RECIPE OF THE WEEK:
Satsuma Ginger Cake
The holidays are quickly approaching, but be honest, you never need an excuse for cake! This week, we are ogling this satsuma ginger cake by food stylist Suzy Eaton complete with satsuma curd, fresh ginger and buttercream icing.

Ingredients
For the cake
  • 2 C butter 450 g- at room temperature
  • 3 C granulated sugar 640 g
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 C sour cream 260 g
  • 1 C freshly squeezed satsuma juice 260 g
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 10 g
  • 4 C cake flour 530 g
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder 12 g
  • 1 teaspoon salt 12 g
  • 1 Tablesoons ground ginger 5.5 g
  • crystalized ginger to garnish
For the satsuma curd filling
  • 3/4 C fresh satsuma juice 200 g
  • Zest of one satsuma
  • 3/4 C granulated sugar 170 g
  • 1 stick butter cubed 112 g
For the frosting
  • 3 sticks butter 337 g -at room temperature
  • 6-7 C powdered sugar 660-770 g
  • juice of 3 satsumas plus extra milk for thinning.
Directions
For the cake
Preheat oven to 350 degrees (325 for convection) This recipe makes either a 4 layer cake using 8" pans, or a 3 layer cake using 9" pans. Spray pans generously with baking spray. Using a stand mixer, cream the butter, sugar until fluffy. Its important that the butter is at room temperature. Add eggs, one at a time. Add the sour cream and vanilla and combine. Slowly add the satsuma juice and mix well.
Sift all dry ingredients together and add one cup at a time to the wet mixture and mix until combined, scraping bowl occasionally. Divide batter evenly between cake pans. In 8" pans, bake 30-35 mins. 9" pans 35-40 mins, or when toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
For the curd filling
In a 2 quart saucepan, combine satsuma juice, zest and sugar. In a small bowl beat the eggs and whisk into the juice and sugar. Cube the butter and add to the pan. Cook over medium heat until thickens, about 6 minutes. Cool completely in the refrigerator.
For the Frosting
Using the stand mixer, with whisk attachment, cream butter, slowly add powdered sugar one cup at a time, intermittently add satsuma juice. If still too thick, add milk 1 teaspoon at a time until you're happy with the consistency.
Cake Assembly
Put some of the frosting in a piping bag and cut 1/2" hole in the tip. Place first cake layer on plate or cake stand. Run a band of frosting around the edge of the cake and fill the center with the satsuma curd. Repeat this with each layer, except the top layer. Apply a crumb coat to the whole cake, then put the cake in the freezer for 20 mins to set the crumb coat. Frost the cake the way you like it, then run a ring of crystalized ginger around the top edge for garnish. Chill cake in the refrigerator until you're ready to cut it.

It’s Satsuma Season!
It is officially our favorite time of year - satsuma season. Cousin to the tangerine and clementine, this citrus variety has been grown in Japan for over 700 years! In the 1800s, the satsuma made its voyage to the New World and has been cultivated in southeastern Louisiana parishes ever since. This loose-skinned citrus is easy to peel and makes a great on-the-go snack for kids and adults alike. Sweet, juicy and a vitamin C powerhouse, its day-glo juice is like a cup of liquid sunshine and New Orleans’ first taste of fall. While the first of the season are usually green, rest assured that sugar content testing has verified that they’re plenty sweet now, and those sugars will only develop further as the season progresses. Great for juicing, mimosas, glazes and much more these orange globes can be stored for up to a month in the fridge.
VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Star Nursery
Welcome back to the market Star Nursery, a fifth generation family farm from Belle Chasse, LA. The Ranatza family started a truck farm in New Orleans after immigrating from Italy in the 1920s, then moved to Belle Chasse in the ‘40s and added citrus and a tree nursery to their repertoire. Now, not only do they attend CCFM markets, but also collaborate with us in our farm to school efforts, bringing fresh local fruit to New Orleans schools. You can currently find satsumas and persimmons at their table, and lemons and navels are on their way!

Located just upriver from the Crescent City Connection, the old Market Street Power Plant was constructed in 1905 on 20-acres by the city of New Orleans. The 5-story glass, brick, and steel plant was taken over in 1922 with the formation of New Orleans Public Service (now Entergy) to provide electricity for the entire city. It was originally a coal-fired -- hence the two iconic smokestack towers -- and relied on the Mississippi River for water to cool the machinery.
The plant remined in constant operation until 1973. Within days the first graffiti went up today the abandoned site is covered with graffiti. The occasional media shoot takes place when the script calls for something steampunk and sci-fi-like (consider that Mad Max took place in 2021). It has been said, but I cannot verify, that the twin smokestacks are protected in some way from being removed as they constitute a visual navigation point for river pilots.
Entergy sold the facility in 2007, which was sold again in 2015 for a proposed multi-entertainment venue which has never come to pass. So the property sits, collecting evermore graffiti and debris from the occasional ground-floor flood when the river rises.

Originally named the Mortuary Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua, this place of worship was built in 1826 during the age of epidemics to serve as a burial church for the victims of yellow fever and other diseases. According to the state landmark plaque, it is the oldest surviving church in the city of New Orleans. It was constructed by renowned architects Gurlie and Guillot for $14,000.
In 1841, the chapel began to be used as a church to relieve the burden of baptisms at St. Louis Cathedral. In 1870, Bishop Perche designated the church for use by the growing Italian immigrant community and the church was a place of worship for the Italian community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In 1918, Archbishop Shaw requested the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate to send priests to New Orleans. In that year, the Oblate Fathers took up residence and began to minister to Our Lady of Guadalupe as they do to this day. The current name of the church was received in 1918.
Located on the corner of North Rampart and Conti Street, the church serves as the International Shrine for St. Jude, one of the twelve apostles. In addition, there is a statue of St. Expedite near the entrance who the locals claim can cure procrastination.

So in celebration of her life's work, our Friday tasting this week will focus on female winemakers along with some memory refreshing materials on her accomplishments and rulings that made her the Supreme Court’s Feminist Icon.

MENDING THE SKY OPENS
This fall the New Orleans Museum of Art will present Mending the Sky, the museum’s first major exhibition following the months-long shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On view October 10, 2020, through January 31, 2021, the exhibition will bring together eleven artists’ projects that respond to a world turned upside down.

Inspired by one of the works in the exhibition, Mending the Sky takes its title from a Chinese fable in which a rip in the sky causes the earth to split open, bringing floods, fires, famine, and disease—until a goddess comes to take on the arduous task of mending the broken sky. Each of the artworks in the exhibition help give shape to the aftermath of calamity, building towards a more equitable future by helping to envision the new world that might rise in the wake of crisis. Premiering several major new acquisitions by both locally based and internationally recognized artists, Mending the Sky will bring a global perspective to issues currently affecting the city of New Orleans, the United States and the world. With roots in Brazil, China, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Vietnam, India, and the American South, each of these artist projects are also acts of world-building that offer a glimpse of a future that cannot yet be seen.
“Mending the Sky touches on the many complex ideas that we, as a community, have been challenged to address in the times of COVID-19,” says Susan Taylor, Montine McDaniel Freeman Director at NOMA. “This is an exhibition about loss and uncertainty, but also creates space for recovery, healing, and hope.”
“Mending the Sky focuses on artists who consider the crucial actions of care, healing and coming together,” says exhibition curator Katie A. Pfohl. “Each of them recognizes the hard work of recovery: that we must remedy the challenges of the past and address present issues to forge a new path forward.”

Cutting Edge REDUX - Music Business Sessions

Oct 14, 2020, 2:00 PM - Oct 17, 2020, 5:00 PM (your local time)
New Orleans: The Cutting Edge REDUX, virtual conference will address the pandemic's impact on the global music industry's two major income streams, "Live Music" and "Recorded Music," October 14 – 17, 2020.
Essentially the industry is large, and the problems caused by the pandemic are immense. As such, the Cutting Edge REDUX will attempt to reduce the magnitude of the problem to the burning music industry questions, “What the Hell are we going to do for the next 18 months?” ‘Where should I invest my time to have my best music future?”

We will hear from some of the music industry's most essential influencers during the Cutting Edge REDUX sessions. These industry experts, entertainment attorneys, and artists have the proven knowledge needed to assess the global pandemic's impact and consequences on musicians and music businesses. They will give answers and recommend strategies to attendees.

An outline of the pandemic effects on the music industry addressed during the Cutting Edge REDUX follows below.

Music industry areas struggling from income lost:
● Booking and touring - vastly fewer gigs

● Recording and distribution - delayed CD releases

● How and where to license music
Other effects show the compassion of the industry:

● Public-private support – funding to artists and crews

● Public sector funding – Governments and public agencies
The music industry has embraced new ways to make money, 'leaning into' the challenge, seeing an opportunity, and creating action:

● Livestreaming – larger audiences, a pandemic bounce in audience availability

● Sharing the streaming fees with the artists

● Selling advertisements to a streaming event

● Establishing a payment method for and during Livestream performances
Long-term gains & industry realities

● Changing relationships with label-artists, songwriters and recording engineers

● The growth of third-party platforms in shaping music distribution, discovery and
consumer behavior

In partnership with the Vieux Carre Commission and the City's Department of Utilities, several organizations including VCPORA, Vieux Carre Commission Foundation, French Quarter Management District and French Quarter Business Association have been exploring ways to mitigate adverse effects the additional of a 5G network would have on the French Quarter's historic "tout ensemble."

Following several years of litigation, including a victory that reestablished Section 106 Review for this technology, federal judges have ruled that, while local municipalities cannot prohibit the installation of 5G networks, they can regulate their design and locations. We are pleased to announce a viewing of a new 5G prototype, modeled after our existing lamp posts that will be on display this week and want to gather feedback.

Walter 'Wolfman' Washington & The Roadmasters
Hosted by d.b.a. New Orleans and StageIt
Every Wednesday Streaming LIVE on StageIt from d.b.a in New Orleans.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been a mainstay in the New Orleans music scene since the early 1960s. He cut his teeth backing up some of the best singers and performers in New Orleans history including Lee Dorsey, Johnny Adams, and Irma Thomas before putting together his long time band The Roadmasters, who have been burning down and burning up local and national stages since their first gigs in the 1980s. This new record confirms what fans have known for years: Walter “Wolfman Washington has soul to go along with that fire.

Like many African-American musicians in the South, Washington started singing in school and the church. He had just hit double digits when he formed an acapella spirituals group in his neighborhood called the True Love and Gospel Singers. One Sunday they went on the local gospel show on WBOK to sing, and Washington noticed the guitar player in the studio who was playing behind them. “I just sat there and watched him,” Washington recalls, “He was playing with all his fingers.” When Washington got home he made his own guitar from a cigar box, rubber bands, and a clothes hanger. One of his uncles saw this and gave him a real guitar, and Washington started practicing. His dad supported his music, and took him to see a musician he knew across the river from New Orleans, and those two played his first gig in Gretna, Louisiana. Even though his parents were not musicians, “I had lots of uncles who played guitar. Guitar Slim and Lightnin' Slim were my uncles. And Ernie K-Doe – the renowned New Orleans performer and singer of international hit “Mother in Law” - was his cousin.
We are thrilled to have Walter return to the d.b.a. stage where he & the Roadmasters have been performing every Wednesday since 2006. He is a New Orleans legend.

Special Exhibits
Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II: Activated on January 20, 1944, the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the “Ghost Army,” was the first mobile, multimedia, tactical deception unit in US Army history. Consisting of an authorized strength of 82 officers and 1,023 men under the command of Army veteran Colonel Harry L. Reeder, this unique and top-secret unit was capable of simulating two whole divisions—approximately 30,000 men—and used visual, sonic, and radio deception to fool German forces during World War II’s final year. Now, through The National WWII Museum’s newest special exhibit, Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II, visitors can learn the story of the 23rd and their role in Allied victory through featured artifacts such as artwork, uniforms, an inflatable tank, and more.
Remembered Light: Glass Fragments from World War II, the McDonald Windows is a collection of 25 art pieces produced by Atelier Le Roux in Oakland, California, using shards of glass from damaged and destroyed European churches collected during World War II by the late US Army Episcopal chaplain Frederick McDonald. McDonald, who served under General Omar Bradley in the 12th Army Group through war-torn Europe, collected shards of stained glass and other mementos from desecrated sanctuary sites he visited from 1944 to 1945 after he first encountered a church in England destroyed by bombing and was heartbroken by the ruins.

St. Anna’s Church kicks off “Tip Jar” Music series to help local musicians survive COVID pandemic shut down
Thursday, 6 p.m. Live-stream concerts provide safe, open place for local artists to get income and promote the city’s music legacy

Every Thursday at 6 p.m., individuals can tune into the facebook page for St. Anna’s Episcopal Church and enjoy New Orleans musicians do their thing in the hopes you will contribute to their individual online “tip jar” to help support their art, announced the Very Reverend William H. Terry, Rector, St. Anna’s Episcopal Church.
“St. Anna’s has a history of supporting New Orleans musicians, especially since 2005 and the levee failure following Hurricane Katrina,” said Fr. Bill. “We provide a venue for them to play as well as offer them food and other services as The Mission to Musicians.”

“Once again, New Orleans musicians are hard pressed to produce income because of the COVID pandemic and closure of music venues. Our church offers use of our audio-visual and electronic equipment, as well as our space, to help them bring in some income through their own online tip jar,” said Fr. Bill.
Event sponsors are also sought to help every performer at least receive a baseline payment of $100 to $500 per gig, depending on the size of the music group. The program is made possible with the help of Jack Craft, an artist with Sweet Crude, and St. Anna’s Place staff.
 Additional upcoming performances include:

  • ·      And Indie bands Alexis and the Samurai and Free Feral on Oct. 15 and 22 respectively.
  •

New Orleans photographer David Spielman with Vincent Sciama, Counsul General of France in Louisiana. An exhibition of Spielman's works, 'New Orleans: Tested Again,' will be on display on the fences of the consulate along Prytania Street.
PROVIDED PHOTO BY AUDOIN DE VERGNETTE
The Consulate General of France in Louisiana will display an outdoor exhibition of new works by New Orleans photographer David Spielman capturing local life amid the coronavirus pandemic. "New Orleans: Tested Again" is a series of black and white photos showing New Orleanians going about daily life, such as grocery shopping, attending church and returning to schools.
Inspired by exhibitions displayed on the fences of Paris' Luxembourg Gardens, "New Orleans: Tested Again" will be attached to the fences of the Consulate General at 2406 Prytania St. The photos will be on display through Nov. 23.
"The history of France and New Orleans is long, rich and extremely important," a short exhibit statement says. "For more than 300 years, in good and bad times, we have stood together. During this worldwide pandemic we are once again side by side. Together we will thrive."

Jeff Duncan in conversation with Fletcher Mackel discussing Duncan's book, Payton and Brees: The Men Who Built the Greatest Offense in NFL History.
"As the city was rebuilding following Hurricane Katrina, Sean Payton arrived in 2006 as a relative unknown, a first-time NFL head coach tasked with resurrecting a New Orleans Saints team that had just finished 3-13. Two months after Payton was hired, the Saints signed a free agent quarterback who was cast aside by the San Diego Chargers: Drew Brees."

Celebration in the Oaks to be a drive-through attraction in 2020
Celebration in the Oaks, City Park's annual holiday attraction featuring holiday light displays and more than a million lights hanging from the park's oak trees, will run from Nov. 26 through Jan. 3, 2021. To adapt to coronavirus, the park has made several changes, including that it will be a driving instead of walking experience.
Celebration in the Oaks used to be viewable by car, but the park changed it to pedestrian-only in 2004. The drive is 2.25 miles, and guests will not be allowed to get out of their cars to explore exhibits.
New exhibits include a salute to medical personnel. Displays from past years with a driving option will return, including "Monstro," the whale from Pinocchio and a 15-foot tall waving Santa Claus. Regular attractions include lighted dinosaur figures, a unicorn, a pirate ship in the lagoon, flamingos, a Who Dat tree, scenes of Jackson Square, a musical tribute and more.
Admission will be by timed ticketing, and a limited number of tickets will be available. Tickets for cars and SUVs range from $18.99 to $32.99 for up to eight guests in a vehicle. There also are options for limos and party busses. Hours of operation will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
