NATIONAL HANDWRITING DAY

National Handwriting Day on January 23rd encourages us to put pen to paper and write out our thoughts. According to the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association, it is a chance for all to re-explore the purity and power of handwriting.

Click play and enjoy a story about National Handwriting Day featuring our founder, Marlo Anderson. If you enjoy the 2-minute show, subscribe with your favorite podcast player.

While technology speeds up the writing process and makes communication more efficient worldwide, there's something to be said for writing thoughts longhand. Whether it's a journal, notes, or even a letter to someone, the act of writing with pen and paper is a supremely tactile and patient practice. If it does anything, it forces the body and the mind to slow down and resynchronize.

Look around. In mere seconds, letters and words form when we text or email. Phones transmit our voices in real time. Once sent or said, those words cannot be recalled.

  • Meanwhile, writing longhand feels like taking a deep breath. Jumbled thoughts must be sorted before the ink spills onto a white page. They must count and be worthy of the lines that will fill it. It's an exercise in faith. And it requires practice, too.

***BOIL WATER ADVISORY FOR EAST BANK***

×

The Jefferson Parish Water Department and Emergency crews worked throughout the night to successfully repair the waterline. The Water Department is now working to gradually restore water pressure on the east bank of Jefferson Parish. Even once the pressure is fully restored, the boil water advisory will remain in effect for the entire east bank of Jefferson Parish until rescinded by the Jefferson Parish Water Department and the Louisiana Department of Health. All residents are urged not to drink the water without boiling or disinfecting it first, or use bottled water.

All three eastbound lanes of Jefferson Hwy from Central Ave to Shrewsbury Rd are closed this morning. The traffic detour is North to Airline or South to River Road, to Shrewsbury and back to eastbound Jefferson Hwy.

First Parish Court, all Head Start Centers, Libraries, JPRD facilities and community centers on the east bank of Jefferson Parish are closed due to low water pressure. The Joseph S. Yenni Building remains open to the public.

32 bakeries. 320,000 votes. New Orleans chooses Times-Picayune's king cake bracket winner.

The winner has only been making king cake for two seasons of Carnival. Have you tried one yet?

  • BY IAN MCNULTY and CHELSEA SHANNON

We picked 32 of the best places to get a king cake in the New Orleans metro, and after weeks of voting and hundreds of thousands of responses, the people have spoken.

With 9,786 votes in the final round, Ayu Bakehouse in the Marigny has been dubbed the winner. Loretta's Authentic Pralines was the runner-up, with 5,543 votes.

The king cake bracket had five rounds, with 320,030 total votes cast.

Ayu and Loretta's held the top spots for the majority of each round, but Ayu was the sole king cake vendor to be in the top four for every round of the bracket.

+2

You say Ayu Bakehouse and Loretta's have the best king cakes in NOLA. We tried both.

The votes have been coming in, and our NOLA.com king cake bracket is down to two contenders: Ayu Bakehouse and Loretta's Authentic Pralines.

This is only the second Carnival season for Ayu Bakehouse, which opened in the spring of 2022. This is a bakery café that brings nice morning energy to Frenchmen Street, a block away from the main stretch of popular nightlife.

Ayu is a small shop that decided to go big on king cake, rolling out three versions for its debut last year. All are back this season too: the most traditional, called the Croissant City Classic; a non-traditional chocolate babka king cake; and a savory king cake (its own non-traditional tradition), dubbed the “king muffuletta.” We picked the Croissant City Classic for the best head-to-head comparison.

Note: Ayu encourages pre-ordering king cakes; you might get lucky and find one on the rack, but that’s a gamble. Ayu ships king cakes nationwide.

What does "callipygian" mean?

Having shapely buttocks

callipygian Pronunciation: kah-luh-pi-jee-uhn

Definition: having well-shaped or beautiful buttocks

Origin: The word "callipygian" originated from the Greek words "kallos," meaning beauty, and "pygē," meaning buttocks. It entered the English language in the early 19th century and has since been used to describe someone with attractive or shapely buttocks.

Example: She turned heads as she walked down the beach, her callipygian figure drawing admiration from all who saw her.

"Having shapely buttocks" is indeed the meaning of the word "callipygian." This term specifically emphasizes the aesthetic appeal of the buttocks, highlighting their beauty and attractiveness. It conveys the notion that a person's posterior possesses a pleasing shape or form. Whether used to describe a person, a sculpture, or a work of art, "callipygian" emphasizes the visual appeal of well-formed buttocks and their ability to captivate and delight.

UNEASY LIES THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN, BUT WHICH ONE WILL WEAR IT?

England’s King Henry II and his Queen Elinor of Aquitaine had four sons, the eldest died, leaving the other three to squabble over who came next. Unfortunately, Henry and Elinor disagreed over which one should take the crown next.

That’s the arc of The Lion in Winter, Playmakers Theater’s next production. Directed by Chase Hefte, the production chronicles the royal gathering at Christmas 1183 as the family meets to hash out the succession. It does not go well leaving Elinor to comment, “What family doesn’t have its ups and downs?”

The Lion in Winter crackles with brilliant scenes between the royals as they plot and scheme and form alliances to promote their choice for king.

The production opens Saturday, Jan. 20 and runs through Sunday, February 4. Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available through www.BonTempsTix.com.

Rod Walker: Zion Williamson wore a Drew Brees shirt, then helped Pelicans rewrite record book

Zion Williamson wore a t-shirt that commemorated the high school football state championship Drew Brees won almost 30 years ago.

Wearing a shirt honoring the legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback turned out to be a fitting choice Tuesday as Williamson delivered one pinpoint pass after another in Brees-like fashion on this record-setting night.

Williamson finished with a career-best 11 assists and the New Orleans Pelicans rewrote the franchise history book in a 153-124 shellacking of the Utah Jazz.

The 153 points is the most points in franchise history, breaking the previous mark of 149 set in 2018 in a win over the Sacramento Kings.

The Pelicans also dished out 41 assists Tuesday, eclipsing the previous mark of 40.

So it's understandable that Williamson, wearing a shirt with images of Brees from the 1996 season at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, also wore a giant smile.

NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER DAY

National Peanut Butter Day on January 24th recognizes an American staple in our pantries. Whether creamy or chunky, with chocolate or with jelly, peanut butter gets the recognition it deserves each year on this day.

The early peanut butter made by the Aztecs and Incas around 1000 BC was more of a paste and not nearly as creamy as the peanut butter we know now.

Click play and enjoy a story about National Peanut Butter Day featuring our founder, Marlo Anderson. If you enjoy the 2-minute show, subscribe with your favorite podcast player.

Peanut butter didn't become widely used until the 20th century. First, the peanut had to be considered more than animal feed, which wasn't until the late 1800s. At the turn of the century, inventions that made planting, cultivating, and harvesting the legume (the peanut isn't a nut at all) made it possible to see the peanut as a retail and wholesale food item.

Peanut butter is a good source of vitamin E, B6, niacin, calcium, potassium and iron, is packed with protein and is rich in healthy monounsaturated fat.

Bringing Peanut Butter to the Masses

We can thank four men for the inventions and processes that bring us the creamy, smooth peanut butter we enjoy today: Marcus Gilmore Edson of Canada, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, Dr. Ambrose Straub of St. Louis, Missouri, and chemist Joseph Rosefield.

In 1884, Edson developed a process to make peanut paste from milling roasted peanuts between two heated plates. The famous cereal maker and health food specialist of the time, Kellogg, patented a process with raw peanuts in 1895. Dr. Straub is responsible for patenting a peanut butter making machine in 1903.

Peanut butter was introduced to audiences at the 1904 Universal Exposition in St. Louis at C.H. Sumner's concession stand.

But the man who brought us the peanut butter we know and love today was Joseph Rosefield. In 1922, through homogenization, Rosefield was able to keep peanut oil from separating from the peanut solids. He later sold the patent to a company that began making Peter Pan peanut butter. Rosefield then went into business for himself selling Skippy peanut butter through Rosefield Packing. He also supplied peanut butter for military rations during World War II.

What is the modern equivalent of the word "hither"?

Here

The word "Here" is the modern equivalent of the word "hither". It is used to indicate a location that is close to or within the speaker's vicinity. Unlike "hither", which was commonly used in the past, "here" is still widely used in modern English. It is a simple and straightforward word that can be used to indicate a physical location or a figurative one. For example, someone might say "come here" to indicate that they want someone to move closer to them physically, or they might say "here is the solution to the problem" to indicate that they have found a solution to a particular issue.

The Flying Horses at City Park !

Dating back to 1906 with many figures dating to 1885, the old Carousel in City Park New Orleans Louisiana is only one of 100 hand-carved carousels remaining in the US and the only one in Louisiana. This is digital art based on an original photograph titled The Flying Horses by Rebecca Korpita.

The animals were carved and hand painted by Charles Looff and Charles Carmel. The Looff animal figures contain faux gem stones and are older than the Carmel animals.

The animals are loved so much by visitors they need repainting every year to 2 years. They are still hand painted. The Carousel contains fifty-six animals. 53 are horses plus a lion, giraffe, and camel. There are also 2 chariots for riding.

The horses have real horse hair tails and thirty of them move up and down and are called Flyers. The Carousel still uses the original motor.

  • May 23 — 9:53 a.m. — Flower Moon
  • June 21 — 9:08 p.m. — Strawberry Moon

  • Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
  • Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon

For instance, almost every month’s Full Moon boasts a name sourced from Native American, Colonial American, or other North American traditions, with their titles mirroring seasonal shifts and nature’s events.

Wolf Moon (January): Inspired by the cries of hungry wolves.

Snow Moon (February): A nod to the month’s often heavy snowfall.

Worm Moon (March): Named after the earthworms that signal thawing grounds.

Pink Moon (April): In honor of the blossoming pink wildflowers.

Related: How to see the eclipse in April

Flower Moon (May): Celebrating the bloom of flowers.

Strawberry Moon (June): Marks the prime strawberry harvest season.

Buck Moon (July): Recognizing the new antlers on bucks.

Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.

Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.

Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.

Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.

Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.

In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.

Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.

Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.

Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

swirl newsThe Old Vine Project

In all the wine regions of the world, old vines are proudly mentioned on labels, in many languages. But only in one country, South Africa, is it possible for that claim to be certified by a regulatory authority.  Due to the dedication and intense efforts of Rosa Kruger, South African viticulturist and Decanter Hall of Fame Award Winner, South Africa began a not-for-profit organization dedicated to saving and preserving South Africa’s old vineyards, officially named, the Old Vine Project. With the help of a philanthropic grant, the organization launched the world’s first heritage vineyard certification program, which permits South African wineries that own verified old vines to use an official seal on their bottles indicating that the wine comes from a heritage vineyard.

One of the most memorable wines I've had in my 20 years in this business was from a Certified Heritage Vineyard, made by the award-winning, terroir-obsessed winemaker, Eben Sadie. In the early 2000's, Eben had a vision for making wines from old, heritage vineyards. It was Rosa Kruger who pointed him to some of the best sites she knew, and in 2006, Sadie debuted his “Mev Kirsten” Chenin Blanc to an unprecedented level of critical acclaim. This decomposed granite vineyard was planted in the 1920s, at the foot of Bothmaskop Mountain in Stellenbosch’s Jonkershoek Valley. The mere one hectare of vines, belonging to Mrs Kirsten and her family, is recognized as the oldest Chenin Blanc in South Africa. During my eye-opening visit to the Winelands of South Africa last year, it was the 2021 Sadie Family Mev Kirsten and a visit with Eben Sadie in Swartland that introduced me to the important work of the Old Vine Project.

When I asked South African wine importer Suzaan Laing about an old vine tasting, she was thrilled to present and discuss this incredible project from her native country. Her enthusiasm is evident in the introductory write-up she did for me -  "The commercial lifespan of a vineyard is between 25 to 30 years on average. Although vines can produce for decades longer, yields get too sparse for economic viability after about 30 years. A combination of historical, economic and environmental factors have given the South African wine industry treasured old vineyards (ranging in age from 30 to 100 years), which produce distinctive, valuable wines in limited quantity. Initiatives like The Old Vine Project, and certification as a Heritage Vineyard (planted more than 35 years ago) have preserved these vineyards (over 10,600 acres so far). What’s more is that these vines grow in the oldest viticultural soils on the planet (around 700 million years old), and in many cases have survived as unirrigated bush vines (meaning even lower yields). Chenin Blanc makes up most of these Heritage Vineyards, but historic South African varietals like Colombar, Cinsaut and Semillon have significant old vines too. A good wine improves with age. Come see that a good vineyard does too".

Join Suzaan Laing, for this in-depth look at the how and why of the preservation and protection of these vineyards and the important role they play in the quality of the wine that's in your glass.  Reserve your spots here, Quality over Quantity

New Orleans' Krewe du Vieux tackles AI with fabulous 'gay robots,' more debauchery in 2024

It’s never too difficult for Krewe du Vieux to find possible themes for its annual Carnival parade. After all, New Orleans’ premiere gang of lovable smartasses live in a target rich environment for their signature satirical parade.

Last year, many of the 17 subkrewes were focused on mocking city officials, heavily leaning into Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s travel-related controversies and other municipal failures.

But this Saturday, Jan. 27, the parade has a wider scope as it explores the theme of “Artificial Ignorance” while making its way through Faubourg Marigny, the French Quarter and part of the Warehouse District.

“It’s looking at societal changes more broadly,” says Sebastian Boegershausen, captain of Krewe du Vieux. “You’ll find a lot of references to how artificial intelligence is changing us. At the same time, there’s a lot of willful ignorance in the world, for people to sustain their opinions. We are shamelessly mocking that behavior.”

Each subkrewe of the famously off-color parade will showcase hand-made, mule-drawn floats, soundtracked by live brass bands. Floats depict various interpretations of the theme, infused with plenty of political and social commentary and witty, provocative humor.

The Krewe of the Mystic Inane, for example, is tackling homophobic hysteria that has been stoked by right-wing politicians and commentators — and mashing that up with the concept of a robot takeover.

Members are planning to dress up like “gay robots,” says captain Jenn Lilos. “Our theme is ‘Feared and Fabulous: The Gay-I Ro-Butt Uprising. We’re going to be Godzilla-style taking over New Orleans. But rather than destroying the city, the gay robots are making it more fabulous.”

The Krewe of K.A.O.S. hints that it will be dunking on everyone’s favorite Foghorn Leghorn impersonator, U.S. Sen. John Kennedy, whose pseudo-folksy antics in D.C. have become increasingly buffoonish over the years.

“We’re targeting a certain hypocrite senator that used to be a very liberal attorney but now panders to the far-right by pretending he’s not an Ivy League / Oxford grad,” a krewe member says.

Of course, New Orleans City Hall is not going to get out of the night unscathed. As usual, revelers can expect plenty of jabs at local officials over recent and ongoing issues.

Isaac and Amanda Toups will be honored as krewe royalty for 2024's parade.

The Krewe of Drips and Discharges’ float is an ode to the city’s inability to regulate short-term rentals, which has worsened the affordable housing crisis and wreaked havoc on residential neighborhoods.

“Our theme is AirD&D: Short Term Rental and Displeasure Club,” says longtime member Sean Gerowin.

He says the float will depict a short-term rental in disarray, decorated with empty beer cans and other garbage commonly found in the wake of, say, a rowdy bachelor party attended by out-of-towners.

“It’s like a typhoon of chaos,” Gerowin says. “The trash represents the pulling apart of the fabric of neighborhoods ... It’s supposed to grab people’s attention and say, ‘Hey, Airbnbs are a bit of a problem.’”

Among the Drips and Discharges’ throws are small pieces of paper with "Yelp reviews left by disgruntled tourists,” such as “’The French Quarter sucks and the whole place smells like weed,’ or ‘I went to Commander’s Palace and the oysters were raw,’” says Gerowin.

Some of the subkrewes are leaning more into the lewd humor that the parade is known for.

The Mystic Krewe of Spermes, easily recognizable by its 50 or so members who carry giant papier-mâché sperms on sticks, is giving a naughty nod to Krewe du Vieux’s king and queen consort, chefs Isaac and Amanda Toups.

“(Their restaurant) is Toups Meatery, which goes really well with ‘meat’ and ‘beat,’” says Christopher Ard, a Spermes co-captain. “Our floats are sometimes very political, but this year it’s more just funny ... We’re just giving (parade-goers) a break from reality on a Saturday night."

For his part, Isaac Toups says being named as the new king came as a complete surprise to him.

The krewe typically chooses someone who’s a culture bearer and unsung hero to reign over its parade, and Toups certainly fits into both of those categories.

Still, “It wasn’t even on my radar,” he says. “Normally, some gossip slips my way. I’ve been here (in New Orleans) and in the industry and the network, and it was completely out of the blue. I’ve never rolled in any parade ever, and now I’m the king.”

Boegershausen says Isaac Toups was an obvious choice, given his ongoing charitable endeavors and his contributions to the culinary scene in the city.

“He deserved this questionable recognition we’re giving him,” he says.

Boegershausen adds that the Toupses’ float is a marvel designed by John Valentino, a longtime commissioned artist who has designed several floats for previous Krewe du Vieux royalty.

“What he’s doing this year for Isaac is absolutely astounding,” Boegershausen says. “When it gets disassembled, it should end up in a museum somewhere.”

The Toupses would normally be at the restaurant on a Saturday night, “getting their asses kicked,” during one of their busiest seasons, Isaac says.

He fully embraces his new role as the king — and the krewe’s general lack of plastic beads. Handing out unique throws has long been a part of the parade’s traditions. Many members give out stickers, cups, koozies and other hand-crafted items and keepsakes, instead of beads.

“Each subkrewe has different rules, but we have always discouraged beads,” says Inane’s Lilos. “Even if we didn’t discourage them for ethical and environmental reasons, they’re just a pain in the ass to carry ... Sometimes crowds of tourists, who don’t understand what parade they have gone to, will ask for beads. I’m like, ‘It’s not that kind of parade, but here’s something unique I made.'"

Toups says he has some special throws planned for his turn as king. The couple will hand out culinary-themed throws including go-cups, heads of garlic and customized condoms adorned with the phrase “Better than your husband’s meat” on the packaging.

Meanwhile, Krewe du Vieux members are also relieved that the route is back to normal after the city cut it short last year, just days before it was expected to roll, citing police staffing shortages.

“A lot of businesses were impacted last year,” Boegershausen says, referring to bars and music clubs along Frenchmen and Decatur streets that were blindsided by the route changes last year. “But we started working with (NOPD) in July and have had a very good, close cooperation throughout the season.”

He says the krewe also communicated with business and neighborhood associations, who were thrilled to learn that the parade would be “back and at their doorstep.”

The krewe will host its Vieux Doo ball after the parade ends at the Sugar Mill. The event is open to the public and tickets are $50 through Eventbrite, and the lineup includes entertainment by J & the Causeways, Jeez Loueez and LOTAGRFD.

And despite the pressures that come with a shorter Carnival season, the krewe’s den has been abuzz with excitement as members put their finishing touches on their floats.

“It’s kind of like summer camp,” says Gerowin of getting ready for the parade. “You get everyone back together again, but instead of doing water skiing or mountain climbing, we’re building a highly inappropriate float to parade down the New Orleans streets.”

Boegershausen says he hopes spectators get “a good laugh.” But he also says the parade is meant to be eye-opening.

“We’re a satirical parade, and satire needs to be both of those things,” he says. “It needs to make you laugh, and it needs to make you think.”

AFC Championship Game

(3) Kansas City Chiefs at (1) Baltimore Ravens

When: Sunday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. ET (CBS)

Opening line: BAL -3 (44.5)

What to know: The ideal ingredients for winning in the postseason would seem to be an elite quarterback and an elite defense. That brings us to the Ravens, just the fourth team since the 1970 merger to have a first-team All-Pro quarterback and the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL. The three previous teams to do so -- the 1972 Dolphins, 1978 Steelers and 1996 Packers -- all went on to win the Super Bowl.

That's the combination of factors working in the Ravens' favor next Sunday. With quarterback Lamar Jackson coming off a historic performance against the Texans (two rushing TDs and two TD passes) and the Ravens' defense limiting Houston to its second-lowest yardage total of the season (213), this seems like a truly complete team.

But don't expect the Chiefs to be the least bit fazed by any of this after overcoming the Bills on the road in another memorable matchup between the budding rivals. After being treated to one premier quarterback matchup in Patrick Mahomes vs. Josh Allen on Sunday, the AFC playoffs will serve up another in the championship game, when Mahomes and the Chiefs visit Jackson and the Ravens.

The Chiefs are 3-2 in AFC title games with Mahomes under center. But there's a key difference this season: The Chiefs have arguably the best defense in the Mahomes era. They finished the season second in scoring defense and yards allowed. No Kansas City team has been higher than seventh in either metric in Mahomes' tenure. -- Holder

Why the Ravens will win: Both sides of the ball are on fire for Baltimore. Let's start with the defense, where the Ravens allowed zero offensive touchdowns in the divisional round against the Texans. The Ravens' defense didn't blink against Houston the way the Browns did in the wild-card round, and the unit was dominant, particularly against the run, where Baltimore allowed negative-0.29 EPA per play. It's nothing new for the Ravens' defense, which now ranks first in EPA per play over the course of the season, playoffs included.

Despite the name brand of the Chiefs, the reality of this matchup is that Baltimore's defense has been much, much better than the Kansas City offense. The Chiefs were ranked 10th in EPA per play entering Sunday.

Offensively, the Ravens are on almost as strong of a roll. They were good all season, and they kicked it up a notch in the playoffs. Jackson posted a 94 QBR against Houston, and on his run plays or dropbacks, the Ravens accrued 0.41 EPA per play. In other words, every five of Jackson's plays added two full points to the Ravens' expected scoring margin. The Chiefs' defense will provide more resistance than Houston's did, but Kansas City ranked 11th in EPA per play allowed against opposing QB scrambles or runs. And overall, the Chiefs are simply weaker against the run, ranking 26th in EPA per opponent designed carry. It could be another big day for Jackson. -- Walder

Why the Chiefs will win: It's still Mahomes with the best defense he has ever had. The Chiefs still have Andy Reid calling plays, a breakout receiver in Rashee Rice and an offensive line that protects Mahomes. And tight end Travis Kelce just had two touchdowns in the divisional round.

play

0:30

Mahomes, Kelce TD connection sets NFL postseason recordPatrick Mahomes connects again with Travis Kelce for a Chiefs touchdown, giving them a postseason record of 16 TDs as QB-receiver duo.

Despite all that has gone wrong this season -- most notably the receivers' league-worst 5.7% drop rate entering Sunday and their inability to support Mahomes and the offense at an elite level -- all of the above means the Chiefs have a chance to score plenty of points in the AFC Championship Game. Plus, while the Ravens led the league in sacks in the regular season, Mahomes simply refuses to take them. His 3.9% sack rate and 13.8% sack-to-pressure rate rank second in the NFL behind Allen.

And while Buffalo moved the ball at will at times against the Chiefs, the long view of the defense is it is still one of the best groups in the league, ranking fourth in EPA per play allowed. In the end, Kansas City kept the Bills out of the end zone, too.

The Chiefs are underdogs and deservedly so, but they just beat Baltimore's biggest challenger in the AFC. They can beat the Ravens themselves, too. -- Walder

NFC Championship Game

(3) Detroit Lions at (1) San Francisco 49ers

When: Sunday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. ET (Fox)

Opening line: SF -7 (51.5)

What to know: The 49ers haven't won a Super Bowl since 1994. To put that in perspective, quarterback Steve Young threw three touchdown passes to Jerry Rice in that Super Bowl XXIX win over the Chargers. Still, the Niners will be making their seventh appearance in the NFC Championship Game since 2011. San Francisco has gone 2-4 in those games, three of which have come under coach Kyle Shanahan since 2019. Shanahan has a chance to pass Bill Walsh for the best postseason win percentage in club history with a win over Detroit.

2023 NFL Playoffs

As for quarterback Brock Purdy, he's trying to build a legacy of his own, and winning this game would go a long way after he was knocked out of the conference title game with an elbow injury last season. But the Lions are also trying to rewrite the history books. By winning two playoff games for the first time since 1957, they've already done something most Lions fans have never personally witnessed. And the Lions are doing it with an explosive offense that figures to test the 49ers' elite defense.

Orchestrating it all is quarterback Jared Goff, who is one of the best stories in this NFL season. After powering the Lions with 287 passing yards and two touchdown passes in Sunday's win over Tampa Bay, the Rams castoff has a chance to go to his second Super Bowl. If he takes the Lions to Las Vegas, they might just build him a statue in the Motor City. -- Holder

Why the 49ers will win: Yes, Purdy's performance in the divisional round against the Packers -- when he posted a negative-6% completion percentage over expectation, per NFL Next Gen Stats -- caused concern. But the best way to judge a team is with a long lens, and when we do that the 49ers still look plenty menacing.

And let's think about the matchup here. The 49ers have the most efficient passing offense in football. What is the Lions' big weakness? Defending the pass. Entering Sunday, the Lions ranked 30th in EPA allowed per opposing dropback. San Francisco's plethora of offensive playmakers will be a nightmare for Detroit, and while the Lions' offense is also effective, they don't have near the same firepower.

Plus, the 49ers have stars galore on defense to counter. Edge rusher Nick Bosa and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave lead a pass rush that can get pressure on the quarterback despite blitzing only 20% of the time (sixth lowest), and cornerback Charvarius Ward and linebacker Fred Warner should be able to at least mitigate Detroit's Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta. -- Walder

play

0:34

Amon-Ra St. Brown hauls it in for a Lions TDJared Goff lofts one into the end zone for Amon-Ra St. Brown to extend the Lions' lead.

Why the Lions will win: The Lions have two major factors working for them in the NFC Championship Game. First, a shaky Purdy. Until his game-winning drive against the Packers, Purdy looked plenty fallible. He has led an ultra-efficient offense over the course of the season, but if he's rattled at all, that gives Detroit hope.

Second, one thing you can do against the 49ers is run on them. That plays right into the Lions' strength, as they rushed for 114 yards against Tampa Bay. They lean run-heavy, with the 11th-highest run rate over expectation, per NFL Next Gen Stats, and yet they are the sixth-most efficient running team in the league in terms of EPA per play, thanks to strong play from David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.

Finally, the 49ers are one of the most efficient pass defenses because of their ability to defend deep throws, ranking third in EPA per play allowed on attempts of 20 or more air yards. But that's a wasted skill against Detroit, which throws deep just 7% of the time, the lowest rate in the NFL. The Lions will need the ball to bounce their way a few times, but they certainly have hope. -- Walder

Drew Brees has a busy next two weeks. This week, Brees will reign as king of Washington Mardi Gras in D.C. Next week, his Smalls Sliders Metairie location will open on Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Clearview City Center at 4580 Veterans Blvd.

The grand opening will be celebrated with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce at 10 a.m on Feb. 1. This is the first Smalls Sliders location for the former New Orleans Saints quarterback and Super Bowl MVP. Brees owns the Metairie location, along with former Purdue football teammates Jason Loezel and Ben Smith.

The three originally announced the partnership in May 2022.

“Drew has been an integral part of Smalls Sliders since its inception, and we are thrilled to celebrate his first Can opening,” said Maria Rivera, CEO of Smalls Sliders. “His passion and commitment to our vision and values have been a driving force of our growth and brand culture, and we are proud to partner with him in Metairie and beyond.”

The Smalls Sliders chain, which serves cheeseburger sliders and waffle fries through drive-thru and walk-up options, will open 40 restaurants in 2024 across the Southeast. Smalls Sliders opened its first signature ‘Smorange’ colored Can in 2019. Smalls Sliders has more than 160 Cans open or under development.

“We’ve seen the excitement surrounding the Smalls brand, and it has only heightened around our grand opening,” said Melissa Kernaghan, director of operations at Boilermaker Ventures and local operator of the Smalls Sliders in Metairie. “Smalls has become a staple within Louisiana communities, and people truly feel connected to the brand. We aim to continue building upon the Smalls fanbase within Metairie and look forward to becoming an integral part of people’s lives.”

Small Sliders joins the many business ventures that Brees has become involved in since he retired following the 2020 NFL season. In January 2024, Brees opened Surge Entertainment in Baton Rouge. He also owns Stretch Zone, multiple Jimmy John’s and Dunkin’ franchises and has invested in food delivery service Waitr, Walk-On’s and craft superfood chain everbowl™, among others. Brees also spent one season as an analyst for NBC Sunday Night Football following his NFL retirement.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
