NATIONAL BEST FRIENDS DAY | June 8
On June 8th, honor your closest and dearest friend on Best Friends Day. The relationship between best friends is often fierce and can withstand distance, storms and silence. Whether we’ve known them all our lives or they are more recently acquired, best friends make tough times bearable, fun times memorable, and memorable times priceless.
When it comes to best friends, they run the gamut. They may be exactly like us or our complete opposite. According to a Pew Research poll, 98% of teens have one or more close friends. And 78% of them say they have one to five close friends. (Pew 2018) However, as we move into adulthood, our friendship-making ability changes, along with our priorities.
Whether our best friends are from childhood or later in life varies. But one thing is sure: best friends smooth over the rough edges in life and make the rest of it quite interesting.
No matter how many best friends surround you, get together and celebrate the day!

NEW ORLEANS WINE & FOOD EXPERIENCE ANNOUNCES ITS INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION RESULTS
General Public Sampling Takes Place at the NOWFE Grand Tastings and Vinola
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA—The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience has announced the winners of the NOWFE International Wine Competition. Nearly 170 wines from every corner of America and across the globe were represented in 25 categories. Best of Show, Gold, silver, and bronze awards were bestowed on 68 wines based on varietal components and vinification styles (sparkling, still, dry, sweet, pure varietals, screwcaps, corks, bottles, and cans).
Eleven wine experts from New Orleans and an Auburn University culinary department head served on the judging panel. Each judge swirled, sniffed, viewed, and tasted every wine entered in the competition. "We are honored that so many wineries from around the world took place in our wine competition," said Aimee Brown, NOWFE Executive Director. "And we wish to thank our judges for their time and efforts in making this a success, and also the Four Seasons for hosting us."
The one day-long exercise of judging each wine was extended to a second day of evaluations, during which all gold award wines were re-evaluated for the top award of Best of Show. The judges chose one red and one white to receive this top billing.
The Best of Show winners are:
White—Gautreau Family Estate Wines Eola-Amity Hills Chardonnay 2020
Red—Flambeaux Wine Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Gold, silver, and bronze award winners are listed here: www.nowfe.com/wine-competition
The state with the highest number of entries was California, which currently reflects wine sales in America. Wines from Oregon, Washington, Virginia, Texas, New Jersey, Connecticut, Louisiana, and Missouri, as well as France, Italy, Austria, and Spain, were represented.
Several participants of the inaugural NOWFE International Wine Competition will offer samples of each wine at Vinola at the Four Seasons on Thursday, June 9, 2-4:30pm and at the Grand Tastings at the Sugar Mill on Friday, June 10, 6-9 pm, and Saturday, June 11, 2-5 pm.

Queen Nefertari’s Egypt
New Orleans Museum of Art
|
Public
The queen is coming. "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.
Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

Les Getrex & Creole Cookin presented by The Jazz Foundation of America
- Wednesday, June 8, 2022
- 2:00 PM 3:00 PM
- New Orleans Jazz Museum
- 400 Esplanade Ave.New OrleansUnited States
The New Orleans Jazz Museum and Jazz Foundation of America present a performance featuring Les Getrex & Creole Cookin on Wednesday, June 8th at 2:00 pm CDT.
There is nothing more refreshing than listening to a singer who can really sing. Listening to Les Getrex sing is like having a long cool drink on a hot day. It soothes and refreshes the soul. For more than thirty years, Les has been entertaining people with his own soulful interpretation of the blues. His playful style and natural ability draw his audiences into every performance.
Les grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, the fourth of five children, in the musically rich neighborhood of the Sixth Ward. Music has always been an integral part of his life – from belting out soul wrenching spirituals in church to playing the trumpet in the school band.
When he was in his early twenties, Les heard Jimi Hendrix play, and that performance inspired him to learn how to play the guitar. Les is completely self taught on the guitar. His natural musical abilities drew the attention of a neighbor who asked Les to join his band, playing lead guitar. Les joined the band Burnt Toast and Coffee and his musical career was launched; a career that has now spanned decades and continents, and has provided the soundtrack for music lovers around the world.
Les has shared the stage with musical icons like Johnny Adams, Ernie K-Doe, Barbara George, Marva Wright, Lee Dorsey, and Walter "Wolfman" Washington and the Roadmasters. Les also played with Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame legend, Antoine "Fats" Domino throughout the United States and abroad from 1984 to 1992. He gave international audiences a taste of the bayou while playing with the late Zydeco King, Rockin' Dopsie and the Zydeco Twisters. They were featured in the 1983 film classic Delta Heat. Les has performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, Umbria Jazz Summer Festival, and headlined at Days of Blues Guitar. Each year Les plays at jazz and blues festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe.
You can follow Les on Facebook, as he continues to leave audiences around the world spellbound.

NATIONAL NAME YOUR POISON DAY | JUNE 8
National Name Your Poison Day on June 8th places a few options before you and challenges you to choose. In this case, the idiom can be a cautionary one or it could be your bartender’s way of asking you what you want to drink.
Daily National Republican in Washington, D.C. reported in its March 24, 1864 edition, “The latest fashion in Washington of asking a party what they will take to drink is – ‘Please nominate your poison, gentlemen.'” The story made its rounds to newspapers across the country and by 1867 writers attributed the colloquial term to folks in Indiana.
While “nominate your poison” harkens back to the early days of the temperance movement, the phrase seems to have been used mostly to describe the action of ordering the drink. Even in 1914 as the mayor of New Bavaria, Ohio proposed a law requiring all drinkers to apply for drinking licenses, the phrase was popular. The phrase comes in many forms – pick, choose, or name – and of course nominate your poison.

NATIONAL UPSY DAISY DAY | JUNE 8
Each year on June 8th, National Upsy Daisy Day is set aside to encourage you to face the day positively and to get up ‘gloriously, gratefully and gleefully’ each morning.
#UpsyDaisyDay
Every day is a gift and if we remember that as we rise each morning, it will help us carry a good attitude throughout the day, whatever the day may bring us. Life is full of challenges and bumps in the road, and it is our attitude that helps us over the bumps and through the challenges to move onward with a smile.
Give it a try. Be grateful and thankful for what you do have such as a bed to sleep in, food to eat, friends, and family. Try a smile and see how it feels. It may surprise you that it feels good on the inside also and how other people will smile back. You may just brighten up their day! Upsy Daisy!

The firm Deansgate, Inc. was formally established on August 5, 1927, although its roots date back to 1892 as Famous-Sternberg, Inc. Originally located at 2537 Tulane Avenue, the clothing manufacturer relocated to 950 Poeyfarre Street in July 1936, leasing 100,000 square feet in the former Maginnis Cotton Mill on the corner of Annunciation Street that ran all the way to Calliope Street.
By 1937 there were five factories in New Orleans that manufactured lightweight clothing – Famous-Sternberg, Leon Godchaux, Haspel Brothers, Hirsch and Beat, and A. Solomon – employing more than 2,000 people and racking up annual sales of $4,000,000 (about $80 million today) in cotton “wash” suits – white duck and seersucker suits now so familiar to New Orleanians. Prices ranged from $5 to $15 based on the material and quality of the tailoring.
In 1968 the company changed its name to Deansgate and began marketing under that brand across the city to stores ranging from Maison Blanche and D. H. Holmes to Perlis and Zoller and continued to serve a national clientele. They made clothing under their own brand name but also produced items for stores under the store’s private label. The company was hard hit by the 1982 recession and the influx of clothing manufactured overseas. They landed a $10 million contract to produce 150,000 dress coats for the military, but it wasn’t enough to keep the enterprise afloat. The business was closed, and the equipment auctioned off in June 1992 and liquidated a year later.
The building was converted into condominiums in 1996.

Since 1915 New Orleanians have been treated to the Roman Candy Man rolling through their neighborhood in his mule-drawn wagon. Roman Candy is another name for salt water taffy, probably resulting from someone's failed attempt in 1923 to trademark the name "salt water taffy." The Roman Candy Man usually sold three flavors -- chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
Salt water taffy is made by stretching or pulling a sticky combination of boiled sugar, butter or vegetable oil, flavorings, and colorings until tiny air bubbles are produced, making it a light, fluffy and chewy candy. Despite its name, seawater is not used in making salt water taffy.

Local Whistling Champ Terry Rappold
Talks about an Under-rated Form of Music
METAIRIE, LA – Terry Rappold, a two-time whistling International Grand Champion, will speak about whistling and whistling competitions at two Jefferson Parish Libraries: 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, at the North Kenner Library, 630 Esplanade, Kenner, and 7 p.m., Thursday, June 16, at the Belle Terre Library, 5550 Belle Terre Road, Marrero.
This presentation is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.
Rappold will discuss whistling as a form of communication as well as its use in sport. He will discuss superstitions associated with whistling. He will whistle and he will help others who have “whistling issues.”
He has a theory about whistling. “Whistling, like all forms of music, is an expression of the soul. However, whistling does not have the advantage of utilizing words to convey the message or express emotion. Performers who whistle have to dig deep within themselves to bring forth the emotion the song is portraying. As such, whistling as an art is a deep expression of the soul which resonates with the audience. It is, in general, an uplifting emotional experience to the listener.”
Rappold has won almost two dozen whistling awards in international competitions, including being named Grand Champion, Men’s Division, in 2007 and 2011 at the International Whistlers Convention. His CD, “WhiSOULing,” was produced in 2007. He has appeared on numerous news programs, including CBS News Sunday with Charles Osgood in 2003.
Terry Rappold and his jazz group perform at festivals, community concerts, weddings, sporting events, funding-raising events, parties, piano bars, nightclubs, and TV-radio commercials. During the day, Rappold serves as chief executive officer for Premier Source Inc., Premier Hospitality Solutions, and Premier Stone Services.

Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday at Zony Mash!
Zony Mash Beer Project

Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday through June!
Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down
