NATIONAL MAKE A FRIEND DAY
Always observed on February 11th, National Make A Friend Day is a fantastic opportunity to meet someone new and make a new friendship. Friends serve a vital role in everyone’s lives. They are one of life’s most valuable assets.
“Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light” – Helen Keller
New friends can broaden our horizons by helping us to see new perspectives, challenging us to try something different or connecting us to opportunities. Meeting new people can help sharpen our social skills and keep us from becoming lonely.
“Friends are those rare people who ask how you are and then wait for the answer” – Ed Cunningham
While friends often share common backgrounds or experiences, they certainly don’t have to have everything in common. One of the simplest ways to make new friends is to explore your interests by taking a class or joining a club.

How to Make a Dong Phuong Style King Cake
|
Murmurs of Ricotta shares her easy, step-by-step recipe for brioche & butter cream King Cake, inspired by Dong Phuong Bakery's famous (sold out!) version
Celebrate a quarantined Carnival season by making your own Mardi Gras King Cake at home. Maria Do, the recipe developer and food blogger behind Murmurs of Ricotta, shares her award-winning homemade King Cake with us in this video, inspired by her hometown bakery Dong Phuong in New Orleans, which has already sold out of its famous king cakes for the entire 2021 season. Do's recipe makes a fluffy and moist brioche dough with cream cheese icing that has gained popularity by home bakers in Louisiana and across the country this year.

Out of an abundance of caution and in consideration of the safety of visitors and staff, NOMA is temporarily revising our hours of operation.
through March 3, 2021, the museum will now be closed Monday through Wednesday.
NOMA will be open to visitors Thursday through Sunday, 10 AM – 6 PM. The Besthoff Sculpture Garden will remain open from Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM through sundown (5 PM). During this interim period, Louisiana residents will receive free museum admission on Thursdays, courtesy of The Helis Foundation.
We are paying close attention to COVID-19 infection rates across our city and state. As per the medical and scientific experts, we are anticipating a spike in January and February following the holidays. NOMA will use this additional day of closure for sanitization protocols, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors and staff.
To ensure social distancing is in place, prepaid, contactless ticketing is encouraged for museum visits.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support!

Muses hands out “Glitter Shoe” throws to honor health care workers
|
“On Muses 'tHERsday', we won’t be taking to the streets on floats, but if you hear a knock at the door or feel a tap on your shoulder, don’t be surprised. It’s our way of spreading Mardi Gras magic by gifting Glitter Shoes to courageous health care workers and our fellow Carnival-craving New Orleanians,” said Muses Captain Staci Rosenberg.
Costumed Muses will be visiting hospitals in the New Orleans metro area to hand out the one-of-a-kind throws called “Heels for Healers” to random people today.
Twenty one shoes will be handed out representing the krewe’s 21st Anniversary.

HELPING HEEL THE ROUTE WITH MUSES SHOES
|
Only a Lucky Few Will Win a Rare 2021 Muses Shoe
Even Though the Parade is Canceled!
The Krewe of Muses recognizes the huge impact that Mardi Gras has on the businesses along our parade route which are already hurting due to Covid. We want to help support them with our glitter shoe lottery – Stilotto!
Here’s how to play:
Stilotto runs from January 20th to February 10th. Check out the list and map of participating businesses below.
Visit participating businesses and find (or ask for) the Muses placard. Scan the QR code to pull up the Stilotto entry form.
You can enter once per day at each business. Note: If you enter more then once per day at a business, the computer will discard the extra entries. Maximum prize of three shoes per winner.
Each participating business will have one Stilotto winner. Winners will receive a coveted Muses glitter shoe. The more businesses you visit each day, the better your chances!
Muses will draw the winners on Muses tHERsday – February, 11th. Winners will be announced on this website and will receive a notification email.
All shoes must be picked up at a socially distant drive-by at the Muses Den (address to be provided later) between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 14th.

From Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the wine of popes and kings, to the easy-drinking bottlings of Côtes du Rhône adored worldwide, the hedonistic wines of the Southern Rhône are familiar friends. As a whole, they share a lusciousness of fruit, enticing spice and earthy characteristics with the most dynamic generally hailing from the region’s mighty crus. A cru, which translates to “growth” in French, designates a legally demarcated region that’s recognized for its quality and distinctive terroir. Cru wines, labeled solely by their appellation such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Lirac, Tavel, Rasteau, are the elite; they’re positioned above wider regional classifications like Côtes du Rhône or Côtes du Rhône Villages. This designation proves both a reward and challenge to winegrowers - it imposes strict yield limits and mandates laborious quality measures.
But besides all of those well known Crus, the Rhone has some smaller appellations and production styles that are a bit off the radar. Did you know there is a sparkling wine appellation in the Rhone? And while white Rhones are a rarity (only 5% of all wine produced) they offer the same richness of fruit as the reds and are perfect for those who enjoy fuller bodied white wines. Then there is the tiniest appellation in the Rhone for red wines, Beaume des Venise - only 27 hectares so as you can imagine, the wines are hard to find.
So besides having a great supply of the well know wines from the region, check out our unsung heroes! Same approachability, same deliciousness just more rare and smaller quantities...
Domaine Achard-Vincent Clairette de Die Legend says that the process to make the sparkling wines of the little known region of Clairette de Die was found accidentally by a Gallo-Roman shepherd. He was using the cool waters of La Drôme river to chill a jar of local wine. The jar was forgotten and left in the cold water over the winter. Upon finding it in the spring, it was found to be carbonated, or pétillant, which roughly translates into English as “sparkling”. Following the original discovery, Gallic tribes left jars of the wine in rivers over the winter and then recovered them in the spring. Among the most well-known of Clairette de Die’s producers today is the tiny Domaine Achard-Vincent. Jean-Pierre Achard, and his son, Thomas, descend from five generations of growers. The domaine has farmed organically since Thomas’s grandparents were directing it, although it is now officially certified as both organic (since 1982) and biodynamic (since 2007). They only produce the traditional sparkling wines of the region and this brut bottling is a dry wine made exclusively from Clairette, crafted by the méthode traditionnelle that is also used in Champagne.
Domaine de Durban Beaumes-de-Venise Rouge - When you walk through the high-altitude vineyards at Domaine de Durban a handful of the soil reveals shards of ancient Roman roof tiles and medieval pots - wine has been a part of the culture here for millennia. Jacques Leydier bought the property in the 1960s when the farm had fallen into disrepair. Today, Henri and Philippe Leydier run the domaine and this magical spot has assumed a higher purpose, producing some of the most memorable wines of the Southern Rhône. The blend is 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre made from sustainably farmed 50 year old vines, hand harvested, native yeasts and bottled unfiltered, unfined - it is a gorgeous, velvety expression of a Rhone Valley red.
Domaine de Saint-Cosme “Les Deux Albion” Blanc Château de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the benchmark wines of the appellation. Wine has been produced on the site of Saint Cosme since Roman times, evident by the ancient Gallo-Roman vats carved into the limestone below the château. The property has been in the hands of the Barruol family since 1490. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992 making a dramatic shift to quality and converting to biodynamics in 2010. This white is a new project for the winery with its first vintage being 2016. The grapes come from 10-hectares near Violès, directly across the Ouvèze River from Gigondas where there is a high level of limestone. It is a blend of the predominant varieties of the region - Viognier, Picpoul, Marsanne, Clairette and Ugni Blanc and shows the salty minerality typical of limestone terroir with notes of dried apricots and white flowers.
Love the Southern Rhone? We do too! Check out some of our favorites in stock and arriving this week. Prices range from $13.99 to $113...

Mardi Gras 2021
Krewe of House Floats Westbank
|
Carnival season 2021 will look different without our traditional Mardi Gras parades. In true New Orleans fashion, our residents formed a new Krewe ¨Krewe of House Floats¨ to keep the celebration going and to help our fellow residents who have been affected by the cancellation of our traditional parades. Krewe of House Floats is a new way to celebrate our Mardi Gras traditions in a safe social distance way but with all the creativity, music and fun that is characteristic of NOLA. With over 5000 Houses participating, the Krewe of House Floats has crowned Big Freedia as The Grand Marshal of the inaugural Krewe of House Floats! We are including the list of house floats located on the Westbank so you can plan your socially distanced tour any time between February 4 and Mardi Gras Day February 16. Come out and celebrate this new tradition and make a donation to help Krewe of House Floats help those who work hard every year to make the ¨greatest FREE show on Earth¨ possible

NATIONAL GIVING HEARTS DAY
Big hearts give big on National Giving Hearts Day! On the second Thursday in February each year, the celebration offers one of the best opportunities to donate to your favorite charity. Not only that, this is the longest-running giving day in the United States. So many hearts and so much to give!
In a single 24 hour period, more funds are raised for charities throughout the upper Midwest. Organizations like soup kitchens, medical foundations, STEM programs, arts programs, and so many more raise money to advance their missions. And the money goes directly to the charities YOU love the most. Plus, you can give to as many charities you want. Give to one, or give to several.
- In 2021, Giving Hearts Day celebrates its 14th year.
- More than 34,700 people donated in 2020.
- Since 2008, tens of thousands of generous donors have given more than $90 million.
- In 2020, more than $19 million was donated.
- The average donor gave to 2.2 charities in 2020.
Whether you’re a donor or a charity, get involved. Rally your organization and provide support to your favorite charity. And it doesn’t matter where you are on the planet. You can still give.

NATIONAL PEPPERMINT PATTY DAY
National Peppermint Patty Day recognizes a treat enjoyed by millions around the world. On February 11th each year, sink your teeth into the minty chocolate sweet.
The oldest commercially-made mint patty or cake was made by the Quiggin’s family on the Isle of Man (an island located in the middle of the northern Irish Sea). They had been making the cakes since 1840, but in 1880, four of the sons formed the Kendal Mint Cake Company.
In the United States, as early as 1900, peppermint patties were made by regional confectioneries. Companies such as Idaho Candy Company, Trudeau Candie’s, and Pearson’s (which purchased Trudeau in 1951, both were Minnesota companies). Possibly the most known, though not the oldest, York Peppermint Patties were made by the York Cone Company of Pennsylvania.
York Peppermint Patties were first made in 1940 and distributed regionally, much like other candy makers of the era. York dominated the market because of its firmness and crispness while the others were soft. A former York employee remembered that the final (sample) test of the patty before it left the factory was called a “snap test.” If the candy did not break clean in the middle, it did not make it onto candy store shelves.
In 1975 the company was acquired by Peter Paul Cadbury. Cadbury moved the factory to Reading, Pennsylvania, much to the distress of workers and residents of York. The company then distributed the popular treat across the country.

Millions of people around the world will ring in the Lunar New Year on Friday, February 12th, coinciding with the first new moon of the lunar calendar. While commonly referred to as “Chinese New Year,” many East Asian and Southeast Asian countries outside Mainland China also celebrate the Lunar New Year, including Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Bhutan, Mongolia, and the Philippines.
Each country has its own unique traditions and customs, but common to all celebrations are coming together with family and friends, gift-giving, and preparing and eating traditional foods.
The Year of the Ox
On February 12th, we say goodbye to the Year of the Rat and usher in the Year of the Ox, the second animal of the Chinese Zodiac. The Ox is an esteemed animal in Chinese culture and is said to represent hard work, positivity, and honesty.
|
|
Dragon dances, mooncakes, parades, fireworks, red envelopes... most of us are familiar with many of the traditions associated with Chinese New Year celebrations. Lunar New Year is a very big deal in China. Schools and businesses are closed for a whole week and millions of people travel to their hometowns to spend the holiday with family in what is often referred to as "the world's largest human migration." Red is considered a lucky color in Chinese culture, so you will see it in abundance during Lunar New Year festivities.
Speaking of red, those red envelopes, known as hong bao, contain money that is given by elders to children. While the traditional foods prepared and eaten during Lunar New Year vary somewhat by region, jiaozi (dumplings), nian goa (rice cakes), and mandarin oranges are considered lucky foods.

YARDI GRAS
CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE
|
The Yard on Frenchmen presents:
YARDI GRAS 2021, the ultimate CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE!
This year Carnival may look a little different. That is why we pioneered a wild 5 day affair, introducing traditional and re-imagined parade route culture to our guests at The Yard.
Beginning with an immersive restaurant atmosphere, the Courtyard and interior dining room will seamlessly transition into an explosion of Yardi Gras throws and wild booty-popping presentations, including an array of characters that aren't your usual suspects. Guests let loose and party the weekend away.
This signature event features a daily CRAWFISH BOIL, indulgent food menu, Yardi Gras drink specials, a variety of special guests and "parade route" inspired surprises, with music to keep the party going from open to close.
DJ Vladimir will be on the decks each day keeping the Yardi Gras vibe alive with Partygoers dancing in their seats and out in the street.
Each night the ACE Brass band, featuring a full (St. Augustine inspired) drum line will be playing in the courtyard. You may not see a single parade this year, but you won't miss the experience if you go to the Yardi Gras!

Mystery in Motion: Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras
|
On Tuesday, February 9 at 6 p.m., Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., will be part of a virtual conversation about the exhibition, examining how African, Islamic, Native American, and European belief systems have fused to create a set of cultural and artistic practices that are unique to New Orleans and Carnival. Registration is required for the event as part of the Tulane Alumni Association’s “Mardi Gras Goes Virtual” series.
|
|
Mardi Gras exhibit opens; virtual events planned
|
In addition to a stunning exhibit in the Presbytere, there also are several virtual programs offered in connection with the program.
This new exhibition inside the Presbytère on Jackson Square examines the direct influence of multicultural spirituality within the carnival traditions of Black New Orleanians. Due to the pandemic, you will not find many Black masking Indians on the streets this carnival season, but you will see their elaborate suits and learn about their use and inspiration inside the museum’s galleries. The exhibit will be on display in time for the Mardi Gras weekend, from February 13, 2021, through November 28, 2021, and will serve as the centerpiece of the museum’s planned programming to celebrate the 2021 carnival season.
“Mystery in Motion is a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the vibrant carnival traditions of the Black community in New Orleans and it offers an excellent way to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during this current pandemic,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
Mystery in Motion guest curators Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., and Ron Bechet of Xavier University of Louisiana explore spirituality in Mardi Gras through the presentation of more than two dozen Black masking Indian suits, carnival costumes, and masking objects produced in New Orleans, juxtaposed with extraordinary African artifacts that are representative of the cultures, religions, and artistry that influenced their creation. These exceptional African objects will be on loan from the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac and Southern University at New Orleans.
“There is so much happening on Mardi Gras day, it is impossible to take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences. The intent of the exhibition is to offer an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual dimensions of African American Mardi Gras masking that are hidden in plain view,” said Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D.
Additionally, several virtual events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition that are free and open to the public:

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.
The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.
