NATIONAL WAFFLE IRON DAY JUNE 29
Waffle lovers finally have their day of recognition on June 29th as they celebrate National Waffle Iron Day. Some people enjoy their waffles plain with syrup, but we like ours topped with berries, whipped cream, too. Who knew a simple machine would make such a big impact on our lives!

The waffle iron is usually two honeycomb-patterned metal plates hinged together. A person pours or places the batter between the heated plates and then closes it to bake the waffle. Other patterns waffle off and on the market reflecting pop culture so we can make waffles shaped into famous animated characters and iconic logos.
Waffle irons got their start in the 14th century in the Low Countries. Even the earliest designs that were used over an open fire would have elaborate designs such as coats of arms and religious symbols.
To waffle means to waver between decisions. Similar words with this meaning include flip-flop or yo-yo which also have National Days on the calendar!
The first patent in the USA for a waffle iron was in 1869, submitted by Cornelius Swarthout. In 1911, General Electric produced a prototype electric waffle iron. The first electric waffle iron was available to the general public in 1918.

Queen Nefertari’s Egypt
New Orleans Museum of Art

Public

The queen is coming.  "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.

Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.

Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

The New Orleans Jazz Museum and Jazz Foundation of America present a performance featuring Steve Pistorius on Wednesday, June 29th at 2:00 pm CDT.
This program takes place inside our third floor Performance Center, listening room. Admission is free and open to the public, seating is limited and offered first come, first serve. Learn more about our program admission policy.
Steve Pistorius has the distinction of being the only living New Orleanian who specializes in early Jazz piano. Whether playing solo or leading a band, he creates joyful and swinging renditions of oft-neglected rags, waltzes, marches, pop tunes, blues and stomps.
Love of the music turned into a lifetime profession in 1973. Steve answered an ad for a five nights a week gig, winning the spot by default as no one else showed up for the audition. Mentored and influenced since then by musicians like Neil Unterseher, Armand Hug, Jeanette Kimball, Morton Gunnar Larsen, Butch Thompson, Burt Bales, Don Ewell, Max Morath and Eubie Blake, Steve has developed his own unique piano style.
Steve’s career highlights include performing in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Apollo Theatre, One Mo’ Time and the Pope’s Square in Belo Horizontes, Brazil. Steve has toured the South Pacific, Far East, Europe, Scandinavia, South America (including the Galapagos Islands) and the Middle East. He has toured with his own band and with notable bandleaders such as Duke Heitger, John Gill, Michael White, Orange Kellin, Banu Gibson, Mark Braud, Wendell Brunious, Hal Smith, Chris Tyle and Leon Redbone.

NATIONAL PARCHMENT DAY | LSDT WEDNESDAY IN JUNE
At the end of June each year, National Parchment Day brings innovation and convenience to the kitchen.

While adding convenience, parchment also infuses flavor, locks in moisture, and preserves vital nutrients. It has also long been a part of the traditional French kitchen. Ever versatile, parchment easily transitions from skillet to oven and from the grill to the table. Its ability to be elegant and useful makes it one of the more effective tools in the kitchen.
en Papillote
en papillote: a cooking style where the food is wrapped in paper
Cooking en papillote enhances natural flavors without synthetic sprays and high-fat oils. Culinary parchment also simplifies preparation and clean-up and is a much healthier and environmentally friendlier alternative to traditional cooking techniques. For centuries, the French have cooked with parchment using the en papillote technique, perfecting taste and texture along the way. As a result, parchment has long served as their secret to preparing wholesome, healthy meals.
With all these added benefits, how could you ignore what parchment brings to the kitchen and the table? And let’s not forget the variety of parchment products that make composing delicious meals in the home kitchen a culinary success.
National Almond Buttercrunch Day is an annual event that is celebrated on June 29 every year. It is a day that commemorates the much-loved dessert topping, the different ways in which it is prepared, and the unique ways of enjoying it in different regions of the country. People love to sprinkle it on cakes and sweets while others love adding it to their coffee. Whichever way you like to have it, National Almond Buttercrunch Day is not a day to be missed.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL ALMOND BUTTERCRUNCH DAY
Buttercrunch is a type of hard candy that is often had as a standalone dessert or to garnish other desserts. It uses a simple recipe that combines toffee, chocolate, and sugar to give a luxurious texture to your desserts. Adding almonds to the mix enhances the texture by making it richer and grainier.
Since butter is the main ingredient in almond buttercrunch, it is believed that the candy originated in Northern Europe, which is known for its rich and ancient butter-making traditions. During the 19th century, sugar was more easily available, so the approximate date of the origin of buttercrunch can be placed in the early 19th century.
In the United States, almond buttercrunch became commercially available in the early 20th century since, by that time, the technology for mass production of hard candy had become quite widespread. Moreover, people were fond of this dessert, which was popular across the Atlantic as well. Nowadays, with the spread of online food channels and the popular appeal of homely desserts, many people are being drawn to handmade toffee and buttercrunch.
Celebrating National Almond Buttercrunch Day is a cultural tradition and it provides an opportunity to learn about how the techniques of making it have evolved over more than a century ago. The exact year when National Almond Buttercrunch Day was first celebrated is not documented, which makes it hard to know how far this tradition extends. However, given the fact that it continues to be celebrated today, we can be sure that it is a much-loved part of American culture.

Rivers, one of only three Jazz musicians ever known to play the bagpipes, would probably call himself a saxophonist, but his forte is really an amazing musical dexterity that has helped him master a dozen other instruments.

Joshua’s passion for sharpening started with marine life-saving equipment, which required the near constant use of a work knife, and quickly expanded into other blades. There are few things as satisfying as effortlessly slicing through an onion or tomato in preparation of a great New Orleans meal — so don’t forget to bring your knives with you the next time you come to shop at our Tuesday or Thursday market!

Monthlong P.O.W.E.R. Plates Women’s Fundraising Program Begins Friday, July 1

NEW ORLEANS — Fidelity Bank and the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation (LHF) will celebrate women in the hospitality industry again this summer with their annual launch of the unique women’s fundraising program P.O.W.E.R. Plates on July 1, 2022. .

The monthlong celebration of women in the state’s hospitality industry is part of Fidelity’s “Potential of Women Entrepreneurs Realized” (P.O.W.E.R.) program, which caters to thousands of female-owned businesses. Currently, program officials are seeking women-owned, women-managed or women-led restaurants and bars to participate in the annual fundraising program. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and drive business to women-led restaurants in South Louisiana during the slow summer business months.

“The hospitality industry in Louisiana and its workers are vital to our state. P.O.W.E.R. Plates’ mission is to help support this critical industry by driving business to these women-led restaurants.” said Elizabeth Broekman, Fidelity Bank Vice President and Director of P.O.W.E.R. “In addition, we are raising awareness of the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation’s mission of supporting Louisiana’s hospitality industry workforce during times of personal crisis for our workers in such a vital industry.”

The Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and Fidelity Bank are matching donations up to $2,500 for this year’s program. After a record 67 restaurants and bars participated in 2021, officials have set a goal of recruiting 75 restaurants throughout South Louisiana. Neat Wine is the participating wine sponsor and a special beer for the program was released by Port Orleans Brewery.

“Women in the Louisiana hospitality industry have a tremendous impact in our lives any time we go out for a meal, a drink or stay in a hotel,” said Fidelity Bank President and CEO Chris Ferris. “Programs like Fidelity Bank’s P.O.W.E.R. program are crucial in bringing women to the forefront and highlighting their successes and P.O.W.E.R. Plates is the perfect way to showcase these amazing women.”

Downtown attractions
offer free admission
first Sunday of every month
Visitors to downtown Baton Rouge are given access to the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum, Magnolia Mound, the LSU Museum of Art and Old State Capitol for free on the first Sunday of every month.
With most attractions only a short walk from each other downtown, an entire day can be centered around a fun, affordable outing.
“It’s been going on for 10 years, at least,” said Paul Arrigo, President and CEO of Visit Baton Rouge. “The museums are relatively inexpensive to begin with, but I think the fact that they’re open to the public and free on that first Sunday is really significant.”
Arrigo, who has served in his position for over 20 years believes First Free Sunday is a great opportunity for locals and visitors alike to take in the sights of Baton Rouge.

The Louisiana Arts and Science Museum
Admittance to the museum costs adult patrons $12 if they aren’t visiting on the First Free Sunday. The museum is open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.
The museum seeks to further the understanding and appreciation of art and science to the general public and features a wide array of exhibits, from Ancient Egypt to the Solar System and the cosmos.
Patrons admitted on the First Free Sunday will also have unlimited viewing access to the facility’s planetarium.
In addition to the museum's permanent exhibits, the museum is also featuring these changing exhibits:
In Empathy We Trust— An exhibit that reimagines the characters from iconic works of art history with different identities, races and genders; through October 30
Iridescence— As one’s perspectives changes, so is the color they perceive when something is iridescent; through July 31
Our Louisiana— A broad collection of items tied to Louisiana that ask, “what is art?”; through Jan. 14, 2024
Magnolia Mound
As the only place not within walking distance of the other First Free Sunday venues, it should probably be done first or last.

Magnolia Mound is a special BREC park that used to be a 900 acre plantation. The park is open from 1-4 p.m. on Sundays and would usually cost adult patrons $12 for guided tours or $5 for a self-guided tour.
Once inside the park, visitors can explore the grounds and see the Historic House Museum, the Open-Hearth Kitchen, a Pigeoneer, Housing for Enslaved Families, the Overseer’s House and the three-seat Privy.
A rare example of vernacular architecture brought by settlers from France and the West Indies, the grounds hopes to illustrate the unique French-Creole culture which is definitive to Louisiana while also accounting and accrediting the generations of enslaved people that once lived on and labored the grounds.
The LSU Museum of Art at the Shaw Center for the Arts
The LSU MoA’s humble beginnings in Memorial Tower seem far-fetched compared to the floor they operate now.
The art museum is open 1-5 p.m. on Sundays and would usually charge adult guests a $5 entry fee.
Local artists are supported and showcased by the LSU MoA, but they also feature art of regional and national significance as the museum seeks to bolden Louisiana’s place in the wide world of art.
The LSU MoA is currently exhibiting:
Eugene Martin: The Creative Act— An exhibit that focuses on Martin’s unique brand of whimsical, automatist abstract art; through October 2
Art in Louisiana: Views into the Collection— The reinstallation of the museum’s signature exhibition has been on display since 2016, as different curators offer different views in the strengths of the museum’s collections; ongoing

The Louisiana Old State Capitol
The Old State Capitol is open to the public for free, year-round, not just on First Free Sunday.
Recently renovated, the Old State Capitol features a museum and preserved chambers for guests to inspect. A detailed Huey P. Long exhibit is one of the highlights of a visit.
Visitors can book tours of the Old State Capitol. Tickets for a special movie called “Ghosts of the Castle” are available for $3.
When going up the main staircase, don’t forget to look up into the beautiful stained glass skylight.
Arrigo recommends that students invite friends and family to take advantage of First Free Sunday when they’re in town visiting.
He said that the COVID-19 years were tough, but Baton Rouge is bouncing back.
The next free Sunday will be July 3.

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

A Chocolate and Champagne Tasting with live music, a live competition for the BEST chocolate creation, raffles and more…

Be a part of the fight against breast cancer while enjoying a feast for the senses. Join Krewe de Pink for their third annual Death by Chocolate…NOT Breast Cancer fundraiser as we honor this year’s Six Sweet Survivors: Caitron Gladow, Chontel Carter Frank, Maria Cordero Stambaugh, Dianne Honore, Grace Landry, Lena Stewart and our 1st ever In Memory Sweet Survivor, Aline Schoen (posthumously).
Krewe de Pink, in partnership with Delgado Community College’s Culinary and Pastry Arts Program and Jacob Schoen & Son, has created a chocolate and champagne tasting event like no other. Twelve tasty chocolate bites —both sweet and savory— will be created by the students with chocolate donated by Callebaut Chocolate, home of the finest Belgian chocolate.
Guests will enjoy the scrumptious chocolate creations* with bubbly** which has been graciously provided by Josh Wine Cellars. Live music will be performed by the Delgado Jazz Combo. There will be raffles to include a stunning pair of Diamond Earrings donated by Diamonds Direct as well as a Champagne basket. A fabulous pink photo station for guests will be available for guests to capture the moment. As a thank you, guests will receive a chocolate treat as a takeaway compliments of Delgado Community College and Callebaut.
The event is a live competition. Each student will be judged by guests and local chefs on their chocolate-inspired dishes with 1st and 2nd Place in both the People’s Choice and Judges Choice Awards. Scholarships and cash prizes are being awarded for each category.
VIP ticket holders will enjoy exclusive access to the event with a 5:30 pm entry to mingle with the local celebrity chefs and the 2022 Sweet Survivors and get special takeaways. General admission entry is at 6:30 pm. Tickets are limited, go on sale June 12th, 2022 and sell out in advance of the event. Cannot make the event but want to support breast cancer research? Saturday, July 9 | Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue
Sometimes called “The Punk Rock Patsy Cline”, “The Gal” is Vanessa Niemann, an Appalachian-born songstress and with the Honky Tonk Revue in tow, this band offers a vanguard approach to country music. Evocative songwriting and an infectious sound make this a rollicking, toe-tapping musical ruckus.

Saturday, July 16 | Arséne DeLay
American singer-songwriter Arséne DeLay glides through jazz, R&B, blues, rock and roll, funk, and folk. With a musical family legacy recalling New Orleans’ most storied melodic contributors, Arsene pays homage to her heritage through her constant authentic musicianship.

Saturday, July 23 | Lynn Drury
Local New Orleans musician Lynn Drury has performed her unique style of roots rock on most of the stages across the city. At once personal with a voice distinct, Drury is bringing definitive New Orleans Americana to the Jazz & Heritage Summer Concert Series
Tickets are $10. All proceeds from this concert series directly support efforts of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins promptly at 8 p.m. Seating is limited, so please register in advance here.

This long-running last-Friday-of-the-month event closes the 200 to 500 blocks of Columbia Street, providing lots of opportuni4es for fun on foot. The classic car people and the shop owners will be handing out goodies accordingly, plus live music at local venues. Shops and restaurants open late, too. 6 pm–9 pm. Free. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Covington will be out in full force, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, beverages, and snacks to raise funds for its many charitable efforts. “ Our block party brings people from across a Tri-Parish area, to show and see classic cars. To me it’s a boost to the economy in an otherwise slow season,” says Cliff Bergeron, Covington Business Associa4on
