NATIONAL LAZY DAY | AUGUST 10
On August 10th, National Lazy Day gives us permission to relax and kick back. So, we’re going to be a bit lazy here.
As you can see, there is not much information regarding this annually celebrated holiday as we do not feel like doing any research. Actually, we do not feel like doing anything at all. Consequently, we are in our hammocks with a couple of good books and glasses of lemonade and iced tea. Yes, it is a Lazy Day. We choose to be lazy rather than tell much more about this day.
You can’t teach people to be lazy – they either have it, or they don’t. ~ Dagwood Bumstead

St. Tammany labor force almost to pre-pandemic levels
St. Tammany Parish saw a 5.1% increase in its workforce from the first quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, a nearly full recovery of active labor force participants to pre-pandemic levels.
St. Tammany’s total labor force is 119,662, showing a 99.4% recovery.
Unemployment remains among the lowest in the state at 2.6%, according to “The AnalyST”, an economic research publication generated by St. Tammany Corporation, with support by Metairie Bank Northshore. The report analyzes the labor market, business incorporations, manufacturing and service, housing and sales tax, among other economic factors within the parish.
“Tracking and understanding economic trends is an important exercise for economic developers, public officials, business professionals and the general citizenry that empowers us to make the best possible decisions to help our community prosper,” reported Elizabeth Lee, research and policy analyst for St. Tammany Corporation, who along with research fellow Abigail Chascin contributed to the report.
St. Tammany is the fourth most populous parish in Louisiana, with 258,111 residents. The median age is 38.9. The median household income is $66,539. There are 8,335 business establishments.
Labor market
The Federal Reserve reports that the natural rate of unemployment for a healthy, competitive economy is between 3.5% to 4.5%. St. Tammany Parish is well below that rate, with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state at 2.6% at the end of the first quarter of 2022. Louisiana’s current unemployment rate stands at 3.8%. The first quarter of 2021 unemployment rate in the parish was 4%. The all-time peak of unemployment occurred right after the pandemic in April 2020, when the parish showed a 15.1% unemployment rate.
St. Tammany’s labor force has 119,662 active participants, less than 1,000 fewer compared to the first quarter of 2020 and 6,000 more than the first quarter of 2021, according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission. The LWC defines labor force as the share of the working-age population who are either employed or unemployed and actively seeking employment.
New business incorporations
There was an average of 82 new business incorporations filings per week in St. Tammany Parish during the first quarter of 2022, compared to 2021’s weekly average of 91. Both 2021 and 2022 have far surpassed pre-pandemic levels. In 2021, there were 1,271 filed new business incorporations, compared to 788 in 2020 and 823 in 2019.
“The spike in new business incorporation filings shown from Q1 2020 through Q1 2022 may indicate many people’s desires to work for themselves or work from home,” the report said.
Manufacturing industry
St. Tammany’s Q1 2022 average PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) score of 57.8% shows a slight decrease from Q1 2021’s average of 61.4%. Any PMI index score above 50 indicates overall growth of the manufacturing economy. The Institute for Supply Management measures PMI scores based on surveys of purchasing managers, looking at new orders, employment, inventory and backlogs, exports/imports and price, among other business activities.
During Q1 2022, commodities in short supply included aluminum, electrical and electronic components, fabricated metal products, lumber, plastic resins, power supplies, semiconductors and steel.
Service industry
St. Tammany’s Q1 2022 average SPM (Services Purchasing Managers’ Index) score of 58.2% shows a slight decrease from Q1 2021’s average of 59.2%. Any SPM index score above 50 indicates overall growth of the services economy.
During Q1 2022, commodities in short supply for the service industry included blood collection tubes, computer chips, computers and peripherals, construction materials, electronic components, IV tubing, labor, packaging, plastic pipe and printers.
Housing
According to “The AnalyST”, St. Tammany Parish saw a 10.6% decrease in the number of residential real estate properties sold with 960 in Q1 2022, compared to 1,074 homes sold in Q1 2021. However, median sales prices continue to rise at $280,000, sporting an 8.1% increase in median sales price as of Q1 2022, compared to Q1 2021.
Retail sales tax
The total amount of sales tax collected in St. Tammany Parish from Q1 2022 was $74.2 million, consistently the same as last year’s quarter and equivalent to pre-pandemic levels.
December 2021 has had the highest sales tax collection on record at $31.8 million.
“Q1 2022’s collection has remained consistent, if not exceeding pre-pandemic levels,” the report said. “However, this could change moving forward if the rising rate of inflation causes consumers to cautiously withhold their spending.”

About the Episode
Today’s episode is brought to you by the Museum’s Jenny Craig Institute for the Study of War and Democracy and The Media & Education Center.
We are going back to 2020, when Dr. Ed Lengel, then the Museum’s Senior Director of Programs, hosted a webinar with President Harry Truman’s grandson - Clifton Truman Daniel - and Paul Sparrow, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum Director.
They presented Roosevelt’s and Truman’s roles in the Manhattan Project and the dramatic race for atomic power.
The Manhattan Project’s success would have been impossible without President Roosevelt’s committed leadership, and President Truman’s decision to employ the weapons.
This culminated in the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th, 1945.
Topics Covered in this Episode
- Manhattan Project
- President Roosevelt
- President Truman
- Imperial Japan

NATIONAL S’MORES DAY | AUGUST 10
National S’mores Day on August 10th recognizes the most popular campfire treat! Millions of people of all ages love this gooey, toasted treat.
S’mores consists of a roasted marshmallow with a layer of chocolate bar sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker.
The origin of this tasty snack is credited to the entrepreneur Alec Barnum. However, the first recorded version of the recipe can be found in the 1927 publication of Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Even though the Girl Scouts were not the first ones to make s’mores, Girl Scout groups describe them in their reports as early as 1925. Earlier recipes used the name “Some Mores.” It is unclear when the word “S’mores” became the more common name.
Today, many variations on the original s’more find their way around a campfire.
- Try spreading peanut butter on the graham crackers before adding the other ingredients.
- Substitute peanut butter cups in place of the chocolate bar.
- Replace the graham crackers with fudge-dipped cookies.
- Add banana slices.

NATIONAL SHAPEWEAR DAY | AUGUST 10
National Shapewear Day on August 10th celebrates the history, current trends, and continued use and evolution of body shaping garments. The day recognizes what has been a long-standing important, and at times, essential, article of clothing building confidence and poise for centuries.
History of Shapewear
The history of shapewear parallels the development of clothed civilization. As far back as Greek and Roman times, evidence exists from archaeological drawings depicting women in corset-like garments. However, during the 16th-century, corsets and shaping undergarments ascended to the status of required fashion. Then, royalty typically led the trends and the current style of the era. Many changes and shifts in clothing fashion accompanied the popular corset – perhaps the most recognizable item in a woman’s ensemble.
Modern Shapewear
Fast forward to the 21st century, and shapewear becomes barely recognizable. Once the constricting, cumbersome, and impractical garments worn by our predecessors, today’s shapewear has transformed. It meets the varied and sophisticated needs of modern society. And it is also created from some of the most advanced materials available. Today, makers construct shapewear out of breathable, flexible, and durable fabrics. Additionally, shapewear comes in almost any style and shapes imaginable. To that point, you can easily custom-fit shapewear to any wardrobe.
Today’s versatile and practical shapewear smooths and supports. It also targets the most stubborn spots on the body. When men and women don business wear, formal attire, or even casual clothes with shapewear beneath, they share a more polished look to the world. The resulting confidence they exude does not go unnoticed. And you can thank their modern supporting shapers! Whatever the occasion, shapewear will have you covered.

Ain't There No More New Orleans
Derby Gisclair
Yesterday’s post on the old Prytania streetcar line prompted a couple of questions regarding the old Prytania Market, located on the narrow strip of land in the 4800 block of Prytania Street between Upperline and Lyons Streets. This photograph by Charles Franck is from The Historic New Orleans Collection.
It was one of dozens of public markets where people could shop for fresh food from local farmers who brought their wares into the markets from the rural land where it was grown and harvested. The city of New Orleans opened the Prytania Market in 1915 and renovated and expanded over the intervening years as demand grew.
In the 1950s the introduction of modern supermarkets attracted consumers and the neighborhood public markets began to close. This building was demolished and the space is now a small public park.

New Orleans - Still There More
Derby Gisclair
Tucked away on Egania Street in the Holy Cross neighborhood in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans are two buildings known as "the steamboat houses."
The first house was constructed in 1905 by riverboat pilot Paul Doullut. Captain Paul Doullut designed "the steamboat houses" to resemble the riverboats he piloted for so many years. It was build facing the Mississippi River where Doullut had spent much of his life guiding ships up and down the river. The house has a wrap-around deck, and the two chimneys were made of metal to resemble smokestacks. The interior hallways were narrow as they might be on board a ship. Every detail was meant to recall the era when steamboats travelled the Mississippi. The top floor resembled the pilot house and offered magnificent views of the Mississippi River.
In 1913, he build an identical house just a block away for his son Paul, Jr.
In a city teeming with interesting and unusual architecture, "the steamboat houses" are among the most unique.

The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans returns to The Marigny Opera House for the first time since 2019 this August 2022 with Tennessee Williams’ glorious gothic drama, SUMMER & SMOKE!
Tennessee Williams’ devastating drama about things that could have been and the things that might never come again. Alma Winemiller (Elizabeth McCoy) is a minister’s daughter who grew up too fast in the shadow of the church and with the responsibility of caring for her demented mother. She pined for the uninhibited, passionate boy next door (Co-Starring Justin Davis) all through her youth, and now he’s returned to his hometown…and the torch Alma holds for him has never burned more brightly. Will her own fire consume her, or will she be smothered by the expectations and repression she’s grown so used to? And what if he’s not still there when she comes around? Will his heat be nothing but smoking cinders come autumn?

Melissa Ginsburg
DOLL APOLLO
Please join us us with author and poet Melissa Ginsburg for a reading and booksigning celebrating her new poetry book, DOLL APOLLO.
“The poems of Doll Apollo chart a fascinating constellation of emotional and spiritual intricacy. Melissa Ginsburg’s virtuosic lyrics sift the fragments of our seemingly divided societal moment to find luminous and enduring connections between technology and faith, mythology and modernity. This book is a marvel of beauty and deep vision.”—Kiki
Petrosino
With lush imagery and surprising syntactical turns, the poems in DOLL APOLLO merge mythology with close attention to the patterns, colors, and contours of the material world. Through the figure of the paper doll, the hoax conspiracy surrounding the Apollo moon landing, and lyrics embedded with violence and beauty, Melissa Ginsburg’s feminist ecopoetics weaves the domestic and celestial into considerations of female identity, desire, spiritual yearning, and doubt. Throughout, DOLL APOLLO remains rooted in scenery and music, as Ginsburg embraces her subjects with humor and verbal and formal play.Melissa Ginsburg is the author of the poetry collection Dear Weather Ghost and the novels The House Uptown and Sunset City. Her poems have appeared in the New Yorker, West Branch, Fence, the Southwest Review, and other magazines. She teaches creative writing and literature at the University of Mississippi and serves as associate editor of Tupelo Quarterly.

So swift is the action, so involved the situations, so rib-tickling the plot in this London hit that at its finish audiences are left as exhausted from laughter as though they had run a foot race. Galloping in and out of the four doors of an English vicarage are an American actor and actress (he is now stationed with the Air Force in England), a cockney maid who has seen too many American movies, an old maid who “touches alcohol for the first time in her life,” four men in clergyman suits presenting the problem of which is which (for disguised as one is an escaped prisoner), and a sedate Bishop aghast at all these goings-on and the trumped up stories they tell him. Sat, Aug 13
6:00pm
Don your soiled white linen from the weekend before for the annual gallery stroll through Royal Street Arts District
Enjoy an evening with 30 galleries located in the French Quarter in New Orleans for Dirty Linen Night.
Experience REAL New Orleans Culture while walking the streets of the French Quarter and experiencing all of the art, food and drinks that this city has to offer.
This year Dirty Linen Night celebrates its 19th year on Royal Street. After passing through many organizations and planning committees over the 19 years, the event has landed safely back in the arms of the shops and galleries along Royal Street under the planning of the newly formed Royal Street Arts District since 2017. The RSAD is a nonprofit organization that plans and executes Dirty Linen Night each year with the galleries and shops playing host to visitors and locals that want a dash of art, a taste of good food, and some cocktails.
Born as a satirical play on White Linen Night, DLN invites participants to relish in everything dirty, and is the one event that celebrates the not so pristine side of the French Quarter.
Galleries and shops along Royal Street open their doors and play host to visitors as musicians line the streets and the party feels never ending.
The event has grown to include some galleries and shops off of Royal Street and has expanded from the 300 block of Royal to 1100 block.
Slated as one of the best events in the French Quarter, DLN has grown in the past three years to be ranked with some of the major events on the New Orleans calendar.

Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday through June!
Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

PAN AM FLIGHT 759 SCREENING
Jefferson Parish Library
|
Pan Am Flight 759, a documentary by filmmaker Royd Anderson, will be screened twice at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 Napoleon, Metairie, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the crash.
The screening will occur at 6:30 p.m. on . Wednesday, Aug. 24.
The extra screenings are occurring because of the overwhelming popularity of the documentary. A previous screening on Saturday, July 9 during an estimated crowd of 175, some of whom could not get into the room to view the documentary.
screening is free of charge and open to the public. Registration is not required. The filmmaker will be present at the screenings.
Pan Am Flight 759 crashed less than one minute after it took off on a stormy afternoon from New Orleans International Airport on July 9, 1982, killing all 146 people on board and eight people on the ground. The Boeing 727 jet plowed into south Kenner’s Morningside Park neighborhood. At the time, it was the nation’s second-deadliest crash.
Pan Am 759 was a regularly scheduled passenger flight from Miami to Las Vegas, with a stop in New Orleans. At the time of Flight 759's takeoff on July 9, 1982, there were thunderstorms over the east end of the airport. Microburst wind shear caused by that afternoon's powerful thunderstorm was blamed for the catastrophe, with the plane rapidly losing altitude almost immediately after taking off. The crash helped spur the development of sophisticated equipment incorporating Doppler radar to detect wind shear.
Royd Anderson specializes in documentary films pertaining to tragic events in Louisiana that he says are overlooked by historians. In 2006, Anderson wrote and directed the documentary The Luling Ferry Disaster for his master's degree thesis project in communication at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The film recounts the story of the worst ferry disaster in U.S. history in which 77 lives were lost.

ANNOUNCING CULTURE COLLISION 12!
ANNUAL FREE ARTS & CULTURE SHOWCASE RETURNS IN 2022 AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS
WWNO 89.9 FM and Jefferson Performing Arts Society are partnering to bring back Culture Collision! After a two-year pandemic hiatus, Culture Collision 12 returns on Wednesday, September 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie. The last Culture Collision event was held in August 2019.
Culture Collision is an annual showcase for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in the New Orleans metro-area. Ranging from the city’s classic arts institutions to its resourceful contemporary newcomers, this happy hour event reflects the diversity of the region’s creative community. The event is free and open to the public—and for this “comeback year”, the fee for organizations to reserve a display table have been waived. Over 60 local arts and culture companies are expected to join, with several of the participating organizations presenting live entertainment.
“From its beginning in 2008, Culture Collision’s aim has been to introduce all kinds of art and cultural activity to people from all parts of the metro area,” said WWNO General Manager, Paul Maassen. “WWNO is delighted that Culture Collision 2022 will carry on this mission and highlight our region’s newest investment in the arts, the Jefferson Performing Arts Center.”
This beloved community arts event is making its debut in Jefferson Parish after over a decade in New Orleans, where it was held at renowned cultural venues such as The National World War Two Museum, The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), The Ogden Museum, and New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).
In July 2022, Jefferson Performing Arts Society was named as the new managers of Jefferson Performing Arts Center. “Our hosting of Culture Collision aligns with our goal to build a wider array of presentations and programming at this gorgeous gem of a venue. We look forward to welcoming arts and cultural organizations of all genres and their audiences here in September to show them all that we have to offer and to let them know that our doors are always open to new opportunities and partnerships,” said Todd Simmons, General Manager of Jefferson Performing Arts Center and Executive Director of Jefferson Performing Arts Society.
Jefferson Performing Arts Center is located at 6400 Airline Drive near the former Zephyr Stadium, not far from the Saints training camp and next to LaSalle Park. Parking in the Jefferson Performing Arts Center adjacent lot is free.
