PEPPERONI PIZZA DAY | SEPTEMBER 20

On September 20th, Pepperoni Pizza Day recognizes the most popular pizza ever created. The day celebrates the pizza enjoyed by young and old alike.

While pizza comes with many different toppings, pepperoni is the single most popular pizza. Whether you like your pizza Chicago Style or New York Style, thin and crispy or deep dish, top it with pepperoni!

According to legend, Raffaele Esposito created the first pizza in June of 1889. The Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, inspired the pizza maker so much, he created the pie-shaped delicacy. In the queen’s honor, he named it Pizza Margherita and topped the pizza with tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella. The colors represent the Italian flag.

Since then, pizza has evolved. It includes a multitude of toppings from anchovies and pineapple to sausage and bacon. However, pepperoni remains the most popular.

Italian-Americans developed the ever-popular topping through time-honored sausage-making techniques. Seasoned pork and beef sausage are smoked and cured. Once the product is ready to be sliced, it’s placed on a delicious pie and baked.

About the Exhibition

In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.

Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.

Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.

A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp 10.95
  • Crabmeat 9.95
  • Chicken 6.95
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 9.50

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

New Orleans EMS Hosts the EMS World Expo

New Orleans EMS will be hosting the EMS World Expo at the Marc Morial Convention Center next week from Monday September 18th to Friday September 22nd. Celebrating it's 35th year, the EMS World Expo continues to be the largest EMS dedicated event globally. This international event will bring EMS experts to New Orleans to share best practices and to better EMS care for those in need across the world.

As the host agency, New Orleans EMS is pleased to represent our city and the exceptional EMS care we provide to the residents and visitors of The City of New Orleans. NOEMS will be holding a Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attack exercise at the Caesars Superdome on Monday, alongside partner agencies including NOPD, NOFD, and NOHSEP. On Tuesday, international attendees will learn from New Orleans EMS' groundbreaking blood program, the only one in Louisiana where blood is carried on ground ambulances. Wednesday, as the main conference kicks off, attendees will be entertained and encouraged by New Orleans' own jazz musician and cardiac arrest survivor Maurice "Miracle Meaux" Trosclair. Read his story.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to be a part of NOEMS' lifesaving work by donating blood through our partners at The Blood Center, who will be holding a blood drive just for EMS World Expo attendees. Wednesday will continue with further lessons on blood administration presented by NOEMS' Deputy Medical Director, Dr. Emily Nichols, in conjunction with other agencies carrying blood in the field, as well as pediatric respiratory care insights from NOEMS' Medical Director, Dr. Meg Marino. Thursday we'll see NOEMS being represented by one of our field paramedics, Jessica Barbour, alongside panelists addressing pre-hospital use of ketamine. The conference will close out on Friday as NOEMS continues with pediatric care insights by Cpt Stanley Woods, and a session dedicated to NOEMS' implementation of BLS transport ambulances by Deputy Medical Director Dr. David Rayburn and Lieutenant Sarah Bass.

EMS World Expo attendees will also get to enjoy the best New Orleans has to offer in the evenings, including a special benefit concert featuring The James Martin Band, in support of the New Orleans EMS Foundation, which is open to the public at large.

Members of the media are encouraged to Apply for Press Access so they can see all that the EMS World Expo is bringing to The City of New Orleans.

Herlin Riley Quartet

Since coming of age in the nurturing environment of a very musical family and a distinguished bloodline of drummers, New Orleans native Herlin Riley emerged from that most creative era of all things rhythmic in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, to enliven the ensembles of such influential and demanding improvisers as pianist Ahmad Jamal and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis through his commanding yet elegant rhythmic presence. His authoritative style of melodic percussion is deeply imbued in the fertile creative soil of the Crescent City, encompassing as it does the entire length and breadth of America’s ongoing musical journey.

What does "perfunctory" mean?

Cursory

perfunctory pronunciation: per-fuhngk-tuh-ree

Definition: performed merely as a routine duty; hasty and superficial; lacking interest, care, or enthusiasm.

Origin: The word "perfunctory" comes from the Latin word "perfunctus," which means "done with." It was first used in the English language in the late 16th century.

Example: His greeting was perfunctory, and he barely looked up from his computer screen.

When someone describes a task as perfunctory, they mean that it was done with little effort or care. It was just something that had to be done, and so it was done quickly and without much thought. In this way, "perfunctory" is very similar in meaning to the word "cursory." Both words describe actions that are done hastily and without much attention to detail. However, "cursory" implies a bit more effort than "perfunctory." A cursory glance, for example, might involve a bit more attention than a perfunctory glance.

SOWELA RECEIVES $35 MILLION DONATION OF AIR FORCE E-8A JOINT STARS JET

Aircraft was flown in during a special ceremony today at Chennault International Airport

(Lake Charles) – SOWELA received one of its largest donations to date from the U.S. Air Force with an E-8A Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System aircraft valued at $35 million. The jet was flown in and signed over to SOWELA from the Air Force during a special ceremony today at Chennault International Airport.

The Joint STARS is a modified Boeing 707-300 series aircraft. According to the Air Force, Joint STARS evolved from Army and Air Force programs to develop, detect, locate and attack enemy armor at ranges beyond the forward area of troops. The first two development aircraft deployed in 1991 to Operation Desert Storm and supported Operation Joint Endeavor in 1995. Team Joint STARS men and women have flown over 137,000 combat hours supporting Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Odyssey Dawn and Unified Protector. The Chief of Staff of the Air Force decided in December 2021 to retire the E-8 fleet, paving the way for the USAF to donate the aircraft to SOWELA.

“The acquisition of this surveillance military aircraft is an extraordinary accomplishment for SOWELA,” said SOWELA Chancellor Dr. Neil Aspinwall. “This jet will provide the students in our Aviation program the opportunity to work with avionic systems and technologies they would otherwise not have access to. We are extremely grateful to receive this $35 million aircraft training platform. We are fortunate to have a great business partner such as Chennault International Airport that provides convenient airport access to accommodate such a massive aircraft.”

The massive airborne ground surveillance aircraft will be added to SOWELA’s growing fleet for its popular Aviation Maintenance Technology program. It is the only program in Louisiana to offer students a military-modified large-body turbofan aircraft for hands-on instruction. The Boeing 707 will be fully integrated into each area of the FAA-certified curriculum, including Airframe and Powerplants (A&P).

“Most A&P programs utilize smaller aircraft in their curriculum because it is financially difficult to purchase large aircraft or large aircraft components,” said School of Transportation and Applied Technology Dean Robert Null. “Due to this jet donation, SOWELA’s program will provide students the necessary exposure to the systems, engines and airframe components unique to the aircraft commonly used in the airline industry. Because of this, our students will have an advantage when seeking employment after their training.”

The mission of SOWELA’s Aviation Maintenance program is to provide a hands-on learning environment and practical application of aircraft maintenance training. The program is a federally regulated Aviation Training School certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE). Students who complete the program can test for FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification.

“While E-8 Joint STARS was still in development, this aircraft deployed in 1991 and flew 49 combat sorties in support of Operation Desert Storm, testing and proving the new capability,” said Col. Scott Rothermel, Air Force Material Command senior materiel leader. “It was later modified to be a pilot trainer aircraft and used by hundreds of aircrews in that capacity. Upon its Air Force retirement, it is being transferred to SOWELA in accordance with GSA’s determination, where it will surely provide technical education value for many years to come.”

In addition to its Aviation Maintenance Technology program, SOWELA offers more than 30 technical and academic programs including Chemical Laboratory Technology, Machine Tool Technology, Culinary Arts, Drafting and Design Technology, Surgical Technology, Accounting Technology and Forest Technology.

SOWELA was recently named #1 community college in Louisiana by Niche. SOWELA is also nationally recognized as a “Great College to Work For” by the Great Colleges to Work For program and ranked #36 on the “Top 100 Community Colleges in America” by Stacker.

United Fruit Company Wharf

The facility of the United Fruit Company at the Erato Street Wharf unloading bananas from the steamboats on the right to the railroad cars on the left. Two different supervisors may be seen in this image – at the bottom right is a gentleman with his walking stick perched over his shoulder. To the left of center, seated above the line of workers, is another. He is not the “tally man” as he does not hold a clipboard or writing pad.

This facility would process 10-million bunches annually using both machinery and manual labor. Each stalk of bananas that you see in this photograph is considered to be a bunch. That’s a lot of bananas! In fact, they could load twenty-five railroad card per hour.

1900: New Basin Canal at Lake Pontchartrain

From the archives of the New Orleans Public Library, the terminus of the New Basin Canal was located at Lake Pontchartrain where the lighthouse marked the entrance to the lake, captured by C. Milo Williams in 1900. The Southern Yacht Club, a variety of rowing and boating clubs, and the West End resort and amusement area were all located along this stretch of the canal which is the only section of the original New Basin Canal that remains after it was filled in.

It was begun in 1832 and completed in 1838, expanded and deepened over the years. Almost the length of the canal was filled in beginning downtown in the late 1940s and ending in 1950. Much of the present route of the Pontchartrain Expressway (I-10) follows the route of the New Basin Canal.

The discoloration at the top of the photograph is not a weather phenomenon but a defect in the image negative.

Laugh and cry with these lovable Louisiana ladies who are “as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel" as they support each other through the challenges of life.

This tear-jerking comedy is set in a beauty salon in the fictional northwestern Louisiana parish of Chinquapin, based on the writer’s hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and the death of his sister. The play spans three years in the lives of Truby, Shelby, Annelle, M’Lynn, and Clairee, whose heartaches and hilarious attitudes pay tribute to southern women’s survival skills. Experience the eternally relevant 1987 Broadway hit drama that became a beloved movie in 1989 starring Sally Field, Shirley MacClaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, and Darryl Hannah. With country fried quips such as “I’m not crazy—I’ve just been in a very bad mood for forty years,” “I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence,” and “Don’t try to get on my good side—I no longer have one” …you will cry, laugh, and be Southern comforted by these warm, wise women.

Lower Depths Theatre

The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans ends its seventh season with Spring Storm by Tennessee Williams this September at The Lower Depths Theatre on the campus of Loyola University New Orleans, directed by Salvatore Mannino. Mannino recently directed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time for Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre. He serves as artistic director of the Loyola University New Orleans Department of Theatre and Dance, where TWTC has a professional residency since 2019.

Spring Storm serves as an origin story for many of Williams’ signature tragic heroines. It was written from 1937-38 when the playwright was in college and during his travels to New Orleans and beyond. It never received a staging in his lifetime, but in its pages are planted the seeds for Amanda and Laura Wingfield of The Glass Menagerie and Blanche DuBois of A Streetcar Named Desire among other characters from his popular plays.

The story centers around Heavenly Critchfield, a small town woman torn between the choice of her longtime boyfriend and a desire to leave town to start a new life and the chance to become the wealthiest housewife in town for a mysterious old schoolmate just returned home. Both men are making moves that benefit themselves, and Heavenly realizes she has to choose based on someone she’s never been asked to consider: herself. All the while, her mother, caught in her family’s former glory, hopes she’ll make the choice to elevate their reputation. What Heavenly doesn’t realize is that danger and jealousy lurks around every crepe myrtle tree and azalea bush in this seemingly sweet town…and there will be deadly consequences to her decisions. Set against the backdrop of the post-Depression Mississippi Delta, the play is full of Southern Gothic Easter eggs for longtime Williams fans and is replete with small town gossip and drama for first-time Williams initiates.

An all local cast includes Nicole Miller as Heavenly (Rivertown’s Matilda), Matthew Raetz as Dick Miles (TSF’s Romeo & Juliet), Matthew Boese as Arthur Shannon (TWTC’s Sweet Bird of Youth) and. Charlie Carr as Hertha; and features Tracey E. Collins, Margeaux Fanning, Miles Hamauei, Delphine J, and Maile Zox.

The production team for the production includes Nick Shackleford, Diane Baas, Eric Porter, Grace Smith, Puck, Augustin J Correro, and Madeline Taliancich. This season of the Tennessee Williams theatre Company of New Orleans is supported by a grant from The New Orleans Theatre Association (NOTA) and The New Orleans Tourism & Cultural Fund (NOTCF).

“We are thrilled to end this season on this early Tennessee Williams treasure trove filled with his ideas for future masterpieces. It sets the stage for an exciting next season when audiences will see so many of these ideas explored. We can’t wait to share all of these amazing plays with our audiences, starting with Spring Storm,” says TWTC Founding Co-Artistic Director Nick Shackleford.

Friday's Wine School...David Sobiesk contacted me about doing a Friday Night Wines School with a range of Lambursco from a producer who was visiting this week. Unfortunately, her flight was leaving before the tasting and she could not join us, but it gave Dave and me a reason to show off the varied and diverse range of bubbles produced in northern Italy!

Sparkling wine is made all over the Italian Peninsula. From the growing popularity of Pet Nats to Charmat Method, Col Fondo and Metodo Classico, pretty much every region produces some sort of sparkling wine. It is especially popular in northern Italy where Franciacorta and Trento excel in elegant Champagne styled wines, Prosecco thrives in Friuli Venezia and the Veneto and Lambrusco is said to have been made in Emilia Romagna for thousands of years.

Join us tonight as we discuss the varied histories and production methods of some of our favorite regions. And hopefully we'll be celebrating the continuation of cooler temps on the patio (especially for Dave's sake!). Reserve your spot here, Italian Fizz- 3 spots remaining

President of Croatia to visit Belle Chasse for grand opening of $5.2M cultural center

  • Lance Traweek, Editor//

President of Croatia Zoran Milanović will join the Croatian American Society for the grand opening of the new cultural center, the Croatian House, on September 23, in Belle Chasse.

“This momentous occasion marks a milestone for the Croatian American Society in the New Orleans area,” Tony Cibilich, Croatian American Society president, said in a news release. “We are honored to have President Milanovic visit as part of this goodwill trip to the United States. Croatians have a long history in the United States going back generations. The Croatian House is meant to honor our past and build on our future, and it will help reconnect Croatian-American friends and family and build new relationships across the community.”

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser and other parish officials will be in attendance, as well as Archbishop Gregory Aymond, who will offer a blessing over the new building. According to the news release, the grand opening will include catering from Dragos, chargrilled oysters, Croatian beer and music and other aspects of Croatian culture. It’s located at 220 Croatian Way in Belle Chasse.

Construction of the $5.2 million, 9,000-square-foot facility began in December 2021. It was completed in August. The steel and stone building is built in a Croatian style. It comprises a great hall, indoor kitchen, bar, outdoor pavilion and kitchen for roasting lamb and grilling oysters.

We're happy to bring a piece of the past back to WYES starting this weekend. GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS, the vintage TV series that began WYES’ legacy of award-winning nationally broadcast cooking shows, returns to the station – 40 years after its debut. Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.

Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. It begins Saturday in the kitchen of the legendary Chef Warren Leruth, and you'll see many other local icons below in the weeks to come. For all the episodes, the distinctive voices of Mary Lou Conroy and Andres Calandria narrate, with original music from the Charlie Byrd Trio, the Dukes of Dixieland and Banu Gibson. Philip Melancon

Mancini’s music was the soundtrack of mid-century Hollywood. He contributed to over 250 movies and scores of T.V. shows. To name a few: Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther in the 50’s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Two for the Road in the 60’s, Darling Lili in the 70’, and Victor / Victoria in the 80’s. The focus of Mancini by Moonlight is the lyrical songs of Mancini. Although this giant of American music was recognized for his sweeping scores, here we feature his songs with lyrics. Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, It Had Better Be Tonight and such. It’s a rich library of exceptional melodies coupled with the masterful lyrics of Johnny Mercer, Leslie Bricusse and Jay Livingston.

Mancini by Moonlight: the cabaret, will be performed by the seasoned duo of Heidi and Phil Melancon. Joined to their hips the ever so hip David Cook and Alden Hagardorn.

See you under the twinkling stars of Monkey Hill.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge

Story by Zack Nagy

© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation

LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.

The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.

LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.

Related video

Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).

Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.

LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.

The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.

LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.

Exciting news from the Office of Lt. Governor and the Office of Tourism! We're thrilled to announce the stunning new design for our float as we gear up for our 3rd year in the 2024 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language." Our float features a larger-than-life Mardi Gras jester, fleur de lis, second-line inspired umbrellas, and lots of purple, green, and gold.
