NAVY DAY

Navy Day on October 27th salutes all of the military personnel who have served, both past and present, in the United States Navy.
The United States Navy (USN) is the United States Armed Forces’ naval warfare service branch and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy currently stands as the largest, most powerful navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The service engages over 340,000 personnel on active duty and more than 71,000 in the Navy Reserve.
Navy History
Throughout the Revolutionary War, the Navy’s importance grew. Today, the United States maintains 40 naval bases across the country, including the world’s largest Naval Station Norfolk, in Norfolk, Virginia.
Below the sea, submarines became a part of the Navy during World War II. While experiments began in the late 1800s and during the Civil War, they did not join a large part of the Navy inventory until World War II. At that point, subs became necessary for surveillance and rescue, even though they were also armed.
With the advent of the airplane, the Navy became vital stations for the Airforce as well. As a result, the Navy modified ships into floating landing strips. Today, joint Naval and Airbases such as Pearl Harbor-Hickam provided necessary fleets of the sea and air defense.

Theodore Roosevelt and the Navy
Between 1922 and 1972, the Navy celebrated its birthday on October 27th to honor President Theodore Roosevelt’s birth. He elevated the U.S. Navy to a premier fighting force. During his term as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, he built up the power and strength of the U.S. Navy. Roosevelt’s pursuit of the naval aircraft advanced the U.S. Navy. As president, Roosevelt was the first president to submerge in a submarine and also the first to fly. His support of the Navy led the former Secretary of the Navy, John F. Lehman, to say, Theodore Roosevelt “was one of the architects of our modern Navy.”

Happy 245th Birthday to the United States Navy
The National WWII Museum wishes the US Navy a happy 245th birthday while commemorating victory at sea and the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Honor, courage, and commitment have been the core values of US Navy sailors for over 200 years. As we look at the Navy’s victory at sea during World War II, we highlight four sailors stories that are told here at The National WWII Museum.

On October 27, 1945 a representative group of 47 US Navy ships paraded in New York harbor to celebrate Navy Day and the end of the war. They were greeted by US President Harry S. Truman and over five million jubilant Americans.

Cities, birds, and denizens of the deep. Three items which on the surface have nothing in common, yet they were all conventions for naming US warships in the WWII era.

Also be sure to check out some of our favorite online Navy content below.
To celebrate the end of the war and the journey back to the United States, US Navy ships often flew long pennants to commemorate their time overseas.

In 1942, a submarine skipper grew frustrated when a requisition for an essential item was cancelled. His response is still famous in the Navy today.

Ever wondered how to feed hundreds of sailors on a US Navy ship? The Cook Book of the United States Navy has the answer.
The popularity of early voting here is reflected statewide. As of Saturday, a full two days before the end of early voting, more than 761,000 votes had been cast, easily topping the previous record of 531,555 set in 2016.

10 am CT - Danny Barker, live from Memphis 1970

Danny Barker was a friend of WWOZ from the beginning. This is a rare live performance of Danny at his best.

Special Exhibits
Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II: Activated on January 20, 1944, the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the “Ghost Army,” was the first mobile, multimedia, tactical deception unit in US Army history. Consisting of an authorized strength of 82 officers and 1,023 men under the command of Army veteran Colonel Harry L. Reeder, this unique and top-secret unit was capable of simulating two whole divisions—approximately 30,000 men—and used visual, sonic, and radio deception to fool German forces during World War II’s final year. Now, through The National WWII Museum’s newest special exhibit, Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II, visitors can learn the story of the 23rd and their role in Allied victory through featured artifacts such as artwork, uniforms, an inflatable tank, and more.
Remembered Light: Glass Fragments from World War II, the McDonald Windows is a collection of 25 art pieces produced by Atelier Le Roux in Oakland, California, using shards of glass from damaged and destroyed European churches collected during World War II by the late US Army Episcopal chaplain Frederick McDonald. McDonald, who served under General Omar Bradley in the 12th Army Group through war-torn Europe, collected shards of stained glass and other mementos from desecrated sanctuary sites he visited from 1944 to 1945 after he first encountered a church in England destroyed by bombing and was heartbroken by the ruins.

Jeff Duncan - Payton and Brees: The Men Who Built the Greatest Offense in NFL History

Please join us for a "Covid-Safe" book-signing with sports writer Jeff Duncan featuring his new book, PAYTON AND BREES, a rare, behind the scenes look at the Saints over more than 14 seasons

As the city was rebuilding following Hurricane Katrina, Sean Payton arrived in 2006 as a relative unknown, a first-time NFL head coach tasked with resurrecting a New Orleans Saints team that had just finished 3-13. Two months after Payton was hired, the Saints signed a free agent quarterback who was cast aside by the San Diego Chargers: Drew Brees. Together, these two underdogs joined forces and transformed the Saints from laughingstock to juggernaut. Payton's bold play-calling proved the perfect match for Brees, who threw a league-leading and franchise record 4,418 passing yards as the Saints advanced to the NFC championship game. Three seasons later, the Saints were Super Bowl champions. Payton and Brees is the definitive account of how this dynamic duo transformed a team, a city, and the game of football.

Jeff Duncan is a columnist for The Athletic New Orleans and previously covered the Saints for the Times-Picayune. He is the author of Tales from the Saints Sideline and From Bags to Riches

NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY
Don’t be superstitious on National Black Cat Day! October 27th celebrates the beauty of these sleek creatures. The day also seeks to raise awareness about the low adoption rates for black cats.
This time of year, many black cats may decorate many thresholds for Halloween and windows for spooky decor. However, these felines deserve the love and attention just as much as their tabby equivalents. Old notions have given these furry critters a bad reputation. The day is about turning that reputation around.
Their black canine counterparts also face similar adoption problems. So, it’s not all about myth and mystery. However, increasing support for the black feline’s plight is the goal of this companion holiday.

NATIONAL AMERICAN BEER DAY
National American Beer Day raises a glass to the rich American beermaking history and those who savor the continued traditions. Pour your favorite pint with millions who enjoy the storied brews across the nation.
U.S. Brewing History
Brewing beer in America begins long before Europeans arrived since Native Americans brewed beer from various ingredients. They used corn, birch sap, and water to ferment their beverage. When the first colonists arrived in Virginia, they began combining their brewing traditions with the supplies at hand – that included corn, too. Since then, brewing and brewers became a principal occupation in the colonies. Interestingly, the first white child born in Manhattan grew up to be the first brewer born in America.
Today, the brewery established by David G. Yuengling is the oldest producing brewery in the United States. He established the Eagle Brewery in 1829. Amazingly, the brewery remains in the family to this day.

Unlike most other breweries of the time, the Eagle Brewery survived Prohibition. In fact, very few survived. Those that did survive tried various legal and illegal tactics. In Eagle Brewery’s case, they reduced their alcohol content to within the legal limit. They also branched out. Ice cream, anyone? Yes, the Yuengling’s started a dairy. Others turned their beermaking supplies into other products. When prohibition lifted, they returned to full-fledged beermaking.
Despite these efforts, nearly every brewer existing before prohibition dissolved. Out of just over 1,300 brewers, only about 100 remained after prohibition. Today, we recognize the names of many of those surviving breweries.
The skill of a brewer requires years of practice in the trade. It’s revered even. In Milwaukee, their professional baseball team is named after the brewer. In St. Louis and Denver, the stadiums are named after prominent brewers.
More than 2,100 breweries are manufacturing beer in the United States. They range in size from industry giants to brewpubs and microbreweries.

Blood pouring into the streets, scores of hacked limbs strewn about a stately mansion, a Sultan’s brother buried alive in the garden. Wild parties, foreign intrigue, mass murder, brutal revenge! Sex! Pirates! And in the aftermath, the macabre haunting of one of the French Quarter’s most venerable buildings. Let us journey back nearly three centuries, for that is when our limb-lopping tale begins.

A startling headline greeted New Orleanians in the final days of the 19th century: “Real Ghost Story: The Old Carrollton Jail is Said to be Haunted.” The ghostly tales didn’t waft out of the drunk tank nor were they screamed from a padded cell; The witnesses to these otherworldly events were “nine peculiarly levelheaded and unimaginative men – members of the police force.” Today, the courthouse still stands empty while behind it, weeds break through the cracked concrete playground where the courtyard gallows once stood, surrounded by the brick walls of the prison that evil could not escape.

DAILY CALENDAR
OnlineWire - New Orleans virtual gig calendar
Virtual gig listings from New Orleans musicians, so you can support and enjoy live, local music. Without leaving home.

While normal gigs are not being held during the pandemic, we'll be updating the WWOZ OnlineWire, a calendar of virtual gigs, in the place of the regular WWOZ Livewire. These are happening on a variety of platforms-- mostly social media. We're sharing links when and where we can.

Many musicians are offering digital "tip jars" via Venmo or other payment systems during these sets. Stay in and support some live, local music! As always, listings are subject to change.

PROVIDED PHOTO BY AUDOIN DE VERGNETTE
The Consulate General of France in Louisiana will display an outdoor exhibition of new works by New Orleans photographer David Spielman capturing local life amid the coronavirus pandemic. "New Orleans: Tested Again" is a series of black and white photos showing New Orleanians going about daily life, such as grocery shopping, attending church and returning to schools.
Inspired by exhibitions displayed on the fences of Paris' Luxembourg Gardens, "New Orleans: Tested Again" will be attached to the fences of the Consulate General at 2406 Prytania St. The photos will be on display through Nov. 23.
"The history of France and New Orleans is long, rich and extremely important," a short exhibit statement says. "For more than 300 years, in good and bad times, we have stood together. During this worldwide pandemic we are once again side by side. Together we will thrive."

October 28th: The Hot Club of New Orleans
The Hot Club of New Orleans have challenged themselves with an awesome task: take the swing era music of Duke Ellington, Django Reinhardt, and Stephan Grappelli (among others), retain the classic groove, avoid sounding like a museum piece and then infuse it with their own modern sensibilities. Well, the first thing is these guys can all swing like mad. And they're not a bunch of stuffy old "moldy figs." But they do love this music-you can tell in their passionately delivered solos and the sly vocal readings. And, with two guitar players and an upright bass, they deliver the goods you'd expect from one of the swingingest drummers in New Orleans-but in keeping with the classic format of this music, there is actually no drummer…
The Hot Club of New Orleans excels at generating that warm, swinging drive that Django Reinhardt was famous for and at the same time transcends the idiom by eschewing blind obedience to stylistic conventions;
in other words the solos are modern, kids. They play a somewhat laid-back yet exuberant groove, typical of New Orleans; yet they are so tight and swinging, their solos so driving, at times they seem almost superhuman.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been a mainstay in the New Orleans music scene since the early 1960s. This new record confirms what fans have known for years: Walter “Wolfman Washington has soul to go along with that fire.

A circus experience
to remember!
I was lucky enough to attend the Venardos Circus last year with my family, and it was quite possibly the most fun circus we’ve ever seen. The small tent was overflowing with laughter and awe.
From the moment we arrived the clowns were engaging with the families as they walked up, even teaching my son how to juggle!
With every seat in the round being so close to the stage, you feel like you are part of the show. My husband even got pulled up on stage for a fun act with the clown... and my boys were almost on the ground laughing!
While the live and in-person circus experience is on hold for right now, the fun and excitement of the Venardos Circus is coming right into your living rooms this Halloween with a Spooktacular Livestream, and I can't wait to get in on the fun!

Created by former Ringling Bros. Ringmaster Kevin Venardos (veh-NARR-dos), the Venardos Circus wraps world-class animal-free circus acts into a Broadway Musical-style format dubbed “The American Circus with the heart of a Broadway Show.” This unique show was on tour, traveling the United States when COVID-19 brought live, in-person events to a halt.
But the show must go on ... and now Venardos is pleased to bring the circus straight to you in the safety and comfort of your home.

Make this a Halloween weekend you won't forget and livestream the Venardos Circus Spooky Spectacular Halloween for up to 35% off!

Celebration in the Oaks to be a drive-through attraction in 2020
Celebration in the Oaks, City Park's annual holiday attraction featuring holiday light displays and more than a million lights hanging from the park's oak trees, will run from Nov. 26 through Jan. 3, 2021. To adapt to coronavirus, the park has made several changes, including that it will be a driving instead of walking experience.
Celebration in the Oaks used to be viewable by car, but the park changed it to pedestrian-only in 2004. The drive is 2.25 miles, and guests will not be allowed to get out of their cars to explore exhibits.
New exhibits include a salute to medical personnel. Displays from past years with a driving option will return, including "Monstro," the whale from Pinocchio and a 15-foot tall waving Santa Claus. Regular attractions include lighted dinosaur figures, a unicorn, a pirate ship in the lagoon, flamingos, a Who Dat tree, scenes of Jackson Square, a musical tribute and more.
Admission will be by timed ticketing, and a limited number of tickets will be available. Tickets for cars and SUVs range from $18.99 to $32.99 for up to eight guests in a vehicle. There also are options for limos and party busses. Hours of operation will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
