Citywide COVID-19 Vaccine Waitlist Updated with New Eligibility Criteria
|
NEW ORLEANS — In conjunction with Governor John Bel Edwards' announcement expanding COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to people 16 years of age and older with certain health conditions, the City of New Orleans has updated the Citywide Vaccine Waitlist registration to reflect the new criteria.
This afternoon, the roughly 10,000 individuals who were previously ineligible will be contacted and asked to update their registration to determine if they are newly eligible under the expanded criteria announced by the Governor today. The Orleans Parish Communication District (New Orleans 9-1-1/3-1-1) will continue to connect eligible waitlist members to vaccine appointments, whether at the Convention Center, at a New Orleans Health Department vaccine site, or with another vaccine provider in Orleans Parish.
Vaccine operations remain ongoing in Orleans Parish, where dozens of providers are offering all three approved vaccines by appointment only. New Orleans Emergency Medical Services also continue to administer vaccine in the homes of residents who are homebound. Homebound means anyone who is unable to get to a vaccination site due to mobility or medical issues. A person is not considered homebound solely because of transportation needs. If you have questions about eligibility or would like to schedule a vaccine appointment for a homebound individual, please contact 3-1-1.
The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness will continue to recruit, train, and manage NOLA Ready volunteers who are supporting in non-medical roles at vaccine sites around the city. In the past few weeks, hundreds of NOLA Ready Volunteers have spent nearly 4,000 hours working on vaccine efforts, including staffing vaccine sites, making appointments for residents at the 3-1-1 call center, and helping with community outreach. There will be an ongoing need for volunteers

vaccine eligibility expands to people 16+ with certain health conditions
|
Gov. John Bel Edwards said Tuesday people age 16 and older with certain health conditions are now eligible to receive the coronavirus vaccine, a dramatic expansion in Louisiana's effort to overcome the pandemic.
The announcement comes a day after state health officials began notifying pharmacies of the new vaccine priority groups, which includes adults of all ages who meet specific criteria that put them at increased risk for severe illness from the novel coronavirus.
Among those who would qualify for the vaccine, according to an email sent to independent pharmacies, are individuals 16 and older for Pfizer vaccine or 18 and older for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines with the following conditions:
- moderate to severe asthma
- cerebrovascular disease
- cystic fibrosis
- hypertension or high blood pressure
- immunocompromised state from blood or bone marrow transplant, immune deficiencies, HIV, use of corticosteroids or use of other immune weakening medicines
- neurologic conditions, such as dementia
- liver disease
- overweight
- pulmonary fibrosis
- thalassemia
- type 1 diabetes mellitus
Vaccines would also be available to anyone in the same age group who works in a congregate living facility, such as a jail, shelter or group home, according to the email.
A new medical risk factor self-attestation form was uploaded to the Louisiana Department of Health website on Monday with criteria similar to that outlined in the LIPA email, according to a reader-submitted screenshot. It has since been removed from the website.
The form included all of the criteria outlined in the LIPA email, along with additional medical conditions that would qualify the same age group for the vaccine, including:
- cancer
- chronic kidney disease
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- down syndrome
- heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies
- immunocompromised state from solid organ transplant
- obesity or severe obesity
- pregnancy
- sickle cell disease
- smoking
- type 2 diabetes mellitus
The new eligibility group would significantly increase the number of people who are eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines in Louisiana.

CDC releases guidelines for fully vaccinated Americans
|
Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released its recommendations for the fully vaccinated:
Fully vaccinated people are able to gather indoors with those who’re also fully vaccinated.
If they’re two weeks past their final shot, fully vaccinated people can visit indoors with unvaccinated members of a single household at low risk, without wearing a mask or maintaining social distance.
Fully vaccinated people must also wear a mask and keep a distance when around unvaccinated people from multiple households.
The CDC guidelines say that although there’s less risk at the gym or restaurants for fully vaccinated people, they should continue to take precautions as these areas have higher chances of having non-vaccinated people.

Mystery in Motion: Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras
|
|
Mardi Gras exhibit opens; virtual events planned
|
In addition to a stunning exhibit in the Presbytere, there also are several virtual programs offered in connection with the program.
This new exhibition inside the Presbytère on Jackson Square examines the direct influence of multicultural spirituality within the carnival traditions of Black New Orleanians. Due to the pandemic, you will not find many Black masking Indians on the streets this carnival season, but you will see their elaborate suits and learn about their use and inspiration inside the museum’s galleries. The exhibit will be on display in time for the Mardi Gras weekend, from February 15, 2021, through November 28, 2021, and will serve as the centerpiece of the museum’s planned programming to celebrate the 2021 carnival season.
“Mystery in Motion is a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the vibrant carnival traditions of the Black community in New Orleans and it offers an excellent way to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during this current pandemic,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
Mystery in Motion guest curators Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., and Ron Bechet of Xavier University of Louisiana explore spirituality in Mardi Gras through the presentation of more than two dozen Black masking Indian suits, carnival costumes, and masking objects produced in New Orleans, juxtaposed with extraordinary African artifacts that are representative of the cultures, religions, and artistry that influenced their creation. These exceptional African objects will be on loan from the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac and Southern University at New Orleans.
“There is so much happening on Mardi Gras day, it is impossible to take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences. The intent of the exhibition is to offer an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual dimensions of African American Mardi Gras masking that are hidden in plain view,” said Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D.
Additionally, several virtual events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition that are free and open to the public:

History of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues Class
Wednesdays,
March 10, 17 & 24
4 p.m. Zoom
$45 members | $60 general admission
|
Professor, musician, and tour guide Dr. Charles Chamberlain will host this engaging three-part class on the long and storied history of Rhythm and Blues in New Orleans (R&B). From the R&B epicenter of Rampart Street and Matassa’s Studio to the hits of Little Richard, New Orleans was one of the most successful cities in putting out R&B hits starting in the 1950s. By the 1970s though, the city and the studios had a major downturn in hits, but the legacies of Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew and Lloyd Price still looms large on the New Orleans music scene. Dr. Chamberlain will analyze over 6 hours of class time the rise, fall and legacy of R&B in New Orleans.
Can’t make the class? No Problem! A Zoom link will be provided after the class and participants can watch the class for 30 days after each session.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been a mainstay in the New Orleans music scene since the early 1960s. He cut his teeth backing up some of the best singers and performers in New Orleans history including Lee Dorsey, Johnny Adams, and Irma Thomas before putting together his long time band The Roadmasters, who have been burning down and burning up local and national stages since their first gigs in the 1980s. This new record confirms what fans have known for years: Walter “Wolfman Washington has soul to go along with that fire.

Harrah’s New Orleans to Expand and Become Caesars
A property-wide renovation will accompany a new hotel tower, bringing total accommodations to nearly 800.
|
The only land-based casino hotel in the Big Easy, Harrah’s New Orleans will add a second guest-room tower and undergo a refurbishment of the entire property, including its 47,000 square feet of meeting space. The result will be an early 2024 unveiling of the new Caesars New Orleans. Total cost of the project: $325 million.
The 115,000-square-foot casino opened in 1999, while the original 450-room hotel opened in 2006 across Poydras Street. Now, a 340-room tower is being built above the casino while several new restaurants are coming to the public space. Further, the property’s 47,000 square feet of event space will be modernized and upgraded. That area includes the 4,100-square-foot Vieux Carre Ballroom (pictured here) that’s divisible by two and features an outdoor balcony overlooking the 21,000-square-foot Fulton Street Promenade. The Promenade itself can be used for a reception or special event for up to 2,000 people. There’s also an ornate 520-seat theater plus six breakout rooms ranging in size from 355 to 1,436 square feet. For special events, the Masquerade Club is a 5,100-square-foot lounge with a 42-foot media tower that can project a sophisticated light show throughout the space.
The property is on the eastern edge of the French Quarter, on the same block as the 400-room Le Meridien New Orleans and the 285-room Loews New Orleans. It’s two blocks from the 1,700-room Hilton New Orleans Riverside and the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, and six blocks from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

NATIONAL PACK YOUR LUNCH DAY
National Pack Your Lunch Day on March 10 encourages everyone across the country to take their lunch to work, school or where ever they’re spending the day. It’s an opportunity to revitalize lunchtime with fresh and healthful meal choices.
Packing your lunch has benefits you may not expect. One of the immediate benefits is savings. Many home-prepared lunches cost less than ordering off the take-out menu or eating out. Another benefit of making your own lunch is controlling portion sizes and ingredients. By adding fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your lunches, they will be healthier, too.
- Mickey Mouse was the first licensed character to appear on a lunchbox in 1935.
- The 1950 Hopalong Cassidy lunchbox was the first lunchbox based on a television show.
While some foods pack well for lunch, others don’t fare so well. If you’re new to packing lunches, check out this starter list:
- Hardboiled egg – provides a serving of protein
- peeled and placed in a separate container
- Fresh vegetables – choose a dipping sauce like ranch or balsamic vinegar
- carrots sticks, celery sticks, sliced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes
- Whole fruit – apple, orange, banana, grapes, berries
- Yogurt – provides a serving of dairy
- Salad – prepared with deli meats of your choosing
- place dressing in a separate container
- Cheese
- Crackers
- Nuts
You will want to include a gel pack to keep your food chilled until lunchtime, even if you’re reheating leftovers.

NATIONAL BLUEBERRY POPOVER DAY
What better way to start March 10th than with National Blueberry Popover Day? Popovers are airy rolls that puff up when baked, popping over the edge of the tin. They are light and crispy on the outside while the insides are warm and often hollow. They can be filled with custards, creams, and fruits for a sweet treat, especially blueberries.
Popovers are similar to Yorkshire pudding and can also be served with savory combinations.
Most popover recipes are made using mostly eggs, milk, flour and salt. When making popovers, using eggs and milk that are at room temperature produces the best result. The resulting batter is thin but has enough air it that when it bakes the steam expands the batter, causing it to puff up and pop over the tin. The egg proteins help the pastry hold its shape and eventually the crust turns flaky and golden.
** 1850 – The oldest known reference to popovers in a letter of E.E. Stuart.
** 1876 – The first cookbook with a popover recipe was Practical Cooking by M.N. Henderson.

The French Market depicted in one of twenty-five original oil paintings commissioned by the St. Charles Hotel from artists Robert Wadsworth Grafton and Louis Oscar (L.O.) Griffin and which were exhibited in the hotel's second floor gallery in 1917. They were published in the third edition of the hotel's complimentary souvenir booklet and were also issued as a set of postcards.
Grafton and Griffith produced these large works from their French Quarter studio that they shared with Clarence Millet between 1916 and 1920

|
The world-famous New Orleans French Market or “le marché français” was the central gathering place for the citizens of early New Orleans and has been operating pretty much continuously since 1791 -- that's 230 years of making groceries in the farmer's market and eating the best of what the city has to offer from the original five blocks along Decatur Street from St. Ann Street to Ursuline Street.
Vendors and shoppers alike were French, German, Italian, Native Americans, and English among others, and their unique spin on local produce, combined with their favorite spices and preparations, imbued the Meat Market, Vegetable Market, and Fish Market with a feast for the senses. They communicated in a tangle of foreign tongues but understood the universal language of food. This photograph dates from the 1960s.

An 1890 photograph by Morgan Whitney (HNOC) of M. Waldhorn & Company on the corner of Royal (left) and Conti (right) Streets. The building is located directly across Royal Street from the NOPD Eighth District Station.
The business was originally a showroom for high-end furniture manufactured at their facility located at 330 - 332 Decatur Street, now the Bienville House Hotel. M. Waldhorn & Company was established in 1881 but before long they branched out into selling quality antiques to complement their furniture – fans, clocks, bronzes, and bric-a-brac from Creole families acquired through estate sales. By the mid-1920s they were out of the furniture manufacturing business and had added jewelry and silver to their antique business. The company is known as Waldhorn and Adler today.

Politics with a Punch
is our local version of "Politically Incorrect." It started in 2002 and after more than 125 shows and 19 years, it has become a New Orleans Political Comedy Tradition. The show has grown into quite a success story. Punch is a fast-paced, free-wheeling, no-holds barred discussion of what is happening in our city, state and nation. We place a premium on having a good time and expect plenty of laughs as we discuss the controversies and the outrageous antics of our local leaders and scoundrels. We love poking fun at local and state politics.

Out of an abundance of caution and in consideration of the safety of visitors and staff, NOMA is temporarily revising our hours of operation.
through March 3, 2021, the museum will now be closed Monday through Wednesday.

During this interim period, Louisiana residents will receive free museum admission on Thursdays, courtesy of The Helis Foundation.

- 1 cup pecan halves, or halves and pieces
- 1 tablespoon honey
- Pinch of fine salt
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 F. Line an oven safe dish or a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, combine the honey and pecans until thoroughly coated. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and toss once or twice more.
Bake for up to 15 minutes. Take care not to over-caramelize the sugar, which will taint the honey flavor.
Cool at least 10 minutes, and serve. Store in a sealed container for up to six months.

CITYWIDE FISH FRY BENEFITS HOSPITALITY WORKER RESOURCE PROGRAM
Local Restaurants Fry Up Fish On Fridays During Lent
3-12-21
|
NEW ORLEANS—As most New Orleanians know, Lent means Friday fish fries. While the pandemic has forced many churches across the area to alter or cancel this beloved tradition, 39 local restaurants will keep it alive this year with Fish Fry Fridays. The Fish Fry Fridays campaign will serve as a fundraising event to benefit Hospitality Cares, a partnership between Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and United Way of Southeast Louisiana (UWSELA). Participating restaurants will donate $1 per fish fry entrée sold each week.
“The pandemic has hit the hospitality sector the hardest,” said Michael Williamson, UWSELA President and CEO. “Our community always comes together to help those in need, and this campaign is no different. The restaurants themselves are stepping up to keep the industry alive while providing a safety net for its employees through Hospitality Cares.”
Hospitality Cares is a crisis grant program offering varying resources, including free civil legal aid, counseling and emergency financial assistance to individuals working in the hospitality industry – one of the region’s largest employment sectors. The emergency grants award up to $2,500 to eligible employees at hospitality businesses running active United Way workplace campaigns in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. The funds provide temporary assistance during times of crisis to cover basic financial needs, including housing, medical and utility bills.
The Fish Fry Fridays campaign was initially launched during Lent 2020 to help hospitality workers laid off during the pandemic. It raised over $12,000 from restaurant sales and a sponsorship from TABASCO®, who will sponsor the campaign again in 2021 and be joined by New Orleans Fish House who will offer discounts to participating restaurants for their seafood features.
“We are proud to participate in this campaign,” said Phil DeGruy, New Orleans Fish House sales manager. “It is not only bringing us closer together, but it allows us to keep traditions going and keep restaurants open.”

First it clinches the third seed in the Southeastern Conference Tournament. LSU will play its quarterfinal game on Friday night at approximately 8:15 p.m. at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
Secondly, the win gives LSU 39 SEC victories over the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons combined. That is more than any other SEC program in that same three-year period.
Also, LSU is the only school in the SEC to have clinched a spot in the league's top four and received the double bye in each of the last three seasons.

The shift, we see it happen every year about this time. The weather begins to warm, city park and the bayou get busy with all sorts of activities and you can smell the spicy crawfish boils happening in every neighborhood of the city. We find ourselves eating lighter and drinking lighter as crisp whites and fruity rosé start to fly off the shelves while the "Big and Bold" section goes through a major slow down this time of year.
Piemonte Italy, the famed land of powerful Barolo and rich white truffles, also has a lot to offer in terms of lighter style wines. Delicious, refreshing wines made from local varieties of Arneis, Cortese, Favorita and Erbaluce offer great alternatives for warm weather whites. Popular rosés of the region are made from the local red varieties giving us an array of flavors from fruity and spicy to earthy and savory. Dolcetto, Fresia and Barbera are delightful, lighter style reds as their fruit forwardness and softer tannins can be enjoyable with or without food. The king of the region, Nebbiolo, is available in many styles ranging from light, fruity, spicy, drink now wines to deep earthy, leathery age worthy reds.
In our tasting this Friday, we'll focus on the wines of Piemonte including one of our favorite rosés that just landed in New Orleans. The rest of the lineup is TBA but I promise you it will be fantastic! Artisan Fine wines has an amazing portfolio of wines from the region to choose from so narrowing it down to 4 wines is a difficult task that I will be working on this week with Dave Sobiesk who will be pouring on Friday.
Our new Friday night tasting format is socially-distanced, attendance-limited and signup-only (no walk-ins). Weather permitting, tastings are held on the patio with a max of 6 people per time slot.
For more info or to sign up for this week's tasting go to Exploring Piemonte, Friday Tasting Event

Brighton Beach Memoirs
By Neil Simon
Director: Tom Bubrig
Assistant Director: Tom Hassinger
February 27 - March 14, 2021
Adults: $19, Senior/Military: $17,
Student: $14
Reserve your seats at 30byNinety.com
Here is part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower-middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”

New Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
|
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.
In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.
. COVID-19 safety protocols—facemasks, timed ticketing and limited gallery capacity to ensure social distancing—will be in place,

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.
The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.

Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic Releases Official 2021 Poster Design Featuring City Park Scene from New Orleans Artist Terry Marks
Top 500 Men and Top 500 Women in April’s Virtual 10K Race will Receive
a Free Poster
|
Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic officials have released the official poster for 2021 featuring a realistic painting from locally renowned artist Terry Marks. The 2021 poster features City Park’s picturesque Peristyle reflecting on a pool of water during a sunset.
Marks drew inspiration for the painting and poster from the scenic beauty of City Park and New Orleans, and he used both as inspiration for his take on the highly anticipated annual CCC poster.
“A photographer friend of mine took this image of the Peristyle at sunset and I knew immediately it was the image I wanted to incorporate into my poster design,” said Marks. “Ever since I became an artist most of my subject matter involves local themes, I love capturing the beauty of our city.”
Marks is the owner of Local Artscapes By Terry J. Marks, Sr. His studio is in Metairie on Airline Highway.
Marks’ official CCC poster will be available for sale at www.ccc10k.com. In continuation of CCC tradition, the top 500 men and top 500 women finishers will all receive a commemorative poster for free.
The 43rd running of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic will be a virtual race in 2021 due to COVID guidelines. The virtual 10K race will be available for participants to complete between Thursday, April 1 through Monday, April 5.
