AVONDALE MARINE AWARDED
MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR
GRANT TO
 MODERNIZE CARGO DOCK
(AVONDALE, La) -- Last week, the Department of Transportation approved nearly $10 million in funding to support improvements to the iconic former Avondale Shipyard property. Avondale Marine was awarded $9,880,000 to convert an aging wharf at the historic site into a modern cargo dock.

The infusion of funds will help to create over 2,000 jobs, improve traffic flow and allow Avondale Marine to handle cargo more effectively. Since the former shipyard was purchased by Avondale Marine, there have been plans in place to redevelop the site’s crane, dock and terminal assets while connecting global waterborne commerce with manufacturing, fabrication and distribution facilities onshore. Over the summer, the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) submitted a letter of support for the Avondale Dock Conversion Project.

“This represents a significant step for the continued repositioning of the former Avondale Shipyard site,” said JEDCO President and CEO Jerry Bologna. “This infusion of funding will continue to create jobs and investment at the Avondale site and will create new opportunities for growth. JEDCO is proud to support this project and we look forward to remaining a steadfast partner to the long-term development of Avondale Marine.”

“We are humbled and elated that Jefferson Parish has been awarded this grant and thankful for the support of all stakeholders,” said Adam Anderson, CEO of T. Parker Host. “This grant would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our parish leaders. We would like to acknowledge Jefferson Parish President Lee Sheng and JEDCO for making Avondale’s return to commerce a top regional priority. We also would like to thank Congressmen Scalise and Richmond, in partnership with Senators Kennedy and Cassidy, whose efforts have maintained economic development, including the creation of maritime jobs, at the forefront of policy making.

“Coincidentally, this month we celebrate our two-year anniversary of the acquisition of Avondale. This grant is an exciting milestone, but also a testament to the level of cooperation that has been required for our progress. We cannot thank Governor Edwards and the entirety of the Louisiana congressional and state legislative delegation enough, for their continued commitment to Avondale and Jefferson Parish, and ask that all stakeholders remain engaged and motivated as we overcome future challenges together to put Avondale back to work.”

Other organizations joining in this effort included Greater New Orleans, Inc., Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, Jefferson Business Council, Westbank Business & Industry Association, World Trade Center New Orleans and a host of elected officials on the local, state and federal level.

Avondale Marine, a joint venture between T. Parker Host and Hilco Redevelopment Partners, purchased the 254-acre site in 2018 from Huntington Ingalls, Inc. The company is redeveloping the former shipyard into a modern, world-class global logistics hub, with value-added manufacturing at its core, to maximize job growth and investment in Jefferson Parish.

The New Orleans Saints will play their game against the Carolina Panthers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday, despite engaging in talks with LSU last week to potentially use Tiger Stadium so fans can attend
A select few fans might be able to attend Sunday's game in the Superdome, as Saints officials met with Mayor LaToya Cantrell, medical professionals at Ochsner Health and Cantrell's medical advisors Monday to discuss a phased approach to get fans back at Saints games.

The reasoning behind staying at the Dome this weekend is twofold, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Duncan. LSU has a home game Saturday night against South Carolina, so a weekend doubleheader would be tough to pull off even with adequate advance planning, let alone on a 12-day notice.
Just because the Saints are staying in New Orleans this weekend doesn't mean they'll remain at the Superdome for the remainder of the season if fans aren't allowed at the Superdome by November — especially when there isn't a scheduling issue. There remains one more back-to-back weekend for the Saints and LSU in addition to this weekend.
LSU is scheduled to host Alabama at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. The Saints are scheduled to host the San Francisco 49ers the next day at 3:25 p.m. Nov. 15.
The two teams don't have any additional overlapping home weekends after then.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Our Family Farm
Dan and Regina Wadsworth wanted one thing in life - to spend more time together and create the perfect farmstead. Almost a decade ago, their vision came to life on a little plot in Amite, Louisiana. Today, Our Family Farm sits upon 37 acres and is home to over 20 cows, 100 goats and lambs, seven faithful Great Pyrenees dogs, and a greenhouse housing over 30 different varieties of leafy greens. Like every family farm, the next generation is involved. Regina’s son Blake has been putting on his boots and learning the ropes. These days, you can find him at the Sunday Parkway Market with hydroponic lettuce, herbs, greens, and grass-fed lamb, goat, and beef. Our Family Farm is your family farm!
Bucktown Hybrid Market
Another week, another innovation! Market Umbrella is pleased to announce a new market first! Starting this Wednesday, October 21st, from 8am to noon, the CCFM Bucktown Harbor Farmers Market will become a hybrid curbside and walkup market. This means that if you love ordering online and never getting out of your car to make your groceries, you will be able to park at the market and market staff will collect your orders and deliver them to the trunk of your car--100% no contact.
But, if you’ve been itching to browse in person, outside in the fresh air and sunlight, possibly the safest way to make groceries, you can do that, too. The “modified” walk up model will comply with the CDC recommendations for safe farmers market operations. CCFM will encourage contactless payment forms, enforce social distancing and limit crowd numbers. In accordance with the state mandate we will require masks be worn by all customers, vendors and staff, among other precautions. You’ll be able to make purchases at the market from a full lineup! Local growers and other vendors will be at Bucktown Harbor with an abundance of fresh produce (first of the season fall crops like satsumas, persimmons, leafy greens, radish and turnip), seafood, meat, dairy, bread and baked goods. The CCFM Bucktown Harbor is generously supported by the Office of Councilwoman Jennifer Van Vrancken. We hope to see you there!

Patrick Earl Ryan

7:00pm to 8:00pm
Join us on Zoom for a special virtual conversation with Patrick Earl Ryan and Roxane Gay celebrating the launch of IF WE WERE ELECTRIC, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction.

"If We Were Electric, the debut short story collection from New Orleans’s native Patrick Earl Ryan is, indeed, fiercely electric. These twelve startling fictions have been crafted by a writer with an assured and absolutely original voice and a remarkable understanding of how place is as much a compelling character in a good story as the people who populate it. There are stories here about unrequited love and youthful yearning, the complexities of desire between men, the beginnings and ends of relationships, deaths both inevitable and untimely, the bitter ache of loneliness, the quiet horrors that unexpectedly befall us, and the magic of the ordinary world. With this outstanding collection, Patrick Ryan makes his mark on Southern literature and how!"

NATIONAL BRANDIED FRUIT DAY
On October 20th each year, we celebrate the delicious food holiday known as National Brandied Fruit Day!
Brandied fruit first became popular around the Victorian era. During this time, it was discovered by adding brandy to fruit, it was easiest way to make it last longer. Incidentally, this process was also a great way to harvest the taste of fruit, while creating a delicious dessert for adults.
Brandied fruit is created by soaking sweet fresh fruit in brandy, sugar, and spices. Often sitting for 30 days after preparation, this delicious treat is best used as a topping on desserts, such as pies or cakes. Interestingly, brandied fruit is used as a starter for Friendship Cake. Similar to the concept of a starter for sourdough bread, Friendship Cake takes time to prepare. However, once you’ve completed the process, you’re sure to enjoy one of the most delicious treats ever!
We’ve added a Brandied Fruit Recipe to our National Day Calendar® Recipe Collection. You may not know it, but it’s super easy to make. So easy you don’t need canning skills to make your first batch of Brandied Fruit on your own!

This 1901 photograph from the Library of Congress shows a bustling Canal Street as a thriving retail center and transportation hub. In the background is the Mercier Building which would house the first Maison Blanche store with the line of stores including D.H. Holmes in the block preceding it. Streetcars of all stripes work their way up and down Canal Street to all parts of New Orleans. And, of course, mule-drawn wagons deliver goods and haul freight.

On the lower side of the street cars there are initials what do they mean?

I see “181” the car number.

New Orleans photographer David Spielman with Vincent Sciama, Counsul General of France in Louisiana. An exhibition of Spielman's works, 'New Orleans: Tested Again,' will be on display on the fences of the consulate along Prytania Street.
PROVIDED PHOTO BY AUDOIN DE VERGNETTE
The Consulate General of France in Louisiana will display an outdoor exhibition of new works by New Orleans photographer David Spielman capturing local life amid the coronavirus pandemic. "New Orleans: Tested Again" is a series of black and white photos showing New Orleanians going about daily life, such as grocery shopping, attending church and returning to schools.
Inspired by exhibitions displayed on the fences of Paris' Luxembourg Gardens, "New Orleans: Tested Again" will be attached to the fences of the Consulate General at 2406 Prytania St. The photos will be on display through Nov. 23.
"The history of France and New Orleans is long, rich and extremely important," a short exhibit statement says. "For more than 300 years, in good and bad times, we have stood together. During this worldwide pandemic we are once again side by side. Together we will thrive."

Special Exhibits
Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II: Activated on January 20, 1944, the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the “Ghost Army,” was the first mobile, multimedia, tactical deception unit in US Army history. Consisting of an authorized strength of 82 officers and 1,023 men under the command of Army veteran Colonel Harry L. Reeder, this unique and top-secret unit was capable of simulating two whole divisions—approximately 30,000 men—and used visual, sonic, and radio deception to fool German forces during World War II’s final year. Now, through The National WWII Museum’s newest special exhibit, Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II, visitors can learn the story of the 23rd and their role in Allied victory through featured artifacts such as artwork, uniforms, an inflatable tank, and more.
Remembered Light: Glass Fragments from World War II, the McDonald Windows is a collection of 25 art pieces produced by Atelier Le Roux in Oakland, California, using shards of glass from damaged and destroyed European churches collected during World War II by the late US Army Episcopal chaplain Frederick McDonald. McDonald, who served under General Omar Bradley in the 12th Army Group through war-torn Europe, collected shards of stained glass and other mementos from desecrated sanctuary sites he visited from 1944 to 1945 after he first encountered a church in England destroyed by bombing and was heartbroken by the ruins.

St. Anna’s Church kicks off “Tip Jar” Music series to help local musicians survive COVID pandemic shut down
Thursday, 6 p.m. Live-stream concerts provide safe, open place for local artists to get income and promote the city’s music legacy

Every Thursday at 6 p.m., individuals can tune into the facebook page for St. Anna’s Episcopal Church and enjoy New Orleans musicians do their thing in the hopes you will contribute to their individual online “tip jar” to help support their art, announced the Very Reverend William H. Terry, Rector, St. Anna’s Episcopal Church.
“St. Anna’s has a history of supporting New Orleans musicians, especially since 2005 and the levee failure following Hurricane Katrina,” said Fr. Bill. “We provide a venue for them to play as well as offer them food and other services as The Mission to Musicians.”

“Once again, New Orleans musicians are hard pressed to produce income because of the COVID pandemic and closure of music venues. Our church offers use of our audio-visual and electronic equipment, as well as our space, to help them bring in some income through their own online tip jar,” said Fr. Bill.
Event sponsors are also sought to help every performer at least receive a baseline payment of $100 to $500 per gig, depending on the size of the music group. The program is made possible with the help of Jack Craft, an artist with Sweet Crude, and St. Anna’s Place staff.
 Additional upcoming performances include:

Cultural Foundation Presents: 25th Annual Halloween Costume Boo-Tique

The pandemic edition of the 25th Annual Costume Boo-tique will be held Saturday, October 24, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. in the corner lot of St. Claude Avenue and Spain Street, which is owned by longtime sponsor, the New Orleans Healing Center.
Masks will be mandated, as well as sold, at the socially distanced outdoor market, which will showcase a vast array of one-of-a-kind creations by New Orleans’ most inspired costumers, hatters, assemblage artists, mask-makers, and purveyors of fine vintage costumes.
Now a quarter-century old, the Halloween Costume Boo-tique grew out of the annual Carnival Creations Bazaar on Frenchmen Street. When Café Brasil closed, both events migrated to the Blue Nile, site of the Great Blue Nile Costume Bust of Mardi Gras 2011.  Threadhead Cultural Foundation stepped in as a nonprofit sponsor and the biannual sales rose from the ashes at the Blue Nile and moved to their new home at the New Orleans Healing Center in 2013.
More than a dozen longtime local favorites will be on hand: Oliver Manhattan, Tracy Thomson, Howlpop, Calamity, Cree McCree, Kate McNee, Liz Blaz, Chloe Rose, Lana Guerra, Sweetwater Vintage, Deesguise, Dana Embree, Alita Edgar, and New Orleans Independent Fashion.
For more info on the Halloween Costume Boo-tique, contact Cree McCree by calling (504) 505-4113.

Celebration in the Oaks to be a drive-through attraction in 2020
Celebration in the Oaks, City Park's annual holiday attraction featuring holiday light displays and more than a million lights hanging from the park's oak trees, will run from Nov. 26 through Jan. 3, 2021. To adapt to coronavirus, the park has made several changes, including that it will be a driving instead of walking experience.
Celebration in the Oaks used to be viewable by car, but the park changed it to pedestrian-only in 2004. The drive is 2.25 miles, and guests will not be allowed to get out of their cars to explore exhibits.
New exhibits include a salute to medical personnel. Displays from past years with a driving option will return, including "Monstro," the whale from Pinocchio and a 15-foot tall waving Santa Claus. Regular attractions include lighted dinosaur figures, a unicorn, a pirate ship in the lagoon, flamingos, a Who Dat tree, scenes of Jackson Square, a musical tribute and more.
Admission will be by timed ticketing, and a limited number of tickets will be available. Tickets for cars and SUVs range from $18.99 to $32.99 for up to eight guests in a vehicle. There also are options for limos and party busses. Hours of operation will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
