Avocado Fest & World's Largest Avocado Display
Dec 4 at 10 AM – Dec 7 at 1 PM
4500 Tchoupitoulas St, New Orleans, Louisiana 70115

See — and taste — a bit of history on December 4th, when we go for our second Guinness World Records title by making the largest-ever avocado display. It will take up to 20 hours to prep and build the fruit display— yes, avocados are a fruit, technically a berry — at our store on Tchoupitoulas Street in Uptown New Orleans. An estimated 112,000 individual Hass avocados from Mexico will be used.
As if the world’s largest Hass avocado display wasn’t enough, our chefs will be on hand to sample avocado recipes, including street tacos and a variety of guacamoles, and show shoppers avaca-dos and avoca-don’ts. There will be additional demos and sampling at the store daily through Saturday, December 8th.

FEATURING:

• 112,000 Avocados on display, see and take pictures
• Photo opportunities with the Avocado character
• $26,000 in Avocado coupons
• Avocado demonstrations by Chef Sally and Chef Marc
• Sushi Avocado demonstration
• Carnitas and Avocados street tacos
• World’s largest Avocado Display

Pecans
Whether you say pEE-can or puh-CAWN, pecans are a favorite in the south. At our markets you’ll find whole pecans in the shell, or cracked which can be just what it sounds like where the shell is lightly crushed making it easier to get into, or sometimes cracked also involves blowing off the shell pieces that come away in this process yielding an almost completely shelled nut. And if vendors know someone with a sheller (an expensive piece of equipment) or have one themselves, or have some extra time on their hands, you might be able to find shelled halves or pieces. Pick yours up from A&K Citrus, Point Coupee Minority Growers, and more to satisfy your snacking and holiday baking needs.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Tomott’s Cajun Farm
You say tomato, we say Tomott’s! We’re so excited to have Tomott’s Cajun Farm back at market, providing us with a bounty of hydroponically grown tomatoes (and other beautiful veggies) until early summertime. Greg and Ann Sanamo, along with their son Kelly and his wife Rachel, are the owners of the farm that operates out of Larose, Louisiana. They are proud to grow everything pesticide free: Ann says, “We know it because we grow it!” The family decided to purchase Tomott’s, an existing hydroponic farm, when the opportunity arose about 10 years ago, and they haven’t looked back. While tomatoes are their specialty, they also grow eggplant, cucumbers, citrus, and other veggies. As of now you can find Tomott’s at our Thursday markets, but they’ll be attending more as the season unfolds. Come get your tomato on!

Exhibition to explore local sports history through 20 essential stories
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” opens

WHO:      The Historic New Orleans Collection

WHAT:    “Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change,” an exhibition featuring original objects

WHEN:   Dec. 4, 2019
–March 8, 2020

    Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
  Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

WHERE: 520 Royal St., in the French Quarter

HOW:     Admission is free.

WHY:         Stories are central to our love of sports. In a new exhibition from The Historic New Orleans Collection, 20 stories feature bitter rivalries, shocking upsets and unlikely heroes and reveal how these moments are woven into the collective memory and identity of the local community.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change”  opens Friday, Nov. 22, and explores sporting moments since the end of the American Civil War that have mirrored or instigated broader social and economic change in New Orleans. Curator Mark Cave noticed the vital role sports have played in the city’s slow—and often reluctant—progress toward inclusivity, and how major sporting events have long been a cornerstone of the city’s tourism economy.
Locals and visitors alike will quickly recognize some of the stories, such as the epic bouts of heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan, the founding of the Sugar Bowl in the midst of the Great Depression and the creation of the New Orleans Saints. The exhibition also covers horseracing, basketball, cycling, sailing, roller derby and more. Visitors will see the original Sugar Bowl trophy, a plaster cast of Sullivan’s arm, the Saints’ 2010 Super Bowl trophy and hundreds of original photographs and other objects from public and private collections throughout the community.
“Crescent City Sport” will be on view through Sunday, March 8, 2020. Admission is free, and the exhibition is open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Free activity guides will be available for younger visitors.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” is presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection and sponsored by The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation

Rivertown Theaters is Proud to Present The Original Cast & Creators in “Scrooge in Rouge,” the Raucous Holiday Show by Ricky Graham & Company November 30 – December 15 on the Mainstage

A Non-stop Farce Guaranteed to Get Audiences in a Ho Ho Ho, Ha Ha Ha Holiday Spirit!

Ricky Graham, every New Orleanians’ favorite funny man, and his jolly comical crew are back on the Rivertown Mainstage to bring some different kind of holiday cheer with this Christmas musical that has theatergoers coming back for more!

Local favorites Ricky Graham, Varla Jean Merman, Yvette Hargis and Jefferson Turner wrote this uproarious Christmas musical y'all! The creators themselves reprise their roles for the Rivertown audiences!

Get in the holiday spirit with this quick-change, cross-dressing musical version "somewhat loosely based on the idea of 'A Christmas Carol'. The "Royal Music Hall Variety Players" have a widespread case of food poisoning. This leaves only three surviving members to soldier on through a performance of A Christmas Carol originally intended for twenty. With bad puns, bawdy vaudeville humorisms, naughty double-entendres, and witty songs, it’s a most wonderful holiday treat!
Book and Lyrics by Ricky Graham. Music by Jefferson Turner. Additional Material by Jeffery Roberson and Other Interesting Bits by Yvette Hargis . Rated PG

The exhibit will combine equipment, photography, storytelling, videography, dynamic displays, and original art to create an immersive experience for the museum guest. The Culinary Corner Gallery will be transformed into a Cajun cooking dreamland with featurettes on the Women of the Lafayette Junior League, the equipment popular during the late 70’s and early 80’s, the techniques of Cajun Cooking, and the products that defined the era. These food artifacts will be supplemented by the art of George Rodrigue. In the same way his work illustrated Talk About Good II, it will illustrate our exhibition on the Lafayette Junior League.

The marvelous eclectic jazz poet Namaya, Peacenik Field Hippy of the highest order, will be joined by the above mentioned trio for an unpredictable and thoroughly entertaining evening unlike anything we’ve done at the Columns in my 21 years there. We will pass out song lyrics for everyone, the band will play beautifully, and lots of people will be sitting in. That is, if they show up. I’ll have a sign up sheet and a mike ready, and you are invited to join us and play or sing one holiday song, whether you're a beginner or pro. French Literature Discussion Group Focuses on

Stendhal’s
The Red and the Black
The French Literature Discussion Group will discuss Stendhal’s  The Red and the Black  on four Monday nights during the fall of 2019 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
Each session is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.

The book is about 525 pages not counting the chronology, introduction and the appendixes. The Penguin Classic version is recommended.

All reading and discussion is conducted in English.

The Red and the Black  focuses on handsome, ambitious Julien Sorel, who is determined to rise above his humble provincial origins. Soon realizing that success can only be achieved by adopting the subtle code of hypocrisy by which society operates, he begins to achieve advancement through deceit and self-interest. His triumphant career takes him into the heart of glamorous Parisian society, along the way conquering the gentle, married Madame de Rênal, and the haughty Mathilde. But then Julien commits an unexpected, devastating crime—and brings about his own downfall.

Stendhal is the pen name of Henri Marie Beyle, who was born in Grenoble in 1783.  The Red and the Black  was his second novel, and he also produced or began three others, including  The Charterhouse at Parma  and  Lucien Leuwen . None of his published works was received with any great understanding during his lifetime.
