NATIONAL REACH AS HIGH AS YOU CAN DAY
National Reach as High as You Can Day on April 14th encourages us to evaluate our goals and do our best to reach them.

We can define “reach” in many ways. Search Guinness World Records for highest reach and Guinness gives us 322 results. We can reach for our dreams or our goals. Reach for the stars or the sky. We can even reach for the balloon floating away from us much like the one that carried the Wizard of Oz away from Dorothy.
Of course, records can be set for the oldest or the youngest to reach a particular location, age, height or status.
While this day may not be about setting records, it is certainly about reaching high; higher than we think we can. We often become complacent. National Reach as High as You Can Day is just a reminder on the calendar not to let your dreams go adrift. Reach for them. Reach as high as you can!
New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center
Wins Prestigious “Love Your City Award,”
Honoring Sustainability Commitments

LifeCity, an initiative that supports economic development in key areas like housing, food, and stormwater management, has awarded the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center a “Love Your City Award” in the Best Overall category at an awards ceremony held on March 31. The awards highlight individuals and organizations that assess, improve, and address their impact in their communities through reductions in energy use, contributions to the local economy, commitments to providing equitable opportunities for all, and more.

This marks the first award received by the Convention Center in the 10-year history of this event. The Best Overall was awarded to the Convention Center for improvements to its energy usage, waste reduction efforts, new green infrastructure, and more. In total, 10 areas of impact were measured and judged by a panel who deemed the Convention Center to be one of the best companies in New Orleans in their commitments to the sustainability of their facility and the environmental health of New Orleans. The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center’s Director of Sustainability, Linda Baynham, spearheads these initiatives.

“This award celebrates our determination to reduce our impact on the environment. It is not only important to our community but expected by our clients who bring thousands of visitors to New Orleans annually,” says Convention Center President, Michael J. Sawaya. “The kind of cutting-edge improvements we are making, such as our change to LED lights in the our exhibit halls, or the construction of our new environmentally-friendly pedestrian park, means that our ambitious $557 million dollar Capital Improvement Plan is already paying dividends for us and the entire city of New Orleans.”

Proceeds from the 2022 Love Your City Awards Gala were donated to the New Orleans East-based VEGGI Farmers Cooperative to assist in flood prevention efforts.

Queen Nefertari’s Egypt
New Orleans Museum of Art

Public

The queen is coming.  "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view March 18–July 17, 2022, at NOMA.

Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Micro Pharms
Business owner and entrepreneurial mastermind, Christopher Pham founded Micro Pharms back in 2020 when he started growing microgreens in his apartment. Why microgreens? It’s simple– Chris just wanted to develop a healthier lifestyle for himself. When the pandemic hit and many of his restaurant clients stopped taking orders, Chris had to think of a new way to repurpose his microgreens, so he started developing value added products like micro-kimchi, chili oils, and dried spice and seasoning blends like his Asian Chicken Cajun Fry Mix (also great with fried vegetables!). Chris’s main goal with his value added products is to uplift his Asian culture and heritage while bringing a fun and playful energy to his brand. You might have even noticed Gazpacho, the red microgreen mascot that accompanies all of Chris’ packaging and labels. In the coming months, Chris is looking forward to expanding his offerings to frozen prepared foods like dumplings. Check out Micro Pharms at the Thursday Mid-City Market or the Sunday City Park Market!

Pianist and Composer Jon Cowherd returns to New Orleans
with his Mercy Project on Thursday, April 14th

The Kentucky-raised, New Orleans-schooled, New York-based Jon Cowherd is best known for his long- running partnership with Louisiana-bred drummer/bandleader Brian Blade, with whom he co-founded the Grammy nominated Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band, whose acclaimed, influential albums showcase Cowherd's stellar keyboard work and singular compositional skills. When not recording and touring with the Fellowship, Cowherd has worked extensively with a broad array of players and singers from the jazz, pop and rock worlds including Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, Brandi Carlile, KD Lang, Rosanne Cash, Iggy Pop, Cassandra Wilson, John Scofield and Lizz Wright.

In 2013, ArtistShare and Blue Note Records released Cowherd’s first album as a leader, “Mercy,” which features Bill Frisell, John Patitucci and Brian Blade. Cowherd and Blade also directed the all star Joni Mitchell tribute, “Joni 75,” along with such artists as Brandi Carlile, Glen Hans-rd, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Chaka Khan, Diana Krall, Kris Kristofferson, Los Lobos with Marisoul, Graham Nash, Seal, James Taylor and Rufus Wainwright.

In 2017, Cowherd released a new recording on the vinyl-only Newvelle Records label; “Gateway” consists of 7 compositions by Cowherd and one from Brian Blade, and features Steve Cardenas and Tony Scherr.

As an arranger, Cowherd has scored for big band, strings and symphony orchestra for Brandi Carlile, Cassandra Wilson, Lizz Wright, the Fellowship Band and the Shreveport Symphony and the Loyola University Symphony Orchestra.

Other current touring projects include Alicia Olatuja, Nate Smith and Kinfolk, Tom Guarna’s Wishing Stones project and a new project with John Scofield touring in the Spring & Summer 2022 called “Yankee Go Home.”

About the Exhibition
You can feel it coming. A marching band cadence echoes from a mile away. Pounding drums and bright feathers flare from the Mardi Gras Indians just up the block. Months of painstaking glittering, marching, beadwork, and brushstrokes have led up to this moment, and you are ready to burst into the street. It’s Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
On January 6, 2022, The Historic New Orleans Collection’s Making Mardi Gras exhibition rambles its way into the museum's French Quarter galleries. This showstopping display invites visitors into the sprawling dens, late-night sewing sessions, and sweaty dance rehearsals where “The Greatest Free Show on Earth” is created and re-created each year among the city’s diverse communities. Explore the vibrant expression that only Carnival season can muster, as we meet up with 19th-century float artists, dawn-breaking skeleton gangs, and homebound house-float creators—stopping to admire costumes, royalty, and hand-painted coconuts.
This is the Mardi Gras that happens before we're watching, the Carnival that will wind through the city on Fat Tuesday, far from the intemperate Bourbon Street scene. Catch it before it passes.
This exhibition is generously sponsored by Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World and Kern Studios.
NATIONAL PECAN DAY
Each year, National Pecan Day on April 14th celebrates one nut native to the United States. It’s also a favorite snack and ingredient across the country.

A member of the hickory family, the pecan is native to central and southern United States. “Pecan” is an Algonquian word, meaning a nut requiring a stone to crack. They are an excellent source of copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc, and vitamin E. Pecans can help reduce LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol levels in the blood. They are also rich in dietary fiber.
Pecans make great snacks all on their own, but they also make terrific garnishes for other foods such as desserts, salads, or the main meal. Sweet or savory, pecans can add a little glamor to a dish or be the star of the show.
INTERNATIONAL LAVERBREAD DAY
On April 14th, discover a nutritious ingredient that comes from the sea. International Laverbread Day celebrates this food with a long history made from seaweed.
Laverbread is the cooked version of ‘laver’ – porphyra seaweed – a diaphanous red algae found abundantly along Wales’ rocky coastline. For centuries, the Welsh have traditionally cooked laver to make laverbread, also called bara lawr and Welshman’s caviar. Not to be confused with sliced bread, laverbread is prepared by cooking the seaweed and creating green gluey sludge. So what’s appetizing about that? Well, for some, laverbread is considered a delicacy. For others, it may be an acquired taste. And still, for others, it’s neither acquired nor a delicacy.
However, laverbread can be added to various recipes. Despite the long cooking time, (8 hours!) laverbread enhances the flavor with a salty sea taste. Add laverbread to soups, dried and crumbled over vegetables, salads, eggs, and even baked into bread. Traditionally, the Welsh roll laverbread in oatmeal before frying or spreading it on toast.
Humans have been consuming seaweed for thousands of years, including laver. Since laver contains more vitamins and minerals than any land-based vegetable, it makes a healthy addition to any meal.
Future Food
Laver also produces 80 percent of the world’s oxygen, earning it the nickname “Lungs of the World.” So this “future food” checks all the boxes for sustainability, too.
  • Requires no land
  • Requires no freshwater
  • Grows up to 20 times faster than traditional crops
  • Requires no pesticides
What more could you ask for when shopping for Earth-friendly food? On International Laverbread Day, celebrate the history, heritage, and benefits of laver.

Remembering New Orleans Recording Legend Cosimo Matassa born in New Orleans on this day 96 years ago on April 13, 1926.
In 1944 he began studies as a chemistry major at Tulane University, which he abandoned after completing five semesters of course work. In 1945, at the age of 18, Matassa opened the J&M Recording Studio at the back of his family’s shop on Rampart Street, in the French Quarter of New Orleans. In 1955, he moved to the larger Cosimo Recording Studio on Gov. Nichols Street, nearby in the French Quarter.
As an engineer and proprietor, Matassa was crucial to the development of the sound of R&B, rock and soul of the 1950s and 1960s, often working with the producers Dave Bartholomew and Allen Toussaint. He recorded many hits, including Fats Domino’s "The Fat Man" (a contender for the first rock and roll record), Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti", and records by Ray Charles, Lee Dorsey, Dr. John, Smiley Lewis, Bobby Mitchell, Tommy Ridgley, the Spiders and many others. He was responsible for developing what became known as the New Orleans sound, with strong drums, heavy guitar and bass, heavy piano, light horns and a strong vocal lead. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Matassa also managed the successful white Baton Rouge rock-and-roll performer Jimmy Clanton.
Matassa retired from the music business in the 1980s to manage the family's food store, Matassa's Market, in the French Quarter. He died on September 11, 2014, at age 88 in New Orleans

Fit for a King: The Rex Archives at THNOC
January 15–May 8, 2022

Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street, 2nd Floor
Admission is free.
About the Exhibition
Since 1872, revelers on Mardi Gras Day have danced to the tune “If Ever I Cease to Love” and waved to the self-proclaimed “King of Carnival” as the Rex parade wound its way through the city of New Orleans. To mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Rex, The Historic New Orleans Collection unveils Fit for a King, an exhibition showcasing jewels, favors, doubloons, float designs, and more from THNOC’s Rex-related holdings, which number in the thousands.
Presented in conjunction with the large-scale Making Mardi Gras exhibition at 520 Royal Street, Fit for a King is part of THNOC’s spring exploration of the creativity that Carnival season conjures.

"Rex: The 150th Anniversary of the School of Design"

Feb 2 - Dec 11
All day

Louisiana State Museum exhibition of artifacts, focusing on the costumes of the krewe’s royals, with newly discovered treasures recently acquired from European collections.

The Louisiana State Museum is preparing a major exhibition to open in the Presbytère Museum on February 1, 2022, commemorating the milestone 150th anniversary of the Rex Organization, the foremost New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe. Since its founding in 1872, Rex has taken on an unparalleled leadership role in Carnival, setting the standard of excellence for the dozens of krewes formed since and even inspiring the formation of similar civic organizations in other states. The Rex parade was the first daytime parade in modern Carnival, and the man selected as the monarch of the organization, known also by its incorporated name, the School of Design, serves as the King of all New Orleans Carnival.
The exhibition will tell the story of Rex using the Louisiana State Museum’s unrivaled collection of artifacts, heavily focusing on the sophisticated costumes of the krewe’s kings, queens, and courtiers. The Museum has always prioritized preserving the artifacts of Rex and made a concerted effort beginning in the 1920s to gather costumes directly from krewe members. This collection now totals over 60 royalty and krewe costumes and gowns as well as dozens of sets of rare crown jewels. The exhibition will also feature newly discovered treasures from the krewe’s past, recently acquired from European collections, along with rarely seen artifacts borrowed from private and institutional collections.
The exhibition will also discuss the vital civic function that the krewe has always performed since it was founded in part to boost economic development in the city during the tumultuous years of Reconstruction following the Civil War. After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, Rex assumed a crucial philanthropic mission through its Pro Bono Publico Foundation, to date funneling over $10 million to the New Orleans Public School system through the contributions of the krewe’s members. Numerous kings and queens of the krewe have been honored by municipal and humanitarian organizations for their broad-ranging support of essential community causes.

An exciting feature of the exhibition will be a float built inside the Museum by the krewe’s float builder, Royal Artists, demonstrating the techniques and materials used to construct the elaborate historically-inspired floats for Rex. Rare vintage films of Rex parades of decades ago will bring the spectacle to life, and lively time-lapse video showing the float-building process will shine a spotlight on the creativity and skill that go into crafting these rolling tableaux.

A host of complementary educational programs and lectures are being planned, including hands-on activity days for families as well as sensory-friendly programs for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Friday Night Wine School - Classic Loire
Fri Apr 15, 2022
5:30 PM - 8:00 PM CDT
For me, no wine region shouts "springtime!" like the Loire Valley. From crisp mineral-driven whites and sparkling wines to fresh, savory mouth-watering reds, it is the largest wine region of France and also happens to produce some of the most approachable, easy drinking wines in the world.

Besides being one of the most picturesque areas of the world, the 600 mile stretch of the Loire River offers many different terroirs and climate zones as it runs from the center of France to the Atlantic. Based on those different zones, the region is divided into multiple sub regions and this Friday, David Sobiesk will take you on a journey along the river, exploring the regions, terroirs, grape varieties and their wines. For more information on the Loire Valley sub regions, the wines we will present and/or to make a reservation, please go to Classic Loire

Dew Drop Inn Announces Spring Concert Series
 In Mandeville
The historic Dew Drop Jazz & Social Hall in Mandeville, built in 1895, is back this spring with a full season of concerts presenting traditional jazz and blues, funky swamp pop and Cajun music—with a few surprises along the way. For the six Saturday night evening concerts a variety of genres will be showcased by some of the region’s most notable musicians.
March 5 | Dr. Redwine’s Grape Stompers, led by acclaimed clarinetist Ben Redwine, will make their Dew Drop debut with a tribute to famed New Orleans clarinetist Barney Bigard, who toured for years with Louis Armstrong. Redwine and his band will recreate the music of the Dew Drop’s heyday and will be joined by several swing dancers who will kick off the season in a unique and joyful way.
March 19 | Jazz vocalist Ingrid Lucia and her all-star band will present a special evening of vintage jazz and blues, with music from the 1920s and 30s, along with new, original tunes. Lucia’s voice takes listeners back to a bygone era, while her distinct phrasing notes a more classic jazz ambience that is both appealing & enthusiastic.
April 2 | Camile Baudoin & Friends, reliving a few Radiators classics and new music too with celebrated musicians Reggie Scanlan, Frank Bua & John Fohl all together on one stage making this special concert one to remember for a long, long time!
April 16 | Gregg Stafford & His Jazz Hounds, led by renowned Preservation Hall musician and educator Gregg Stafford, will present a night deeply steeped in traditional New Orleans jazz.
May 14 | The unique jazz folk stylings define Sarah Quintana & Friends. A singer-songwriter from New Orleans with a background rich in jazz, folk and popular music, Quintana is a devoted guitarist with a voice that is instantly recognizable. Her versatility has led her from singing on the streets of Provence with a traveling circus to the stages of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and even New York’s Lincoln Center with a swing band.
May 21 | Two unique bands will perform one set each, starting with Doucet Frères, featuring the famed brother duo of Michael and David Doucet, of the Grammy-Award winning Cajun band, BeauSoleil. The Doucet family name is known for making Cajun music a popular genre within the world music scene. The second set will showcase Michael Doucet’s new Cajun dance band, Lâcher Prise Trio, with Doucet on fiddle, and both Sarah Quintana and Chad Viator on guitar. The name Lâcher Prise means to “let go” and blends Cajun, swamp soul, and Gypsy tunes that celebrate love and the simple joys of having a good time.
Presented by the Friends of the Dew Drop, these six Saturday evening concerts will run from 6:30 to 9:00p.m. and will feature home-cooked food for purchase provided by the Ladies of First Free Mission Baptist Church, located next door. No outside food, drinks or pets are allowed and lawn chairs may be used outside the hall on the grounds.
The history of the Dew Drop Inn begins in 1885 when a group of civic-minded African American residents of the Mandeville, led by the late Olivia Eunio, created the Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Association. A decade later, in 1895, the organization laid a cornerstone and constructed a small wooden building two and one-half blocks from Lake Pontchartrain on Lamarque Street.
The Association, like many created among African American residents following the Civil War, had chiefly benevolent goals—to care for the sick, provide help with funeral arrangements, food & temporary housing—all during a time when Black residents could not obtain various types of insurance. Today, known as one of the oldest, unaltered rural jazz halls in the U.S. the not-for-profit organization, Friends of the Dew Drop, schedules and manages the hall’s performances and educational activities.

Chris Owens Easter Sunday Parade Celebrates Her Legacy

As a loving tribute to the late Bourbon Street performer, club owner and entrepreneur, Chris Owens, the 37th Annual French Quarter Easter Parade will ride through the city streets for all to enjoy. Although this New Orleans tradition, which started back in the 1980's, was sadly postponed for the past two years due to the pandemic, family and friends are welcomed to join the festivities and frolic in the Easter fun on Sunday, April 17 beginning at the corner of St. Louis and Royal Streets in front of the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel at 1:00p.m.
Every year, Chris Owens has proudly led the parade as the Grand Duchess of The French Quarter Easter Parade. However, this year the parade of colorful floats and marching bands will miss Owens, standing on her beautifully decorated float dressed in her personally designed Easter ensemble. In her honor, Eric Paulsen, WWL-TV anchor and Kitsy Adams, Owen's publicist and business manager will step in on the Grand Duchess float surrounded by family and friends.
In a recent interview, Owens, a locally-renowned singer, dancer, and legendary entertainer at her French Quarter club on Bourbon Street, said, "My favorite thing about the Easter Parade is riding on the float in the parade and throwing my signature bunnies and colorful beads to the huge crowds."
Although in the past years the parade has been centered on the holiday spirit of Easter as it rolls through the heart of the French Quarter, Owens indicated that the theme of this year's parade highlights the return and resumption of the city of New Orleans.
"The city of New Orleans is back and moving forward," said Owens. "We are resilient and open for business. Nothing will keep us from celebrating and having a good time."
Historically, the French Quarter Easter Parade was a vision of Chris Owens and Sammy Steele, a local real estate investor, hairdresser and makeup artist. In its first year, Owens and Steele had a few floats followed by a second line. This walking group of
ladies and gentlemen were dressed in their finest Easter outfits handing out beads, flowers, Easter eggs and candy to the small crowds on the street. As each year passed, the parade grew in size, popularity and attendance.
After Steele retired as Captain Emeritus, Owens said that Kitsy Adams, her publicist and manager, along with Dottie Belletto, owner of the New Orleans Convention Company, took over the parade. "Kitsy and Dottie have been by my side," added Owens. "They have developed the Chris Owens French Quarter Easter Parade into a huge success and New Orleans tradition that attracts people from all over the world!"
The Easter Sunday festivities kick off at 10:30 am at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel ballroom with the famous Hat Contest, followed by the Silent Auction organized by Tim Jones. Special entertainment will be provided by the Yat Pack.
Participants of the Hat Contest include men, women and children who want to delight in the merrymaking fun and display their artistry. Local celebrity judges select the most spectacular Easter hats and bonnets based on the following criterion, most glamorous, most creative and most original. Following the Hat Contest, the riders board their glittered floats, and stand for a special tribute and moment of silence to respect the life and legacy of Owens. Then the parade will roll from the corner of St. Louis Street, passing down Royal Street, turning onto Iberville Street and continuing down Bourbon
Street. Eventually, the final destination of the route is at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel for a private champagne brunch and dancing.
"We now have 16 decorated floats, marching bands, fancy convertible cars, dance teams, and more," said Owens. "It is truly a one of a kind parade with glamour, fun and family atmosphere!"
So, for Peep's sake, come celebrate and honor our Boubon Street queen on Easter Sunday at the Chris Owens French Quarter Parade and 'laissez les bons temps rouler!'

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

Friday April 22 at 7:30pm
The sequel to the popular show about a group of New Jersey nuns raising money to bury their dead sisters, this time with a performance to thank the community.

Nunsense II takes place six weeks after the sisters have staged their first benefit. The sisters are back presenting a “thank-you” show for all the people who supported them in the past. But now, they’re a bit slicker, having been “bitten by the theater bug.” Things get to off to a rousing start as the sisters sing Nunsense, the Magic Word, but before long. chaos erupts. Two Franciscans come to claim Sister Mary Amnesia (who has won the Publishers? Clearing House Sweepstakes) as one of their own. At the same time the nuns hear that a talent scout is in the audience to see them strut their stuff. From the riotous bingo game run by Sister Amnesia to the hilarious duet, What Would Elvis Do?, to the rousing finale, There’s Only One Way to End Your Prayers and That’s to Say Amen!, this show will have you rolling in the aisles!
