NATIONAL NOTHING DAY

Each year on January 16th, people across the nation recognize National Nothing Day.

The observance was created as a day to provide Americans with one National Day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing or honoring anything. (National Day Calendar only reports the Days, sometimes they may contradict themselves.)

Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on the third Monday of January which means that one-in-seven January 16th’s will fall on the same day as Nothing Day, effectively usurping the nature of Nothing Day.

While it may be a good day to celebrate nothing at all, we suppose putting nothing in a glass and setting it on a table might suffice for celebration. You might leave your diary page blank every January 16th. Don't mark anything on the calendar on the 16th, either. It would be interesting to see what would happen if you sent a blank email dated January 16th. How many replies would you get saying, "There's nothing here."

For people whose birthday lands on January 16th, wrap an empty box. That should elicit a nothing response appropriate for the celebration.

When asked, "What are your plans, today?" your response should definitely be, "Nothing." What else would your answer be on a day like today? Now that we think about it, "Nothing" works well as an answer when recognizing the day.

Q: What's for supper?

A: Nothing

Q: What are you reading?

A. Nothing. (Even though you're clearly reading something.)

Q. What's your homework assignment?

A. Nothing. (As you're working on your homework.)

Q. What are you drinking?

A. Nothing. (As you sip on the best non-fat latte ever.)

If you’re the type of traveler to book an entire trip around a really great meal, then man, do we have a destination for you.

On Tuesday, Tripadvisor released its Best of the Best Destinations, which catalogs top spots for travel across seven categories — Top Destinations, Trending Destinations, Culture Destinations, Nature Destinations, Honeymoon Destinations, Sustainable Destinations, and one for foodies, Food Destinations. Each selection was picked after careful calculations based on the “quality and quantity of reviews, specific to each award subcategory, for accommodations, restaurants, and things to do in destinations from travelers globally on Tripadvisor between October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2023,” Tripadvisor explained in a statement.

For the best domestic, food-focused travel destination, Tripadvisor named New Orleans No. 1 once again.

“With its famed culinary scene, New Orleans has held onto its title for number one Food Destination in the U.S. for a second year in a row,” Tripadvisor added in its findings. “Overall, Southern destinations rank highly among foodies on Tripadvisor, with six of the top 10 cities in the American South.”

Meteorologist Payton Malone WWLTV

UPDATE: As with any winter weather forecast it's tricky and comes down to the difference between a couple degrees. The northshore has a greater chance of a light icing tonight as temps fall quickly into the 30s and 20s. That means a light glaze of ice could form on elevated surfaces including bridges and overpasses. Even a thin amount of ice can cause slick spots. Timing is after sunset and lasting through the night.

Ice chances on the southshore are much lower and less likely. However, if temps drop faster than expected, light icing is possible even near the metro. Far from a slam-dunk forecast, but one you want to follow closely.

NEW ORLEANS — This weekend is cool and beautiful before a big Arctic chill sweeps into south Louisiana early in the work week. Sunday will be warmer and mostly sunny. Clouds will increase at night.

The blast of Arctic air will charge in Monday. A few showers will be around mainly in the afternoon to evening. While a few sleet pellets could mix in north of the lake Monday night, this doesn't look like a big frozen precipitation event. No accumulation is expected but if you are driving on the Northshore use extra caution on bridges and overpasses just in case.

We will mainly just feel the frigid air blowing in Monday night to Tuesday and then delivering a hard freeze Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Overnight lows could brush upper teens north of the lake and middle 20 south. Protect exposed outdoor pipes as well as plants, pets and people. We'll warm up Thursday with another front on Friday.

There is still plenty of time to protect from the deep freeze. Freezing temperatures won't arrive for the Northshore until Tuesday morning and for both north and south until Wednesday morning.

Detailed Forecast

MLK DAY:

40% chance of scattered rain showers. Warmer and breezy, then much colder late. Low: S 45, N 38. High: 61.

TUESDAY:

WEDNESDAY:

Morning hard freeze north and south of the lake. Mostly sunny and very cold. Low: S 25, N 19. High: 42.

THURSDAY:

Morning hard freeze north of the lake, frost possible south of the lake. Partly cloudy and cool. Low: S 34, N 27. High: 60.

FRIDAY:

30% chance of scattered showers. Mostly cloudy and breezy. Low: S 50, N 48. High: 59.

SATURDAY:

Morning light freeze north of the lake, frost possible south of the lake. Sunny and chilly. Low: S 36, N 32. High: 49.

Our newly elected Louisiana State Treasurer, John Fleming, will discuss the workings of the State Treasury at the Ronald Reagan Newsmaker Luncheon at 12 noon Tuesday, January 16, and you are invited to come out and meet him.

The Reagan Luncheon will be held at Porter & Luke’s Restaurant, 1517 Metairie Road, Metairie. The new state treasurer was just sworn in and this will be his first public address in the New Orleans metropolitan area.

Dr. John Fleming is a physician, entrepreneur, military veteran, and former Congressman from the 4th district of Louisiana. He served four terms in Congress from 2009- 2017.

Fleming grew up in a working-class home. His father died while he was still in high school, leaving him with no breadwinner in the home, two younger siblings, and a disabled mother. Despite such hardships, John worked his way through college and was accepted into medical school. After his residency in Family Medicine, Dr. Fleming served as a Naval Medical Officer. After leaving the military, he set up a medical practice in Minden where he lives today. In addition, he started several companies that operate commercial real estate and multi-unit franchise companies that continue to operate today.

He was elected State Treasurer in November with 65 percent of the vote statewide.

John and Cindy Fleming have been married for 44 years. They have four grown children and five grandchildren.

Organ demonstrations

Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.

Barbara S. Beckman Music Room, 520 Royal Street

Free admission and no RSVP required

Join THNOC staff for a short program exploring the history of the beautifully restored Aeolian residential player pipe organ. Listen to a musical demonstration and discover the significance of this rare and technologically advanced musical instrument.

In the early 20th century, having a player organ in the home was a luxury reserved for the most opulent residences, allowing the owner to have access to recorded music before radios and phonographs were commonplace. Tobacco magnate William Ratcliffe Irby remodeled the property at 520 Royal Street—now part of THNOC’s exhibition center—to serve as his personal residence starting in 1918. In the process he installed a player organ in the entry room to his lavish third-floor apartment. The instrument, built by the Aeolian Company of New York, is one of a handful that has survived to this day in its original location and in working condition, after a meticulous restoration by the Holtkamp Organ Company.

What does "soliloquy" mean?

A solitary speech

soliloquy Pronunciation: /səˈlɪləkwi/

Definition: a soliloquy is a literary or dramatic speech delivered by a character in a play or a piece of writing, expressing their inner thoughts and feelings. It is typically spoken aloud and intended for the audience's benefit, while other characters on stage may not be aware of the character's monologue.

Origin: The word "soliloquy" originates from the Latin word "solus," meaning "alone," and "loqui," meaning "to speak." It entered the English language in the late 16th century.

Example: In Shakespeare's play Hamlet, the famous soliloquy begins with the line, "To be, or not to be: that is the question." This introspective monologue allows the audience to glimpse into Hamlet's contemplations about life and death.

A solitary speech is another way to describe what a soliloquy means. It refers to a character speaking alone on stage or in writing, sharing their private thoughts and emotions with the audience. This form of dialogue provides insight into the character's motives, conflicts, and inner world, allowing the audience to develop a deeper understanding of the story. Solitary speech serves as a powerful tool for character development and introspection, giving the audience a unique perspective that may not be revealed through regular dialogue and interaction with other characters.

Punctuation Power: Mastering the Art of Using Commas, Dashes, and More

Punctuation is an essential aspect of effective writing. It helps to convey meaning, clarify ideas, and improve the overall readability of a piece. While there are several punctuation marks, commas and dashes are two of the most frequently used ones. In this blog post, we will explore the correct usage of commas, dashes, and more to help you master the art of punctuation.

The Mighty Comma

Commas are versatile punctuation marks that serve various purposes in writing. They can be used to separate items in a list, set off nonessential information, indicate pauses, and much more.

1. Separating Items in a List: Commas are used to separate items in a list. For example, "She bought apples, oranges, and bananas from the grocery store."

2. Setting Off Nonessential Information: Commas are also used to set off nonessential information or clauses within a sentence. For instance, "The book, which was published last year, has become a bestseller."

3. Indicating Pauses: Commas can indicate pauses in a sentence, helping to break up the flow of ideas. For example, "I went to the store, picked up some milk, and then returned home."

4. Joining Independent Clauses: Commas are used to join two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (such as 'and', 'but', 'or') to form a compound sentence. For instance, "She loves to read, but he prefers watching movies."

Emphasizing with Dashes

Dashes are punctuation marks that can be used to emphasize a point or set off a phrase. They provide a stronger break than commas and parentheses, drawing attention to the enclosed information.

1. Emphasizing a Point: Dashes can be used to emphasize a point or draw attention to a specific part of a sentence. For example, "She had one goal in mind - to win the race."

2. Setting Off a Phrase: Dashes can also be used to set off a phrase or clause within a sentence. For instance, "The weather - cloudy and unpredictable - ruined our picnic plans."

A Nabisco's trademarked version of the fig roll, Newtons are a pastry filled with fig paste. Fig Newtons have an unusual and characteristic shape that has been adopted by many competitors, including generic fig bars.

Up until the 19th century, many physicians believed most illnesses were related to digestion problems. As a remedy, they recommended a daily intake of biscuits and fruit. Fig rolls served as an ideal solution to their advice, which remained a locally produced handmade product.

In 1891, Philadelphia baker and fig-lover Charles Roser invented and patented the machine, which inserted fig paste into a thick pastry dough. The Cambridgeport, MA-based Kennedy Biscuit Company then purchased Roser's recipe. They began mass production after purchasing the recipe. In 1891, they produced the first Fig Newtons baked at the F.A. Kennedy Steam Bakery. The company named the pastries after the town of Newton, Massachusetts.

After recently becoming associated, the Kennedy Biscuit Company and the New York Biscuit company merged to form Nabisco. The new company trademarked the fig rolls as Fig Newtons.

January 16th Celebrated History

1883

President Chester Arthur signed the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, creating the U.S. civil service system. The act established a merit basis for federal jobs and promotions and made it illegal to fire or demote government employees for political reasons.

1919

The states ratify the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution. A year later, the amendment goes into effect on January 17th. It prohibited "manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors..." In between, Congress passed the Volstead Act providing the means to enforce the 18th Amendment. The "noble experiment" ended on December 5, 1933, when the states ratified the 21st Amendment, repealing Prohibition.

1968

On October 15, 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Department of Transportation. A few months later, on January 16, 1968, Johnson appointed the first Secretary of Transportation, Alan Boyd.

1969

The Soviet Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5 completed the first docking mission while in orbit above the Earth. Each spacecraft were crewed by two cosmonauts, and while docked, they performed a spacewalk and switched spacecraft for the return flight home.

January 16th Celebrated Birthdays

Sarah Rosetta Wakeman – 1843

During the American Civil War, Sarah Wakeman disguised herself as a man to earn more money. Using either the name Lyons or Edwin Wakeman to find work, she eventually enlisted in the Union Army under the name Lyons. She served until 1864 when she died of dysentery. Only Wakeman’s letters home revealed her true identity.

André Michelin - 1853

The French industrialist and his brother Édouard Michelin transformed their grandfather's business in 1888, renaming it Michelin and Company. A year later, their detachable-pneumatic tires would revolutionize transportation.

Ethel Merman - 1909

The comedic actress and singer rose to stardom on the Broadway stage in shows like Hello, Dolly, Girl Crazy, and Gypsy. Her talent translated to the silver screen, earning her a Golden Globe for 1954's Call Me Madam.

Dian Fossey - 1932

It only took one experience with mountain gorillas to convince the American zoologist to return and establish the Karisoke Research Centre. From then on, Fossey dedicated and gave her life to studying gorillas and developing conservation efforts. Her efforts drew unwanted attention from smugglers and poachers in Rwanda. On December 26, 1985, Fossey was murdered in her bed, and the crime has never been solved.

Ronnie Milsap - 1944

One of country music’s most popular performers rose to the top of the charts during the 1970s. Some of the Grammy-winning singer and pianist’s best-known songs include “Stranger in My House,” “Any Day Now,” and “She Keeps the Home Fires Burning.”

Debbie Allen - 1950

The talented performer's long career of successful television shows includes Fame and Grey's Anatomy. She also appeared in one episode of The Cosby Show with her real-life sister Phylicia Rashad.

The Versatile Semicolon

Semicolons are often misunderstood but can be incredibly useful in connecting related ideas or separating items in a list.

1. Connecting Related Ideas: Semicolons can be used to connect two closely related independent clauses without a coordinating conjunction. For example, "She studied all night; she wanted to ace the exam."

2. Separating Items in a List: Semicolons can also be used to separate items in a list when the items themselves contain commas. For instance, "We visited Paris, France; Rome, Italy; and Barcelona, Spain."

The Importance of Apostrophes

Apostrophes are used to indicate possession or to form contractions. Understanding their proper usage is crucial for clear and correct writing.

1. Indicating Possession: Apostrophes are used to indicate possession. For example, "The dog's toy" or "Sarah's car."

2. Forming Contractions: Apostrophes are also used to form contractions, which combine two words into one. For instance, "can't" (cannot) or "it's" (it is).

The Intricacies of Parentheses

Parentheses are used to enclose additional information or clarify a point. They can provide further details without interrupting the flow of the sentence.

1. Enclosing Additional Information: Parentheses are used to enclose additional information that is not essential to the main sentence. For example, "She planned to visit her friend (who lives in London) next month."

2. Clarifying a Point: Parentheses can also be used to clarify a point or provide further explanation. For instance, "The movie was entertaining (though some found it too long)."

The Unassuming Colon

Colons are used to introduce a list, provide emphasis, or connect two related clauses. They serve as a signal that important information or a list is about to follow.

1. Introducing a List: Colons are often used to introduce a list or series of items. For example, "She bought all the ingredients for the recipe: flour, sugar, eggs, and butter."

2. Providing Emphasis: Colons can be used to provide emphasis or draw attention to a particular point. For instance, "He had one goal: to become a successful entrepreneur."

3. Connecting Related Clauses: Colons can also be used to connect two closely related clauses. For example, "The solution was simple: work harder and never give up."

Mastering the art of punctuation, including the correct usage of commas, dashes, and other punctuation marks, is crucial for effective writing. By understanding when and how to use these punctuation marks, you can enhance the clarity, coherence, and impact of your writing. So next time you sit down to write, remember the punctuation power at your disposal and wield it with confidence.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."

The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.

“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”

“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”

Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb.  Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.

“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."

“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

Middendorf's Seafood Restaurant

After you enjoy your Christmas tree this holiday season, recycle it at Middendorf's Manchac!

We're collecting trees to help with Southeastern Louisiana University's Manchac Wetlands Restoration Project. If you recycle your tree with us, you could also win a $50 gift card!

To enter the drawing, please drop-off your tree at Middendorf's Manchac during regular business hours (Wed-Sun, 10:30am-9:00pm) beginning on January 4. Pop-Up Trailer Opens

Our king cake trailer on Metairie Road opens! They will be located in the parking lot of The Ridgeway at 2431 Metairie Rd.

They'll be open 7 days a week until Lundi Gras (Feb. 12, 24). If they sell out, they will close early.

NEW ORLEANS  King Cake Drive-Thru will offer a curated selection of Greater New Orleans’ king cakes at your convenience throughout the Mardi Gras season. It will be located at Duckworth Tires’ parking lot, 1009 Metairie Rd., Metairie, Louisiana, 70005.

Chicago-born transplant to New Orleans, Mike Graves, owner of bof bars, a local novelty ice cream company, came up with this idea with his fiancée.

“If New Orleans can do drive-thru daiquiris, it surely can do a King Cake Drive-Thru,” says Graves.

As the 2024 Carnival season drew closer, plans began to form over the holidays, and King Cake Drive-Thru was born. Metairie was chosen specifically to hopefully provide a willing neighborhood accessibility to many different bakeries across the Greater New Orleans area.

A community driven business, King Cake Drive-Thru is not just for the well-known bakery names but also a platform for businesses without their own store-front, as well as up-and-coming bakers.

Expect king cakes from local favorites such as Gambino’s, Brennan’s, Gracious Bakery and Bittersweet Confections. Other lesser known but equally delicious king cakes include Clesi’s Crawfish King Cakes, Empanola’s Guava Cream Cheese King Cakes, Kimi Bakes King Cake Cream Puffs, Vietnamese Doughnguyener’s King Cakes and so much more for the weekly rotating menu.

Other convenience items will be offered such as a party pack complete with plates, napkins, utensils and a king cake knife for on-the-go use.

Graves emphasizes, “Keep your kids in the car. Don’t worry about parking. Pull up and head out. You can grab a favorite or snag a new king cake on the way to the office or on the way home for the family.”

Plans for another King Cake Drive-Thru pop-up location in Houston, Texas is in the works for later in the Mardi Gras season.

Dates/Times:

King Cake Drive-Thru will begin operations on King’s Day, Jan. 6, at 7 a.m. (1009 Metairie Road, Metairie, Louisiana, 70005).

Hours of operation are Friday thru Sunday from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. (or until sold out) throughout the Mardi Gras season.

To keep up with the weekly rotating menu, follow King Cake Drive-Thru via @kingcakedrivethru (Instagram), @kingcakedrivethru (Tiktok), and ‘King Cake Drive-Thru’ (Facebook).

We're happy to bring a piece of the past back to WYES . GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS, the vintage TV series that began WYES’ legacy of award-winning nationally broadcast cooking shows, returns to the station – 40 years after its debut. Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.

Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. It begins Saturday in the kitchen of the legendary Chef Warren Leruth, and you'll see many other local icons below in the weeks to come. For all the episodes, the distinctive voices of Mary Lou Conroy and Andres Calandria narrate, with original music from the Charlie Byrd Trio, the Dukes of Dixieland and Banu Gibson. Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Family Gras to feature Cheap Trick, Oak Ridge Boys, Amy Grant

 By WWL.com

It's classic rock and country music at the 2024 Family Gras in Metairie.

The 16th edition of the weekend festival will take place February 2-4, the "first parade weekend," as it's commonly known.

The festival begins Friday with Cajun fiddle player Amanda Shaw. Zebra, the New Orleans-born rock band, will also play Friday.

Grammy Award-winning artist Amy Grant headlines Saturday, featuring music from her three multi-platinum albums, six platinum albums and four gold albums including her six number one hits.

Classic rockers Cheap Trick will lead into Grant's set. Local artists Mad City and the Creole String Beans are also part of Saturday's lineup.

Family Gras closes out Sunday with Revisiting Credence, featuring Dan McGuinness and Kurt Griffey of Creedence Clearwater Revisited.

The Oak Ridge Boys, on their farewell tour, will perform. So will Tyler Hubbard, formerly of the country duo Florida-Georgia Line.

The event is free to the public, and takes place at Metairie's Mardi Gras Plaza, 3300 Veterans Memorial Blvd. across from Lakeside Shopping Center.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
