NATIONAL READ A BOOK DAY | SEPTEMBER 6
National Read a Book Day is observed annually on September 6th. On August 9th, we all celebrated National Book Lovers Day. While these bookish days may seem similar, National Read a Book Day invites us ALL to grab a book we might enjoy and spend the day reading.
Don’t keep it to yourself. Share the experience! Read aloud either to children or to grandparents. Read to your pets or to your stuffed animals and plants.
Reading improves memory and concentration as well as reduces stress. Older adults who spend time reading show a slower cognitive decline and tend to participate in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetime. Books are an inexpensive entertainment, educational tool and time machine too!
Featured Books
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott – Set during the Civil War, Little Women follows the life of the March family. Loosely based on Alcott’s life, she cast herself as talented the Jo March.
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens – David Copperfield tells the story of a young boy’s life as he struggles to become a writer. From an abusive start and many trials, the author relays the memories of his life.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling – The 7th book in the Harry Potter series brings Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger back to Hogwarts for a final standoff with Voldemort and his Deatheaters.
Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George – This is the story of nine-year-old Miyax and her transition from an Inuit culture to an American one in San Francisco.
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls – Loved by generations, this classic story tells of the bond between a boy and his dog in the Ozarks.
As Brave As You by Jason Reynolds – Set during a summer visit with grandparents, a young boy learns from his mistakes and about the imperfections of the people he loves.

LikeMinded Ladies September 6 Event: Faubourg Brewery
Free
· 3501 Jourdan Road,New Orleans,70126,US
Join LikeMinded Ladies NOLA for for our September event at Faubourg Brewery. We will network and taste beers from a woman-owned brewery!
We are preparing for another unique LikeMinded Ladies event supporting a woman-owned brewery! Enjoy an evening of networking, fellowship, and connecting at our September 6 LikeMinded Ladies event at Faubourg Brewing Company .
Attendance is FREE for LikeMinded Ladies members with current membership and just $15 for guests ! Purchase your tickets on Eventbrite now (tickets also will be available at the door.)
Faubourg Brewing Company was brought back to life with the help of New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans owner Gayle Benson. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina decimated the original brewery, forcing the company to relocate out of state and survive by contract-brewing our beloved lagers and ales. Twelve years later, Tom and Gayle Benson purchased a majority stake in the brand with the goal of bringing brewing operations back home to create jobs and spur local economic growth. Their promise became reality when the state-of-the-art brewery in New Orleans East was completed and started production in late 2019.
We will learn more about the history but make sure you bring your business cards. Between exploring the site, there will be ample opportunity for you to connect and chat professionally. Let's aim for a successful Q3 for everyone.
Faubourg Brewing Company is located at 3501 Jourdan Rd, New Orleans, LA 70126. PLEASE NOTE , you may encounter traffic heading east on I-10 to get to Faubourg Brewery. However, once you exit off I-10 on the high rise it only takes a minute to get to the brewery.
We will see you there! Please feel free to bring a guest. As always, we will have great food from Bobby Herbert's! Plus, lots of door prizes and birthday celebrations.

Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday at Zony Mash!
Zony Mash Beer Project
Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday
Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

NATIONAL COFFEE ICE CREAM DAY | SEPTEMBER 6
On September 6th National Coffee Ice Cream Day permits us to indulge in a caffeinated dessert. Coffee lovers will delight in the opportunity, especially if they also enjoy ice cream.
The cool and creamy result of our morning java in a refreshing dessert magnifies the celebration. While not everyone drinks coffee, some like the flavor in desserts. So this day may interest even those who don’t wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning.
Besides, when caffeine finds its way into a frozen, creamy blend, it’s nearly irresistible. Coffee ice cream has been around for many years. In 1869, coffee ice cream was used in a parfait. One recipe appeared in a 1919 cookbook for an Egg Coffee, consisting of cream, crushed ice, and coffee syrup.
Howard Johnson’s serves coffee ice cream as one of their standard menu items. According to Foodtimeline.org, since at least the 1960′s coffee is listed right along with vanilla, chocolate, banana, macaroon, and coconut.
One thing is for certain, coffee ice cream, and chocolate will almost always go well together. Serve a scoop over a dark chocolate cake and the celebration will be complete.

NATIONAL ANOTHER LOOK UNLIMITED DAY
National Another Look Unlimited Day on the day after Labor Day provides an opportunity for Fall cleaning.
Are you feeling green? Has stuff piled up around the house since Spring cleaning time? This observance is a day dedicated to taking a look around your home and ridding it of the excess things you have accumulated. Think Spring cleaning meets Fall cleaning.
It’s time to clear out the closets. Purge the attic. Donate toys and clothes. Tidy up, clean up and put to use those items that have a purpose!
Just because people throw it out and don’t have any use for it, doesn’t mean it’s garbage. ~ Andy Warhol
Before you decide to haul things to the trash, consider that many items have multiple uses. Re-purposing an item that appears to be no longer useful can be quite satisfying. Need some creative inspiration? Check out Pinterest or Etsy. Savvy moms convert old cribs into useful arts and crafts centers or use broken dressers as books shelves or wine racks.
When you no longer find your old items useful, others might. Your trash could very well be someone else’s treasure. So consider selling or donating it to someone who will give it new life.

Ain't There No More New Orleans
Derby Gisclair
Joseph Solari was one of thousands of Italian immigrants that made their mark on New Orleans. They moved to the corner of Royal and Customhouse (Iberville) Streets in 1868 when the previous owners, Faures & Norman, were devastated by a fire. Solari later incorporated another building behind them giving the business an L-shaped footprint in the rear of the store.
This building was purchased in 1961 and the new owners completely remodeled the interior and façade in more modern fashion which is why this building does not resemble the current building in any respect – the windows and roofline most prominently. During the renovation, Solari’s operated out of a temporary location at 332 Dryades Street as well from floor space provided by Maison Blanche on Canal Street.
The old building featured retractable awnings to protect their window displays from extreme heat, marble trim on the corners and doorways, and elaborate architectural finishes on the exterior. The coffee shop sign at the right is for the counter in the Hotel Monteleone. Notice the stack of newspapers from the pop-up newsstand on the corner.
Solari’s closed in 1965.

What a gorgeous site (and sight)! Yep, it's Canal St. (910) at Dauphine St. in 1910. If God laid out Canal St., I'd surmise that it would look like this: 'Maison Blanche', Chas. Kaufman Co. Millinery, Buffalo Dental Parlors, restaurant Shaumburg's Restaurant 'n Confectionary. (Shorpy).

ANNOUNCING CULTURE COLLISION 12!
ANNUAL FREE ARTS & CULTURE SHOWCASE RETURNS IN 2022 AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS
WWNO 89.9 FM and Jefferson Performing Arts Society are partnering to bring back Culture Collision! After a two-year pandemic hiatus, Culture Collision 12 returns on Wednesday, September 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie. The last Culture Collision event was held in August 2019.
Culture Collision is an annual showcase for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in the New Orleans metro-area. Ranging from the city’s classic arts institutions to its resourceful contemporary newcomers, this happy hour event reflects the diversity of the region’s creative community. The event is free and open to the public—and for this “comeback year”, the fee for organizations to reserve a display table have been waived. Over 60 local arts and culture companies are expected to join, with several of the participating organizations presenting live entertainment.
“From its beginning in 2008, Culture Collision’s aim has been to introduce all kinds of art and cultural activity to people from all parts of the metro area,” said WWNO General Manager, Paul Maassen. “WWNO is delighted that Culture Collision 2022 will carry on this mission and highlight our region’s newest investment in the arts, the Jefferson Performing Arts Center.”
This beloved community arts event is making its debut in Jefferson Parish after over a decade in New Orleans, where it was held at renowned cultural venues such as The National World War Two Museum, The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), The Ogden Museum, and New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).
In July 2022, Jefferson Performing Arts Society was named as the new managers of Jefferson Performing Arts Center. “Our hosting of Culture Collision aligns with our goal to build a wider array of presentations and programming at this gorgeous gem of a venue. We look forward to welcoming arts and cultural organizations of all genres and their audiences here in September to show them all that we have to offer and to let them know that our doors are always open to new opportunities and partnerships,” said Todd Simmons, General Manager of Jefferson Performing Arts Center and Executive Director of Jefferson Performing Arts Society.
Jefferson Performing Arts Center is located at 6400 Airline Drive near the former Zephyr Stadium, not far from the Saints training camp and next to LaSalle Park. Parking in the Jefferson Performing Arts Center adjacent lot is free. For more information visit www.culturenola.com or contact Amy Kirk Duvoisin at amy@jpas.org or 504-885-2000 ext. 212, or Ron Biava at 504-280-7001 or ron@wwno.org.
