7 Bars In New Orleans That Are Loaded With Fascinating History
It’s no secret that New Orleans has a lot of bars. When you’re looking to unwind after a long day, you have hundreds of options to choose from. With a city as old as New Orleans, it should come as no surprise that even our bars have a fascinating history behind them. Let’s take a look at some of our favorites.
6. The Sazerac Bar

Named after the world’s first mixed cocktail (that was invented right here in New Orleans!), you’ll find the Sazerac Bar located in The Roosevelt Hotel. Established in 1938, the bar was a popular hangout for Huey P. Long and other politicians. The cocktail menu is filled with old fashioned drinks like the gin fizz, negronis, and of course, the drink that started it all—the sazerac. 130 Roosevelt Way, New Orleans, Louisiana 70112.

Traffic Advisory: Temporary Intersection Closures
on Bourbon Street

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works contractor Hard Rock Construction Co. LLC, and contractors for MCI Metro, Cox Communications, Southern Light, and AT&T have temporarily closed intersections along Bourbon Street for utility work and pavement restoration.

Several streets crossing Bourbon Street will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic to allow utility contractors to perform underground improvements. The contractors will install temporary metal traffic plates when work is completed so normal traffic flow can be restored as soon as possible. The majority of the utility work will be done by excavating sidewalks; however, some work will impact roadway access.

The intersection closures will be minimized as much as possible. The following intersections will be affected during demolition, construction, and pavement restoration and drivers may experience detours at these intersections during the following time frames:
  • Bourbon/Iberville, Nov. 4-13
  • Bourbon/Bienville, Nov. 9-20
  • Bourbon/Conti, Nov. 16-27
  • Bourbon/St. Louis, Nov. 23-Dec. 4
  • Bourbon/Toulouse, Nov. 30-Dec. 11
  • Bourbon/St. Peter, Dec. 7-18
  • Bourbon/Orleans, Dec. 7-18
  • Bourbon/St. Ann, Dec. 14-25

  • This November 10th is Sesame Street Day! Did you know that Sesame Street is the most widely viewed kids’ show in the world? Though initially meant to simply be fun and educational, the show has evolved into an international cultural phenomenon. Let’s use this day to spell out our love for this unforgettable program!
Some people think that “vanilla” is synonymous with “boring,” but National Vanilla Cupcake Day is dedicated to dispelling that myth. The very first cupcakes date back to the late 18th century and took their name from the small ramekins or cups in which they were baked. (Who knew nonstick muffin tins weren’t widely available in the 1700s?) We’ve come a long way since then—now, cupcakes are miniature, edible works of art that are almost too pretty to eat. Almost. Diehard chocoholics, do what you will on November 10; the rest of us will be trying not to get vanilla frosting on our noses.

The Consulate General of France in Louisiana will display an outdoor exhibition of new works by New Orleans photographer David Spielman capturing local life amid the coronavirus pandemic. "New Orleans: Tested Again" is a series of black and white photos showing New Orleanians going about daily life, such as grocery shopping, attending church and returning to schools.
Inspired by exhibitions displayed on the fences of Paris' Luxembourg Gardens, "New Orleans: Tested Again" will be attached to the fences of the Consulate General at 2406 Prytania St. The photos will be on display through Nov. 23.
"The history of France and New Orleans is long, rich and extremely important," a short exhibit statement says. "For more than 300 years, in good and bad times, we have stood together. During this worldwide pandemic we are once again side by side. Together we will thrive."

Crystal clear waters, consistent climate, salty ocean breezes, rugged rocky coastlines - Croatia, Slovenia and the eastern coast of Italy all enjoy the magnificent effects of the Adriatic Sea. The vineyards here are strongly influenced by the Alps that bring cold air in the evenings, prolonging the ripening season and retaining acidity levels. Sea breezes from the Adriatic during the day keep vineyards cool, dry and disease free. A wine lover's dream, these areas have been producing wine for centuries using indigenous varieties that complement their cuisine and lifestyles.

In our Friday Tasting this week we'll highlight 4 wine regions that benefit from their proximity to the Adriatic sea, delivering beautiful, unique wines that will make you want to dive deeper into these culturally rich areas. Jenni from Lirette Selections will be pouring 2 reds, a white and an orange!

The Round Table Luncheon is celebrating its 15th year. Since it started in August 2005, the monthly event has been attracting a distinguished guest list of influential movers and shakers. Modeled after Dorothy Parker’s famed gatherings at the old Algonquin Hotel in New York, each luncheon focuses on a current topic of interest locally within the arts, cultural activities and philanthropic initiatives that set our community apart and enhance our quality of life.

Celebration in the Oaks to be a drive-through attraction in 2020
Celebration in the Oaks, City Park's annual holiday attraction featuring holiday light displays and more than a million lights hanging from the park's oak trees, will run from Nov. 26 through Jan. 3, 2021. To adapt to coronavirus, the park has made several changes, including that it will be a driving instead of walking experience.
Celebration in the Oaks used to be viewable by car, but the park changed it to pedestrian-only in 2004. The drive is 2.25 miles, and guests will not be allowed to get out of their cars to explore exhibits.
New exhibits include a salute to medical personnel. Displays from past years with a driving option will return, including "Monstro," the whale from Pinocchio and a 15-foot tall waving Santa Claus. Regular attractions include lighted dinosaur figures, a unicorn, a pirate ship in the lagoon, flamingos, a Who Dat tree, scenes of Jackson Square, a musical tribute and more.
Admission will be by timed ticketing, and a limited number of tickets will be available. Tickets for cars and SUVs range from $18.99 to $32.99 for up to eight guests in a vehicle. There also are options for limos and party busses. Hours of operation will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
These are the dates and times of each full moon appearing in 2020, along with the most popular nicknames. The times are in the Eastern time zone in the United States.

beaver moon

WHY IS IT CALLED THE BEAVER MOON?
November’s full Moon was traditionally called the Beaver Moon by a number of Native Americans and colonial Americans. Many Native American groups used the monthly Moons and nature’s corresponding signs as a calendar to track the seasons.
Why the “Beaver” Moon? This is the time of year when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges, having laid up sufficient stores of food for the long winter ahead. During the time of the fur trade in North America, it was also the season to trap beavers for their thick, winter-ready pelts.
