Last Day

A yearly campaign that aims to boost New Orleans restaurants during their slowest months is returning this year with some changes.
Coolinary runs through Sept. 15. As in previous years, it offers special two- and three-course lunch menus for $20 or less and three-course dinner and brunch menus for $39 or less at a variety of restaurants across the city.
This year the campaign has opened participation to include delivery and take-out options, as well as counter service restaurants. Many restaurants have pivoted to these services as the COVID-19 pandemic lengthens.
“Our beloved restaurant community has been severely impacted by the pandemic crisis that began during their busiest season and the Coolinary campaign is a wonderful opportunity for us all to contribute to their success.” said Stephen Perry, president and CEO of New Orleans & Company. “The addition of take-out and delivery to the program will help our residents support these establishments in whatever way they feel most comfortable. We hope this is a time where we can rediscover New Orleans’ authentic spirit and fall in love with our hometown again.”

This crafty couple is here to save Halloween from the coronavirus pandemic
Parents Create DIY ‘Candy Slide’ For Safe Trick-Or-Treating
All it takes to make this slide is a variety of PVC pipe and connectors, and some paint and items to decorate it. Seriously. That’s it.
YouTube
The couple in the video used a bunch of different sized pipes and connectors to create a base for their slide, which is handy. But TBH, you could prop it up on anything, so this step probably isn’t even necessary. The important thing is to have a 4-inch pipe that’s at least seven feet long, to create the Halloween candy slide itself.
YouTube

After putting all the pipe pieces together, they spray painted it black to help get those spooky Halloween vibes.
YouTube
And then they added gauze that they had stained and torn up a little bit, so it looked like spooky mummy wrapping. It is Halloween season, after all. The scarier you can make this thing, the better.
YouTube

The last step was attaching a skeleton to the end to up the spook factor even more. But that’s totally optional. This project is totally customizable, so you can decorate it however you want to fit your own Halloween vibes.
YouTube
The end result? A slide that absolutely ups your Halloween decor game, while also giving you a way to give candy to trick-or-treaters who stay a safe six-feet away. And the fact that trick-or-treating can now go on, pandemic or not, has us feeling the true spirit of the season.

These weather events are disruptive to say the least - between the media hype, the Katrina PTSD (not to mention COVID fears and political turmoil!) it's hard to stay calm and reasonable. Frantic phone calls from our families who've been listening to the national news add to the stress - it's hard to make decisions about what to do.

To maintain my sanity, I don't listen to any media outlets because even our local news can tend to exaggerate the risk. Yes we need to stay alert (although that 4:30am blast in my air pods on Sunday morning almost gave me a heart attack!) but also be aware of what is really happening out there.
I religiously use 2 apps in times like these (NOAA Radar Pro & NHC Hurricane Tracker) to keep me informed and make decisions on the shop and my home.

That being said, from my last weather update we are pretty much in the clear but we could have some wind and rain and inconvenient power outages. So I figured litre bottles of wine might be the perfect accompaniment to our crazy mixed up lives right now! Plus we've been getting such great quality wines lately in litres, what's not to love?? A chillable Italian Barbera, an Austrian Zweigelt rosé and a German Feinherb Riesling (ever so slightly off dry) complete the 3 pack - If you are interested, call us at 504 304 0635 to reserve yours and/or add it to your pick up or delivery order for tomorrow! The package of wines is $50 and change plus tax with the 3 pack discount.

This Week at Swirl Wine Bar

Cellario E Rosso (organic, native yeasts, low sulfites) - 100% Barbera; Fausto and Cinzia Cellario are 3rd generation winemakers in the village of Carru` on the western outskirts of the Langhe. The family believes in only working with local, indigenous Piemontese grape varieties and fiercely defends local winemaking traditions both in the vineyard work and the cellar practices. This Barbera is hand-harvested into small bins, they use spontaneous fermentation with ten days maceration the aged in 100hl cement tanks for one year. Bottled with minimal sulphur (~10ppm) and without sterile filtering or fining. Fresh berries and spices, soft tannin, thyme and foresty notes all transport you to a vineyard in Italy. Beautiful and layered – you’ll be amazed at how fast this liter bottle disappears!

Brunn Blauer Zweigelt Rosé  (sustainable, native yeasts) - 100% Blauer Zweiglet; Just north of the Danube, in Kamptal, winemaker Karl Steinschaden and his family make this delightful wine from all estate grown, hand harvested grapes.  Light and playful with strawberry and raspberry fruit flavors, a little floral hint, and nice texture. A SUPER bargain!

Brand Riesling Feinherb  (certified organic, working biodynamic, wild yeasts, vegan) Hands down a store favorite with the staff and anyone who loves wines with brightness, purity and zing! Refreshingly juicy flavors of fresh nectarine, strawberry lemonade, lime zest, apricot, and crisp acidity to balance the slight touch of sweetness. Pair with any spicy cuisine or your next backyard BBQ!  Love, love, love...

Coronavirus in Louisiana:

COVID Data in NOLA: 44 new cases Sunday, 15 cases today. There have been no deaths since Friday

The Tally Ho Club was a shooting club, shown here in 1900 in photographs by C. Milo Williams (NOPL). It was so called because before the construction of a railroad stop, members could travel to the club by tally-ho coaches to Bayou Sauvage and then to the club by boat.
The first Tally-Ho Club was located on Bayou Sauvage in 1815 near the junction with Chef Menteur Pass. Once the Mobile & New Orleans Railroad completed its tracks, a new club was erected in 1869. They installed electric lights in 1905 but kept the gas lighting system as a backup.
Gentlemen could shoot trap or skeet to hone their skills before engaging in a duck hunt. Following a morning hunt, members might enjoy a full breakfast and engage in games of chance before setting out for a later afternoon hunt. The fishing in the area is also quite plentiful.
The Tally Ho Club enjoys the distinction of being the oldest hunting and fishing club in America.

Ernest Gravois, owner of the famous “madstone” of Vacherie.

Vacherie is a community located in St. James Parish, Louisiana. It is next to Lac des Allemands, a lake about 50 miles west of New Orleans. The story of the Healing Stone (or Madstone) of Vacherie begins over 200 years ago with the Gravois family, one of the first French families to settle in the Lac des Allemands region.

According to folklore, in the early 19th century, Mrs. Gravois was bitten by a cottonmouth snake while in her garden. Her extremities swelled from the venom and she was quickly on her deathbed. A Native American from the area came to her aid by placing a black stone over the snake puncture wounds. The poison was absorbed by the stone and Mrs. Gravois made a full recovery. The stone was then washed for future medicinal treatments. As the story goes, months later, Mrs. Gravois nursed the very same Native American back to health and was gifted the healing stone in return. It is believed that the stone was a bezoar (a calcified hairball from the stomach of a ruminant animal) from a “ghost”(albino or leucistic whitetail ) deer.

There are more stories of madstones from Texas, to Illinois, to the Appalachia. Tales of the mystical bezoars go back as far as 1596 when Swiss botanist, Gaspard Bauhin wrote, “even today princes and nobles prize the bezoar (madstone) very highly and guard it as their most treasured gem. So great its virtues that many imitations are made.”

As for the Healing Stone of Vacherie, the stone has been in the Gravois family for 200 years and is renowned in the region for healing at least 2,000 people from the treacherous venom of snakes and spiders. Legend states that each time the stone is used, it shrinks in size as it takes in poison.

St. Anna’s Church kicks off “Tip Jar” Music series to help local musicians survive COVID pandemic shut down
Thursday, 6 p.m. Live-stream concerts provide safe, open place for local artists to get income and promote the city’s music legacy

Every Thursday at 6 p.m., individuals can tune into the facebook page for St. Anna’s Episcopal Church and enjoy New Orleans musicians do their thing in the hopes you will contribute to their individual online “tip jar” to help support their art, announced the Very Reverend William H. Terry, Rector, St. Anna’s Episcopal Church.
“St. Anna’s has a history of supporting New Orleans musicians, especially since 2005 and the levee failure following Hurricane Katrina,” said Fr. Bill. “We provide a venue for them to play as well as offer them food and other services as The Mission to Musicians.”

“Once again, New Orleans musicians are hard pressed to produce income because of the COVID pandemic and closure of music venues. Our church offers use of our audio-visual and electronic equipment, as well as our space, to help them bring in some income through their own online tip jar,” said Fr. Bill.
Event sponsors are also sought to help every performer at least receive a baseline payment of $100 to $500 per gig, depending on the size of the music group. The program is made possible with the help of Jack Craft, an artist with Sweet Crude, and St. Anna’s Place staff.
  •          Additional upcoming performances include:
  • ·      Pianist Andre Bohren on Sept. 17
  • ·      The Storyville Stompers on Sept. 24
  • ·      Jazz guitarist and vocalist John Rankin on Oct. 1
  • ·      Singer/songwriter Michael Doussan on Oct. 8
  • ·      And Indie bands Alexis and the Samurai and Free Feral on Oct. 15 and 22 respectively.

Salon de Jeanne d'Arc: Poet David Elliott and Joan of Art
New York Times best-selling children’s author David Elliott discusses the story behind his award-winning book of poetry, "Voices: The Final Hours of Joan of Arc," published in 2019. This free webinar kicks off a 3-part series as the Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc presents its annual Salon conference. Using medieval poetry forms, Elliott’s poems speak with a contemporary voice that not only brings Joan’s story to life but also lends modern insight to timeless struggles of gender and speaking truth to power.

Following Elliott's talk, a few of the artists selected for the 2020 Joan of Art juried exhibition will join us for a panel discussion about their inspiration and experience painting Joan. The show opened Sept. 5 and runs through Sept. 30 at Ariodante Gallery in the New Orleans Arts District.

Help Plant Beautiful Trees in NOLA ~ Treequinox Week
Sustaining Our Urban Landscape (SOUL) is an environmental non-profit dedicated to reducing stormwater runoff, pollution, air temperatures, and subsidence and improving community health through the reforestation of New Orleans. SOUL is reforesting New Orleans, one community at a time.
They are kicking off tree-planting season with Treequinox Week! From September 21st – 25th, they are recruiting community support to plant 1,500 native, water-loving trees throughout New Orleans during the upcoming season.
1,500 trees. It's a big goal, but they know it's doable if everyone joins in.
With your help, SOUL will be able to purchase a second pickup truck and portable toolshed, which will allow SOUL to more effectively bring trees to every neighborhood in New Orleans!
Spread the word! Up to $10,000 in donations during this campaign will be matched by generous private donors, so you and your friends can double your impact by donating this fall. Your donation will go a long way toward planting a beautiful tree canopy in New Orleans.

Tiger Stadium will open the 2020 season at 25% capacity, LSU announces; no tailgating

Three LSU football games are scheduled to be televised on CBS and two more for ESPN networks, the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday.
LSU's season-opener against Mississippi State at Tiger Stadium on Sept. 26 is scheduled to air on CBS network at 2:30 p.m.
Then, LSU's game at Auburn on Oct. 31 is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on CBS.

A more prime-time spot is reserved for the LSU-Alabama rivalry on Nov. 14, which is scheduled to be televised at 5 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.

Meanwhile, LSU’s Oct. 3 game at Vanderbilt will be at 6:30 p.m. on the SEC Network, while its Oct. 17 game at Florida will be a 2:30 p.m. Central time kickoff on ESPN or ESPN2.

Five games are still to be determined in terms of network assignment and kickoff times: Oct. 10 versus Missouri, Oct. 24 versus South Carolina, Nov. 21 at Arkansas, Nov. 28 at Texas A&M and Dec. 5 versus Ole Miss.
2020 LSU FOOTBALL SCHEDULE (All times Central):

Oct. 10: Missouri at LSU, TBA
Oct. 17: LSU at Florida, 2:30 p.m., ESPN or ESPN2

Dec. 5: Ole Miss at LSU, TBA
While state officials are cautiously optimistic there will be some form of limited-capacity fan attendance at LSU games this fall, tailgating before the game may be off-limits to a lot of people.
Tens of thousands of people flood LSU's campus on game days, even if they do not have tickets to the game itself.
"If we can have fans, we are probably going to urge a lot of the people who do not have tickets to the games to not come to the campus,"
For the games themselves, even if they have to limit Tiger Stadium to 30-50 percent of its maximum capacity, they're hopeful that at least some fans will get a seat in Death Valley.
"The wonderful thing about football is that it is outside and we know that this virus does not survive as well outside as it does inside,"
The SEC's 10-game, league-only schedule is set to begin on Sept. 26. LSU will play its standard West Division opponents, and the Tigers added a home game with Missouri and a road game with Vanderbilt to fill out the schedule.
LSU's Week 1 opponent was announced earlier Monday with the Tigers hosting Mississippi State to open its 2020 season on Sept. 26.
Take a look at the full schedule below:
  • WEEK 1: vs. Mississippi State
  • WEEK 2: at Vanderbilt
  • WEEK 3: vs. Missouri
  • WEEK 4: at Florida
  • WEEK 5: vs. South Carolina

UNDETERRED BY THE PANDEMIC, 2020 CRESCENT CITY CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
TO BROADCAST FOUR FREE PUBLIC CONCERTS OCT. 2-11

The Crescent City Chamber Music Festival (CCMF) will not let Covid-19 stand in the way of its 5th anniversary performances this year. CCCMF will go on as planned with live performances that will be streamed to audiences from event spaces in New Orleans from October 2 to October 11, 2020.

This year’s Festival is titled "In the Darkest Night Shines the Brightest Light," and features four unique, virtual programs broadcast live and free to the public on Facebook and YouTube over the ten days of the festival. Once again, Founding Artistic Director and New Orleans native Luke Fleming will bring some of the world’s most talented chamber musicians together for audiences in New Orleans, and now, online anywhere in the world. Audiences will be treated to performances from the world-renowned classical musicians of the Manhattan Chamber Players, a collective of New York-based musicians who have delivered compelling performances of the most moving pieces that the chamber repertoire has to offer year-after-year at CCCMF.

In addition to the 12 stellar classical musicians bringing live chamber music to New Orleans this October, this year’s festival features Andrea Casarrubios, a prominent cellist praised by the likes of the New York Times, who will perform on all four concerts and also debut brand new material written specifically for this year’s festival.

“The pandemic forced us to reimagine the Crescent City Chamber Music Festival in a way that musicians and audience members can enjoy the performances in a safe and socially responsible way,” said Luke Fleming. “Virtual audiences will be treated to one-of-a-kind concerts held in four wonderful spaces across the city of New Orleans, viewable on platforms like Facebook Live and YouTube Streaming.

Should it be deemed safe by local government, the 2020 CCCMF may allow limited, socially distanced, masked seating on a first-come first-served basis, but this has yet to be confirmed. Notice will be given of this possibility at least two weeks before the festival begins,” Fleming said.

Community outreach is an important part of the festival’s mission. Since its inception, festival musicians have performed privately for audiences at nursing homes, hospitals, schools, homeless shelters, and other helping organizations across the Greater New Orleans area. This year, the festival will stream to community members of New Orleans via Zoom, Facetime, and Skype — providing a meaningful and safe online concert experience on a one-on-one basis to residents of nursing homes, retirement communities, and hospitals, as well as in educational spaces.
