NATIONAL KISS AND MAKE UP DAY | AUGUST 25
National Kiss and Make up Day reminds us to end the quarrels, arguments, and fights. Instead, come to an agreement with anyone you’ve had a disagreement with on National Kiss and Make up Day on August 25th.
Similar to the April 2nd National Reconciliation Day, THIS National Day gives us a chance to make amends. Each one of us has had a fight with a loved one at some point in our lives. Whether it is between you and a friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker after time has passed, do you remember the cause? Who was even at fault? Do you want the discord to go on any longer? That is probably the most important question of all.
Offering an apology, or simply just breaking the silence can be enough to begin the healing. Strive to compromise. Even in a no-win situation, if the relationship is worth preserving agreeing to disagree may be the only resolution. When we talk through issues calmly after a serious dispute, we often find both sides misunderstood the other person. Looking back, hopefully, we can find something to laugh about and repair the relationship.
Factoid: Kissing prompts your brain to release a happy elixir of feel-good chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. This isn’t only important for your happiness, it may also help to strengthen your relationship.

Anthony Mapp
Edward Buckles Jr. was 12 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. His family fled the city just in time, but the storm changed him forever. After years spent as an educator and filmmaker, Buckles decided to make a film about the children—including himself—who were affected by the storm. Katrina Babies (produced by TIME Studios) is an intimate documentary about life and loss that focuses on those who were 3 to 19 years old when the storm struck. Through moving firsthand accounts, including interviews with his cousins and parents, Buckles wants his film to “change the narrative and own the narrative of what’s happening with young New Orleans.”

NATIONAL BANANA SPLIT DAY | AUGUST 25
National Banana Split Day recognizes the sweet ice cream treat served with a banana, whipped cream, and various toppings. Get yours on August 25th!
How to Make a Banana Split
Originally served in drug stores, soda fountains, and ice cream parlors, the banana split is traditionally served in a long dish called a boat. To make a banana split, cut the banana lengthwise and place it in the dish. Then add scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream between the slices of banana. Each scoop gets a topping; add crushed pineapple to the strawberry, drizzle chocolate syrup over the vanilla, and add strawberry topping to the chocolate. Next, sprinkle with crushed nuts. Finally, garnish with whipped cream and maraschino cherries.
The Inventor
A 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist at Tassel’s Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, created the first banana split in 1904. David Evans Strickler enjoyed inventing sundaes at the store’s soda fountain. For only 10 cents, Strickler sold his first “banana-based triple ice cream sundae,” double the cost of all the other sundaes.

NATIONAL WHISKEY SOUR DAY | AUGUST 25
On August 25th, people across the United States observe National Whiskey Sour Day.
Traditionally garnished with half an orange and a maraschino cherry, a whiskey sour is a mixed drink containing whiskey (often bourbon), lemon juice, and sugar. Whiskey sours are shaken then either served straight or over ice.
“Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” – Mark Twain
Alternatives to the traditional whiskey sour are the Boston sour and the Ward 8. The Boston sour adds a dash of egg white to the recipe. The Ward 8 uses either a Bourbon or rye whiskey base with both lemon and orange juices and grenadine syrup added for sweetness.
The first mention of a whiskey sour was in an 1870 Wisconsin newspaper.
- After opening, a bottle of whiskey will remain good for five years.
- An unopened bottle of whiskey can be kept for over 100 years and will still be fit to drink.
- Both “Whisky” and “Whiskey” spellings are correct. Whisky is specific to Scotch Whisky, and Whiskey is Irish.
- In 2004, Alabama named Conecuh Ridge Whiskey as its official state spirit.
- According to legend, Jack Daniels ran away at the age of 6 and learned to make whiskey from a Lutheran minister.

Ain't There No More New Orleans
Derby Gisclair
The Morgan State Bank building located at 341 Magazine on the corner of Natchez Street, shown here in a 1937 photograph by Charles Franck from the Louisiana State Museum. This stately edifice was one of the bank’s branches, with their original bank located in 1901 by George Q. Whitney at 430 Chartres and Customhouse (Iberville) Street. Their main branch is still referred to as the Morgan State branch of Hancock-Whitney who acquired Morgan State Bank in 1911.
This building was demolished, and the property is currently vacant, being used as a parking lot.
In the left background is the Queen & Crescent Building at 344 Camp Street. Notice the exterior fire escape stairs running down the side of the building. Its name derives from the rail link between the Queen City (Cincinnati) and the Crescent City. When it was completed in 1913 it was a state of the art building with a steel frame, concrete floors, high speed elevators and modern bathrooms.

Ain't There (dere) No More - New Orleans

·
As we are into the year 2022 It is difficult to realize that age is always with you. Being born in the early 1940's and now in 2022 are quite different times.
The 4500 block of Orleans Avenue in New Orleans in 1950. This is the back entrance to my boyhood home. The car is my father's 1942 Studebaker. I am standing in front of the small rain tree to the right. The market is Lupo's Grocery & Market. That is 72 years ago.

Michelle Tea - Knocking Myself Up: A Memoir of (In)Fertility At The Garden District Book Shop
PEN/America Award winner, 2021 Guggenheim fellow, and beloved literary and tarot icon, Michelle Tea will be at The Garden District Book Shop for a lively evening celebrating her latest work Knocking Myself Up: A Memoir of My (In)Fertility, the hilarious, powerfully written, taboo-breaking story of her journey to pregnancy and motherhood as a 40 year-old, queer, uninsured woman.
The event is free and open to the public. Copies of Knocking Myself Up will be available for purchase at The Garden District Book Shop. The event will begin at 6:00 PM with a welcome reception followed by a discussion between Tea and Fallon Young, executive director of the New Orleans Film Society. The two will walk guests through the highs and lows of Tea’s fertility journey. Afterwards, Tea will be available to mingle with guests and personalize books.
Written in intimate, gleeful, TMI prose, Knocking Myself Up is the irreverent account of Tea’s route to parenthood—with a group of ride-or-die friends, a generous drag queen, and a whole lot of can-do pluck. Along the way she falls in love with a wholesome genderqueer a decade her junior, attempts biohacking herself a baby with black market fertility meds (and magicking herself an offspring with witch-enchanted honey), learns her eggs are busted, and enters the Fertility Industrial Complex in order to carry her younger lover’s baby.
With the signature sharp wit and wild heart that have made her a favorite to so many, Tea guides readers through the maze of medical procedures, frustrations, and astonishments on the path to getting pregnant, wryly critiquing some of the systems that facilitate that choice. Tea has crafted a deeply entertaining and profound memoir, a testament to the power of love and family-making, however complex our lives may be, to transform and enrich us.
All citywide-mandated COVID safety protocols will be in place.

Hot August Night returns to Downtown Hammond for first time in 2 years
This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the festival
By Jesse Brooks
The Hammond Downtown Development District is thrilled to announce the return of Hot August Night to Downtown Hammond. This year’s event will take place Friday, August 26, 2022 from 5:30pm-10:00pm. This year also marks Hot August Night’s 25th Anniversary, and the DDD encourages the community to help celebrate the milestone.
Hot August Night is a Downtown Hammond tradition and one of South Louisiana’s most anticipated annual events. It’s a family-friendly and free-to-attend celebration in the heart of the downtown district. Musicians, local artists, and small businesses provide quality entertainment for all ages, cultivating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere that can only be found in #HammondAmerica!
Uptown Phunk, a New Orleans, high energy dance band, will be this year’s featured musical act. This 11-piece ensemble is known for their lively performances. This group is all about packing the dance floor and curating an unforgettable time!
This year’s event will also feature community favorites like the Wine Walk, LionPawLooza (parade, pep rally, and autograph session with your favorite SLU student-athletes), and more.
It's the 25th Anniversary! Come celebrate with us!
.
DDD STAGE 6-7PM
LionPawLooza is an explosion of SLU Lion Pride, right in the middle of Downtown Hammond. It begins with a parade down E. Thomas St, featuring SLU student-athletes, coaches, spirit squads, and (of course!) Roomie the Lion. The parade ends right in front of the main stage; and then the pep rally begins! Show your spirt with the cheerleaders, Lionettes, and Colorguard. Then the fun wraps up with a full autograph session where you can meet some of your favorite SLU coaches and players. You can also buy tickets and merch during LionPawlooza! The parade kicks off at 6:00pm and the pep rally follows immediately after on the Main Stage.

Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday at Zony Mash!
Zony Mash Beer Project
Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday
Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

ANNOUNCING CULTURE COLLISION 12!
ANNUAL FREE ARTS & CULTURE SHOWCASE RETURNS IN 2022 AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS
WWNO 89.9 FM and Jefferson Performing Arts Society are partnering to bring back Culture Collision! After a two-year pandemic hiatus, Culture Collision 12 returns on Wednesday, September 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie. The last Culture Collision event was held in August 2019.
Culture Collision is an annual showcase for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in the New Orleans metro-area. Ranging from the city’s classic arts institutions to its resourceful contemporary newcomers, this happy hour event reflects the diversity of the region’s creative community. The event is free and open to the public—and for this “comeback year”, the fee for organizations to reserve a display table have been waived. Over 60 local arts and culture companies are expected to join, with several of the participating organizations presenting live entertainment.
“From its beginning in 2008, Culture Collision’s aim has been to introduce all kinds of art and cultural activity to people from all parts of the metro area,” said WWNO General Manager, Paul Maassen. “WWNO is delighted that Culture Collision 2022 will carry on this mission and highlight our region’s newest investment in the arts, the Jefferson Performing Arts Center.”
This beloved community arts event is making its debut in Jefferson Parish after over a decade in New Orleans, where it was held at renowned cultural venues such as The National World War Two Museum, The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), The Ogden Museum, and New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).
In July 2022, Jefferson Performing Arts Society was named as the new managers of Jefferson Performing Arts Center. “Our hosting of Culture Collision aligns with our goal to build a wider array of presentations and programming at this gorgeous gem of a venue. We look forward to welcoming arts and cultural organizations of all genres and their audiences here in September to show them all that we have to offer and to let them know that our doors are always open to new opportunities and partnerships,” said Todd Simmons, General Manager of Jefferson Performing Arts Center and Executive Director of Jefferson Performing Arts Society.
Jefferson Performing Arts Center is located at 6400 Airline Drive near the former Zephyr Stadium, not far from the Saints training camp and next to LaSalle Park. Parking in the Jefferson Performing Arts Center adjacent lot is free.
