiovascular unit will expand from 12 to 20 beds. The 14-bed intensive care unit will expand to 20 beds, and another 14 to 16 beds will be added for step-down care once a patient graduates from the ICU or surgery.

The acute care area, which focuses on children with illnesses and injuries, will grow from 44 to 52 beds, with room to expand.

A new emergency room will be accessible from the street, and will be much larger, with 26 beds. Ochsner’s current pediatric emergency room has only eight beds, and is more difficult to get to inside the larger flagship hospital.

Because the pediatric hospital will be next to the main hospital, it will be easier for families with small infants to receive care if both the mother and newborn need treatment in an integrated delivery unit.

“If the mom is really sick, we have the highest level of adult ICU care here to complement the obstetric care,” said Adolph. “If the baby is sick, we will have all of the specialists needed to take care of the baby in the same facility.”

Currently, the closest integrated delivery unit is in Houston or Birmingham, said Adolph.

“As we think about competing with nationally ranked hospitals around the country, we want the experience to reflect the quality and safety that we provide, and this facility will allow that,” said Adolph.

Raising the profile

A big benefit of a new facility is a higher profile for Ochsner's pediatrics program in a region where many think of the Uptown Children’s Hospital when they think about specialized pediatric care.

“I think many of us in pediatrics here feel like, ‘Oh, everybody knows Ochsner is a good place, but they don’t know we do pediatrics,’” said Adolph. “But there’s actually a pretty long legacy of innovation in pediatrics here.”

Children’s Hospital New Orleans has long been the leading player in pediatric care and serves as a hub in the Gulf South region. The hospital also recently completed a 230,000-square-foot expansion. But Ochsner officials said there is a need for more.

“We’re not really focused on what they’re doing, or not doing, at children’s facilities around the state,” said Adolph. “We’re focused on growing our capacity to take better care of more and more patients.”

More specialty care

Ochsner’s plan follows a trend of children’s hospitals becoming more specialized. Profits have historically been lower at children’s hospitals, which have a higher payer mix of Medicaid vs. private insurance than adult hospitals. With advances in outpatient medical care, fewer kids need hospitalization.

However, children who do require hospitalization need highly specialized services and experts that aren’t typically available at smaller hospitals, said Dr. Michelle Macy, associate professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine and an attending physician of pediatric emergency medicine at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago. Even if New Orleans doesn’t have enough of a pediatric population to fill two full-service Children’s Hospitals, the surrounding areas may help keep the hospitals afloat.

“These children’s hospitals tend to become a destination for whatever specialties they take a lead in,” said Macy. “Even if there isn’t enough of a population that lives in New Orleans, they might have looked at the business in a broader region or around the country for whichever specialties they’re going to be putting forward there.”

It’s also beneficial for a hospital system to be established in patients’ minds as providing cradle-to-grave care.

“They want to be able to have that full line of coverage for the entire population,” said Macy.

‘First-ever’ Taylor Swift Convention coming to New Orleans

by: Kenny Lopez

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Dec. 13 happens to be pop superstar Taylor Swift’s 34th birthday. In celebration, organizers of the first-ever Taylor Swift convention, which will be in New Orleans, gave WGNO’s Kenny Lopez a preview of what’s in store for the “Swiftie Convention.”

“Swiftie” and convention organizer Rebecca Fox is spinning and shaking with excitement and anticipation for the first-ever Taylor Swift convention in New Orleans from Oct. 24, 2024, to Oct. 28, 2024.

New Orleans pizzeria offering free pizza for a year in exchange for Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets

The convention will take place at the Holiday Inn Downtown-Superdome.

The convention will coincide with Taylor Swift’s three “Eras” tour shows at the Superdome on Oct. 25, 26 and 27 in 2024.

“As far as I know, it is the first ‘Swiftie’ Convention ever, like in the whole world,” she said.

Organizers say 700 “Swifties” booked for the hotel that weekend, and a total of 1,500 fans are joining in on the Taylor Swift-themed events.

The convention will include a “Swiftie” second line parade, a “Swiftie” streetcar ride, trivia, scavenger hunts, breakfast, brunch, a dance party, a pajama party, a karaoke party, a pool party, a friendship bracelet-making party and more.

There will also be Taylor Swift-themed food and drinks during the convention.

“There are so many activities for Swifties of all ages and we’re so excited about it. There’s a lot of people coming in from all over the world,” Fox said.

At the convention, there will also be plenty of “Swift Swag” as auction items and contest prizes.

“We have signed vinyl and signed CDs. We have the ‘Lover’ vinyl, which is extremely rare, and valued at $750,” she said.

Fox went on to say, “We also have her ‘Wonderstruck’ perfume which is very rare and out of stock.”

“Back in the day, Taylor Swift had a doll that was sold at Big Lots for $5, but now the dolls are worth $200,” Fox said.

All of the Taylor Swift convention events are open to the public, but you will need a ticket to get in.

Holiday Inn Downtown-Superdome Director of Sales and Marketing Nicole Dubuclet said, “This is a great opportunity for the City of New Orleans, as well as the hotel. This puts our hotel on another level because we are super close to the Superdome, and I don’t think people realize how close we are. To be able to host an event for Taylor Swift is phenomenal. Very magical, and I think they will have fun.”

It'll be a wet, windy weekend across Louisiana. Here's the forecast for your area.

By KASEY BUBNASH

If your weekend plans involve the outdoors — and especially if they involve boating — you might want to reconsider. It's shaping up to be a wet and windy weekend in southern Louisiana, according to the National Weather Service of New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

High easterly winds are expected to pick up Friday, with gusts of 30 to 45 mph possible in New Orleans and elsewhere south of Lake Pontchartrain. Forecasters said the gusty winds could cause issues on elevated roadways and with loose holiday decorations.

Windy conditions are expected to continue Saturday, along with some showers and thunderstorms.

"Very hazardous" boating conditions are also expected in all waters throughout the region over the weekend as an area of low pressure moves through the Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Weather Service, and boaters with smaller crafts are encouraged to avoid the water.

Here's the forecast in your area:

New Orleans

Friday: Breezy winds are expected to start up Friday, with sustained speeds of around 20 mph and gusts of up to 30 mph. Temperatures should max out in the low 60s and dip into the mid 50s overnight.

Saturday: There's a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon, along with breezy winds of around 20 mph. A daytime high of around 63 degrees is expected, along with a nighttime low of 53. Showers and breezy winds could continue through the night.

Sunday: Showers are possible before noon, alongside winds of up to 20 mph. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach around 60 degrees and dip into the high 40s overnight.

Baton Rouge

Friday: It shouldn't be quite as windy in the Baton Rouge area, where east winds of about 15 mph are expected to pick up on Friday. Temperatures should reach around 66 degrees that day before dropping into the low 50s that night. Showers are possible after midnight.

Saturday: There's a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday, and winds of around 15 mph should continue through the day and night. A daytime high of around 62 degrees is expected, along with a nighttime low of 51 degrees.

Sunday: Rain is possible again Sunday, mostly before noon, as are winds of about 15 mph. Temperatures are expected to max out around 60 degrees that day before dropping into the mid 40s overnight.

Lafayette

Friday: High easterly winds are expected to pick up in Lafayette Friday, with sustained speeds of around 15 mph and gusts of up to 20 mph possible. Daytime highs should reach around 67 degrees, and overnight lows are expected to dip into the low 50s. There's a 30% chance of showers after midnight.

Saturday: There's a 60% of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, along with gusty winds of up to 20 mph and daytime highs in the low 60s. Showers are expected to continue through the night, when temperatures will likely dip into the high 40s.

Sunday: Showers could continue Sunday morning, along with gusty winds of up to 25 mph. Daytime highs should reach around 60 degrees and nighttime lows could dip into the low to mid 40s.

Shreveport

Friday: Shreveport should be mostly unscathed by the intense winds that are expected in other parts of Louisiana. Winds of about 10 mph are expected Friday, along with daytime highs in the mid 60s and nighttime lows in the 50s. Showers are expected to start up that night.

Saturday: Showers are expected to continue through the day and night Saturday, when temperatures should reach around 56 degrees and dip to around 43 degrees overnight.

Sunday: Sunday should be mostly sunny, with a high near 60 and a low around 40 degrees.

What does "antediluvian" mean?

Ancient

antediluvian Pronunciation: an-tee-di-loo-vee-uhn

Definition: referring to or belonging to the time before the biblical flood described in the Old Testament; extremely old-fashioned or outdated.

Origin: The word "antediluvian" is derived from the Latin term "ante" meaning "before" and "diluvium" meaning "flood." It was first used in the early 17th century to describe the period before the Great Flood as described in the story of Noah's Ark.

Example: The archaeologist uncovered an antediluvian artifact dating back thousands of years.

Ancient: "Antediluvian" means ancient, particularly referring to the period before the biblical flood. It encompasses the time and objects that existed before the catastrophic event described in religious texts. The term can also be used metaphorically to describe something extremely old-fashioned or outdated, suggesting a sense of being out of touch with modern times. Its usage extends beyond mere age and is often employed to convey a sense of the profound passage of time and the significance of historical context.

Luciano Leães

Luciano Leães is the foremost and most active musician associated with R&B and New Orleans Piano in Brazil, and quite possibly in all of Latin America. In the words of Bob Lohr, pianist for guitarist Chuck Berry for over a decade, "Luciano is one of these amazing artists who play blues, R&B, and New Orleans-style keyboards with exceptional expertise and soul. After hearing him, you’ll be compelled to do one of two things: (1) quit or (2) practice tirelessly to catch up. He's undoubtedly one of the most exceptional figures on the scene."

In late 2022, Leães unveiled his single "Fessta Brasilis," marking a fusion of his existing style with elements of Brazilian and South American music. The global release took place on WWOZ with a live interview on Missy Bowen's New Orleans Music Show, followed by a performance at a sold-out Maple Leaf Back Bar Piano Sessions. The single featured Leães's ensemble and welcomed distinguished New Orleans musicians, including John Fohl, Kirk Joseph, and Lionel Batiste Jr.

By August 2022, Leães had already released his album "Live at Pianistico" in a packed Santa Casa theater. British journalist and photographer Adam Kennedy characterized the album in his article in Blues Matters magazine as "not only one of the rare live albums released during the Covid-19 era but also one of the most original concert recordings of recent times."

While Leães is celebrated as one of Brazil's top pianists, he has earned the moniker "Brazilian Professor" abroad, a nod to jazz and blues icon Professor Longhair. This accolade was bestowed upon him by the esteemed British magazine Blues Matters! Magazine in an interview with the pianist.

A Look at the Most Niche and Nonsensical Records in Guinness World Records

Guinness World Records is known for its extensive collection of records that cover a wide range of categories. From the tallest building to the fastest car, there's a record for almost everything. But what about the records that are so niche or nonsensical that they leave you scratching your head? In this blog post, we'll take a look at some of the most bizarre records in Guinness World Records.

Longest fingernails (ever)

Lee Redmond from the USA holds the record for the longest fingernails ever recorded on a pair of hands. Her nails measured a total of 8.65 meters (28 feet 4.5 inches) and had taken her over 30 years to grow. While this record might seem impressive, it's also quite impractical. Redmond had to take extra care when doing everyday tasks like washing dishes or typing on a keyboard. She also had to avoid any activities that might cause her nails to break, such as sports or manual labor.

Most people dressed as Smurfs

In 2017, a group of 2,762 people dressed up as Smurfs in an attempt to break the record for "most people dressed as Smurfs". The event took place in Landerneau, France, and was organized by the Association Les Schtroumpfs en Folie. The previous record had been set in Germany in 2009, with 2,510 people dressed as Smurfs. While this record might seem silly, it's a testament to the power of community and the joy that can come from dressing up and letting loose.

Most T-shirts worn at once

The record for most T-shirts worn at once is held by Sanath Bandara from Sri Lanka. He managed to squeeze into an incredible 257 T-shirts in 2011, breaking the previous record of 155. While this might seem like a fun challenge to attempt, it's important to note that wearing multiple layers of clothing can be dangerous, especially in hot weather. It's also important to consider the environmental impact of buying and disposing of so many T-shirts.

Longest time spent in direct contact with ice

Wim Hof, a Dutch extreme athlete, holds the record for the longest time spent in direct contact with ice. He managed to stay submerged in a container filled with ice cubes for 1 hour, 52 minutes and 42 seconds in 2008. Hof is known for his ability to withstand extreme cold and has set several records related to cold exposure. While this might seem like a superhuman feat, it's important to note that extreme cold can be very dangerous and should not be attempted without proper training and supervision.

At one stage of Wednesday’s second half it appeared as though Brandon Ingram and Naji Marshall might both threaten their NBA career highs in scoring. Prior to that, New Orleans set a team record by registering 47 points in the second quarter, the most ever by the Pelicans in that period. Then Trey Murphy started raining deep threes from everywhere on the Capital One Arena hardwood. It was a prolific night to say the least for New Orleans in its annual visit to the nation’s capital, as the Pelicans generated big offensive numbers against Washington. The Pelicans finished with their most points in a game in over 2 1/2 years, since racking up 144 at Memphis on Feb. 16, 2021.

So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.

WICKED, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” WICKED has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” Time Magazine cheers, “if every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.” From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, WICKED—the untold true story of the Witches of Oz—transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. It will send your spirits soaring to heights you’ll never forget.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens in a New Adaptation by Patrick Barlow

Join us as we bring to life the classic tale of 'A Christmas Carol' at the Marquette Theatre on the Loyola campus.

About the Event

Celebrate the holiday season with Crescent City Stage in what we hope becomes a new annual tradition.

The Performance

Patrick Barlow, writer of the Broadway and West End hit The 39 Steps, has retold Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. This thrilling adaptation uses only five actors to bring some of Dickens' most beloved characters to life. From Scrooge and Tiny Tim to Bob Cratchit and Mrs. Fezziwig, Barlow's A Christmas Carol uses nothing more than some simple props, fresh physicality, and the power of imagination to convey this timeless story of redemption. Witness Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from a stingy miser to a man who generously celebrates the spirit of the season all year long, in this highly theatrical adaptation.

Join us for A Christmas Carol!

NATIONAL BOUILLABAISSE DAY

National Bouillabaisse Day on December 14th gives seafood lovers everywhere a reason to celebrate. This flavorful fish stew hits the spot on cold winter’s day, too.

The French are known for many great recipes. Their food inspires travel to France for a taste of authentic dishes. Bouillabaisse tops the list of must-have cuisine while visiting France. The tasty stew originates in the port city of Marseille. It is traditionally made using bony rockfish, saffron, fennel seed, and orange zest.

However, in the culinary world, strong opinions bounce around about the proper ingredients for an authentic bouillabaisse. Those opinions include the type of fish. Typically, cooks use red rascasse, sea robin, or European conger. They also debate the type of wine (red or white). Both topics are hotly debated. They even argue about the soup’s origins. Did a Greek goddess create the stew? Or does the credit belong to coastal fishermen who threw the ingredients together from unsold bony rockfish? Perhaps these spicy debates add a little flavor to the stew, too. Your guess is as good as ours.

  • Regardless, cooks use a variety of fresh fish as their first step to a delicious bouillabaisse. It is especially important if you can’t get to the south of France to order it made for you.

1902

The first trans-pacific cable line is completed by the Commercial Cable Company. It connected San Francisco, CA to Honolulu, HI.

1911

The first team of explorers reaches the South Pole. Roald Amundsen and his team left his base camp at Antarctica's Bay of Whales in October using sleigh dogs. The team arrived at the pole ahead of Robert F. Scott by more than a month.

1968

Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" is #1 on the music charts. Interestingly, several other artists recorded the song, too. Smokey Robinson & the Miracles recorded the song in 1966. However, it wasn't released until 1968, the same year as Marvin Gaye's version. Others who have recorded the song include Gladys Knight & the Pips and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The song was written by Barret Strong and Norman Whitfield.

1986

Pilots Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager take off from Edwards Air Force Base in Voyager. Burt Rutan designed the honeycombed, lightweight aircraft from composite materials. The design allowed the plane to carry more fuel. As a result, the pilots completed the nonstop flight around the world without refueling in 9 days.

Most people playing Monopoly simultaneously

In 2013, 605 people gathered in Singapore to break the record for "most people playing Monopoly simultaneously". The event was organized by the Singapore Sports Hub and saw participants playing the classic board game for over 2 hours. While this might seem like a fun way to spend an afternoon, it's also a reminder of the enduring popularity of board games and the sense of community that they can create.

Longest time balancing a lawnmower on the chin

Ashrita Furman from the USA holds the record for the longest time balancing a lawnmower on the chin. He managed to balance the 23 kg (50 lb) lawnmower for 3 minutes and 40 seconds in 2010. While this might seem like a strange and difficult record to attempt, it's also a reminder of the incredible physical feats that humans are capable of.

Most people playing a single piano

In 2013, 666 people gathered in Philadelphia to break the record for "most people playing a single piano". The event was organized by the Philadelphia Orchestra and saw participants playing a specially designed piano for over 5 minutes. While this might seem like a silly record to attempt, it's also a reminder of the power of music to bring people together and create a sense of community.

Largest collection of rubber ducks

The largest collection of rubber ducks belongs to Charlotte Lee from the USA, who has amassed over 6,000 rubber ducks since 1996. While this might seem like an odd thing to collect, it's also a reminder of the joy that can come from simple pleasures and the importance of finding hobbies that bring you happiness.

While some of the records in Guinness World Records might seem niche or nonsensical, they are also a reminder of the incredible diversity of human interests and abilities. Whether it's dressing up as Smurfs or balancing a lawnmower on your chin, these records inspire us to push ourselves to new limits and find joy in the things that make us unique. So go ahead and try something that might seem silly or impractical – you never know, it might just earn you a place in the record books.

City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks

Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour

New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.

“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”

Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.

Highlights this year include:

2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays

Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included

Multiple dedicated Bike Nights

Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”

Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate

Holiday-themed Storyland

Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship

New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland

“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”

City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

130 Roosevelt Way New Orleans, LA, United States, Louisiana 70112

5PM

During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.

Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.

Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.

“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.

This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.

The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.

The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

Often called "the father of Art Deco," Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté, was the central figure of the art and design evolution that emerged during the 1920s. The look featured stylized forms, geometric patterns, vibrant colors and sleek lines. Its influence flooded the world of art, fashion, architecture, furniture design, serviceware and more.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."

The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.

“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”

“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”

Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb.  Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.

“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."

“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

JACKSONVILLE STATE GAMECOCKS AND LOUISIANA RAGIN' CAJUNS ACCEPT INVITATIONS TO 2023 R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns accepted invitations today to compete in the 23rd Annual R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Saturday, December 16 at the Caesars Superdome. The game will kick off at 1:15 p.m. CST and will air on ESPN and ESPN Radio.

“On behalf of the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Committee and staff, it is a pleasure to host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in New Orleans for this year’s game,” said R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Chairman Sheriff Paul Valteau. “We look forward to an exciting game and a week full of celebrations for these outstanding programs.”

Jacksonville State finished its final year of transition to FBS with an 8-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in Conference USA play. This will be the Gamecocks’ first bowl appearance in program history.

“We are excited to be headed to New Orleans to represent Jax State in its first ever bowl game,” Head Coach Rich Rodriguez said. “I’m happy for our team, especially our seniors, for earning this opportunity in our first season in FBS. It will be a great week and experience for our players, staff and fans.”

Jacksonville State is one of only eight teams since 1970 to win at least eight games in its first season playing an FBS schedule. The Gamecocks finished third in Conference USA, falling to New Mexico State (10-4, 7-1) and Liberty (13-0, 8-0), who met in the CUSA championship game on Friday.

Under Head Coach Rich Rodriguez, the Gamecocks ranked second in CUSA in rushing, averaging 232.2 yards per game. Redshirt senior running back Malik Jackson ranks second in the league in rushing yards per game, and his 6.4 yards per carry was best in the conference.

Jacksonville State averaged 29.8 points per game, tied for third-best in the conference.

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns concluded the regular season with a 6-6 overall record and 3-5 in the Sun Belt, making them bowl eligible for the sixth straight year, a record for the program.

“We are excited to make the trip to New Orleans and play in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl,” Head Coach Michael Desormeaux said. “The New Orleans Bowl Committee puts on a great event for our student-athletes, and we are looking forward to playing a great opponent in Jacksonville State.”

Louisiana’s rushing attack is also formidable, averaging 182.7 yards per game, second-best in the Sun Belt. The Cajuns’ 32.3 points per game ranks fourth in the league. The Cajuns are outstanding on special teams, with coverage units that lead the SBC in kick return and punt return yardage allowed.

Louisiana will make its record seventh R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl appearance. Its five wins are the most in the game’s history.

METAIRIE – Matthew Ghergich, a New Orleans businessman and children’s book writer, will read from his debut book Dixie the Cajun Fiddle Playing Pixie during a special story time at the East Bank Regional Library (4747 West Napoleon Ave, Metairie) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16. Animated figures from the Louisiana-themed book will be developed as licensed characters at the planned Bayou Phoenix entertainment complex in New Orleans East.

The event is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration.

Dixie the Cajun Fiddle Playing Pixie is a tale that centers upon a beautiful Cajun fairy princess with luminous, gossamer wings who communicates through her fiddle playing. Dixie’s fiddle not only allows her to charm audience with its magical tones but the stringed instrument is also the source of wondrous powers that enable her to protect and care for the residents of Pixie Parish. Dixie is discovered deep in the Manchac Swamp by Yats and his Famous New Orleans Jazzland Band. She helps the musicians find their way back home after the band members are washed into the wilderness following a hurricane.

Ghergich says his love of Louisiana derives from his family’s long heritage in the state. His grandfather founded the Yellow Cab Company in New Orleans in 1924 on Annunciation Street. The site ultimately became the headquarters for the Grayline Tour Bus company. In addition to serving as branded characters for Bayou Phoenix, Ghergich has plans to develop his children’s books into animated feature films.

Bayou Phoenix took control of the abandoned 227-acre Six Flags site in October 2023 with plans to turn the former theme park into indoor/outdoor water parks, youth sporting facilities, two hotels, an 8.5-acre clear lake for swimming, a movie studio, amphitheater, retail outlets and other amenities. The targeted opening year is 2025.

Additional children’s events planned for Saturday, December 16, include a hands-on craft session at 10 am and Reading to Rover at 1 pm. This literacy-improvement program allows beginner or reluctant readers to read aloud to animal assisted therapy dogs courtesy of the Visiting Pet Program.

DELFEAYO MARSALIS

& The Uptown Jazz Orchestra

EVERY WEDNESDAY in DECEMBER!

That's right!  After nearly 4 years, Delfeayo and the Big Band return home to Wednesdays at Snug Harbor!

Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers, and producers in jazz today. Known for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor…” (Los Angeles Times), he is “…one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation.” (San Francisco Examiner).

Early influences on Delfeayo's style include J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Al Grey, Tyree Glenn, Tommy Dorsey, and Duke Ellington’s trombone masters. From the age of 17 until the present, he has produced over 100 recordings for major artists, including Harry Connick Jr, Spike Lee, Terence Blanchard, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and his father and brothers.

In January 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton, and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor – a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, thus dubbing them

"America's First Family of Jazz."

On packing a full jazz orchestra into a tiny historic jazz club: "Whatever you have to do," the trombonist says philosophically. But when the band plays the swing and bebop hits from the 1930s through the 1960s, the music is just as tight. From Mardi Gras music to modern jazz, this band does it all.

An intimate experience like no other!

Shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm.

Doors at 7:00pm & 9:00pm.

Exciting news from the Office of Lt. Governor and the Office of Tourism! We're thrilled to announce the stunning new design for our float as we gear up for our 3rd year in the 2024 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language." Our float features a larger-than-life Mardi Gras jester, fleur de lis, second-line inspired umbrellas, and lots of purple, green, and gold.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Professor Carl Nivale

Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!

#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique

https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...

A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.

Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.

What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.

  • This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
  • The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.

What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
