Ochsner Health has announced a drive-thru mass vaccination event in Jefferson Parish at the Shrine on Airline (6000 Airline Drive, Metairie, La.) on Wednesday, March 3.

Approximately 1,000 new appointments are available now on MyOchsner or by calling 844-888-2772.

Ochsner, Louisiana’s largest hospital system, said Monday it has provided almost 19% of the shots given in Louisiana across its hospitals and clinics. If the system receives notice of shipment of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine by Tuesday with delivery on Wednesday, they could give it out as soon as Thursday, according to Dawn Pevey, the system vice president of service lines.
Ochsner has not yet received word of its allocation of the new vaccine but has the capacity to administer up to 75,000 vaccines per week. That’s more than seven times its current allocation.

Nearly 98,000 doses of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are expected to arrive this week, State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter said Thursday.

Another 37,000 to 38,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine could also be headed to Louisiana this week.

In order to receive the vaccine, a person must make an appointment with the provider.
A person who arrives to a location without an appointment will not be given a vaccine.
The vaccines are available to 1.6 million Louisiana residents based on the following criteria, which expanded last week:
  • Persons 65 and older
  • Dialysis providers and patients
  • Ambulatory and outpatient providers and staff
  • Behavioral health providers and staff
  • Urgent care clinic providers and staff
  • Community care providers and staff
  • Dental providers and staff
  • Non-emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) providers and staff
  • Professional home care providers (including hospice workers) and home care recipients (including older and younger people with disabilities over the age of 16 who receive community or home-based care, as well as clients of home health agencies)
  • Interpreters and Support Service Providers (SSPs) working in community and clinic-based settings, and clients who are both deaf and blind
  • Health-related support personnel (lab staff, mortuary staff who have contact with corpses, pharmacy staff)
  • Schools of allied health students, residents and staff
  • State and local essential COVID emergency response personnel
  • Some elections staff of March and April elections
  • Teachers and any other support staff working on site in K-12 or daycare
  • All pregnant persons
  • Individuals ages 55-64 with at least one of the conditions listed by the CDC as placing them at an "increased risk of severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19." Persons with the following qualifying underlying medical conditions are advised to complete the Louisiana COVID-19 Vaccine Attestation Form to receive the vaccine (providers should have available if individuals are not able to print and complete in advance):
  • Cancer
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Down syndrome
  • Heart conditions including but not limited to heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies
  • Immunocompromised state (weakened immune system) from solid organ transplant
  • Obesity (body mass index [BMI] of 30kg/m2 or higher but less than 40kg/m2)
  • Severe obesity (BMI greater than 40kg/m2)
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Smoking
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus

Critically Endangered Sumatran Orangutan
Born at Audubon Zoo
animal care staff at Audubon Zoo welcomed the arrival of a critically endangered Sumatran orangutan infant. Although early signs and physical changes pointed to an anticipated birth window between April and May, those signs appeared later than normal and the birth happened earlier than expected.

Mother and the infant appear to be doing well and are behind-the-scenes to give them time to bond and to allow the Zoo's veterinary and primate team to care for them. Staff are monitoring the infant's health closely for any signs of weakness or dehydration. The next 48 hours are critical as the newborn learns to nurse.

"We received the best kind of surprise this morning," said Audubon Zoo's Curator of Primates Liz Wilson. "It just goes to show that, despite all of the uncertainty in the world currently, life is carrying on as normal for our orangutans. It's really uplifting to see."

Though Reese is a first-time mother, she saw her mother giving birth and raising her brother during her time at Albuquerque BioPark Zoo in New Mexico, her first home. Reese also witnessed Feliz, Audubon Zoo's orangutan matriarch, give birth to Bulan in 2019. Reese and Bulan have a special bond, and are often spotted eating, sleeping, or foraging together in their habitat. This experience with infants has helped to prepare Reese to become a mother.

Reese's care staff and the Zoo veterinary team have worked diligently through daily training and enrichment sessions to prepare the young orangutan for motherhood. With any first pregnancy, there is the possibility of issues with lactation, basic mothering skills, and dynamics within the orangutan group post-birth. So, as is standard procedure with all primate mothers, Reese's care staff has worked with her to ensure that she will be comfortable with the possibility of staff assisting her with feeding or caring for the infant if necessary.

"Thus far, Reese is showing very positive signs of her maternal instincts kicking in," said Audubon's Senior Veterinarian Bob MacLean. "She is holding the infant close and tending to it well. We are continuing to monitor for signs of nursing and lactation."

Jambi, the Zoo's male orangutan, has sired Feliz's infant Bulan in 2019 and now Reese's infant since arriving from Hannover Zoo in Germany in 2018. With Jambi's move from Germany to the U.S. and into the Sumatran orangutan population within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, he has added critical genetic diversity of the species and is classified as one of the most genetically valuable males in North America.

Maintaining a genetically diverse population in human care is important because Sumatran orangutans have been assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as "critically endangered" and therefore threatened with extinction-there are fewer than 14,000 living in the wild and their numbers are declining, mainly due to human-wildlife contact due to the spread of palm oil plantations into their forest habitat.

Elizabeth Miki Brina
Tuesday, March 2,, 2021
7:00pm to 8:00pm CST
via Zoom
Join us virtually for a special Tuesday evening with New Orleans author Elizabeth Miki Brina featuring her debut book, SPEAK, OKINAWA, a searing, deeply candid memoir of a young woman's journey to understanding her complicated parents--her mother an Okinawan war bride, her father a Vietnam veteran--and her own, fraught cultural heritage. She will appear in conversation with Randy Bates, Prof. Emeritus at the UNO Creative Writing Workshop.

"In Speak, Okinawa, Elizabeth Miki Brina beautifully combs a lifetime of memory, love, loss, and the connections that bind us to one another. In exploring how one comes to be, Brina’s prose illuminates and dazzles—and we see, in the end, what was intangible made clear in her writing. Speak, Okinawa is indelible, and Brina’s words are unforgettable.”

Rocky & Carlo's is open five days a week.

Hours of operation:
Tuesday-Thursday: 11 a.m. till 8 p.m.
Friday-Saturday: 11 a.m. till 8:30 p.m.
For more information, including a full menu, be sure to check out their website.
Rocky & Carlos has been a staple for New Orleanians since they opened in 1965.
Tommy Tommaseo and his brother Rocky and his brothers-in-law Carlo, Mario, Guiseppe Gioe opened Rocky & Carlo’s with no idea that it would become the culinary landmark that it has today.

Their macaroni and cheese alone is enough of a reason to make the trek out to Chalmette.

Freshly made every day, you’ll fall in love after first bite. And this is one giant mountain of macaroni and cheese, easily enough for the table to share. On a cold winter day, nothing hits the spot quite like some good old fashioned macaroni and cheese.

WORD OF THE DAY
PRONUNCIATION:
 [ kuhl-puh-buhl ]
ORIGIN: Middle English; Latin
ETYMOLOGY: from Old French coupable, culpable, from Latin culpabilis, from culpare ‘to blame’, from culpa ‘fault, blame’
DEFINITION:
1. (adjective) deserving blame or censure; blameworthy
Synonym(s): guilty, impeachable, liable, reprehensible, responsible
Antonym(s): immune, irresponsible, blameless, innocent, not guilty
EXAMPLE: Brooke was just as culpable as her friend who shoplifted because they planned the act together.
NATIONAL OLD STUFF DAY
Always observed on March 2nd, National Old Stuff Day gives notice to all that old stuff and encourages you to try something new. Well, maybe not ALL the old stuff, but some of it. It’s a day to break out of the old routines and experience new ones.
We have all heard the saying, “same old, same old.” Well, this is the day to do things differently. There is no limit to how you can change up your day. Take a moment to recognize the things that you do each day. Is there a better, more efficient way? Examine the route you take to work. Evaluate how you fold laundry. Perhaps there’s an improved way of cleaning windows.
Maybe it’s just a way to brighten your day or someone else’s day. Whatever it is, strive to make the day new, not the same old day it was yesterday.
NATIONAL BANANA CREAM PIE DAY
The calendar loves pie days and National Banana Cream Pie Day is no exception! On March 2nd, be sure to get your slice of one of America’s all-time favorite creampies.
Remember, bananas are loaded with potassium!
The traditional custard pie was modified into a recipe that resulted in the appetizing and flavorful banana cream pie. Dating back to the 19th century, banana cream pie found its way into recipe books. Today, recipes fill cookbooks and flood the internet for this yummy pie. In the 1950s, soldiers of the United States Armed Services ranked the banana cream pie as one of their favorites.
Banana and cream complement so many other flavors that bakers enjoy experimenting in the kitchen. Both chocolate and peanut butter pair well with bananas. Many other ingredients do as well. It should come as no surprise when exploring recipes when you discover the sheer number and variety to choose from. It’s a testament to just how much the banana cream pie is enjoyed and loved.

The closeup photograph of one of the cornstalk fences in New Orleans on my Facebook profile occasioned a brief discussion about the iconic ironwork throughout the city.

The building at 915 Royal Street was once the home of Dr. Joseph Biamonti who purchased the property in 1834. Local legend has it that the doctor commissioned the distinctive cast iron cornstalk fence from Wood & Perot Forge in Philadelphia in 1857 along with local craftsmen from Wood and Miltenberger and Company as a present for his wife who was originally from Iowa. The photograph below shows the current coloration. Dr. Biamonti’s home is now the Cornstalk Fence Hotel but is only the first of several cornstalk fences throughout the city.

Next, we have Colonel Robert H. Short’s massive home at 1448 Fourth Street built in the Garden District in 1859 from a Henry Howard design. While the fencing carries the same cornstalk design as Royal Street as it was also fabricated by Wood and Miltenberger & Company, the fenceposts depict harvest scenes with flowers and beans with cornstalks on the fenceposts. This is perhaps the best known and most popular of the cornstalk fences, certainly the most photographed.

At 2408 Dauphine Street in the Marigny neighborhood just a few steps off of Mandeville Street there is a cornstalk fence in front of a modest double gallery Creole townhouse. This fence is currently painted in a monochromatic darker shade of green that the others and does not have the ornate fenceposts seen on Fourth Street or Royal Street.

The last cornstalk fence on our tour may be found at 1206 North White Street at the DuFour-Plassan House on the corner of Bell Street in the Bayou St. John neighborhood. Built in 1870, the house was relocated from its original location facing Esplanade Avenue in 1906. The original cornstalk fence is long gone but the gateposts and fenceposts remain and are quite different from the others, with blue morning glories and sunflowers in addition to the cornstalk pattern.

The six-week course will explore African traditions and influences on New Orleans culture and dance. To register visit the course’s event page .
Mardi Gras exhibit opens; virtual events planned
The Louisiana State Museum, working in collaboration with the renowned Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac in Paris, has announced the opening of a new exhibition, Mystery in Motion: African American Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras

In addition to a stunning exhibit in the Presbytere, there also are several virtual programs offered in connection with the program.

This new exhibition inside the Presbytère on Jackson Square examines the direct influence of multicultural spirituality within the carnival traditions of Black New Orleanians. Due to the pandemic, you will not find many Black masking Indians on the streets this carnival season, but you will see their elaborate suits and learn about their use and inspiration inside the museum’s galleries. The exhibit will be on display in time for the Mardi Gras weekend, from February 15, 2021, through November 28, 2021, and will serve as the centerpiece of the museum’s planned programming to celebrate the 2021 carnival season.
“Mystery in Motion is a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the vibrant carnival traditions of the Black community in New Orleans and it offers an excellent way to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during this current pandemic,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
Mystery in Motion guest curators Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., and Ron Bechet of Xavier University of Louisiana explore spirituality in Mardi Gras through the presentation of more than two dozen Black masking Indian suits, carnival costumes, and masking objects produced in New Orleans, juxtaposed with extraordinary African artifacts that are representative of the cultures, religions, and artistry that influenced their creation. These exceptional African objects will be on loan from the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac and Southern University at New Orleans.
“There is so much happening on Mardi Gras day, it is impossible to take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences. The intent of the exhibition is to offer an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual dimensions of African American Mardi Gras masking that are hidden in plain view,” said Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D.

Additionally, several virtual events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition that are free and open to the public:

Every Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on February 24 through March 31, teaching artist Ausettua AmorAmenkum will lead a dance course called African Dance in New Orleans: Online Course at the Louisiana State Museum [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com]. The six-week course will explore African traditions and influences on New Orleans culture and dance. To register visit the course’s event page [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com].

Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been a mainstay in the New Orleans music scene since the early 1960s. This new record confirms what fans have known for years: Walter “Wolfman Washington has soul to go along with that fire.

CITYWIDE FISH FRY BENEFITS HOSPITALITY WORKER RESOURCE PROGRAM
Local Restaurants Fry Up Fish On Fridays During Lent
3-5-21
NEW ORLEANS—As most New Orleanians know, Lent means Friday fish fries. While the pandemic has forced many churches across the area to alter or cancel this beloved tradition, 39 local restaurants will keep it alive this year with Fish Fry Fridays. The Fish Fry Fridays campaign will serve as a fundraising event to benefit Hospitality Cares, a partnership between Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and United Way of Southeast Louisiana (UWSELA). Participating restaurants will donate $1 per fish fry entrée sold each week.

“The pandemic has hit the hospitality sector the hardest,” said Michael Williamson, UWSELA President and CEO. “Our community always comes together to help those in need, and this campaign is no different. The restaurants themselves are stepping up to keep the industry alive while providing a safety net for its employees through Hospitality Cares.”

Hospitality Cares is a crisis grant program offering varying resources, including free civil legal aid, counseling and emergency financial assistance to individuals working in the hospitality industry – one of the region’s largest employment sectors. The emergency grants award up to $2,500 to eligible employees at hospitality businesses running active United Way workplace campaigns in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. The funds provide temporary assistance during times of crisis to cover basic financial needs, including housing, medical and utility bills.

The Fish Fry Fridays campaign was initially launched during Lent 2020 to help hospitality workers laid off during the pandemic. It raised over $12,000 from restaurant sales and a sponsorship from TABASCO®, who will sponsor the campaign again in 2021 and be joined by New Orleans Fish House who will offer discounts to participating restaurants for their seafood features.

“We are proud to participate in this campaign,” said Phil DeGruy, New Orleans Fish House sales manager. “It is not only bringing us closer together, but it allows us to keep traditions going and keep restaurants open.”

“Arsenic & Old Lace”
by Joseph Kesselring
Kris Shaw, director
This uproarious farce tells the tale of two seemingly sweet spinster aunts who turn out to be serial murderers. As if that weren’t enough, one brother thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt and another is on the run with his plastic surgeon. This romping dark comedy is full of surprises, quick wit, and plenty of laughs about surviving the insanity of family.
Starring Janet Shea (Abby Brewster), Helen Blanke (Martha Brewster). Leon Contavesprie (Mortimer Brewster) with Louis Dudoussat (Teddy Brewster), Jonathan Damaré (Officer O’Hara), Bryce Slocumb (Jonathan Brewster), Earl Scioneaux (Dr. Einstein), and Alison Logan (Elaine Harper). Featuring Peter Gabb, Paul Bello, Blake Buchert, Ron Blanchard, and Eric Lincoln.

Here is part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower-middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”

This amazing weather has me dreaming of the Mediterranean Coast of France - from the Languedoc to Provence, it's one of the most breathtakingly beautiful areas of the world AND it's the home of some of my favorite French wines. It also gives me the perfect excuse to highlight a newly released 2020 rosé just in time for spring!

French Spritz! We'll start you off with one of the best beach or poolside beverage, a light and refreshing spritz! French wine brightened up with botanicals and a little effervescence, perfect for a warm day on the coast or the bayou...

2020 Domaine Lafage Miraflors Rosé - Named after an old estate located in the heart of Domaine Lafage, Mas Miraflors, the Miraflors Rosé is sourced from old vines of Grenache Gris and Noir, some nearing 80 years old, planted near the Mediterranean. Year after year this wine is always a store favorite and I think 2020 is the best vintage yet.

2019 Domaine de Castelnau Picpoul de Pinet L'Etang - It has grown by Étang de Thau, a string of lagoons stretching from the coast to the Pyrénées, for centuries, but it’s only fairly recently that Picpoul de Pinet has gained widespread appreciation as a dry white wine. Picpoul’s name literally translates to ‘lip stinger’, due to its zingy acidity. In Languedoc, Picpoul de Pinet wines are often paired with local shellfish like mussels and oysters, as its zesty acidity makes it a prime partner for seafood, hence the perfect New Orleans white!

2017 Château Puech-Haut, Languedoc Prestige Rouge - Located near the far western border of the Rhône valley, Chateau Puech-Haut benefits from both its proximity to the Mediterranean and the rugged, mountainous interior of France. Combining 65-80 year old Grenache with 45 year old Syrah then fermented and aged concrete, they have crafted a dense and powerful wine that captures the warm climate of the Mediterranean. Organic and practicing biodynamic, it is a critic's favorite rating 90+ points year after year.
Covid 19 Update - we are open for pickup, delivery and limited shopping AND you can now have a glass or a bottle on our patio or front tables or we can sell you a glass to go. No indoor consumption is permitted at this time. Please see our rules of engagement posted on the door and feel free to call with any questions, 504 304 0635 and don't forget your mask!!

New Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – The sights and sounds of a defining local cultural practice, second line parades, come alive in “Dancing in the Streets: Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans,” on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from March 6 to June 13, 2021.
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.

In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.

. COVID-19 safety protocols—facemasks, timed ticketing and limited gallery capacity to ensure social distancing—will be in place,

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.

Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic Releases Official 2021 Poster Design Featuring City Park Scene from New Orleans Artist Terry Marks
Top 500 Men and Top 500 Women in April’s Virtual 10K Race will Receive
 a Free Poster
Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic officials have released the official poster for 2021 featuring a realistic painting from locally renowned artist Terry Marks. The 2021 poster features City Park’s picturesque Peristyle reflecting on a pool of water during a sunset.

Marks drew inspiration for the painting and poster from the scenic beauty of City Park and New Orleans, and he used both as inspiration for his take on the highly anticipated annual CCC poster.

“A photographer friend of mine took this image of the Peristyle at sunset and I knew immediately it was the image I wanted to incorporate into my poster design,” said Marks. “Ever since I became an artist most of my subject matter involves local themes, I love capturing the beauty of our city.”

Marks is the owner of Local Artscapes By Terry J. Marks, Sr. His studio is in Metairie on Airline Highway.

Marks’ official CCC poster will be available for sale at www.ccc10k.com. In continuation of CCC tradition, the top 500 men and top 500 women finishers will all receive a commemorative poster for free.

The 43rd running of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic will be a virtual race in 2021 due to COVID guidelines. The virtual 10K race will be available for participants to complete between Thursday, April 1 through Monday, April 5.
