Exhibition to explore local sports history through 20 essential stories
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” opens

WHO:      The Historic New Orleans Collection

WHAT:    “Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change,” an exhibition featuring original objects

WHEN:
December 10–March 8, 2020

    Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
  Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

WHERE: 520 Royal St., in the French Quarter

HOW:     Admission is free.

WHY:         Stories are central to our love of sports. In a new exhibition from The Historic New Orleans Collection, 20 stories feature bitter rivalries, shocking upsets and unlikely heroes and reveal how these moments are woven into the collective memory and identity of the local community.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change”  opens Friday, Nov. 22, and explores sporting moments since the end of the American Civil War that have mirrored or instigated broader social and economic change in New Orleans. Curator Mark Cave noticed the vital role sports have played in the city’s slow—and often reluctant—progress toward inclusivity, and how major sporting events have long been a cornerstone of the city’s tourism economy.
Locals and visitors alike will quickly recognize some of the stories, such as the epic bouts of heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan, the founding of the Sugar Bowl in the midst of the Great Depression and the creation of the New Orleans Saints. The exhibition also covers horseracing, basketball, cycling, sailing, roller derby and more. Visitors will see the original Sugar Bowl trophy, a plaster cast of Sullivan’s arm, the Saints’ 2010 Super Bowl trophy and hundreds of original photographs and other objects from public and private collections throughout the community.
“Crescent City Sport” will be on view through Sunday, March 8, 2020. Admission is free, and the exhibition is open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Free activity guides will be available for younger visitors.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” is presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection and sponsored by The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation

Christopher Schaberg - SEARCHING FOR THE ANTHROPOCENE: A Journey into the Environmental Humanities
Come celebrate the launch of Christopher Schaberg's new book,  SEARCHING FOR THE ANTROPOCENE:A Journey into the Environmental Humanities .
"Moving nimbly between personal narrative and academic theory, Christopher Schaberg locates the Anthropocene in compelling, illustrative sites--from the sand dunes of his Michigan childhood where he gathered stones derived from 350-million-year-old coral to the new billion-dollar airport terminal being built, ill-advisedly, just above sea level in his current home of New Orleans. This is an elegantly-written book that guides us through the dizzying epiphanies of scale, co-implication, and self-recognition that the Anthropocene concept demands." -Nicole Seymour, author of Bad Environmentalism: Irony and Irreverence in the Ecological Age
Debated, denied, unheard of, encompassing: The Anthropocene is a vexed topic, and requires interdisciplinary imagination.
Starting at the author’s home in rural northern Michigan and zooming out to perceive a dizzying global matrix, Christopher Schaberg invites readers on an atmospheric, impressionistic adventure with the environmental humanities. Searching for the Anthropocene blends personal narrative, cultural criticism, and ecological thought to ponder human-driven catastrophe on a planetary scale.
"This book is not about defining or settling the Anthropocene, but rather about articulating what it’s like to live in the Anthropocene, to live with a sense of its nagging presence--even as the stakes grow higher with each passing year, each oncoming storm.Christopher Schaberg wanders Michigan’s north woods and far flung airfields to ferret out the absurdity of the ‘Anthropocene’. Schaberg shows how Homo sapiens are no longer in charge of anything, despite our terrifying and irreversible wounding of a planet reeling from climate change. It’s a coin-toss whether there will be anything around at the end of the next decade capable of reading this fine book." —Doug Peacock, author of Grizzly Years (1996) and Walking It Off
Christopher Schaberg is Dorothy Harrell Brown Distinguished Professor of English at Loyola University New Orleans, USA. He is the author of The Textual Life of Airports: Reading the Culture of Flight (2013) and The End of Airports (2015) and co-editor of Deconstructing Brad Pitt (2014). He is series co-editor (with Ian Bogost) of Bloomsbury's Object Lessons.

Helen Gillet will be joined by Drummer Doug Garrison for a night of cello loops and percussion sonic archaeology.

Doors open approximately thirty minutes before show time, seating is first come, first serve after house open.

Helen Gillet
is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archeologist exploring synthesized sounds, texture, and rhythm using an acoustic cello. For someone with her varied background, New Orleans, with its mix of cultures and musics, seemed like a natural place to call home. She was born in Belgium, raised in Singapore from the ages of 2 to 11, and routinely shuttled between the homelands of her Belgian father and American mother. Over the years — working in New Orleans with musicians of all stripes, from avant-garde jazz and classical to pop and funk — Gillet has developed a singular polyglot style. The core of her work is solo performance with live looping, layering cello parts and vocal lines. Rhythmic figures emerge with bowed or plucked ostinatos or a variety of rubbing and slapping on the body of the cello, then enhanced with melodies played or sung in her haunting alto. Her mixed musical vocabulary is commensurate with her disparate travels — French chanson of the 1940s, Belgian folk tunes sung in Walloon, a mix of rock and punk from the likes of PJ Harvey and X-Ray Spex, and her own affecting originals, like audience favorite “Julien,” sung in a mix of French and English. Gillet’s solo performance is known for its enigmatic quality as she fabricates each song with innovative use of the cello and true mastery of live looping technology.

Wednesday Night Flights, Montalcino VS Montepulciano - A Tale of Two Tuscan Villages, 5:30 to 7:30PM Just 22 miles of some of the most gorgeous wine country in the world separates the Tuscan hilltowns of Montalcino and Montepulciano. Montalcino, of course, is the famed home of Brunello di Montalcino while the lesser known village of Montepulciano producers Vino Nobile - both using clones of the Sangiovese grape to produce stunning, age worthy wines.

Brunello di Montalcino, and its younger sibling, Rosso di Montalcino, are both produced using exclusively Sangiovese grapes, Sangiovese in purezza as the locals say. They are, in fact, the only DOC wines in Italy that are required to be 100% Sangiovese. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, or the noble wine as locally known, and Rosso di Montepulciano has been made using the Sangiovese clone Prugnolo Gentile in the region for centuries. The wine was hailed in 1549 by the cellar master for Pope Paul III as being the ‘perfect wine’, yet in the more recent decades, its halo has been clipped by more the famous Montalcino.

Join Erin and Bridget as we explore these differences in a blind flight - a Vino Nobile and Rosso di Montepulciano vs a Brunello and a Rosso di Montalcino. What is the difference in terroir? Aging requirements? Wine style and flavor profile? How does Vino Nobile hold up to its popular sibling? The wines will be presented blind, not as a test to see if you can determine which is which, although that will be fun as well, but to keep any preconceived notions of place out of the mix. What we really want to know is what you think. Is the quality similar? The taste? Do you prefer one bottle over another? And most importantly, do you like them? If you'd like a little something to snack on with your flight, Cheesemonger Casey Foote will design a cheese plate focused on pairings with cheeses from central Italy. Tickets are $20 each and you can reserve a cheese plate in advance for $13 ($18 normally).

Friday Free For All, December 13, 6-8PM - Join Margaret Swords from Lirette Selections for a great lineup of 4 free wines! Plus our friends at   Faubourg Farms  will be dishing out their delicious small plates. The wine tasting is free and open to the public, no reservations required. 6-8PM

Special Grower Champagne Flight with Michael Knisley, Tuesday, December 16, 5:30 to 7:30PM Bubblyotheque's Michael Knisley is making a special guest appearance on Tuesday, December 17th to pour a flight of delicious grower Champagnes! Michael has been splitting his time between New Orleans and Oregon where he owns Ambonnay, Portland's cozy, elegant and only dedicated Champagne bar. He is only in town for a quick visit and we are excited to have him host a flight next week. He'll present 3 single variety wines from the 3 main grapes of Champagne - 100% Pinot Noir, Champagne Les Clandestins Les Semblables; 100% Pinot Meunier, Champagne Francis Orban Extra Brut Cuvée; 100% Chardonnay, Champagne Guiborat Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs.
No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 3 wines is $20 - reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows. All wines are available for purchase to have at Swirl or you can take them to go.

Rivertown Theaters is Proud to Present The Original Cast & Creators in “Scrooge in Rouge,” the Raucous Holiday Show by Ricky Graham & Company

A Non-stop Farce Guaranteed to Get Audiences in a Ho Ho Ho, Ha Ha Ha Holiday Spirit!

Ricky Graham, every New Orleanians’ favorite funny man, and his jolly comical crew are back on the Rivertown Mainstage to bring some different kind of holiday cheer with this Christmas musical that has theatergoers coming back for more!

Local favorites Ricky Graham, Varla Jean Merman, Yvette Hargis and Jefferson Turner wrote this uproarious Christmas musical y'all! The creators themselves reprise their roles for the Rivertown audiences!

Get in the holiday spirit with this quick-change, cross-dressing musical version "somewhat loosely based on the idea of 'A Christmas Carol'. The "Royal Music Hall Variety Players" have a widespread case of food poisoning. This leaves only three surviving members to soldier on through a performance of A Christmas Carol originally intended for twenty. With bad puns, bawdy vaudeville humorisms, naughty double-entendres, and witty songs, it’s a most wonderful holiday treat!
Book and Lyrics by Ricky Graham. Music by Jefferson Turner. Additional Material by Jeffery Roberson and Other Interesting Bits by Yvette Hargis . Rated PG

Christmas on the Bayou
Dec 13, 2019 - Dec 15, 2019
Playmakers Theater, Covington, LA
A season extra, this is the true story of Father Adrien E. Rouquette. Born in 1813 in New Orleans, Rouquette was a writer and Catholic missionary who, for some 30 years, lived among the Native Americans of the forests along the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. He devoted his life to helping the Choctaw, and built five cabin chapels to sleep in, write and conduct Mass. By 1859, he was accepted as an honorary member and granted the name Chahta-Ima, meaning "Like a Choctaw," which he began to use in his professional life. He lived among the tribe on the banks of Bayou Lacombe until his death in 1887.
The story is fun, funny, in the holiday spirit, dramatic, and based on true events.
Performances are 7:00 PM on Friday and 1:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $10.

December 20 – Elf
David Sedaris's
 wickedly funny comedy
Santaland Diaries.
Geared towards a mature audience, this show  is a brilliant evocation of what a slacker's Christmas must feel like. Out of work, our slacker decides to become a Macy's elf during the holiday crunch. At first the job is simply humiliating, but once the thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa's workshop, he becomes battle-weary and bitter. The piece ends with yet another Santa being ushered into the workshop, but this one is different from the drunken ones with whom he has had to work. This Santa actually seems to care about and love the children who come to see him, startling our hero into an uncharacteristic moment of goodwill, just before his employment runs out.
The Santaland Diaries will be presented Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. at Wharton's Green Room, 521 E. Boston St., in downtown Covington. Tickets are $15.

 O. Henry's magical The Gift of the Magi. Christmas approaches with little money at hand. Jim and Della each end up selling their most valuable possessions in order to buy the other's Christmas present. The ironic O. Henry ending is both humorous and bittersweet as both characters discover a more realistic world-one dominated by their love.
The Gift of the Magi will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22 at the Candy Bank, 201 Carroll St., in Mandeville. Tickets are $15.

French Literature Discussion Group Focuses on

Stendhal’s
The Red and the Black
The French Literature Discussion Group will discuss Stendhal’s  The Red and the Black  on four Monday nights during the fall of 2019 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
Each session is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.

The book is about 525 pages not counting the chronology, introduction and the appendixes. The Penguin Classic version is recommended.

All reading and discussion is conducted in English.

The Red and the Black  focuses on handsome, ambitious Julien Sorel, who is determined to rise above his humble provincial origins. Soon realizing that success can only be achieved by adopting the subtle code of hypocrisy by which society operates, he begins to achieve advancement through deceit and self-interest. His triumphant career takes him into the heart of glamorous Parisian society, along the way conquering the gentle, married Madame de Rênal, and the haughty Mathilde. But then Julien commits an unexpected, devastating crime—and brings about his own downfall.

Stendhal is the pen name of Henri Marie Beyle, who was born in Grenoble in 1783.  The Red and the Black  was his second novel, and he also produced or began three others, including  The Charterhouse at Parma  and  Lucien Leuwen . None of his published works was received with any great understanding during his lifetime.

7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16, 2019
Book Two, Chapter 24, Strasbourg, to Book Two, Chapter 45, which has no title (about 125 pages)
