October is
Healthy Lung Month

New Orleans, La., –Healthy Lung Month (October)—a month set aside for lung health awareness—is recognized by the American Lung Association (ALA) and several health advocacy organizations across the US. It is designed to help educate the public about the importance of protecting their lungs against general neglect, bronchitis, mold, air pollution, and smoking.

The Smoking Cessation Trust is encouraging Louisiana smokers to take this opportunity, especially as we continue to navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, to “love your lungs” by quitting cigarettes and encouraging friends and family members to quit, as well.
Evidence has shown that smokers are likely to be more vulnerable to COVID-19, as they may also already have lung disease or reduced lung capacity which would greatly increase risk of serious illness.

“If infected by COVID-19, smokers can significantly spread the virus in the community,” says Juan J. Gershanik, MD, president, Orleans Parish Medical Society (OPMS) and medical director of West Jefferson Medical Center’s NICU. “That is why, in addition to wearing a face mask, which decreases the chances of the spread, smokers are strongly encouraged to quit.”

Lung disease affects an astounding number of Americans. More than 35 million Americans live with a chronic lung disease like asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis—and smoking does not help.

“We know it’s hard to quit cigarettes,” says Mike Rogers, CEO of the Smoking Cessation Trust Management Services. “That’s why we’re taking the opportunity of Healthy Lung Month, and related observances such as the upcoming Great American Smokeout on Thursday, Nov. 19, to remind people of the damaging effects of smoking and to encourage them to protect their lungs from nicotine and other carcinogens and general pollutants. We want everyone, especially as we continue to battle COVID-19, to try their best to quit and to lead healthier lives.”

Here are a few tips from the American Lung Association to help keep your lungs healthy:

Don't Smoke
Cigarette smoking is the major cause of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Cigarette smoke can narrow the air passages and make breathing more difficult. It causes chronic inflammation, or swelling in the lung, which can lead to chronic bronchitis. Over time cigarette smoke destroys lung tissue and may trigger changes that grow into cancer. If you smoke, it's never too late to benefit from quitting. The American Lung Association can help whenever you are ready.

Prevent Infection
A cold or other respiratory infection can sometimes become profoundly serious. There are several things you can do to protect yourself:
·         Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based cleaners are a good substitute if you cannot wash.
·         Avoids crowds during the cold and flu season.
·         Good oral hygiene can protect you from the germs in your mouth leading to infections. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and see your dentist at least every six months.
·         Get vaccinated every year against influenza. Talk to your healthcare provider to find out if the pneumonia vaccine is right for you.
·         If you get sick, keep it to yourself! Protect the people around you, including your loved ones, by keeping your distance. Stay home from work or school until you are feeling better.

Minimize Exposure to Outdoor Air Pollution
The air quality outside can vary from day to day and sometimes is unhealthy to breathe. Knowing how outdoor air pollution affects your health and useful strategies to minimize prolonged exposure can help keep you and your family well. Climate change and natural disasters can also directly impact lung health.

Get Regular Healthcare
Regular check-ups help prevent diseases, even when you are feeling well. This is especially true for lung disease, which sometimes goes undetected until it is serious. During a check-up, your healthcare provider will listen to your breathing and listen to your concerns. If you need health insurance, learn more about your options.

Exercise
Whether you are young or old, slender, or large, able-bodied, or living with a chronic illness or disability, being physically active can help keep your lungs healthy. Learn more about how exercise can strengthen your lungs.

“We are committed to helping Louisiana smokers quit with the help of the Trust’s free products and services, and hope that many will decide that October’s ‘Healthy Lung Month’ will be an ideal time to begin their journey to quitting. With two years left to this free cessation program, we also encourage our members, and all smokers across Louisiana, to quit nicotine in all its many forms,” added Rogers.

Office of Business & External Services to
Launch Satellite Services for Residents
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today announced the launch of the newly formed Office of Business & External Services (OBES) satellite program for residents. As part of a gradual rollout, OBES will provide residents an opportunity to do business with City Hall at select New Orleans Public Library locations.

“Providing residents more convenient access to City services is the definition of meeting people where they are. This is why we formed the Office of Business and External Services. We are committed to making it easier for residents to do business with the City, especially at a time when we are trying to fuel our economic recovery in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

First up, the Rosa Keller Library in Broadmoor will provide representatives from the seven agencies under OBES:
  • Safety & Permits
  • Code Enforcement
  • Workforce Development
  • Economic Development
  • City Planning Commission
  • Historic District Landmarks Commission
  • Vieux Carré Commission

Representatives from each agency will be able to provide support for residents, including helping them access the City website, NOLA.gov, in order to more efficiently use City services. The staff available will be assisting with questions and applications, often in real time or with follow-up help. The Rosa Keller Library OBES Satellite location (4300 S Broad Ave.) will operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the month of October, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., starting this Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020. Additional hours may be added as needed.

Please remember that adherence to all City of New Orleans Health Department guidelines, including mask wearing, is required. Learn more about Phase 3 including guidelines at NOLA Ready here.

The City is especially grateful for the assistance from the Broadmoor Improvement Association and NOPL. For additional information, please email [email protected].
Residents are encouraged to visit this location to interact with staff, learn about City services, make applications for renovation projects, get assistance to open businesses, etc.

As the rollout progresses, the City plans to have representatives on-site at the East New Orleans Regional Library and the Algiers Regional Library. Dates and hours of operation for the additional sites will be provided in advance so residents can plan ahead, and access the library’s free parking.

“The Mayor recognizes that our residents are our primary customers, and that we must provide a best-in-class user experience. To achieve that, we must first make City services easily accessible to all residents and focus on streamlining the processes and systems we have in place,” said Peter Bowen, Deputy CAO for OBES. “Our libraries serve as cornerstones of our neighborhoods, providing valuable resources to residents, and we’re excited to activate our Land Use, Economic and Workforce Development services at these facilities.”

Hurricane Delta strengthens to Cat 2 storm, expected to reach Cat 4 in Gulf
City of New Orleans Prepares for Tropical Storm Delta
NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is monitoring Tropical Storm Delta, which is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 Hurricane and make landfall as a Category 2 along the northern Gulf of Mexico late this week.

There is growing confidence in the forecast track, which includes the New Orleans Metro area. Sustained tropical storm force winds (more than 35 mph), storm surge outside of the levee system, and heavy rain are possible with this system.

In preparation, residents are encouraged to prepare their properties and gather emergency supplies, including food, water, and medications, for at least three days. Those who might need extra help during a storm due to age, ability, or medical needs should sign up for the City’s Special Needs Registry. To register, call 3-1-1 or go to specialneeds.nola.gov

The City will also provide text updates to residents. To sign up, text DELTA to 888777 (subscribers who received texts for Beta, Sally, Laura, Marco, or Cristobal will automatically be subscribed).

Public Safety Preparations
The City's Emergency Operations Center, which has been continuously activated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, will now transition into a tropical storm response with liaisons from public safety, infrastructure, transportation, and human service agencies, as well as State and Federal partners.

The New Orleans Health Department (NOHD) is communicating with healthcare partners to ensure they are informed and prepared for tropical weather. NOHD remains on standby for sheltering operations should the need arise.

The New Orleans Police Department, New Orleans Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services have emergency personnel ready to respond as necessary. High water vehicles, boats, and barricades are being strategically deployed in areas prone to flooding. The Orleans Parish Communication District is prepared to meet the emergency communications needs of New Orleans residents during this tropical weather event.

Service Impacts
City Hall, NORD, and the New Orleans Public Library are monitoring the storm and will announce any impacts to services as warranted.

NOLA Public Schools continues to monitor Tropical Storm Delta, and schools are taking actions to prepare their organizations and facilities for potential impacts.

Infrastructure Preparations
The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans has all 99 drainage pumps available for service. One constant duty pump, located at Drainage Pump Station 7 near City Park, is out of service. But these are smaller units used to regulate groundwater in canals and are not large enough to be critical during a flood fight. Turbines 1, 4 and 6 are available for service, as well as all five Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) generators and all five frequency changers. Turbine 3 is out of service pending a repair. Additionally, a new feeder from Turbine 6 to the Carrollton Frequency Changer Facility is now in place and operational, giving the system added power reliability.

As they do year-round, Department of Public Works crews are working to clean catch basins, and asphalt crews are transitioning from asphalt-related work to clearing debris from in front of catch basins. Inspectors and construction managers will review roadwork construction sites to ensure stockpiles are moved from next to catch basins and all loose materials tied down or removed from the job site.

The Department of Parks and Parkways is closely monitoring the potential for tropical weather and has crews are ready to respond to downed trees and branches if necessary. Residents are reminded to call 311 if you have a downed tree or large branches and to call Entergy New Orleans for downed power lines involving trees.

Entergy’s storm team is prepared to restore power and gas services safely and quickly to customers should outages occur. In addition, the company will move equipment from low-lying areas that could see high water to higher ground and ensure flood protections are in place. High-water vehicles and drones are being secured should they be needed during any restoration efforts. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, crews will continue to practice social distancing while in the field, and Entergy asks that customers do the same. For the safety of crews and customers, please stay away from work zones. If there is a need to report a service problem, customers should call 1-800-ENTERGY.

Transportation
The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority continues to monitor Tropical Storm Delta. The agency will maintain service across all modes as long as weather conditions allow to do safely. For the latest information on storm impacts, visit www.RTAforward.org, call the Rideline at (504) 248-3900 or follow @NewOrleansRTA on social media.
Bananas Foster Beignets

Makes About 30
Ingredients
  • 6 tablespoons warm water (105° to 110°)
  • 1½ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ cup whole buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ teaspoon rum extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting
  • Bananas Foster Sauce (recipe follows), to serve
Bananas Foster Sauce
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ⅔ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup dark rum
  • 4 large bananas, sliced crosswise ¼ inch thick
Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, stir together 6 tablespoons warm water and yeast. Let stand until foamy, 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, stir together flour, granulated sugar, salt, cinnamon, and baking soda. Add yeast mixture, buttermilk, egg, butter, and rum extract, and beat at low speed just until a dough forms. Switch to the dough hook attachment, and beat at low speed until dough is smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. (Dough should stick to bottom of bowl but not sides.)
  3. Spray a large bowl with cooking spray. Place dough in bowl, turning to grease top. Cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm, draft-free place (75°) until doubled in size, 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  4. In a large Dutch oven, pour oil to a depth of 3 inches, and heat over medium heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 350°.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to ¼-inch thickness. Using a sharp knife, cut dough into 2-inch squares. (Do not reroll.)
  6. Fry dough in batches until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Let drain on paper towels. Dust confectioners’ sugar onto beignets. Serve warm with Bananas Foster Sauce.
Bananas Foster Sauce
  1. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar and cinnamon, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat; slowly stir in rum. Return to heat; cook until mixture is slightly thickened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add banana slices, and cook for 1 minute. Use immediately.

We’re Back!  Johnny’s Po Boys returns the Quarter!

The DeGrusha Family continues the tradition of serving New Orleans' signature sandwich at Johnny's Po-Boys
From Bank Presidents to Buggy Drivers, they have all awaited the return of French Quarter staple - Johnny’s Po-Boys at 511 St. Louis Street. On Friday, Lori Beth De Grusha, the third-generation, will once stand behind the cash register waiting to take an order from every customer that enters. Many will come to talk with the long-term staff and order their favorite item on the menu – just like when life was “normal”.
Whether its alligator sausage, roast beef, fried shrimp or oysters, giant onion rings - or maybe chicken parmesan, hot sausage, meatballs, pastrami or pork chops – your order come quickly and with a smile you won’t forget.

There are stories to the origin of the po-boy (or poor boy) sandwich, including one from 1929-30 about a New Orleans restaurant that created it with fried potatoes inside the French bread to feed workers who couldn’t afford to eat.
DeGrusha shares a tip on one of the top menu items – the Roast Beef sandwich. The sheer amount of roast beef stacked on the French bread also makes it different. Johnny’s has the reputation for not skimping on the ingredients, a reason it has been in business for 65 years.

De Grusha’s grandfather opened Johnny’s in 1950. At the beginning customers would submit their orders and put the money in the cash register (and even make their own change). The business grew as the shop made a name for the amazing sandwiches. Johnny also gained a reputation for his spirit. He was different from the norm then – he served whites and blacks, and treated everyone equally. Lori Beth will tell the story of a grandfather who could not be bullied or threatened by that stand, he loved everyone.
Johnny worked in the restaurant nearly until his death in 1999. He never slowed down and he worked side by side with his dedicated staff. Then Lori Beth’s father, also named Johnny, took over the business with his brothers. Lori Beth took over Johnny’s with her two uncles when her dad passed in 2012.
Johnny’s has weathered many storms including Katrina, a kitchen fire, and now a pandemic. But like a Po Boy held in the claw of a Phoenix
As a result of the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and public health and safety restrictions on businesses, the City of New Orleans is creating an Outdoor Dining grant program to support New Orleans’ restaurant and bar industry to safely expand their outdoor dining options. The program, designed by the City of New Orleans, will be administered by the New Orleans Business Alliance (NOLABA).
The City of New Orleans is committing $100,000 for the initial round of Outdoor Dining grants, with 35% of all grant funds have been earmarked for businesses owned by people of color or women, in the first four weeks of the program. Restaurants will be able to apply for $2,000 grants meant to assist in expanding their outdoor seating areas, including sidewalk cafés and off-street parking lot dining areas. The City of New Orleans anticipates supporting approximately fifty restaurants through the grant program.
Restaurants and bars are the backbones of the New Orleans community and culture, and national trends suggest that half of all restaurants will not survive the pandemic. The Outdoor Dining Grant Program will support restaurants and bars to invest in outdoor dining areas and enable them to expand their business operations.
This program is a part of Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s efforts to reimagine public spaces in order to support the City’s businesses. These efforts are designed to both ensure the safety of residents and workers and create a more vibrant streetscape. The Outdoor Dining grant is the first part of a multiphase effort to expand dining options in public rights-of-way.
The City recognizes that these funds will only support a limited number of restaurants, and we will continue advocating for resources and work to support our restaurant and business community in every way we can.

This Morbid Museum In New Orleans Is Not For The Faint Of Heart
Have you ever explored the Museum of Death in New Orleans? It’s a unique exploration of one of the most fascinating and taboo topics in our culture! Here’s the inside scoop on this unique museum…that is definitely not for the faint of heart.

If you are looking for a museum that is both creepy and bizarre, look no further than the Museum of Death in New Orleans.

It's found in the French Quarter, a 227 Dauphine St. and includes an array of unique oddities.
It costs $15 to enter, and inside you will find a full array of unique displays.

The museum includes body bags, coffins, and skull collections from a variety of sources.

There are also unique mortician apparatuses and some evidence of cannibalism.

Apparently, teeth are not good to eat!
There are also many detailed displays on infamous serial killers throughout the world's history.

Those displays include letters and artworks from these individuals.
The part that amazed me the most when I visited were the graphic car accident photos.

They were very unique and offered a whole new perspective on those difficult events.
So if you're in the area and looking for an interesting way to spend an afternoon, consider visiting this creepy place.

We all know that New Orleans is one of the most interesting cities in the world when it comes to our architectural history. In 1852, artists B.F. Smith, Jr. and J.W. Hill produced this skyline view from the top of St. Patrick's Church, the top of which may be seen at the bottom of this image.
On the left is the First Presbyterian Church and directly above that is City Hall (Gallier Hall), with Lafayette Square in front. The impressive white dome of the St. Charles Hotel is just left of center. This was perhaps the first building someone traveling to New Orleans would see as their steamer approached the city, looming high above the city.
Just above the portion of St. Patrick's is the dome of the Odd Fellow's Hall. Above that near the center of the image is the domes roof of the St. Louis Hotel, with the spire of the newly renovated St. Louis Cathedral just beyond on the right.
The hustle and bustle of the port along the Mississippi River is depicted on the far right. The horizon illustrates the rural nature of the area outside of the immediate city.

The Consulate General of France in Louisiana will display an outdoor exhibition of new works by New Orleans photographer David Spielman capturing local life amid the coronavirus pandemic. "New Orleans: Tested Again" is a series of black and white photos showing New Orleanians going about daily life, such as grocery shopping, attending church and returning to schools.
Inspired by exhibitions displayed on the fences of Paris' Luxembourg Gardens, "New Orleans: Tested Again" will be attached to the fences of the Consulate General at 2406 Prytania St. The photos will be on display through Nov. 23.
"The history of France and New Orleans is long, rich and extremely important," a short exhibit statement says. "For more than 300 years, in good and bad times, we have stood together. During this worldwide pandemic we are once again side by side. Together we will thrive."

Walter 'Wolfman' Washington & The Roadmasters
Hosted by d.b.a. New Orleans and StageIt
Every Wednesday Streaming LIVE on StageIt from d.b.a in New Orleans.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been a mainstay in the New Orleans music scene since the early 1960s. He cut his teeth backing up some of the best singers and performers in New Orleans history including Lee Dorsey, Johnny Adams, and Irma Thomas before putting together his long time band The Roadmasters, who have been burning down and burning up local and national stages since their first gigs in the 1980s. This new record confirms what fans have known for years: Walter “Wolfman Washington has soul to go along with that fire.

Like many African-American musicians in the South, Washington started singing in school and the church. He had just hit double digits when he formed an acapella spirituals group in his neighborhood called the True Love and Gospel Singers. One Sunday they went on the local gospel show on WBOK to sing, and Washington noticed the guitar player in the studio who was playing behind them. “I just sat there and watched him,” Washington recalls, “He was playing with all his fingers.” When Washington got home he made his own guitar from a cigar box, rubber bands, and a clothes hanger. One of his uncles saw this and gave him a real guitar, and Washington started practicing. His dad supported his music, and took him to see a musician he knew across the river from New Orleans, and those two played his first gig in Gretna, Louisiana. Even though his parents were not musicians, “I had lots of uncles who played guitar. Guitar Slim and Lightnin' Slim were my uncles. And Ernie K-Doe – the renowned New Orleans performer and singer of international hit “Mother in Law” - was his cousin.
We are thrilled to have Walter return to the d.b.a. stage where he & the Roadmasters have been performing every Wednesday since 2006. He is a New Orleans legend.

Special Exhibits
Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II: Activated on January 20, 1944, the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the “Ghost Army,” was the first mobile, multimedia, tactical deception unit in US Army history. Consisting of an authorized strength of 82 officers and 1,023 men under the command of Army veteran Colonel Harry L. Reeder, this unique and top-secret unit was capable of simulating two whole divisions—approximately 30,000 men—and used visual, sonic, and radio deception to fool German forces during World War II’s final year. Now, through The National WWII Museum’s newest special exhibit, Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II, visitors can learn the story of the 23rd and their role in Allied victory through featured artifacts such as artwork, uniforms, an inflatable tank, and more.
Remembered Light: Glass Fragments from World War II, the McDonald Windows is a collection of 25 art pieces produced by Atelier Le Roux in Oakland, California, using shards of glass from damaged and destroyed European churches collected during World War II by the late US Army Episcopal chaplain Frederick McDonald. McDonald, who served under General Omar Bradley in the 12th Army Group through war-torn Europe, collected shards of stained glass and other mementos from desecrated sanctuary sites he visited from 1944 to 1945 after he first encountered a church in England destroyed by bombing and was heartbroken by the ruins.

St. Anna’s Church kicks off “Tip Jar” Music series to help local musicians survive COVID pandemic shut down
Thursday, 6 p.m. Live-stream concerts provide safe, open place for local artists to get income and promote the city’s music legacy

Every Thursday at 6 p.m., individuals can tune into the facebook page for St. Anna’s Episcopal Church and enjoy New Orleans musicians do their thing in the hopes you will contribute to their individual online “tip jar” to help support their art, announced the Very Reverend William H. Terry, Rector, St. Anna’s Episcopal Church.
“St. Anna’s has a history of supporting New Orleans musicians, especially since 2005 and the levee failure following Hurricane Katrina,” said Fr. Bill. “We provide a venue for them to play as well as offer them food and other services as The Mission to Musicians.”

“Once again, New Orleans musicians are hard pressed to produce income because of the COVID pandemic and closure of music venues. Our church offers use of our audio-visual and electronic equipment, as well as our space, to help them bring in some income through their own online tip jar,” said Fr. Bill.
Event sponsors are also sought to help every performer at least receive a baseline payment of $100 to $500 per gig, depending on the size of the music group. The program is made possible with the help of Jack Craft, an artist with Sweet Crude, and St. Anna’s Place staff.
 Additional upcoming performances include:

  • Singer/songwriter Michael Doussan on Oct. 8

  • ·      And Indie bands Alexis and the Samurai and Free Feral on Oct. 15 and 22 respectively.

UNDETERRED BY THE PANDEMIC, 2020 CRESCENT CITY CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
TO BROADCAST FOUR FREE PUBLIC CONCERTS OCT. 9-11

The Crescent City Chamber Music Festival (CCMF) will not let Covid-19 stand in the way of its 5th anniversary performances this year. CCCMF will go on as planned with live performances that will be streamed to audiences from event spaces in New Orleans from October 2 to October 11, 2020.

This year’s Festival is titled "In the Darkest Night Shines the Brightest Light," and features four unique, virtual programs broadcast live and free to the public on Facebook and YouTube over the ten days of the festival. Once again, Founding Artistic Director and New Orleans native Luke Fleming will bring some of the world’s most talented chamber musicians together for audiences in New Orleans, and now, online anywhere in the world. Audiences will be treated to performances from the world-renowned classical musicians of the Manhattan Chamber Players, a collective of New York-based musicians who have delivered compelling performances of the most moving pieces that the chamber repertoire has to offer year-after-year at CCCMF.

In addition to the 12 stellar classical musicians bringing live chamber music to New Orleans this October, this year’s festival features Andrea Casarrubios, a prominent cellist praised by the likes of the New York Times, who will perform on all four concerts and also debut brand new material written specifically for this year’s festival.

“The pandemic forced us to reimagine the Crescent City Chamber Music Festival in a way that musicians and audience members can enjoy the performances in a safe and socially responsible way,” said Luke Fleming. “Virtual audiences will be treated to one-of-a-kind concerts held in four wonderful spaces across the city of New Orleans, viewable on platforms like Facebook Live and YouTube Streaming.

Should it be deemed safe by local government, the 2020 CCCMF may allow limited, socially distanced, masked seating on a first-come first-served basis, but this has yet to be confirmed. Notice will be given of this possibility at least two weeks before the festival begins,” Fleming said.

Community outreach is an important part of the festival’s mission. Since its inception, festival musicians have performed privately for audiences at nursing homes, hospitals, schools, homeless shelters, and other helping organizations across the Greater New Orleans area. This year, the festival will stream to community members of New Orleans via Zoom, Facetime, and Skype — providing a meaningful and safe online concert experience on a one-on-one basis to residents of nursing homes, retirement communities, and hospitals, as well as in educational spaces.

Cutting Edge REDUX - Music Business Sessions

Oct 14, 2020, 2:00 PM - Oct 17, 2020, 5:00 PM (your local time)
New Orleans: The Cutting Edge REDUX, virtual conference will address the pandemic's impact on the global music industry's two major income streams, "Live Music" and "Recorded Music," October 14 – 17, 2020.
Essentially the industry is large, and the problems caused by the pandemic are immense. As such, the Cutting Edge REDUX will attempt to reduce the magnitude of the problem to the burning music industry questions, “What the Hell are we going to do for the next 18 months?” ‘Where should I invest my time to have my best music future?”

We will hear from some of the music industry's most essential influencers during the Cutting Edge REDUX sessions. These industry experts, entertainment attorneys, and artists have the proven knowledge needed to assess the global pandemic's impact and consequences on musicians and music businesses. They will give answers and recommend strategies to attendees.

An outline of the pandemic effects on the music industry addressed during the Cutting Edge REDUX follows below.

Music industry areas struggling from income lost:
● Booking and touring - vastly fewer gigs

● Recording and distribution - delayed CD releases

● How and where to license music
Other effects show the compassion of the industry:

● Public-private support – funding to artists and crews

● Public sector funding – Governments and public agencies
The music industry has embraced new ways to make money, 'leaning into' the challenge, seeing an opportunity, and creating action:

● Livestreaming – larger audiences, a pandemic bounce in audience availability

● Sharing the streaming fees with the artists

● Selling advertisements to a streaming event

● Establishing a payment method for and during Livestream performances
Long-term gains & industry realities

● Changing relationships with label-artists, songwriters and recording engineers

● The growth of third-party platforms in shaping music distribution, discovery and
consumer behavior

Celebration in the Oaks to be a drive-through attraction in 2020
Celebration in the Oaks, City Park's annual holiday attraction featuring holiday light displays and more than a million lights hanging from the park's oak trees, will run from Nov. 26 through Jan. 3, 2021. To adapt to coronavirus, the park has made several changes, including that it will be a driving instead of walking experience.
Celebration in the Oaks used to be viewable by car, but the park changed it to pedestrian-only in 2004. The drive is 2.25 miles, and guests will not be allowed to get out of their cars to explore exhibits.
New exhibits include a salute to medical personnel. Displays from past years with a driving option will return, including "Monstro," the whale from Pinocchio and a 15-foot tall waving Santa Claus. Regular attractions include lighted dinosaur figures, a unicorn, a pirate ship in the lagoon, flamingos, a Who Dat tree, scenes of Jackson Square, a musical tribute and more.
Admission will be by timed ticketing, and a limited number of tickets will be available. Tickets for cars and SUVs range from $18.99 to $32.99 for up to eight guests in a vehicle. There also are options for limos and party busses. Hours of operation will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
