FRESH & LOCAL:
No Bad Apples
Apples in the Big Easy? Our warmer climate is not great for growing apples which need a certain number of hours below a certain temperature (called chilling) in order to set fruit so we don’t see a lot of local apples. This year though, we have vendors from more northern parts and colder climates bringing heat tolerant varieties to market. Swing by our Uptown, Mid-City and CBD markets and check out our new vendor Mountain View Orchards from Chilton County, Alabama for Gala and Golden Delicious now, and Red Delicious, Fuji and Pink Lady apples as the season progresses. Amorphous Gardens just about four hours due north of New Orleans just finished their season up - although they’ve got plans for expanding the orchard in the works. Speaking of seasonality, apples are a fall crop all across the country. The modern magic of climate-controlled storage, waxing and other chemicals allows those fall apples to be sold all year. To read more about how old store bought apples are,  check out this article . To get the tastiest, most nutrient dense apples, make sure you’re getting them in season from the farmers market!

PICKS OF THE WEEK:
Muscadine Grapes
Last week we saw the first “grapes of the south,” also known as muscadines! Muscadines have been gathered for centuries in our region to make jams, jellies, preserves, and wine. They come in a dark purple color or a greenish pink and grow on vines like any grape. The term muscadine usually refers to the dark purple ones, while the lighter ones are sometimes referred to as scuppernongs or bronze muscadine. Their taste is a musky sweet (hence the name) and they’re unlike the grapes you’re used to since their skin is thick and slightly bitter, and you’ll find a few large seeds nestled inside. For this reason, they’re often used to make other things like jelly or wine and if eaten fresh, many people will squeeze out the soft center to eat, spit the seeds and discard the peel. While muscadines are currently found on the Mendez Farm table at the Uptown Market, expect to see more in the weeks to come.

Owner Brittany Barnes, proudly offers grits and other specialty items from stone-ground Mississippi grown corn. She proudly explains nothing ever sits on the shelf, grits are milled to order and preservative free! Grit Girls not only has grits, polenta, cornmeal and masa, but also offers a unique take on grits by milling black-eyed peas or popcorn! Swing by, say hi to Grit Girl employee Robert, and give em a try!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:
Homemade Applesauce
The temperature is finally dropping below 90 degrees and we are feeling some serious fall vibes at market. Carrots, butternut squash, and… apples! One of our favorite apple dishes is fool proof - try this  simple applesauce recipe  from The Forked Spoon. Scoop up some golden delicious or pink ladys at the market and you are good to go!
Homemade Applesauce
The temperature is finally dropping below 90 degrees and we are feeling some serious fall vibes at market. Carrots, butternut squash, and… apples! One of our favorite apple dishes is foolproof - try this  simple applesauce recipe  from The Forked Spoon. Scoop up some golden delicious or pink ladies at the market and you are good to go!
Ingredients
  • Apples
  • Water
  • Sugar or another sweetener (optional)
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Lemon juice
Directions
To make homemade applesauce gather a bunch of apples– whichever apples you want (see above). In nearly all apple recipes I use Pink Lady Apples because they’re tart, crispy and so pink. Basically, the only thing that matters when picking apples. Just kidding…but, that’s how I do things.
Peel and core the apples. If you’re handy enough with an apple peeler, that will definitely help speed the process along. Unfortunately, I have never been clever enough to figure out how to use mine (true story) so I stick to my favorite paring knife. Peel, core, and slice the peeled apples into large slices. Transfer the apples to a large pot. Add the water, lemon juice, sweetener, cinnamon, and salt and mix to combine. You don’t need a lot of liquid, however, you will need approximately 1/2 cup to help steam the apples and move things along. Some people use apple juice or apple cider instead of water, but I just see that as more sugar, so I’ll let you decide.
Bring liquid to a boil, reduce heat, and cover. Now the hard part is over (since, you know, that was super hard). Allow the apples to cook for approximately 25-30 minutes. Your apples should be broken up, buy partially intact, and very soft. Remove those sweet apples from heat.
Make into applesauce. Mash or puree, which will you choose?

Celebrating the U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish Industry during National Catfish Month
Deanie’s Three Locations to Offer Special Catfish Lunch Deal throughout August

August is National Catfish Month, and Deanie’s Seafood ’s Restaurants are celebrating all month long with a catfish lunch special available at all three locations. We will be offering a half Po boy or Catfish Plate with a side for $8.99 through the month of August. The special is available during lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily at all three restaurants.

Recognized as one of the best seafood restaurants in New Orleans, Deanie’s Seafood is known for its classic fried catfish, a staple of our Deanie’s Giant Seafood Platter. Deanie’s Seafood has served high quality U.S. farm-raised catfish from Simmons Catfish in Yazoo City, Miss., for more than 30 years.

“We are proud to serve and celebrate local seafood from the Gulf, from certified Wild Louisiana shrimp, oysters, crawfish, blue crab and flounder to premium Mississippi farm-raised catfish that we have sourced from the same farm for over 30 years,” said Barbara Chifici, Deanie’s Seafood Restaurants proprietor.

The U.S. Farm Raised Catfish
Farm-raised catfish is one of the most affordable, environmentally sustainable sources of high-quality protein available to American consumers today. Catfish is by far the widest produced freshwater fish in the country, and farm-raised catfish is the largest aquaculture in the United States. Farm-raised catfish has been one of the top 10 most-consumed seafoods in the United States for the past 20 years. Ninety-four percent of all U.S. farm-raised catfish is raised in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, and catfish contributes about $4 billion per year to each of the states’ economies, according to The Catfish Institute.

About Deanie’s Seafood Restaurants
Deanie’s Seafood Restaurants and Market have been known for serving hearty portions of the best boiled, broiled and fried seafood in New Orleans for more than 50 years. Family-owned and -operated, Deanie’s Seafood operates three successful restaurants, including its original restaurant and seafood market in Bucktown, 1713 Lake Ave., Deanie’s in the French Quarter, 841 Iberville St., and Deanie’s Sea Food Kitchen, 2200 Magazine Street in the Garden District.

Talks Focus on Katrina Books

METAIRIE –  author events focusing on Hurricane Katrina books will occur in
August 2019
East Bank Regional Library,
4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

Each event is free of charge
and is open to the public.
There is no registration.

7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019
Coast Guard Heroes of New Orleans , Captain Robert Mueller (ret.)

Mueller’s premise is that “With disaster scenarios of increasing interest and disaster preparedness of paramount importance, it’s time to take a deeper look at what went very right before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina.” The unprecedented surface rescue put into action under Capt. Mueller took place with little fanfare, and saved the lives of 25,000 people by boat and 8,500 by helicopter.

Capt. Robert G. Mueller, U.S. Coast Guard (ret.) led the surface rescue operations in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He retired after 30 years in the service and is the vice president for compliance at Turn Services, a towboat and fleeting company. He is an adjunct professor at Tulane University teaching Homeland Security in the graduate program.

7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019
Panel – John Batty, Laura Dragon and Mikel Schaeffer

Voices of Angels , John Batty

Throughout the devastating winds, rising waters, and August heat, nurses stuck by their patients. They improvised new emergency procedures and methods of record-keeping and patient transport, all without power or reliable information. These angels saved lives while their world fell apart around them.  Voices of Angels  is a case study and planning guide essential for facilities facing hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, and a host of other issues that affect medical centers nationwide.

John R. Batty is an experienced psychiatric nurse who interviewed the nurses who treated patients during and after Hurricane Katrina. He and co-author Gail Tumulty presented the nurses’ experiences at an American Nurses’ Association conference. Batty’s research into hospital conditions and evacuations gave him unparalleled experience in disaster management. Batty, a former writer for First NBC Bank, lives and works in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Hurricane Boy , Laura Dragon

Hollis Williams is a middle-school student in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. His father absent and his mother dead, Hollis and his siblings live with his grandmother. He dreams of reconnecting with his father, but Hurricane Katrina strikes and devastates his home and his plans. The young boy’s family is trapped on the roof of their house, waiting to be rescued. When help finally arrives, Hollis and his family are separated and sent hundreds of miles apart.

Laura Dragon is a psychotherapist who works with children and adolescents at River Oaks Hospital in New Orleans. Her work with children who were separated from their families during Hurricane Katrina formed the genesis of  Hurricane Boy . Dragon earned a master of arts degree in addictions counseling, and a master of social work degree from Tulane University.

Lost in Katrina , Mikel Schaeffer

This book offers emotional accounts of life before, during and immediately after Hurricane Katrina in St. Bernard, a parish that seemingly disappeared from the government’s sight. While President Bush was shaking hands with FEMA director Michael Browne on the fourth day after the storm, St. Bernard Parish residents were struggling to salvage what they could. Ordinary people did extraordinary things to save the parish that found itself almost completely submerged in floodwater.

Mikel Schaefer spent his early years in St. Bernard Parish and graduated from the University of New Orleans. He is an executive producer at WWL-TV, the CBS affiliate in New Orleans. He was among the staff honored for broadcast coverage during Hurricane Katrina, and WWL-TV was awarded the 2005 George Foster Peabody Award, one of only four television stations in the nation to be honored.

Exciting New Greek Wines
Castel Noarna is a family owned organic winery in Trento region of northern Italy. Housed in a castle that was built between the 11th and 16th century, this noble property sits high on a hillside with a commanding view of the town of Noarna. Marco and Susana Zani currently own the property and surround vineyards bought by Marco's father in the 1970's. They have partially restored the castle, and the entire production takes place within the walls of this ancient piece of history. Producing their wines from local and international varieties with native yeasts and minimal added sulfites - they have a freshness and purity not always achieved by naturally made wines. We visited the property earlier this summer, learning the history of the castle, its surroundings and Marco’s journey from conventional wine production to his current, very thoughtful approach to natural wine. This Wednesday Jonathan Gray from Uncorked will take us through this tasting of their Pet Nat, Metodo Classico sparkling, Noisiola and Teroldego, all unique expressions of the region and it's terroir.

Casey Foote will select and present a cheese pairing plate ($12 with flight, $18 without the flight). No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 4 wines is $20 - reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows. All wines and cheeses are available for purchase to have at Swirl or you can take them to go.  Make your reservations here  C astel Noarna

James Moises and The Oregon Pinot Show, August 28, 5:30-7:30PM Vintage is everything in winemaking. The different expressions a vineyard can produce from the same grape can vary greatly with a rainy spring, a hot and humid summer or a cool fall - this is what makes wine so intriguing. And while good winemakers can make great wine in bad vintages, it’s nice when mother nature cooperates and gives you a picture perfect growing season. Oregon has had a recent slew of recent vintages and in tonight's event you'll have the opportunity to taste 5 beautiful wines made by small artisan producers as we compare the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and a special treat, a 2010 all from one of the best regions for Pinot Noir in the world! James Moises, Oregon producer, distributor and importer of limited production wines will present this informative seated tasting where we learn how mother nature can change your fortunes to good or bad with a single act of weather. The tasting will feature Pinot Noirs by Brittan Vineyards, Andrew Rich, de Lancelotti, Ghost Hill Cellars and Dominio IV and be accompanied by a selection of west coast cheeses. Reservations required and due to the limited availability of these wines we are only seating 20 people. Go here to reserve your spot -  Oregon Pinot Show .

This Week's Friday Free For All, 6-8PM Neighborhood wine guy Dave Sobiesk joins us this week for a tasting of 4 free wines. Our theme is TBA but Dave always makes it fun and educational! Plus our friends from  Faubourg Farms  will be serving up their delicious small plates made with fresh local products. This tasting is free and open to the public, no reservations required.

Lane Moore - HOW TO BE ALONE

J oin us when Lane Moore—former Sex & Relationships Editor for Cosmopolitan and host of the wildly popular comedy show Tinder Live—presents her poignant, funny, and deeply moving first book,  HOW TO BE ALONE: If You Want To, and Even If You Don't . Lane will appear in conversation with New Orleans-based writer, performer, and radio enthusiast Aura Bishop.
Lane Moore is a rare performer who is as impressive onstage. But her story has had its obstacles, including being her own parent, living in her car as a teenager, and moving to New York City to pursue her dreams. Through it all, she looked to movies, TV, and music as the family and support systems she never had.

From spending the holidays alone to having better “stranger luck” than with those closest to her to feeling like the last hopeless romantic on earth, Lane reveals her powerful and entertaining journey in all its candor, anxiety, and ultimate acceptance—with humor always her bolstering force and greatest gift.

HOW TO BE ALONE is a must-read for anyone whose childhood still feels unresolved, who spends more time pretending to have friends online than feeling close to anyone in real life, who tries to have genuine, deep conversations in a roomful of people who would rather you not. Above all, it’s a book for anyone who desperately wants to feel less alone and a little more connected through reading her words.
Lane Moore is an award-winning comedian, writer, actor, and musician. The New York Times called her comedy show Tinder Live “ingenious.” Her comedy and her band, It Was Romance, have been praised everywhere from Pitchfork to Vogue, and her writing has appeared everywhere from The New Yorker to The Onion. She is the former sex and relationships editor at Cosmopolitan, where she received a GLAAD Award for her groundbreaking work expanding the magazine’s queer coverage. She lives in Brooklyn with her dog-child, Lights.
Aura Bishop was the creator and host of Backstage on the Bayou, the first independent arts and entertainment podcast in New Orleans, the founder of the former podcast collective NOLA New Media, and creator of The Sticky. In New York, she volunteered with Clocktower Radio, assisting with social media and event support. Her work has appeared in Slow Southern Style, NOLA Defender, Space Nation Orbit, Stigma Fighters, and soon, Cinnamon Mag.

~ GRAND OPENING WEEKEND HOURS~
Saturday, August 31 Noon - 7:30p.m.
Sunday, September 1 9:30a.m. - 7:30p.m.
Monday, September 2 9:30a.m. - 7:30p.m.
15 Henry Thomas Drive • New Orleans, Louisiana

You and your family will have a blast checking out the 5 new gallery spaces - Follow That Food, Play With Me, Move With the River, Make Your Mark and Dig Into Nature! Plus, you'll be delighted to see some of your favorite exhibits from Julia Street in this beautiful new location.

Don't Miss These 5 Gems On Your Visit...
1. Fog Art Installation -  Every hour you’ll witness an amazing fog art installation surrounding the bridge leading up to the LCM. Developed by a Japanese artist, there are only 2 in the United States! You and your kids will love interacting with this art exhibit as it shifts and changes with the wind.
2. Glass Bead Installation -  New Orleans artist Mitchell Gaudet has individually cast 500 5” glass beads in a rainbow of colors to adorn the railing of the porch of the Museum. These one-of-a-kind beads are not only a nod to New Orleans’ cultural history, they’re designed to be etched with personal names, memorials, and quotes. There are still some beads available for  sponsorship  by your family. Your kids will love to search the beads for their name, and you’ll love being a permanent part of the Museum.
3. Cypress,cypress, cypress -  Look for the beautiful desktop in the Julia Street Lobby and stools made from cypress trees from the Atchafalaya Basin. These materials were previously harvested and speak to the Museums appreciation for Louisiana natural elements and a reuse of materials.
4. Student Art -  Everywhere you turn, you’ll see artwork from local students adorning the walls and hallways of the Museum, along with the name and age of the local artist, demonstrating the potential that all children carry.
5. The Grandparent’s Influence -  As part of the museum's case study with multiple generation Louisiana families, you’ll spot quotes from some of our more prominent grandparents, including Leah Chase.

by  Adam McKeown , Ph.D., Director, Department of Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Tulane University.  The Middle Ages continue to captivate the popular imagination, most recently with television series like  Game of Thrones  and Vikings . This presentation looks critically at the contemporary fascination with the Middle Ages, from  Ivanhoe  through Tolkien and Harry Potter to the Song of Ice and Fire and discusses how enduring anxieties about modernity, identity, and globalism are channeled into our representations of medieval Europe. McKeown teaches and writes on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English and Trans-Atlantic literature. His particular areas of interest are visual culture, community, and rhetoric. 1:00 p.m. Joan of Arc as a Subject of Opera and Musical Theater, by New Orleans Opera Director Robert Lyall. How is an individual whose life is almost fully documented in historical writings treated when she is portrayed on the stage? How important is factual accuracy in developing a true characterization for the theater? In addition to his twenty-year tenure as general and artistic director of the New Orleans Opera, Lyall has directed the Knoxville Opera (TN), the Opera Grand Rapids (MI), the Mississippi Opera, the Victoria Symphony (TX) and the Oak Ridge Symphony (TN), and has guest conducted symphonies, ballets and operas all over the world.

1:45 p.m. The Redemption of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, by Richard Balthazar. Describing his own long involvement with the subject of Joan of Arc as well as Tchaikovsky’s spiritual and literary themes, Balthazar will discuss his experience of twice translating Tchaikovsky’s own Russian libretto of the opera for singing in English. He will remark on problems encountered forty years ago in his first translation for the Canadian Opera Company and explain how he has solved them in this new translation for the New Orleans Opera. From an academic background in Slavic Languages, Balthazar moved on into working as an arts organization administrator. In his later working years and after retirement, Richard wrote books in fiction and nonfiction, played at sculpture, and became a serious graphic artist.
