In 2021 our annual Appetite for Art fundraising dinner goes on tour!
Beginning in January, Upturn Arts is partnering with 12 local restaurants to create a monthly, one-of-a-kind dining experience for our supporters. Each month a different partnering restaurant will offer a unique Appetite for Art menu available for socially distanced dining in or a take out option to enjoy at home. As with Appetite for Art events in the past, each experience is complete with art and centerpieces from our young artists, and one lucky diner will get to be the honorary emcee for the evening!
Join us for one evening throughout the year or one evening a month at a different participating restaurant. All proceeds from these small, ticketed events will support both the partnering restaurants and our creARTive grants program to ensure both in-person and virtual summer camp in 2021
To schedule your dinner:

2. Call the restaurant to place your to-go order*. Make sure you mention Appetite for Art when you call!
3. Get Turned UP for Upturn at your dinner!
* Additional items can be purchased and paid for at pickup. Orders may be placed and scheduled for a later date and time. Pizza for 10 must be arranged at least 24 hours in advance.

Drink & Learn: Carnival Traditions
The Sazerac House

Few visitors realize that Carnival is not merely a day or a weekend, but a season, stretching from January 6th (Twelfth Night) until Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent begins. New Orleanians celebrate throughout the season, hosting friends to watch parades, making costumes, and attending balls. All of these festivities are usually accompanied by drinks, some complicated, some simple, but all tied to the spirit of Carnival. Join us to learn how New Orleanians have been drinking during Carnival for the past 300 years.
Hosted by Elizabeth Pearce and Sazerac House Bar Expert.
All guests must be 21 to participate. Approximately 90 minutes.
$30 per person.

Based on a true story, the newest feat of historical fiction from the New York Times bestselling author of I Was Anastasia tells the thrilling story of socialite spy Nancy Wake, one of the most decorated women in WWII.
In 1936 Nancy Wake is an intrepid Australian expat living in Paris who has bluffed her way into a reporting job for Hearst newspapers when she meets the wealthy French industrialist Henri Fiocca. No sooner does Henri sweep Nancy off her feet and convince her to become Mrs. Fiocca than the Germans invade France and she takes yet another name: a code name.
Told in interweaving timelines organized around the four code names Nancy used during the war, Code Name Hélène follows Nancy’s transformation from journalist into one of the most powerful leaders in the French Resistance, known for her ferocious wit, her signature red lipstick, and her ability to summon weapons straight from the Allied Forces. But with power comes notoriety, and no matter how careful Nancy is to protect her identity, the risk of exposure is great—for herself and for those she loves.
Code Name Hélène is a spellbinding and moving story of enduring love, remarkable sacrifice, and unfaltering resolve that chronicles the true exploits of a woman who deserves to be a household name.

From Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the wine of popes and kings, to the easy-drinking bottlings of Côtes du Rhône adored worldwide, the hedonistic wines of the Southern Rhône are familiar friends. As a whole, they share a lusciousness of fruit, enticing spice and earthy characteristics with the most dynamic generally hailing from the region’s mighty crus. A cru, which translates to “growth” in French, designates a legally demarcated region that’s recognized for its quality and distinctive terroir. Cru wines, labeled solely by their appellation such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Lirac, Tavel, Rasteau, are the elite; they’re positioned above wider regional classifications like Côtes du Rhône or Côtes du Rhône Villages. This designation proves both a reward and challenge to winegrowers - it imposes strict yield limits and mandates laborious quality measures.

But besides all of those well known Crus, the Rhone has some smaller appellations and production styles that are a bit off the radar. Did you know there is a sparkling wine appellation in the Rhone? And while white Rhones are a rarity (only 5% of all wine produced) they offer the same richness of fruit as the reds and are perfect for those who enjoy fuller bodied white wines. Then there is the tiniest appellation in the Rhone for red wines, Beaume des Venise - only 27 hectares so as you can imagine, the wines are hard to find.

So besides having a great supply of the well know wines from the region, check out our unsung heroes! Same approachability, same deliciousness just more rare and smaller quantities...

Domaine Achard-Vincent Clairette de Die Legend says that the process to make the sparkling wines of the little known region of Clairette de Die was found accidentally by a Gallo-Roman shepherd. He was using the cool waters of La Drôme river to chill a jar of local wine. The jar was forgotten and left in the cold water over the winter. Upon finding it in the spring, it was found to be carbonated, or pétillant, which roughly translates into English as “sparkling”. Following the original discovery, Gallic tribes left jars of the wine in rivers over the winter and then recovered them in the spring. Among the most well-known of Clairette de Die’s producers today is the tiny Domaine Achard-Vincent. Jean-Pierre Achard, and his son, Thomas, descend from five generations of growers. The domaine has farmed organically since Thomas’s grandparents were directing it, although it is now officially certified as both organic (since 1982) and biodynamic (since 2007). They only produce the traditional sparkling wines of the region and this brut bottling is a dry wine made exclusively from Clairette, crafted by the méthode traditionnelle that is also used in Champagne.

Domaine de Durban Beaumes-de-Venise Rouge - When you walk through the high-altitude vineyards at Domaine de Durban a handful of the soil reveals shards of ancient Roman roof tiles and medieval pots - wine has been a part of the culture here for millennia. Jacques Leydier bought the property in the 1960s when the farm had fallen into disrepair. Today, Henri and Philippe Leydier run the domaine and this magical spot has assumed a higher purpose, producing some of the most memorable wines of the Southern Rhône. The blend is 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre made from sustainably farmed 50 year old vines, hand harvested, native yeasts and bottled unfiltered, unfined - it is a gorgeous, velvety expression of a Rhone Valley red.

Domaine de Saint-Cosme “Les Deux Albion” Blanc Château de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the benchmark wines of the appellation. Wine has been produced on the site of Saint Cosme since Roman times, evident by the ancient Gallo-Roman vats carved into the limestone below the château. The property has been in the hands of the Barruol family since 1490. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992 making a dramatic shift to quality and converting to biodynamics in 2010. This white is a new project for the winery with its first vintage being 2016. The grapes come from 10-hectares near Violès, directly across the Ouvèze River from Gigondas where there is a high level of limestone. It is a blend of the predominant varieties of the region - Viognier, Picpoul, Marsanne, Clairette and Ugni Blanc and shows the salty minerality typical of limestone terroir with notes of dried apricots and white flowers.

NATIONAL PIZZA DAY
National Pizza Day on February 9th celebrates one of America’s all-time favorite foods. Whether it is thin crust, Chicago-style, deep dish, or anything in between, pizza is an American favorite.
We love our pizzas, and they come in so many varieties, too. As we nosh on our favorite, explore a few pizza facts:
  • Pepperoni is the most popular pizza at 36% of all pies ordered.
  • Over 3 billion pizzas are sold in the USA each year. Add another 1 billion on frozen pizzas
  • In the United States, 17% of all restaurants are pizzerias.
  •  Antica Pizzeria, the first Pizzeria, opened in Naples, Italy, in 1738.
  •  Gennaro Lombardi, the first Pizzeria in the United States, opened in 1895 in New York City.
  • Americans consume on average 23 pounds of pizza per person each year.

NATIONAL BAGEL AND LOX DAY DAY
National Bagel and Lox Day recognizes one of America’s favorite bagel combinations on February 9th.
Bagels are one of the few breads that are boiled then baked. This creates a soft inside while keeping a crisp outside. Bagels originated in Poland in the early 17th century and now sell over a billion dollars worth each year in the United States.
Salmon is cured in a salt brine for several months to make lox. The technique was perfected in Scandinavia. Using the fatty belly of the salmon results in a buttery, silky texture that pairs well with cream cheese and bagels.
Over the years, many flavors and varieties of bagels have sprung up across the USA. Cream cheese is a favorite topping on bagels.

Tulane University first fielded a varsity football team in 1893 and the sport slowly caught on. By 1905 they were part of the Southern Intercollegiate Attic Conference (1899 – 1920), followed by the Southern Conference (1922 – 1932), and finally the Southeastern Athletic Conference (1932 – 1966). On November 25, 1905, they faced off against rival LSU in the Battle for the Rag as they had every season since 1893. The winner took home a satin trophy flag known as the Tiger Rag at LSU and the Victory Flag at Tulane.

Tulane coach John Tobin’s squad would play just a single game that season. On the rain-soaked field at Athletic Park in New Orleans, 4,000 fans watched as the Olive and Blue fell to the Tigers 5 – 0. Photographer Alexander Allison captured the action.

LSU finished the season with an overall record of 3 – 0, 2 – 0 in conference play behind Vanderbilt (7 – 1, 5 – 0) and Georgia Tech ( 6 – 0 – 1, 5 – 0 – 1). The shortened season was due to the lingering effects of the final Yellow Fever outbreak that summer. The teams had just three weeks to prepare to take the field
St. John the Baptist Parish was established in 1851. The present church building was dedicated in 1872, designed by architect, Albert Diettel and built by Irish contractor, Thomas Mulligan. Its location on Dryades Street (now Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard) between Clio and Calliope Streets was to serve the growing Irish population in the surrounding neighborhood. The imposing scale of the church measures 172-feet by 75-feet.
Most people recognize the church from its distinctive gold dome, but perhaps the most prominent feature is inside the church where its stained glass windows provide a visual feast, a testament to 19th century German craftsmanship. The Renaissance style continues inside the church, its arched ceiling rising 55-feet above the floor, supported by massive, graceful columns. The altars are pure white Italian marble accented with green and gold Irish marble.
In 1860, a group of Dominican nuns from Cabra, Ireland, came to New Orleans to establish a school for girls which they soon opened to boys “of a manageable age” as well. The parish school and convent which were located next to the church were demolished during the construction of the Pontchartrain Expressway in 1956. The church was also slated to be torn down, but pastor Fr. Arthur Screen spearheaded the effort to save the historic church building. Although the church remains closed for much of the time, they do offer two masses – 4:00pm on Saturday and 9:15amon Sunday – and is available to rent for weddings.

Millions of people around the world will ring in the Lunar New Year on Friday, February 12th, coinciding with the first new moon of the lunar calendar. While commonly referred to as “Chinese New Year,” many East Asian and Southeast Asian countries outside Mainland China also celebrate the Lunar New Year, including Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Bhutan, Mongolia, and the Philippines.
Each country has its own unique traditions and customs, but common to all celebrations are coming together with family and friends, gift-giving, and preparing and eating traditional foods.
The Year of the Ox
On February 12th, we say goodbye to the Year of the Rat and usher in the Year of the Ox, the second animal of the Chinese Zodiac. The Ox is an esteemed animal in Chinese culture and is said to represent hard work, positivity, and honesty.
Dragon dances, mooncakes, parades, fireworks, red envelopes... most of us are familiar with many of the traditions associated with Chinese New Year celebrations. Lunar New Year is a very big deal in China. Schools and businesses are closed for a whole week and millions of people travel to their hometowns to spend the holiday with family in what is often referred to as "the world's largest human migration." Red is considered a lucky color in Chinese culture, so you will see it in abundance during Lunar New Year festivities.
Speaking of red, those red envelopes, known as hong bao, contain money that is given by elders to children. While the traditional foods prepared and eaten during Lunar New Year vary somewhat by region, jiaozi (dumplings), nian goa (rice cakes), and mandarin oranges are considered lucky foods.

YARDI GRAS
CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE

The Yard on Frenchmen presents:
YARDI GRAS 2021, the ultimate CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE!

This year Carnival may look a little different. That is why we pioneered a wild 5 day affair, introducing traditional and re-imagined parade route culture to our guests at The Yard.

Beginning with an immersive restaurant atmosphere, the Courtyard and interior dining room will seamlessly transition into an explosion of Yardi Gras throws and wild booty-popping presentations, including an array of characters that aren't your usual suspects. Guests let loose and party the weekend away.

This signature event features a daily CRAWFISH BOIL, indulgent food menu, Yardi Gras drink specials, a variety of special guests and "parade route" inspired surprises, with music to keep the party going from open to close.

DJ Vladimir will be on the decks each day keeping the Yardi Gras vibe alive with Partygoers dancing in their seats and out in the street.
Each night the ACE Brass band, featuring a full (St. Augustine inspired) drum line will be playing in the courtyard. You may not see a single parade this year, but you won't miss the experience if you go to the Yardi Gras!

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
