NATIONAL CHOPSTICKS DAY

Each year on National Chopsticks Day, people worldwide celebrate the humble and ancient utensils on February 6th.

Around 1200 B.C., Chinese cooks began using chopsticks to prepare food. These tools were likely long enough to reach into hot cooking pots. Then about 400 B.C., when fuels for cooking became scarce, food was prepared in smaller pieces reducing the number of resources needed to cook it. At the same time, the need for sharp eating utensils faded, and shorter chopsticks entered the scene.

The Chinese term for chopsticks is kuai-tzu.

Once these handy eating tools found their way to the dinner table, they spread around the world. Portable and elegant in their design, they also vary in style from region to region.

Today chopsticks may be made from wood such as bamboo or aspen. Elaborately carved chopsticks may be cut from jade, ivory, or wood, and artisans may ornately paint some chopsticks with miniature scenes.

GNO, Inc. Sunday Night Highlight - Louisiana Partnership Wins Largest Grant Ever Awarded by U.S. National Science Foundation

  • Michael Hecht

  • A statewide effort led by LSU, with more than 50 public and private partners, including GNO, Inc., has been awarded the largest and most competitive grant ever from the U.S. National Science Foundation – up to $160 million over the next 10 years. Louisiana’s team, called “Future Use of Energy in Louisiana,” or FUEL, includes private energy companies, universities, community and technical colleges, and state agencies that will work together to drive technology and workforce development in support of Louisiana’s energy industry. GNO, Inc. supported the grant application process over the past year as a member of the Core Leadership Team, facilitating the coordination and strategy for workforce development, entrepreneurship, and commercialization components. Louisiana is one of ten winners from approximately 700 original applicants.
  •
  • The “NSF Engines Grant” will support research and commercialization in responsible energy transition, particularly on how to grow jobs while decarbonizing Louisiana’s industrial corridor. Louisiana is a world leader in energy expertise and solutions, with more than 250,000 people working in the energy, chemical and petrochemical industries. Louisiana’s geographic location and its existing infrastructure of plants, refineries and 50,000 miles of pipelines make the state the natural epicenter of energy transition. Focus areas of the grant will include carbon capture, transport, and storage; hydrogen; use of carbon dioxide to produce low-carbon fuels and essential carbon-based products; water use and management; sustainable manufacturing; and policy development.
  •
  • Grant partners include the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources; the Louisiana Board of Regents; the Baton Rouge Area Chamber; Greater New Orleans, Inc.; ExxonMobil; Shell; and Baker Hughes. FUEL will build upon the work already being done by GNO, Inc.'s H2theFuture green hydrogen grant, and the LSU Institute for Energy Innovation, which was established in 2022 to coordinate LSU’s efforts related to the energy transition while also serving as a single access point to the university’s energy resources. Through Louisiana Economic Development, the state will contribute to the project with an additional $67.5 million in funding over the next 10 years. That funding will aim to help higher education partners build world-class teams to convert research into practical solutions.

Uptown, Tuesday MarketNext Market: February 6, 2024

8 am to 12 pm

Uptown Square

200 Broadway Street at the River

Directions and Parking Tips

The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.

RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.

From I-10

From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

Bo Dallis and The Wild Magnolias

The Wild Magnolias Among the many Mardi Gras "Indians" in New Orleans, The Wild Magnolias are well-known for their talent and flamboyance. Mardi Gras "Indians" are not, by the way, Native Americans. The Mardi Gras Indians are black working-class groups that are part secret and spiritual society and part neighborhood social club. Fifteen or so "tribes" parade on Mardi Gras Day, chanting, singing, and beating percussion instruments. They are costumed in elaborate handmade outfits that fancifully recall the dress of Native Americans, complete with feathers, ornate beadwork, and enormous headdresses. The origins of this tradition, which has striking parallels in the Caribbean, especially in Trinidad, have yet to be conclusively documented. The "Indian" tradition is also cited as another instance of New OrleansÆ status as the northern frontier of Caribbean culture. African, Creole, Indian and Spanish roots have been suggested, and some synthesis of all theseemsources seems likely. This is also true of the meanings and etymologies of the chants. The original words and context are difficult to trace, but today the function is assertive peer-group bonding. Big Chief Theodore ile "Bo" Dollis was born in New Orleans in 1944. As a child he followed a tribe known as the White Eagles, and he began "masking" as a Mardi Gras "Indian" in 1957 as a member of the Golden Arrows. In 1964 Dollis became the Big Chief of the Wild Magnolias. In 1970 the Wild Magnolias recorded a single entitled Handa Wanda for the Crescent City label; nearly 30 years later Handa Wanda r ains a local favorite and a perennial Mardi Gras classic. Two albums were produced in the mid-'70s, The Wild Magnolias and They Call Us Wild, on Rounder Records. Life is a Carnival marked their debut on the Metro Blue label. Joseph Pierre "Monk" Boudreaux was born in New Orleans in 1941. He has "masked Indian" since the late 1950s, and collaborated with Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias since the mid-'70s. Boudreaux is exclusively featured on Lightning and Thunder: The Golden Eagles Recorded Live and in Context at the H& R&Bar, New Orleans, a 1988 release on Rounder. Dollis and Boudreaux continue to revel in their culture, music, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and splendid costumes, just as they have done for decades.

Which lake is the largest by volume in the world?

Caspian Sea

Lake Baikal

The freshwater lake with the greatest volume is Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia, with an estimated volume of 23,615.390 cubic kilometres (5,665.63 cubic miles). Located in a geological rift valley in south-eastern Siberia, Lake Baikal is 636 kilometres (395 miles) long, with an average width of only 48 kilometres(30 miles). Soundings taken from the lake's Central Basin revealed it to be 1,642 metres (5,387 feet) deep, also making it the world's deepest lake.

The lake has an area of 31,722 square kilometres (12,247 square miles).

Baikal's depth and volume are based on the findings of a bottom-relief survey carried out by Navy Hydrographic Survey expeditions in 1979–87, which were compiled into bathymetric maps in 1992. This data was digitized, corrected and updated with material from other surveys in 1999. Funding for the project was provided by INTAS (International Association for the promotion of cooperation with scientists from the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union).

The revised depth and volume of Lake Baikal were published in the report "Computer-based Bathymetric Map of Lake Baikal", which appeared in Doklady Earth Sciences, vol. 408, issue 1, in May 2006. The authors of the report are P P Sherstyankin, S P Alekseev, A M Abramov, K G Stavrov, M De Batist, R His, M Canals and J L Casamor.

Ready For Battle

Florida

PMAC

LSU set a program record for points scored in a SEC game with a 106-66 victory over Florida on Sunday in the PMAC to end a two-game slide.

“I thought you saw a team today that brought it,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “It wasn’t smooth, it started out rough, but they brought another level of intensity. They had a fire in their belly defensively. I was very pleased with how they responded.”

LSU had six players score in double-figures, led by Hailey Van Lith who had a season-high 21 points and Mikaylah Williams who matched with her own 21 points. Van Lith was an efficient 6-11 from the field and 9-10 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed a season-high 7 rebounds. Williams was 9-12, also scoring at an efficient level including 3-5 from long range.

“I think it’s mostly just the attitude and competitiveness that I bring to the table,” Van Lith said. “It will help our team. I have to bring it or we aren’t going to reach our potential. So it’s on me to continue to do that.”

The double-double duo of Aneesah Morrow and Angel Reese combined for 32 points and 30 of LSU’s 59 rebounds. Morrow earned her 14th double-double of the season with 18 points and a season-high 20 boards. Morrow added a pair of threes and two blocks. Reese scored 14 points and hauled in 10 boards for her 13th double-double this season. This marked the 10th time this season LSU has had multiple players record double-doubles in the same game. Aalyah Del Rosario, who scored 11 points, was one rebound shy of her own double-double.

LSU’s 106 points were the most scored in a SEC game in program history, surpassing the 103 points LSU scored at Alabama in 2004.

What does "tintinnabulation" mean?

tintinnabulation tin-ti-nab-yuh-ley-shuhn

Definition: the ringing or sound of bells

Origin: The word "tintinnabulation" comes from the Latin word "tintinnabulum", which means "bell". Edgar Allan Poe popularized the word in his poem "The Bells" in 1849.

Example: The tintinnabulation of the church bells announced the beginning of the wedding ceremony.

The ringing or sound of bells is a common occurrence in human history. From church bells to school bells, bells have been used to signify important events or to call attention to something. The sound of bells can be calming or exciting, depending on the context. In many cultures, bells are associated with spirituality or the divine, and are used in religious ceremonies. The sound of bells can also be used for practical purposes, such as to signal the beginning or end of a class or work period. Overall, the tintinnabulation of bells has played an important role in human society and continues to do so today.

NATIONAL FROZEN YOGURT DAY

National Frozen Yogurt Day on February 6th recognizes a sweet frozen dessert that has gone from fad status to staple freezer item in a few decades.

Frozen yogurt sales are increasing every year as people want a healthier alternative to ice cream. The explosion of flavors and topping choices add to the popularity of frozen yogurt.

H.P Hood developed the first frozen yogurt in 1970 in the United States. It was created as a soft-serve treat called Frogurt. Not long afterward, Humphreys and Dannon released their own versions of frozen yogurt. Its popularity grew in the 80s, mostly due to frozen yogurts "health food" status. Ice cream manufacturers soon caught on, offering low-fat options.

Frozen yogurt is again making a comeback as consumers have begun to prefer the tart taste of yogurt. Not only does it find its way into home freezers, but it also is a sweet stop after work or play.

1917

The California Associated Raisin Company trademarked the Sun-Maid name. Just two years before, advertising executive E.A. Berg created an advertising campaign inspired by the very raisins dried by the sun. In an interesting twist of fate, Sun-Maid executive Leroy Payne spotted a young Lorraine Collett in a red bonnet and asked her to pose for a painting that would later become the Sun-Maid logo.

1937

Covici Friede publishes John Steinbeck's novella  Of Mice and Men. Set during the Great Depression, the story follows two migrant ranch workers, George and Lennie, who dream of owning their own ranch someday. Steinbeck adapted the book into a three-act play.

1935

Parker Brothers sold its first Monopoly game. Originally called "The Landlord's Game," it was created in 1903 by Lizzie Magie.

1971

Alan Shepard delivers airmail like he’s never seen before when he hits two golf balls on the Moon. During his third mission to the Moon, the Apollo 14 astronaut took three swings with his specialized club to hit the two golf balls, making the first golf drives in space.

February 6th Celebrated History

Babe Ruth - 1895

With some of baseball's most colorful nicknames, including the Sultan of Swat, Babe Ruth captivated baseball for 22 seasons. During his career, he spent most of his time with the New York Yankees but he left a curse with the Boston Red Sox and also spent time with the Atlanta Braves.

Wordplay and Wit: Exploring the Art of Clever Language

Language is a powerful tool that humans have developed to communicate, express emotions, and convey ideas. However, language can also be used in a playful and clever manner, creating a delightful form of expression known as wordplay. Wordplay involves manipulating words and phrases, often using puns, double entendres, or clever word choices, to create humorous or thought-provoking effects. In this blog post, we will dive into the world of wordplay and wit, exploring the art of clever language and its various forms.

The Power of Puns

One of the most well-known forms of wordplay is the pun. A pun is a play on words that exploits multiple meanings of a term or uses words that sound similar but have different meanings. Puns are often used to add humor or create a clever twist in a sentence. For example, "I used to be a baker, but I couldn't make enough dough" is a pun that plays on the double meaning of "dough" as both a type of bread and slang for money.

Puns can be found in various aspects of our lives, from witty one-liners to clever advertising slogans. They can be used to lighten the mood, create a memorable phrase, or simply entertain. However, crafting a good pun requires a keen understanding of language and a knack for finding connections between words that others might overlook.

Double Entendres: Language with a Twist

Double entendres are another form of wordplay that relies on using a word or phrase that has two different meanings, often one of which is risqué or suggestive. Double entendres can be found in literature, comedy, and everyday conversations, adding a layer of complexity and amusement to the language.

These clever word choices often involve a play on words, allowing the speaker to imply a hidden meaning while maintaining plausible deniability. For example, the statement "I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. It's impossible to put down!" uses the double entendre of "put down" to imply both physically placing the book down and being unable to stop reading it due to its engaging nature.

Double entendres can be a delicate balancing act, as they must be clever enough to be entertaining but not too explicit as to offend or alienate the audience. When used effectively, they can create a sense of fun and intrigue, making the listener or reader feel clever for catching the hidden meaning.

Wit and Wisdom: Harnessing the Power of Clever Language

Wit, often associated with quick thinking and cleverness, is closely related to wordplay. Wit involves using language in a creative and intelligent way, often to make a sharp observation or deliver a clever retort. Wit can take many forms, from clever wordplay to sarcastic remarks or clever turns of phrase.

Witty individuals have the ability to think on their feet and find the perfect words to express their thoughts in a memorable and amusing way. Their cleverness adds an element of entertainment to conversations and can make even mundane topics more engaging. Wit can also be seen in written works, where authors use clever language to entertain and captivate readers.

Exploring Cultural Wordplay

Wordplay is not limited to a specific language or culture. In fact, different languages and cultures have their own unique forms of wordplay that reflect their linguistic and cultural peculiarities. Exploring wordplay in different cultures can be a fascinating way to gain insight into the intricacies of language and the ways in which humor is created and appreciated.

For example, the Japanese language is rich in wordplay, with a particular form known as "oyaji gags" involving puns and clever word choices. In Chinese, wordplay is often used in idioms and proverbs, adding depth and complexity to their meanings. By delving into the wordplay of different cultures, we can broaden our understanding of language and appreciate the diversity of human expression.

The Fine Line Between Cleverness and Confusion

While wordplay and wit can be entertaining and thought-provoking, they can also be misunderstood or misinterpreted. Clever language choices may confuse or alienate some individuals, especially those who are not familiar with the cultural references or linguistic nuances being used. It is important to strike a balance between cleverness and clarity, ensuring that the intended message is effectively communicated without leaving the audience perplexed.

Additionally, wordplay and wit may not always be appropriate in every context. What may be amusing in a casual conversation among friends may come across as inappropriate or offensive in a professional setting. It is essential to consider the audience and the context when using clever language, ensuring that it is well-received and appropriate for the situation.

Embracing the Art of Clever Language

Wordplay and wit add a touch of creativity and amusement to our language. They allow us to explore the intricacies of words, challenge our linguistic abilities, and create connections that entertain and engage. Whether it's a well-crafted pun, a clever double entendre, or a witty remark, the art of clever language invites us to appreciate the beauty and versatility of words.

So, next time you come across a clever play on words or find yourself crafting a witty remark, take a moment to celebrate the art of clever language. Embrace the power of wordplay and wit, and let it infuse your conversations and writings with humor, intelligence, and a touch of linguistic brilliance.

Cafe du Monde in the French Quarter in 1950s

Café du Monde was founded by Fred Koeniger in 1862. Hubert Fernandez purchased the coffee stand in May of 1942 and the business has remained in his family since. At the time of purchase, Fernandez also owned the Fernandez Wine Cellar directly across the street, in the Pontalba Apartment Building. In 1972, the family closed the cellar in order to focus all their time and attention on the coffee stand.

Chiefs vs. Niners

The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl LVIII after both teams won their respective conference championship games yesterday.

The Chiefs will be making their fourth trip to the title game in five years after beating the Baltimore Ravens on the road, 17-10. Tight end Travis Kelce caught all 11 passes thrown his way, including a touchdown, en route to breaking Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice's record for all-time playoff receptions (151). The game turned on a pair of endzone turnovers by the Ravens in the fourth quarter.

San Francisco topped the Detroit Lions 34-31 at home, holding the Lions to seven points in the second half and overcoming a 24-7 halftime deficit to reach their first championship since 2019. Star running back Christian McCaffrey ran for 90 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.

Super Bowl LVII takes place Sunday, Feb. 11 (6:30 pm ET, CBS), in Las Vegas, with R&B star Usher headlining the halftime show.

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

  • Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
  • Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon

For instance, almost every month’s Full Moon boasts a name sourced from Native American, Colonial American, or other North American traditions, with their titles mirroring seasonal shifts and nature’s events.

Wolf Moon (January): Inspired by the cries of hungry wolves.

Snow Moon (February): A nod to the month’s often heavy snowfall.

Worm Moon (March): Named after the earthworms that signal thawing grounds.

Pink Moon (April): In honor of the blossoming pink wildflowers.

Related: How to see the eclipse in April

Flower Moon (May): Celebrating the bloom of flowers.

Strawberry Moon (June): Marks the prime strawberry harvest season.

Buck Moon (July): Recognizing the new antlers on bucks.

Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.

Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.

Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.

Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.

Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.

In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.

Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.

Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.

Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

Errol Laborde’s Columns!

When Rex Met Zulu Explains Real Life Stories

That Could Happen Only in New Orleans

METAIRIE – Errol Laborde, author of a new book of his columns titled When Rex Met Zulu, will discuss it at 7  p.m., Monday, March 4, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and open to the public.

In chapters ranging from food and drink to history and ware, this book shares real life stories that could happen only in New Orleans. Errol Laborde was the force behind the now-beloved tradition of Zulu meeting Rex at Spanish Plaza on Lundi Gras before a loud, excited crowd on the eve of Fat Tuesday. LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
