NATIONAL STAR WARS DAY
May the Fourth be with you each year on National Star Wars Day. Or is it, “May the force be with you?” It all depends on whether you like using puns or not.
Thousands of Star Wars enthusiasts celebrate this day each year with parties and celebrations around the nation.
Star Wars fans didn’t first introduce the often quoted phrase on May 4th. It was 1979, and Britain elected the first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. On May 4th, the day she took office, the Conservative Party placed an advertisement in The London Evening News, which read, “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
Star Wars creator, George Lucas, was asked during a 2005 interview on a German news TV channel to say the famous sentence “May the Force Be with You.” Upon doing so, the interpreter interpreted the sentence into German as Am4 Mai sind wir bei Ihnen (On May 4 we are with you). TV Total captured this and aired it on May 18, 2005.

Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic and Ochsner Bring Back Me Time Challenge as New Mother’s Day Tradition Benefiting Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center
 at Ochsner Baptist
Virtual Challenge Begins May 15, 2021 and Ends June 15, 2021
(New Orleans) – The Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic and Ochsner Health are teaming up again to bring back the Me Time Challenge and create a new Mother’s Day tradition. The virtual challenge aims to help women prioritize self-care and wellness with health focused tips and special access to wellness and nutrition offers from Ochsner Health. The challenge is open to everyone from fitness beginners to workout experts, and participants will have the option of walking, jogging, running, cycling, swimming or any physical activity they choose to accumulate their miles.

All registrants receive a virtual bib, commemorative Me Time Challenge tank top or t-shirt (participant’s choice) and a finisher’s medallion. The entry cost for both the individual and team challenges is $36. A portion of challenge proceeds and all donations from participants will go directly to the Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center at Ochsner Baptist, which provides comprehensive, coordinated care using a holistic approach to the unique healthcare needs of women, including specialized gynecologic care for cancer survivors.

“Mental and physical health are such vital issues for women in today’s world,” said Me Time Challenge Operations Director Kristen Stuart. “This year, we’re aligning Me Time Challenge with Mother’s Day to encourage women to create new Mother’s Day traditions and help people from around the globe get up, get out, get moving and get excited about improving their physical and mental health.”

There are two formats for the challenge: a 30-mile individual challenge and a 100-mile team challenge. For every five miles a participant logs, they will unlock health focused tips along with special access to wellness and nutrition offers provided by Ochsner Health to better physical and mental health. Participants will start tracking their miles via RunSignUp.com beginning Saturday, May 15. The deadline to log all individual or team miles is Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

“The Me Time Challenge is all about carving out time to focus on your overall wellbeing – both the physical and the mental – while also giving back to women in the community in need of the holistic care and support provided by the Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center at Ochsner Baptist,” said Elizabeth Lapeyre, MD, Medical Director for the Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center at Ochsner Baptist. “It’s important to remind women to take a step back from the busy world and tune into what their physical and mental needs are in that moment. If one is out of balance, the other is too and can impact your overall wellbeing.”

Despite the team's 4-0 start in 2018, Book replaced Brandon Winbush as the starting quarterback for the final nine contests, completing 214-of-314 passes for 2,628 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He started all 13 games as a junior, winning the team's Offensive Player of the Year award. Young was named to the SEC Community Service Team in 2019.

NATIONAL ORANGE JUICE DAY
On May 4th National Orange Juice Day recognizes America’s most popular breakfast drink. Orange juice holds a large margin over second-place apple juice, too. People have been waking up to a glass of orange juice for many years and enjoying the health benefits it gives them.
One 8 ounce serving of orange juice has 124 mg of vitamin C and also supplies potassium, thiamine, and folate. That little bit of sunshine in the morning can add a boost to your day. Get your orange juice fresh squeezed, bottled, or in concentrated form in the freezer section. You can also enjoy orange juice blends for delicious combinations.
The United States is second only to Brazil in the production of orange juice, and they’re second only to Canada in consumption.
Another excellent way to add orange juice to your diet if you are watching your sugar intake is to include it as an ingredient in a recipe. Orange juice adds great flavor to smoothies, whole-grain waffles, or french toast.
NATIONAL CANDIED ORANGE PEEL DAY
National Candied Orange Peel Day is observed annually on May 4th. Candied Orange Peels are a boiled, sliced, and sugared treat.
Chefs and bakers like using them to add bright flavor to dishes as well as beautiful garnishes. Often used in holiday baking such as cookies and fruitcakes, they also add flavor to other foods as well. Add them to granola, tarts, and other pastries. You can also enjoy them as a snack on their own.
Dip the candied orange peel in milk or dark chocolate for a decadent candy. Not only is it delicious but it’s also a fanciful gift anyone would appreciate.

Sounds … mm-mmm … delicious … just imagine a hamburger plopping out of a can onto a grill, and you’ll probably get a picture of why this idea never caught on. Sure, canned meats are viable, but no matter which way you slice it, they’re usually pretty gross.
Oh, Golly! Oh, Gee!

“Yes, girls … only five cents for a bigger, better, delicious TOOTSIE ROLL.”

“Find out this woman’s one simple trick for beating her husband’s alcoholism!” It’s the same as “dermatologists HATE her! Click to find out why!” Except you have to write an actual letter, and some fake company will mail you a fake solution for alcoholism that you then have to buy.
For some reason, in the time period from the ’50s to the ’70s, the Jell-O company thought it’d be a good idea to market their product to people as a vehicle for casseroles and/or other dinner ingredients. The result? A gross mixture of old food bits and gelatin that was sure to offend palettes everywhere. Thank goodness Jell-O decided to quit that and stick to their lane — desserts and shots.

The Mary Taylor Wines have been stealing prime real estate on our shelves for over a year now. Her unassuming labels could be easily overlooked - nothing flashy here, no trendy gimmicks or eye catching graphics. Traditional, classic wines from unsung regions that are the antithesis of many of the current trends. No ridiculous price tags either...incredibly affordable, authentic, old world wines for under $20.

So who is Mary Taylor? The first thing that sets her apart is that she is in a rare position of being a woman in the wine import business. She first fell in love with wine in the early 1990’s and it was the European classics that stole her heart. As a young professional selling French and Italian wine, first in the New York wine auctions and then as a merchant, she quickly learned to appreciate wine in the “Old World” way— not as a high priced luxury good reserved for special occasions, but a living agricultural product that belongs to everyday life. That appreciation led her to create Mary Taylor Wine as a way to offer regular folks the honest, authentic wines that the Europeans have been enjoying for centuries.

Her wine import company is all about bringing broader awareness of the history and culture of incredible European wines to the masses at reasonable prices. She partners with grower-producers who farm their land respectfully and who are true artisans. While the majority of the wineries are independent, she also works with small co-operatives whose viticulture practices align with her values of sustainability, minimal intervention, and artisanship.

Maria Muldaur with Tuba Skinny - Let's Get Happy Together

Artist: Maria Muldaur with Tuba Skinny

Album: Let's Get Happy Together

Label: Stony Plain Records

Album Release: May 7, 2021
Maria Muldaur with Tuba Skinny set to release Let's Get Happy Together on May 7, 2021 via Stony Plain Records.

When Maria Muldaur discovered the music of Tuba Skinny she learned that just like herself, these musicians study, play and immerse themselves in early blues, jazz and jug-band music of the 20s and 30s. Listening to their albums, Maria came to the conclusion that “they were not just playing a marvelous repertoire of cool tunes with great skill and authenticity, but somehow channeling the very atmosphere and vibration of that bygone era.”

Just prior to the Covid Pandemic in January 2020, Maria asked Tuba Skinny to
collaborate in a showcase performance at the International Folk Alliance Conference in New Orleans. It was so well received that an album was immediately conceived and recorded later that year, with the title track summing it all up: Let’s Get Happy Together.

Performing 12 songs as close as possible in feeling to the original recordings, Tuba Skinny and Maria Muldaur breathed life into rarely heard gems from this incredible era. Maria Muldaur’s 55-plus year career is a long and adventurous odyssey through the forms of American Roots Music: Blues, Jug Band, Bluegrass, Jazz and Appalachian “Old Timey” Music. Over 42 albums Maria has been nominated 6 times for Grammy Awards, as well as for Blues, Folk and Roots awards. She has been recognized at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis for many of her Stony Plain releases over the years, and is the 2019 recipient of the “Lifetime Achievement Americana Trailblazer Award” from the Americana Musi

Ten Years of Decorative
Arts Fieldwork

May–September 5, 2021
Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m–4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 10:30 a.m–4:30 p.m.
520 Royal Street, Tricentennial Wing, 1st Floor
Free ticketed admission
Decorative arts objects—furniture, home furnishings, and the tools of daily life—carry the stories of the people who made and used them. The Historic New Orleans Collection’s exhibition Pieces of History showcases the Decorative Arts of the Gulf South (DAGS) project’s efforts to preserve and share these stories.
DAGS began in 2011, when New Orleans attorney and avid antiques collector Paul Haygood (1943–2015) established the Classical Institute of the South (CIS) to document decorative arts objects made or used in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama before 1865. Part of THNOC since 2015—and renamed DAGS this year—the project’s summer fellows travel to historic homes across the Gulf South to achieve this mission.
Pieces of History celebrates DAGS’s first decade by exhibiting significant objects cataloged by fieldwork teams alongside research photographs taken for the database. Field stories from the project’s alumni highlight memorable experiences and meaningful objects from the summers the fellows spent exploring the historic houses of the Gulf South. The exhibition also examines trade networks, cultural values, and the brutal system of enslavement that produced the Gulf South’s wealth.
Pieces of History is now open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Admission is free, but we suggest preordering tickets for timed entry. THNOC is adhering to all safety guidelines; visitors are required to wear face masks and observe social distancing limits.
The Historic New Orleans Collection gratefully acknowledges the sponsors of the exhibition, Nell H. and Fredric J. Figge and Mrs. Frank W. Masson.

Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – The sights and sounds of a defining local cultural practice, second line parades, come alive in “Dancing in the Streets: Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans,” on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection to June 13, 2021.
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.

In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.

“The Slowest Second Line on Earth” – Turtles ‘On Parade’ & Brunch Celebration
Since 2015, on every Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend, the “Krewe of Turtles” has taken a festive stroll around the French Quarter and back to their “watering” hole, New Orleans style, on ten custom-festooned wagons in a parade led by a bag-pipe procession and police motorcade, all forming “the slowest second line on earth.” This year, due to COVID restrictions, the turtles are taking a break from their annual trip around the “quarters” and will instead be ON PARADE – and their customary decorative floats will be displayed for viewing in the Brennan’s courtyard from 9 AM – 6 PM on Saturday, May 8, 2021. The tradition will “slowly” continue with a blessing at 10 AM from Monsignor Nalty and at 11 AM, a pardon like no other — a clever new tale, penned each year as a poem by State District Court Judge Lauren Lemmon.
In honor of the turtles, Brennan’s is rolling out the green carpet, literally, for a special Breakfast at Brennan’s offering with added festive green drinks, special Chocolate Turtles for dessert, and bundles of balloons – making a picture perfect backdrop for a photo-op with Mom.
Brunch will feature socially-distant seatings from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Signature dishes such as Brennan’s Eggs Sardou and Eggs Benedict promise to warm the heart and please the palate. Notably, Turtle Soup has been taken off the menu on this day, in respect for the event’s honorees.
Guests can ‘pace’ themselves throughout the day with a special Happy Hour from 2 PM to 6 PM, featuring celebratory cocktails including The Topsy Turvy and the vibrantly green-hued Grasshopper.

New Orleans
Greek Festival
Greek Feast - A Tribute to the Greek Festival will be presented on May 28 and 29, 2021, in a drive-up only setting with all purchases preordered and prepaid. Although the annual Greek Festival is scheduled for early November, the Holy Trinity Cathedral family will present some familiar, as well as new, offerings during the Memorial Day weekend that will include “heat and eat” options; convenient frozen items for individual or family enjoyment; and some cold salad, vegetable, and dessert delicacies. Whatever your selection, you can anticipate a delicious Greek fare!

Please note that pick-up hours were extended on the main day, Saturday, May 29, and three hours were added on Friday, May 28, to better serve you. Our goal is to provide an expedient and pleasant delivery experience for our patrons, particularly those who supported the Spring Greek Feast and had long wait times. By employing a more efficient delivery system, extending pick-up times, and limiting the number of orders per time slot, we aim to minimize your wait when you arrive. Also, for your convenience, a reminder will be emailed a few days prior to May 28 and 29, stating your selected time.
As always, your participation is deeply appreciated, and we look forward to serving you Memorial Day weekend!
