NOLA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT, COMMUNITY LEADERS JOIN THE ORLEANS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD IN EFFORT TO KEEP KIDS IN SCHOOL
NOLA-PS will host a community breakfast to address truancy and chronic absenteeism alongside city leaders, local businesses and non-profits for their “Keeping Kids in School” initiative

NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. and the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) are partnering with city agencies and community leaders in an effort to address truancy and chronic absenteeism issues within New Orleans public schools. NOLA-PS is hosting a community breakfast to discuss tactics on how to address these issues.

The breakfast will provide participants with an opportunity to develop a more thorough understanding of the impact of truancy and chronic absenteeism in New Orleans while striving to initiate change for our local youth. During the breakfast, participants will sign letters of commitment to join in the initiative as well as shape its future. Finally, Attendance Advocate Awards will be presented to members of the community whose remarkable efforts to support students and families in our community will be recognized.

Each year, about 25 percent of students in Orleans Parish are chronically absent, hindering student achievement and thereby impacting educational and economic outcomes for our students. Although school attendance issues can be attributed to many factors, those issues are not always understood by the wider public.

The Fundamentals of Cheese

Gone are the days of blindly fumbling through your grocery store’s cheese aisle. There’s a literal world of cheese out there, and this demonstration class will fill your proverbial passport. We’ll taste seven styles of cheese while answering FAQs like “Can I eat the rind?” and “What’s the deal with illegal cheese?” You’ll leave with a better understanding of why a Brie is soft and a Cheddar crumbly, plus cheesemonger-approved secrets for storage and tips on assembling the perfect board. Because cheese is best enjoyed with wine, we’ll have plenty of it.

About the Instructor
When Liz Thorpe‘s travelogue and compendium of American cheese, The Cheese Chronicles was published, reviewers said, “Young and hip, Liz accomplishes the impossible, making cheese seem sexy.” Liz has worked in cheese for sixteen years, for the first decade as the Vice President of New York’s Murray’s Cheese and more recently as the founder of consulting company The People’s Cheese. Her definitive tome The Book of Cheese was published in September 2017 and nominated for an IACP award as the year’s best reference book. Liz talks cheese with Rachael Ray, The Wall Street Journal and starred in Epicurious’s inaugural Price Points video—with 5.2M viewers it’s their most popular video ever. After all this time, she still thinks cheese is sexy.

His 2012 recording of the complete Chopin Waltzes received the Diapason d’Or de l’Annee, France’s most prestigious recording award. His 2005 live recording of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos was the fastest selling recording in Hyperion’s history, while his 1987 recording of the Hummel concertos remains Chandos’ best-selling disc to date. WYES TELLS THE STORY OF DIXIE BEER
New Documentary Narrated by Peggy Scott Laborde New Orleans, LA
With the new Dixie Brewery ready to open this month and Dixie Beer experiencing a rebirth, drink up more than a hundred years of local beer history with this new WYES documentary BIRTH OF THE BREWS: A HISTORY OF DIXIE BEER premiering Tuesday, January 28th at 8:00 p.m. BIRTH OF THE BREWS tells the story of Dixie Beer from its beginnings in 1907, when New Orleans was considered by many to be the brewing capital of the South. Dixie was one of nearly 50 breweries operating at the turn of the 20th century and became one of the most popular, along with Jax, Regal and Falstaff. Competition for local beer drinkers’ loyalty was fierce and the jingles, neon signs, clocks, trays and promotional pieces used to sell each distinctive brand remain beloved pieces of that past. The breweries themselves became landmarks, with the dome atop Dixie’s Tulane Avenue brewery and the nearby Falstaff weather ball becoming familiar sights. Dixie called itself “The One That Would Rather Be Best Than Biggest” and by the late 1970s, it was the only major local brewery left. Its survival story – through Prohibition, bankruptcy, Hurricane Katrina and its 2017 sale to Tom and Gayle Benson – makes its rebirth even more special. The program features classic jingles and commercials from some of the best-loved local beers including a 1970s Dixie Beer TV commercial featuring local icon Pete Fountain and his father, who was a Dixie delivery truck driver. Interviews include Dixie Beer and New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson, as well as Dixie coowner Kendra Bruno. Bruno and her husband Joseph helped keep the brewery alive in the 1980s and 90s as well as after Hurricane Katrina when the beer was brewed out of state. Also included in the 30-minute documentary are interviews with current Dixie Beer employees including general manager Jim Birch and brewmaster Kevin Stuart, who actually began working for Dixie in the 1980s on Tulane Avenue. Hear from local bar owner Edward Piglia, who is a beer memorabilia collector, Judge Edwin Lombard, musician “Deacon John” Moore and general manager and head chef of Parkway Bakery and Tavern Justin Kennedy.

Wednesday Flight - 4 Blind Cabs, January 29, 5:30 to 7:30 From Napa Valley to Bordeaux, Lebanon and Washington State (to name a few!) Cabernet is the world's most popular grape. Grown in nearly every major wine producing country, this darling of the wine world can be produced across a wide spectrum of terroir. It takes on its boldest expression in the New World - full bodied with firm tannins, black fruits and a variety of secondary flavors depending on where it's from. Join us as we explore the effect terroir has on the same variety - 4 New World Cabernets from Washington, California (Napa & North Coast) and Chile. The wines will be presented blind, not as a test to see if you can determine which is which, although that will be fun as well, but to keep any preconceived notions of place out of the mix. What we really want to know is what you think. Is the quality similar? The taste? Do you prefer one bottle over another? And most importantly, do you like them? No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 4 wines is $20 - reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows.  4  Blind Cabs

Greek Winemakers Friday Free For All, January 24, 6-8PM  Apostoles Thymiopoulos and Leonidas Nassiakos from Thymiopoulos and Semeli Winery in Greece will be a pouring a lineup of 6 wines from their estates this week. Plus our friends at Faubourg Farms will be dishing out their delicious small plates. This event is free and open to the public, no reservations are required.

Special Event - Meet the Winemaker, Rod Berglund Joseph Swan Wines Russian River Valley, Wednesday February 5th, 5:30 to 7:30PM  Taste wines from legendary California producer Joseph Swan poured by Winemaker/Owner Rod Berglund hosted by Swirl at the Cellar on Saint Louis on the Lafitte Greenway. There are very few wineries that have the history, or the reputation, of Joseph Swan. For nearly 50 years they have produced some of the greatest examples of California wines. Elegant, precise, and ultra-complex fine wines that can be very hard to find as they only produce tiny quantities from small, single vineyard sites in the Russian River. On this very special evening we will be led through a tasting of five wines by owner/winemaker Rod Berglund. Rod has been making wine in the Russian River Valley for more than three decades and is one of the most well respected producers in the US. In this seated tasting at the Cellar on Saint Louis, Rod will lead us through 5 of his cellar selections, wines from vintages which are no longer available. As a participant in the tasting you will have the opportunity to purchase these rare wines at discounted prices. For the lineup and to reserve your spot (reservations are required) go to  Joseph Swan

Meet and taste with Rod Berglund Joseph Swan Vineyards
Taste wines from legendary California producer Joseph Swan poured by Winemaker/Owner Rod Berglund! As club swirl members you are receiving the first notification of the event hosted by Swirl at the Cellar on Saint Louis on the Lafitte Greenway, 2500 Saint Louis Street on Wednesday, February 5th.

The winery was named after Joe Swan, who, in 1967, purchased a small farm on Laguna Road near the town of Forestville in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. When it came to grape-growing and winemaking, Joe believed that small scale would lead to beauty; a small vineyard could be tended by one person; small crops were more capable of producing more intense, age-worthy wines; a small winery allowed you to oversee every aspect, from fermentation to bottling. As a perfectionist, he felt that if the wine was to carry his name, then he should be personally responsible for every aspect of its production. After many years of planting and dedication and increasingly successful winemaking Joe sadly passed away to be succeeded by his son-in-law, Rod.

Rod Berglund has carried on Swan’s legacy admirably. Rod began his winemaking career in 1979. In 1986, he married Lynn Swan, and helped Joe with his last harvest in 1987. Rod has maintained Joe’s vision, and continues to produce wine reflective of the style that Joe developed over the years.

In this seated tasting at the Cellar on Saint Louis, Rod will lead us through 5 of his cellar selections, wines from vintages which are no longer available. As a participant in the tasting you will have the opportunity to purchase these rare wines at discounted prices. Here's the lineup and you can reserve your spot here  Joseph Swan

Carol Allen Leads a Seminar About Writing for Children

METAIRIE, LA –
Author and educator Carol Allen will lead a seminar for writers about creating children’s books at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.

Allen says that writing for children is serious business. “Anybody who thinks writing a picture book is to just scribble down some lines and draw great illustrations is making a serious mistake,” she says. “There are rules for picture books and there are serious points to address in your writing: Point of view; voice, character, conflict.”

After a career in public education, spanning the roles of teacher, principal, university professor, and superintendent, Allen pursued an MFA degree in Writing for Children at Vermont College, a degree she received in 2009.

She taught a course titled Writing for Children in the Tulane College of Continuing Education. Her young reader fictional biography on Leah Chase titled  A Long Way From the Strawberry Patch; The Story of Leah Chase,  is scheduled for release in spring 2020 from Pelican Publishing Company

Allen’s other books are:   Plain Weird, and Other Weird and Wacky Poems , Dilettante Press, 1989;  They Only Laughed Later: Tales of Women on the Move , EuroPublic Press, 2000; and  Leah Chase: Listen, I Say Like This , Pelican Publishing Company, 2002. She has published numerous freelance articles including a profile of Ernest Gaines, published in  The Writers’ Chronicle , and articles in  The Washington Post Epicurean Magazine , and others.

A collaboration between the Hermann-Grima Gallier Historic Houses and Goat in the Road Productions, The Uninvited is set in 1874 and follows nine characters who live in, or orbit around, the Gallier House (1132 Royal St.). It is six years after architect James Gallier Jr.’s death, and his wife, two of his daughters, and their servants are preparing for an evening of entertaining when a mob of young men passes by, seeking to re-segregate the integrated school next door. News of the mob and an uninvited guest disrupt the household and have different implications for those who inhabit the house. This event is based on a real life incident that took place in December, 1874.
Schedule:
Thursdays - Saturdays, Jan. 30 - Feb. 1
Wednesdays - Fridays, Feb. 5 - Feb. 14
Two shows per night: 6 pm and 8 pm

The event is based on a real-life incident that took place in New Orleans in December of 1874.The Uninvited is the second historical, immersive performance created by Goat in the Road Productions. The Stranger Disease, which premiered in March 2018, was a collaboration with the Louisiana State Museum and Friends of the Cabildo. REGIONAL PREMIERE!

Poet-Playwright Ntozake Shange ( For Colored Girls ) adapted Bertolt Brecht’s classic drama in 1980, transposing the action from Europe during the Thirty Years War to the American Southwest after the Civil War. Mother Courage struggles to survive the war by profiting from it, but ends up paying the ultimate cost.

The play, which earned Shange an Obie Award, has never been published or performed since its premiere at the Public Theater in 1980. Now pulled from the archives at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library for this production, Shange’s adaptation puts a uniquely American spin on Brecht’s classic drama that forces us to ask how, in the darkest of times, do we survive with our humanity intact?

Featuring the Southern Rep Theatre Acting Company, the cast of MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN will include Sarah Nanusubuga as Mother Courage, Ily Bernabel, Leland Ensminger, Joe Fredo, Rahim Glaspy, LaKesha Glover, Mack Guillory, Rodney Graham, Donald Lewis, Mona Naswari, Josef Pons, Elexis Selmon, Olivia Ros, and Lawrence Weber.

You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Jan 19, 2020 - Feb 02, 2020
Playmakers Theater, Covington, LA

Don't tell us you've forgotten that our winter musical, You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, opens ! Well, grab your goggles and strap in to the roof of your dog house, because tonight is opening night!

Charles Schulz’s beloved comic comes to life in Clark Gesner’s classic musical, and the whole gang is here! Bossy Lucy is hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder who doesn’t give her the time of day. Perfectionist Sally is still mocking blanket-toting Linus. Snoopy is in the doghouse, and “blockhead,” himself, Charlie Brown, is in rare form.

Philosophy Event!

Anne Gillis Discusses the Philosophy of Ease

METAIRIE, LA – Anne Gillis, the foremost expert on the concept of ease, will speak at the monthly meeting of the Theosophy and Self-Transformation Discussion Group, at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.

Gillis is the founder of EZosophy, a philosophy examines the suffering that glues together western culture. Unfortunately, the operating system that holds ego driven struggle in place is like Elmer's glue.

“EZosophy steers us away from ego into the ease of life,” she says. “Ease is a non-efforting approach to living. Ease is not indolence or laziness. Ease removes the struggle; ease associates with living in the flow of life. Until we assimilate the ease of our being, we create struggle in all areas of our lives.”

Gillis says that she achieved her material goals by the age of 24 and found herself living the empty life of the American Dream. In 1984, she cofounded Connection Church (Center for Spiritual Growth) in Memphis, and served as the senior spiritual guide until 1998, before moving to Houston.

She says her humor and frivolity set her aside from many teachers. She believes she is sincere, but not serious. Gillis contends that life is not as hard as we make it; it is time to lighten up and enjoy life. “Our work and lives are an expression of love, not a chance to punish ourselves with relentless doing.”
