NATIONAL PLAN FOR VACATION DAY
National Plan for Vacation Day, on the last Tuesday in January, reminds us to plan our vacation at the start of the year for the rest of the year. The early bird gets to pack their bags and fly away to a little fun and relaxation!
With the frigid temperatures and growing snow piles, it’s easy to start daydreaming of sunny skies. Who else is dreaming of sandcastles and the vacation days to come? But, for many Americans, those vacation dreams turn out to be just that: a dream.
Each year, Americans leave more than 600 million vacation days unused. Our work martyr attitudes combined with a culture of silence in the workplace is keeping workers at their desks instead of using their time off.
To change this, National Plan for Vacation Day reminds us to plan our vacation at the start of the year for the rest of the year. When it comes to taking a vacation, it is the planners of the world who get the job done. Planners are more likely to take all their vacation time in a given work year and take more extended vacations than non-planners. They are also happier with their jobs, relationships, and health. So don't knock the planners who get out the door to vacation! Get planning!!

Homecoming: Branford Marsalis to become artistic director at New Orleans center named for his father
“I hope to make my dad proud,” Branford Marsalis said.
Credit: AP/Sophia Germer
FILE - Branford Marsalis walks onto the stage during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans, April 28, 2019.
NEW ORLEANS — Branford Marsalis, the jazz saxophonist and composer whose career includes movie scores, Grammy-winning recordings and a stint as the leader of The Tonight Show band, is taking on a new job in his hometown of New Orleans.
Marsalis was to be named Tuesday as the new artistic director for the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music. The center is named for Branford's late father, patriarch of a family of accomplished New Orleans musicians that also includes trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Wynton and Branford Marsalis are brothers.
The Ellis Marsalis Center for Music provides music and cultural education programs for young people and adults. It is part of the Musicians’ Village, a housing development built in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity.
Branford Marsalis and fellow New Orleans musician Harry Connick Jr. spearheaded its development to provide housing for New Orleans musicians who lost their homes after levee failures during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 led to catastrophic flooding.
The elder Marsalis died in 2020, a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic. A pianist who performed regularly in New Orleans and an educator at the University of New Orleans, he was the center's artistic director when it opened in 2012.
In a statement released ahead of Tuesday's official announcement, Branford Marsalis described his father as “a teacher in music and in life” and said he was honored to fill the role his father held.
"My dad was a teacher, in music and in life,” Branford Marsalis said. “After Hurricane Katrina, he envisioned a haven for the underserved musicians and children in his hometown of New Orleans. He spent the last decade of his life committed to turning that dream into a reality at the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music. It is my honor to step into the role of Artistic Director at the Center and to continue to drive its mission. I hope to make my dad proud."

LSU Track & Field
The LSU record book was rewritten six times on Saturday, including Brianna Lyston's No. 4 time in collegiate history.
The LSU track and field wrapped up a record-setting finale of the Razorback Invitational, hosted by Arkansas on Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Final Results
Sophomore Brianna Lyston started a historic day off with the fastest qualifying time in the 60-meter preliminaries, coming in at 7.14 seconds in her 60m debut. Her prelims time came in at No. 5 on the all-time LSU performance list, tying Kortnei Johnson who reached the mark for LSU in 2019. This time already shaved .15 off of her previous best from 2023.
The Jamaican came back for more as she shocked the arena with a time of 7.07 seconds in the final. Her time of 7.07 equals the LSU record set in 2018 by American-record holder and alumni Aleia Hobbs. Lyston’s new PR is now the collegiate lead, No. 3 time in the world, and No. 4 on the all-time collegiate-performance list.
A couple of minutes later, Aleia Hobbs made her way down the track with a No. 2 time in the world of 7.05 seconds to win the 60-meter open final.
Another LSU record was reached along with Lyston’s as Lorena Rangel-Batres stormed through to a time of 4:37.84 in the women’s mile. She had previously held the No. 3 spot in the LSU record book with a time of 4:40.66, before shaving close to three seconds off of that time today. Alongside Rangel replacing her No. 3 time in the LSU record book was Bowerman Watch List member Michaela Rose. A week removed from setting the 600-yard collegiate record at the Corky Classic, Rose followed it up with a time of 4:38.64 to shave 11 seconds off her previous best.
The distance team was not finished for the afternoon as sophomore Ella Chesnut took on the 3000 meter later in the day. Chesnut, with inspiration from multiple other Tigers rewriting the record book earlier in the day, crossed the finish line with a time of 9:23.97. Her time puts her at No. 3 on the all-time LSU performance list and shaved well over 30 seconds off her previous best of 9:56.19. Her No. 3 time in LSU history leaves her just four seconds off of the 9:19.11 record set in 1987 by Lisa Reed.
Going from one sophomore named Ella to another, Ella Onojuvwevwo moved up a couple spots on the LSU indoor list as she stormed out to a heat-winning time of 52.53. Her new indoor PR sits at No. 7 on the all-time LSU list, moving her up two spots from No. 9 where her previous PR of 52.72 sat.
The sixth top-10 performance of the day for the Tigers came from Jahiem Stern in his LSU debut. Stern stormed out to a 60-meter hurdle final time of 7.74 seconds, putting him at No. 9 on the all-time indoor list for LSU. The Hampton transfer from Jamaica qualified for the final earlier in the day after finishing top five in the prelims with a time of 7.84 seconds.
In the women’s 60-meter hurdles the “Rhinestone Queen”, Alia Armstrong, continued her nation-wide dominance after claiming a win for the third week in-a-row. The New Orleans native started the day clocking a prelim-leading time of 8.06 seconds. She later followed it up with yet another sub-eight second performance, clocking a time of 7.97 seconds in the final to take gold. Leah Phillips was right behind her once again, finishing second with a time of 8.10 seconds.
Both the women’s and men’s 4×400-meter relay teams found themselves finishing with top-10 times in the nation to close out the Razorback Invitational.
The women’s team which consisted of Onojuvwevwo, Rose, Shani’a Bellamy, and Garriel White made their way to a 3:31.26 to win their heat in electric fashion. White helped LSU comeback from behind as she recorded and anchor time of 52.35, the fastest split of the four Tigers. This came not so long after White recorded a new PR in the 400m of 53.16 seconds earlier in the afternoon. Their season-best time in the 4×400 ranks sixth in the nation.
The men’s team consisting of Dillon Bedell-Bass, Sean Burrell, Salim Epps, and Shakeem McKay closed out the night with a dominating performance in their heat. The team recorded a time of 3:02.77, giving them the No. 8 time in the nation. Burrell led the Tigers with a split of 45.64 seconds on the second leg.
Additional Personal Bests
Ambria Langley threw a PR of 44’ 0.75” in the shot put.
Garriel White ran a PR of 53.16 in the 400m.
Shani’a Bellamy ran a PR of 53.89 in the 400m.
Jordyn Grady ran a PR of 55.13 in the 400m.
Praise Djoma jumped a PR of 38’ 9.5” in the triple jump.
Montana Monk ran a PR of 2:06.12 in the 800m.
Mats Swanson ran a PR of 1:52.70 in the 800m.

LSU will head west for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, hosted at the Albuquerque Convention Center February 2-3.

What does "affable" mean?

affable /ˈæfəbəl/
Definition: Easy to approach or talk to; friendly; pleasantly sociable.
Origin: The word "affable" comes from the Latin word "affābilis," meaning "approachable" or "friendly."

NATIONAL CROISSANT DAY
In the United States, National Croissant Day recognizes a flaky pastry enjoyed at every meal. Croissants are buttery, crescent-shaped rolls that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
The key to a perfect croissant is laminating the dough. You laminate the dough by folding butter into the mixture creating multiple thin layers of butter and dough. The result is a mouth-watering flaky crust and airy body.
Legend surrounds this pastry, as is often the case with a popular, worldly treat. What is known, is that crescent-shaped breads have been found around the world for ages. One of these was the Kipferl which originated in Austria as far back as the 13th century. This nonlaminated bread is more like a roll.
Credit for the croissant we know today is given to an Austrian military officer, August Zang. In 1839 he opened a Viennese bakery in Paris introducing France to Viennese baking techniques.

⚜️Louisiana Memories
Did you ever go to the Bali Ha'i at the Beach in New Orleans?
The restaurant at the Pontchartrain Beach amusement park on the south shore of the lake opened in 1958, capturing the national craze for tiki that has lasted decades. The tropically decorated destination became the spot for first dates, pre-prom meals and anniversaries. The name was taken from a song from the musical "South Pacific." The powerful, often umbrella-adorned drinks had exotic names, like the Bali-Bali or the Flaming Zorro. The restaurant closed in the late 1980s. In October 1988, an ad was placed in the Times-Picayune for an auction to sell off everything from the Bali Ha'i, "from souvenirs to chairs."

1965: West End Restaurants
A 1965 photograph of Papa Rosselli's and Bruning's at West End. Being the only Italian restaurant surrounded by seafood places made Papa Rosselli's different, but it was also the only one of these restaurants that was on dry land -- everyone else was on pilings over the water. Although I can only recall their Italian food -- stuffed artichokes and seafood pasta come to mind -- I am told that their seafood menu was impressive as well.
It wasn't the onslaught of hurricanes that caused Papa Rosselli's to disappear, but rather the introduction of parking fees for the lot across the street in the early 1990s that ruined things for everyone.

City of New Orleans Reminds Jackson Square Artists of Permit Deadline
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans issued a reminder to all current permit holders to renew their permits for selling art on Jackson Square in the French Quarter. The deadline for all current permit holders to renew is Wednesday, Jan. 31.
Artists who sell art on or around Jackson Square are required to obtain an Occupational License and Mayoralty Permit from the Department of Finance’s Bureau of Revenue. Eligible permits are either Artist A permits to sell art on Jackson Square or Artist B permits to sell art only in Pirates Alley.
All permit holders who wish to renew must apply in person during business hours (Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in the Bureau of Revenue office located at City Hall (1300 Perdido St., Room 1W15). Artists must also present a valid photo ID and be prepared to pay $175.25 in the form of a certified check or money order payable to the City of New Orleans. For applicants over the age of 65, the fee is $25.25.
All permit holders who fail to renew their existing permit on or before Jan. 31 will be required to re-apply as a new applicant. A maximum of 200 Artist A permits may be issued, according to City code. There is no limit for Artist B permits.
Once all renewals have been completed, the remaining Artist A permit slots will be included in a lottery.
Similar to the permit renewal process, applicants must be present during the lottery, possess a valid photo ID and be prepared to pay $175.25 in the form of a certified check or money order payable to the City of New Orleans. For applicants over the age of 65, the fee is $25.25.
Qualified applicants are defined as persons who either have a current Artist B permit or have an application for a new Artist A permit currently on file. Artist B permit holders who seek to upgrade to an Artist A permit must also present their current Artist B permit.
For more information, contact the Bureau of Revenue Application Unit via phone at (504) 658-1630, (504) 658-1621 or (504) 658-694 or email Todd M. Ecker at tmecker@nola.gov.

Drew Brees-owned Smalls Sliders to open Metairie location in February
CityBusiness Staff Reports
Drew Brees has a busy next two weeks. This week, Brees will reign as king of Washington Mardi Gras in D.C. Next week, his Smalls Sliders Metairie location will open on Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Clearview City Center at 4580 Veterans Blvd.
The grand opening will be celebrated with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce at 10 a.m on Feb. 1. This is the first Smalls Sliders location for the former New Orleans Saints quarterback and Super Bowl MVP. Brees owns the Metairie location, along with former Purdue football teammates Jason Loezel and Ben Smith.
The three originally announced the partnership in May 2022.
“Drew has been an integral part of Smalls Sliders since its inception, and we are thrilled to celebrate his first Can opening,” said Maria Rivera, CEO of Smalls Sliders. “His passion and commitment to our vision and values have been a driving force of our growth and brand culture, and we are proud to partner with him in Metairie and beyond.”
The Smalls Sliders chain, which serves cheeseburger sliders and waffle fries through drive-thru and walk-up options, will open 40 restaurants in 2024 across the Southeast. Smalls Sliders opened its first signature ‘Smorange’ colored Can in 2019. Smalls Sliders has more than 160 Cans open or under development.
“We’ve seen the excitement surrounding the Smalls brand, and it has only heightened around our grand opening,” said Melissa Kernaghan, director of operations at Boilermaker Ventures and local operator of the Smalls Sliders in Metairie. “Smalls has become a staple within Louisiana communities, and people truly feel connected to the brand. We aim to continue building upon the Smalls fanbase within Metairie and look forward to becoming an integral part of people’s lives.”
Small Sliders joins the many business ventures that Brees has become involved in since he retired following the 2020 NFL season. In January 2024, Brees opened Surge Entertainment in Baton Rouge. He also owns Stretch Zone, multiple Jimmy John’s and Dunkin’ franchises and has invested in food delivery service Waitr, Walk-On’s and craft superfood chain everbowl™, among others. Brees also spent one season as an analyst for NBC Sunday Night Football following his NFL retirement.

Family Gras to feature Cheap Trick, Oak Ridge Boys, Amy Grant
By WWL.com
It's classic rock and country music at the 2024 Family Gras in Metairie.
The 16th edition of the weekend festival will take place February 2-4, the "first parade weekend," as it's commonly known.
The festival begins Friday with Cajun fiddle player Amanda Shaw. Zebra, the New Orleans-born rock band, will also play Friday.
Grammy Award-winning artist Amy Grant headlines Saturday, featuring music from her three multi-platinum albums, six platinum albums and four gold albums including her six number one hits.
Classic rockers Cheap Trick will lead into Grant's set. Local artists Mad City and the Creole String Beans are also part of Saturday's lineup.
Family Gras closes out Sunday with Revisiting Credence, featuring Dan McGuinness and Kurt Griffey of Creedence Clearwater Revisited.
The Oak Ridge Boys, on their farewell tour, will perform. So will Tyler Hubbard, formerly of the country duo Florida-Georgia Line.
The event is free to the public, and takes place at Metairie's Mardi Gras Plaza, 3300 Veterans Memorial Blvd. across from Lakeside Shopping Center.

UNEASY LIES THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN, BUT WHICH ONE WILL WEAR IT?
England’s King Henry II and his Queen Elinor of Aquitaine had four sons, the eldest died, leaving the other three to squabble over who came next. Unfortunately, Henry and Elinor disagreed over which one should take the crown next.
That’s the arc of The Lion in Winter, Playmakers Theater’s next production. Directed by Chase Hefte, the production chronicles the royal gathering at Christmas 1183 as the family meets to hash out the succession. It does not go well leaving Elinor to comment, “What family doesn’t have its ups and downs?”
The Lion in Winter crackles with brilliant scenes between the royals as they plot and scheme and form alliances to promote their choice for king.
The production opens Saturday, Jan. 20 and runs through Sunday, February 4. Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available through www.BonTempsTix.com.

Chiefs vs. Niners
The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl LVIII after both teams won their respective conference championship games yesterday.
The Chiefs will be making their fourth trip to the title game in five years after beating the Baltimore Ravens on the road, 17-10. Tight end Travis Kelce caught all 11 passes thrown his way, including a touchdown, en route to breaking Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice's record for all-time playoff receptions (151). The game turned on a pair of endzone turnovers by the Ravens in the fourth quarter.
San Francisco topped the Detroit Lions 34-31 at home, holding the Lions to seven points in the second half and overcoming a 24-7 halftime deficit to reach their first championship since 2019. Star running back Christian McCaffrey ran for 90 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.
Super Bowl LVII takes place Sunday, Feb. 11 (6:30 pm ET, CBS), in Las Vegas, with R&B star Usher headlining the halftime show.

For instance, almost every month’s Full Moon boasts a name sourced from Native American, Colonial American, or other North American traditions, with their titles mirroring seasonal shifts and nature’s events.
Wolf Moon (January): Inspired by the cries of hungry wolves.
Snow Moon (February): A nod to the month’s often heavy snowfall.
Worm Moon (March): Named after the earthworms that signal thawing grounds.
Pink Moon (April): In honor of the blossoming pink wildflowers.
Related: How to see the eclipse in April
Flower Moon (May): Celebrating the bloom of flowers.
Strawberry Moon (June): Marks the prime strawberry harvest season.
Buck Moon (July): Recognizing the new antlers on bucks.
Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.
Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.
Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.
Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.
Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.
In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.
Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.
Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.
Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
