NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MILK DAY | SEPTEMBER 27
Each year on September 27th folks enjoy a tall, frosty glass to celebrate National Chocolate Milk Day.
In the late 1680s, an Irish-born physician by the name of Sir Hans Sloane invented the chocolatey beverage. When offered the position of personal physician to an English Duke in Jamaica, Sloane jumped at the opportunity. Jamaica interested the naturalist in him.
While in Jamaica, Sloane encountered a local beverage. The locals mixed cocoa and water together. However, when Sloane tasted it, he reported the flavor to be nauseating. After some experimentation, the doctor found a way to combine cocoa with milk. The creamy combination made it a more pleasant-tasting drink. Years later, Sloane returned to England with the chocolate recipe in hand. Initially, apothecaries introduced the concoction as a medicine.
Generations later, chocolate milk lovers enjoy their treat in a variety of ways. It can be purchased premixed by the jug or individual serving. For a custom mix, powders and syrups allow us to make it as chocolatey as we like at home.

About the Exhibition
In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.
Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.
Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.
A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

One more Hubig’s Pies flavor is hitting stores, and a taste of fall could be next
Matters related to Hubig’s Pies get personal, and tap into memory and long-ago cravings. So as the brand continues its progressive return of flavors, each one may strike a different chord for Hubig’s faithful.
And so it goes for the first coconut flavor Hubig’s Pies that started appearing in stores this week.
It turns out these first pies are part of a taste batch, distributed in very small quantities. But company owner Drew Ramsey says more are on the way this week as Hubig’s tweaks the recipe.
“It’s the same recipe as before, but we want it to be the same and taste the same, so that’s why we test them and why we do this slowly,” he said.
In business since 1921, Hubig’s Pies became more than just a familiar convenience food in New Orleans. The grab-and-go treats, which could be found at the grocery, hardware store or gas station, were inexpensive products that became part of New Orleans' daily routine, and thus became ingrained in the hearts of a city that loves its rituals.
A fire in 2012 destroyed the company’s facility in the Marigny and put the future of the beloved local pie maker in jeopardy, spurring longings as the Hubig’s hiatus dragged on year after year.
Hubig’s marked its return last November with two flavors – apple and lemon. Since then more of the “staple flavors” that Hubig's previously made year-round have been returning one at a time. With apple, lemon, chocolate, peach and now coconut in production, that leaves only pineapple from the staple seven of yore.
However, that doesn’t necessarily mean pineapple is the next flavor up.
Hubig’s also made seasonal flavors for different times of the year, including cherry, sweet potato, strawberry, blueberry and banana.
“Sweet potato was always one of our favorites to do when the weather broke in the fall, and we’re actively trying to do that one now as well,” Ramsey said.
“I’m making no promises as to which will be first, but to use the baseball term, pineapple and sweet potato are in the bullpen.”

One step closer to the Moon!
Teams at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility have structurally joined all four RS-25 engines onto the core stage for NASA's Space Launch System rocket that will send four astronauts on their journey around the Moon during #Artemis II.
Technicians will now focus on the complex task of fully securing the engines to the stage and integrating the propulsion and electrical systems within the structure.
Teams at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans have structurally joined all four RS-25 engines onto the core stage for NASA’s Artemis II Moon rocket. The flight test is the agency’s first crewed mission under Artemis.
Technicians added the first engine to NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket core stage Sept. 11. Teams installed the second engine onto the stage Sept. 15 with the third and fourth engines Sept. 19 and Sept. 20. Technicians with NASA, Aerojet Rocketdyne, an L3Harris Technologies company and the RS-25 engines lead contractor, along with Boeing, the core stage lead contractor, now will focus efforts on the complex task of fully securing the engines to the stage and integrating the propulsion and electrical systems within the structure.
The SLS core stage, at 212 feet, is the backbone of the Moon rocket. Its two huge propellant tanks provide more than 733,000 gallons of super-chilled liquid propellant to the four RS-25 engines, while the stage’s flight computers, avionics, and electrical systems act as the “brains” of the rocket. During Artemis II, the RS-25 engines will together provide more than 2 million pounds of thrust for eight minutes of flight, helping to send the Artemis II crew beyond low-Earth orbit to venture around the Moon.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp 10.95
- Crabmeat 9.95
- Chicken 6.95
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 9.50
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

Beyoncé's highly anticipated stop in New Orleans on her "Renaissance" world tour is t, a massive production that is expected to run nearly three hours and leave fans in awe.
As soon-to-be concert attendees know, those tickets weren't cheap — don't ruin your experience by missing some critical bit of entry or ticketing information.
Here's everything you need to know before you head to the Superdome Wednesday to hail the queen.
What to wear
Shortly before Beyoncé's shows in late August, she called upon her hive to wear their "fabulous silver fashions" for the entirety of Virgo season (Beyoncé's astronomical sign) from August 23 to September 22.
Those attending the New Orleans show sadly won't have the chance to help bring Beyonce's one and only public birthday wish to fruition, since it lands on September 27, in lowly Libra season. Just kidding, Libras!
But silver clothing has been an ongoing trend throughout the "Renaissance" tour, probably because Beyoncé wore chrome and silver in much of her promotional material for the album itself.
So it's safe to say that if you wear silver, you'll probably feel right at home in the crowd.
Where to pregame
There's no shortage of good bars and restaurants — both new and old — within walking distance of the Superdome (depending on what shoes you're wearing).
Whether you're looking for a bite to eat, a casual beer or a nice cocktail before you head to the show, food writer Ian McNulty sized up all the options so you don't have to.
Everybody on mute
During her performance of Energy, when Beyoncé sings, "Look around everybody on mute," she expects the audience to respond with total silence.
It's become somewhat of a competition between cities throughout the world, with videos of the best and worst audience reactions often going viral shortly after the performance.
So, unless you want to be harassed by the masses on social media and risk disappointing Queen B herself, keep quiet until Beyoncé moves on with the song.
Parking
Parking in one of the Superdome's garages or surface lots costs around $50, credit or debit card only. Parking can be pre-purchased via parkwhiz.com.
Spots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for approximately 7,000 vehicles. Just like at a Saints game, not everyone going to the Beyoncé show will be able to snag a parking spot on site.
With tens of thousands of Beyoncé fans headed to the Dome and the closure of Sugar Bowl Drive for the event, traffic delays are expected.
Hailing a ride to somewhere in the walkable vicinity of the Superdome is typically the most time and cost effective option.
Entering the Dome
Only tickets on a mobile phone are good for entry. A screenshot of the ticket’s bar code will not be accepted. Enter at the gate listed on your ticket.
Once you’re in the Superdome, you cannot exit and then reenter.
Leave your cash at home
The Dome, from concessions to merchandise, is entirely cashless.
There are no ATMs on premises, but you can convert cash to a $25 or $50 Visa gift card at guest services located on the 100, 200 and 500 levels at Gates A, C and G. Any unused balance can be used wherever debit cards are accepted.
Beyonce performs on the 'On The Run II' tour at Mercedes-Benz Superdome on September 13, 2018 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Provided Photo by Raven Varona/Parkwood/PictureGroup
Bring a clear bag or none at all
As usual, the only bags allowed at the show are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags no larger than 12” x 6” x 12”; one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags; and small clutch bags no larger than 6.5” x 4.5”
Fanny packs and backpacks of any kind are not allowed. Silver bags, no matter how fashionable, don't count as clear!

NATIONAL CORNED BEEF HASH DAY | SEPTEMBER 27
On September 27th, National Corned Beef Hash Day adds flavor to every meal while cleaning out the fridge, too.
Making corned beef hash is a great way to use up leftovers. Corned beef hash became popular during and after World War II. Since rationing limited the availability of fresh meat, corned beef filled the gap. Cooks became creative with herbs, spices, and leftovers. Nothing was wasted. In lean times, stretching a meal became a priority.
The Hormel Company claims it introduced corned beef hash and roast beef hash to the United States as early as 1950. However, World War II reporter, Betty Wason, lists a corned beef hash recipe in her Cooking Without Cans cookbook printed in 1943. Other forms of hash existed as part of the American diet since at least the 19th century. The numerous recipes available before that time also attest to the country's love of the dish as does the existence of many “hash houses” named after the dish.

1929: Carrollton Railroad Station Stop
There was a railroad station near Heinemann Park (Pelican Stadium) shown here from February 1929. The ballpark is on the right behind the palm tree. This train stop was still in use as late as the mid-1970s.

1910: The Pizzati Gate at City Park
A 1910 photograph by Charles Franck of the dedication of the Pizzati Gate in City Park showing the relocated Belknap Fountain to the left of the entrance. Details surrounding the disappearance of the fountain are scarce, but signs point to its destruction during the hurricane of 1915.
As an aside, a visit to Metairie Cemetery to see the tomb of Salvadore Pizzati is well worth the trip. The architect Charles Brune actually obtained a patent in 1904 for his design. This private mausoleum is an ornate collection of Medieval turrets, curved dentils, Byzantine Columns, a blind window, an alpha and omega symbol, and a draped urn. This whimsical and eccentric mausoleum appears to be the result of competition among mausoleum builders to build the best and try to create a truly unique offering.

1905: The Old Pontchartrain Railroad
Beginning at the Champs Elysee or Elysian Fields Avenue near Decatur, the Pontchartrain Railroad runs directly to the shore of Lake Pontchartrain at Old Lake or Milneburg. Chartered in 1820, the rail line was the second railroad established, but the rail line was not completed until 1829 which would make them either the third or fourth ever built in the United States. From the outset the railroad carried both freight and passengers.
Milneburg was established by Alexander Milne not long after the Great Fire of 1788 to support his brick making business and participate in the rebuilding book. By 1833 his venture was firmly rooted on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain.
The resort area grew in popularity and before long there were several restaurants operating there, the most famous of which was Lucien Bourdro’s eatery, but as Lafcadio Hearn would note, “Each one, like those of Paris, has some particular specialty, and the chicken, shrimps, mushrooms, and wines are universally excellent.”
The Pontchartrain Railroad remained in operation until it was purchased by the New Orleans Mobile & Texas Railroad in 1871 which was later acquired by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in 1880. The engine seen here is the Louisville & Nashville (L&N) Number 2119. Quite a departure from the old Smokey Mary first introduced in 1830.

When would it affect me?
Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers released a timeline that projected when drinking water would be impacted by the salt intrusion.
According to those projections here is when areas of Jefferson Parish could be impacted:
- Gretna: Oct. 24
- West Jefferson: Oct. 25
- Westwego: Oct. 26
- East Jefferson: Oct. 29
A saltwater wedge is on its way. How will it affect our lives?
From drinking and bathing to watering plants, here's what to know
By GABRIELLA KILLETT
As if heat, humidity, hurricanes and the eroding coastline aren't enough, the New Orleans area is now threatened by a saltwater wedge inching up the Mississippi River, potentially contaminating the source of drinking water south of Lake Pontchartrain.
First things first: There's no need to panic. The wedge won't reach water intakes in New Orleans' urban core for weeks. The wedge is moving upriver at about 1½ miles a day.
.
Still, residents are wondering what will happen then. Here are some answers.
Is it safe to drink?
When the salinity of the river rises where government systems draw water for purification, it will be too high to be processed by the human body. That could make you sick, and even lead to kidney failure.
However, the Army Corps of Engineers is arranging barges to deliver 36 million gallons of uncontaminated river water daily for use by local utilities.
How about pets?
Animals that consume salty water also can fall ill. Consuming excess salt could cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Lawns and plants?
In many cases, salty water can kill plants, especially in environments typically dependent on fresh water. Lawns and pets will need rain or other sources of fresh water to thrive.
Bathing?
This is OK. Showering or bathing in salt water can even have health benefits, including loosening muscles and soothing skin.
What about plumbing?
Over time, high salinity can damage plumbing, appliances, cooling systems that use water and water heaters. The best source of information for specific equipment is the manufacturer, vendor or service provider, the Louisiana Health Department says.
Dishwashers? Clothes washers?
Dishwashers are known to process high levels of sodium chloride. But appliance experts also say salt can damage a machine's water softening abilities and clog its salt tank. Check with the manfacturer for specifics.
Clothes-washing machines can function normally, but excess salt can lead to residue on clothes.
Washing cars?
Saltwater can damage vehicle paint and metals, which can lead to rust and erosion. If you wash your vehicle at home, use bottled or treated water as salinity levels rise.
Will it affect our fish?
Freshwater fish have varying levels of adaptability to saltwater. Anglers in the Mississippi River must be flexible, and be aware that saltwater fish might be moving upriver with the wedge.
What do we do now?
Don't panic. There is no shortage of bottled water nationally, so local officials urge people who live upriver of the wedge to stop buying extra.
"The people that really need it in Venice and other parts of Plaquemines are having a hard time getting water," said Patrick Harvey, Plaquemines Parish's emergency preparedness director.

Laugh and cry with these lovable Louisiana ladies who are “as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel" as they support each other through the challenges of life.
This tear-jerking comedy is set in a beauty salon in the fictional northwestern Louisiana parish of Chinquapin, based on the writer’s hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and the death of his sister. The play spans three years in the lives of Truby, Shelby, Annelle, M’Lynn, and Clairee, whose heartaches and hilarious attitudes pay tribute to southern women’s survival skills. Experience the eternally relevant 1987 Broadway hit drama that became a beloved movie in 1989 starring Sally Field, Shirley MacClaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, and Darryl Hannah. With country fried quips such as “I’m not crazy—I’ve just been in a very bad mood for forty years,” “I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence,” and “Don’t try to get on my good side—I no longer have one” …you will cry, laugh, and be Southern comforted by these warm, wise women.

DOTD announces opening of new I-10 west flyover ramp into MSY
Kenner, LA – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces the upcoming opening of the newly constructed I-10 west flyover ramp at Loyola Dr., which will provide direct access to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY).
The new ramp is scheduled to open to the public on Friday, September 29, 2023.
“Opening this ramp with direct access to the airport is a great accomplishment and will be helpful to many travelers of this corridor, both going to the airport and everyday users,” said DOTD Secretary Eric Kalivoda. “We look forward to opening the second ramp in the near future.”
Gilchrist Construction, the prime contractor on the project, moved up an estimated mid-November opening date for the I-10 west ramp due in part to the dry weather throughout the summer.
The opening of the new ramp marks the first significant step toward the completion of the $125.6 million I-10/Loyola Drive Interchange Project, ongoing since 2020, which improves interstate, local, and airport traffic flow through the Kenner area. As a design-build project, contractors, designers, and consultants work together to minimize costs and delays.
The ramp avoids traffic lights by passing over the Loyola/Veterans Blvd. intersection and descends to integrate into Terminal Dr., the new four-lane divided highway that serves as the entrance to the airport. At the end of the ramp, drivers will follow airport terminal signage to their destinations.
The next major step in the project's opening will be the second flyover ramp, which will allow exiting airport vehicles to merge directly onto I-10 east toward New Orleans. This second flyover ramp, adjacent to the first, is estimated to open approximately two weeks after the first, weather permitting. Both ramps join in a single structure in the middle of Terminal Dr., just south of Veterans Blvd.
Opening both ramps will dramatically increase traffic flow efficiency in and out of the airport and ease congestion off the Loyola Dr. exit. The Loyola Dr. exit has served as the main entryway to the new airport since the new airport opened in 2019.
In addition to the ramps, auxiliary lanes will join I-10 between the Williams Blvd. (LA 49) and Loyola Dr. exits. These extra lanes widen I-10 to four lanes in each direction, thus easing congestion and allowing airport traffic to have less of an impact on interstate traffic.
The final step will be opening the state's first diverging diamond interchange (DDI). Currently near completion, the DDI will improve traffic flow by eliminating the need for left turn signals at the Loyola Dr. and I-10 interchange.
The full project, including both ramps, the widening of I-10, and the DDis estimated to be completed in the first half of 2024.

PLAYMAKERS’ WANTS YOU TO GET YOUR TICKETS
FOR INTO THE BREECHES! OPENING THIS WEEKEND
The 2023-24 Playmakers Theater season begins with a WWII era comedy interwoven with Shakespeare’s Henry IV and V – of course, women play all the roles. Well, almost. Into the Breeches! is directed by Merry Antoon assisted by Naomi Lee Shawn-O’Donnell. The show runs Sept. 30-Oct. 15.
The New Orleans WWII Museum is collaborating on Breeches!, a masterful blending of a story about women taking the stage to take their minds off their husbands “over there” with soaring Shakespearean dialogue including the rousing “Band of Brothers” speech. In an interesting twist, the script, written to take place in Rhode Island, allows localization and Playmakers has employed a local historian to update the script to take place in WWII-era New Orleans.
To set the Forties ambience, the theater lobby will be decked out with WWII era posters and actual newspapers announcing the Pearl Harbor raid, the declaration of war and the Allied invasion of Europe.
Playmakers’ season tickets are now on sale for all six shows for $150 on BonTempsTix.com or individual tickets for Into the Breeches! which runs Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. are available for $20, also at BonTempsTix.com.
Into The Breeches is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the St. Tammany Parish Commission on Cultural Affairs. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

Krewe de Pink Prom is a fun-filled prom night for adults organized by Krewe de Pink, a local, all-volunteer, non-profit. The purpose of the event is to raise funds to support breast cancer research at Tulane Cancer Research and provide a space for survivors, supporters and their friends and family to celebrate their victories over the disease.
Krewe de Pink’s annual Prom takes place on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at the Generations Hall in New Orleans, LA. Dressed in their favorite Prom styles or pink bling, attendees will enjoy a night of live music, a unique auction, fun raffles, a dance performance and a special tribute highlighting Breast Cancer Survivors who attend the event.
For many, this is a chance to relive or reinvent prom night by taking Prom photos and dancing the night away in the spacious and beautiful Generations Hall. New Orleans’ own Crescent City Soul will keep the dance floor full with Disco, Funk, Jazz, Motown, R&B, Salsa, and more from the 1960’s to present-day.
This adult (21 & older) Prom night is a cash bar event featuring Krewe de Pink’s 2023 Cocktail Contest winner’s specialty drinks. Attendees may bring along snacks and favorite party food items for their table.
The Krewe de Pink Prom auction has a variety of items to bid on including New Orleans Staycation packages, jewelry, artwork and one-of-a-kind hand decorated costume bras. Raffle prizes include a wine barrel, a beer bucket, a Lotto ticket bundle and there will even be a chance to win the title of Krewe de Pink Prom Queen or King 2023!
The Pussyfooters will show their support for the cause with a special performance and a Breast Cancer Survivors promenade will take place honoring survivors present during the event. The Backstreet Cultural Museum, the local institution dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of New Orleans, will host a celebration to mark an expansion into an adjoining room. On Saturday, September 30, the museum will host an event featuring never-before-seen exhibits and musical entertainment.
The expansion celebration will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can enjoy music spun by the museum’s own DJ Du, while a unique Black Indian performance at 4 p.m. is set to be a highlight of the event. Additionally, Big Chief Victor Harris, known as the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi, will deliver a message to the crowd, underscoring the significance of this expansion.
This expansion celebration comes on the heels of the museum’s first anniversary in its new home, marking a year of continued growth and success. Initially founded in 1999 by photographer Sylvester “Hawk” Francis, a recipient of the 2004 Best Of The Beat Heartbeat Award, the museum has served as a vital showcase for his work and the broader cultural scene of New Orleans. After opening its doors in the Blandin Funeral Home in 1999, the museum has persevered through the years, even surviving the challenges posed by Hurricane Ida, which damaged its former location.
To learn more about the Backstreet Cultural Museum and the upcoming event, visit the museum’s official website.

Philip Melancon
Mancini’s music was the soundtrack of mid-century Hollywood. He contributed to over 250 movies and scores of T.V. shows. To name a few: Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther in the 50’s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Two for the Road in the 60’s, Darling Lili in the 70’, and Victor / Victoria in the 80’s. The focus of Mancini by Moonlight is the lyrical songs of Mancini. Although this giant of American music was recognized for his sweeping scores, here we feature his songs with lyrics. Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, It Had Better Be Tonight and such. It’s a rich library of exceptional melodies coupled with the masterful lyrics of Johnny Mercer, Leslie Bricusse and Jay Livingston.
Mancini by Moonlight: the cabaret, will be performed by the seasoned duo of Heidi and Phil Melancon. Joined to their hips the ever so hip David Cook and Alden Hagardorn.
See you under the twinkling stars of Monkey Hill.

St. Tammany’s big 10 fall flings
BY JESSICA SAGGIO
•Oct. 4-8: St. Tammany Parish Fair
A more than 100-year tradition, the St. Tammany Parish Fair will return to the parish fairgrounds in Covington Oct. 4-8, with the pageant and rodeo queen contest beginning before then on Sept. 23 and Oct. 1, respectively. This year’s fair includes all the familiar favorites: midway rides, the mini farm, JoJo the Magic Clown, 4H exhibits and live performances. On Oct. 6 at 9 a.m., a parade will lead crowds to the official opening ceremony at the Parish Fairgrounds off North Florida Street, but midway rides and fair festivities begin before then.
This year’s fair will have live performances by Patrick Thompson, Highway 190, Isabel Williams, Southern Patriot, Anna and Soul Revival. It will also include a gospel night and Wild West Show the evening of Oct. 5, and a rodeo the evenings of Oct. 6 and 7. The fair will play host to a dance and cheer competition, chicken calling contest, art demonstrations and much more.
For a full timeline and list of events, visit sttammanyparishfair.info. Times vary by day. Weekend festivities require a $5 entrance fee for adults and $3 for children under age 12. Midway ride bands can be purchased between $25 and $30 depending on the day, and the Wild West Show and rodeo require a separate entry fee of $15 for adults and $10 for children.
•Oct. 7: Bluesberry Music & Art Festival
The Bluesberry Music and Art Festival will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Bogue Falaya Park in Covington. The festival promises “a family-friendly celebration of world-class music, art, food and culture with a blueberry twist at every turn” — and will expand this year with a third stage for performances.
The event features art vendors, food trucks, a beer and wine garden, live art demonstrations and an interactive children’s village. However, music will be the main attraction with performances by Kevin & The Blues Groovers, Big 50, Ally Venable Band, Mike Zito and The Band of Heathens. A separate Ozone Songwriters stage will feature up-and-coming talent and a third “River Revival” stage has been added this year to feature gospel artists.
“We look forward to expanding our festival’s musical variety and showcasing even more of the incredible talent we have right here in our own backyard,” said Bluesberry co-founder Sarah Federer.
Tickets to the event are $30 in advance, or $40 at the gate. Children under 10 are free. A VIP package is also available for $90. Parking is throughout downtown and a shuttle will transport eventgoers from the St. Tammany Justice Center. Visit thebluesberryfest.com for more.
•Oct. 14: Wild Things
It’s been a long time coming, but Wild Things officially returns this year for the first time since 2019. The event was canceled in years prior due to COVID-19 safety precautions, but this year, Refuge Ranger Rebecca Larkins said “it feels great to be back.” The free event will take place at the refuge headquarters in Lacombe at 61389 La. 434 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wild Things festival is an event created to celebrate all things outdoors and will feature live music by the Dead End Blues, food, boat and canoe tours, fish casting stations, a children’s activity tent with crafts and face painting, nature talks, live animal presentations, hayrides, target shooting and a “story walk” by the St. Tammany Parish Library.
“This is the one-stop shop to the great outdoors,” said Larkins. “… It is truly a celebration of National Wildlife Refuges where it is our mission to connect people to nature.”
A youth art contest and “Walk for the Wild” 5K will also take place ahead of the event. For more information on those, visit fws.gov/refuge/big-branch-marsh.
•Oct. 13-15: Wooden Boat Festival
The Wooden Boat Festival is back at Maritime Museum Louisiana in Madisonville. A kickoff “Maritime Mania” party will take place Oct. 13 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. with food, live music by Category 6, a silent auction and pirate costume contest. However, the main event will run Oct. 14-15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. This year’s festival will feature live music on Saturday by Monster Crawfish, Sugar Bomb and Bottoms Up, and on Sunday, the Chase Tyler Band. Food and art vendors will line the event alongside boat displays and a children’s village.
The children’s village will include 30 kid vendors from Market Munchkins, activities from the St. Tammany Children’s Museum, Northshore Robotics, a pumpkin-decorating station, presentations from the Plauche’s Battalion reenactors, a mermaid visit and slides. Music for the kids will be provided by School of Rock, Felix Schafer, the Schafer Family Ensemble and the Northshore American Harpist Society.
Coinciding with the festival will also be the “Quick n’ Dirty” boat building contest where teams work to both build and decorate a boat that will be put to the test at the festival’s parade Sunday evening down the Tchefuncte River.
Tickets to the event are $10 for adults and free for children under 12. Early birds who grab tickets in September only pay $8 at maritimemuseumlouisiana.org.
•Oct. 20-22: Slidell Food and Fun Festival
The Slidell Food and Fun Festival hosted by Saint Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church is slated to return Oct. 20-22 at the church campus on Robert Boulevard in Slidell. The fair runs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, then Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday noon to 9 p.m. This year’s festival will feature carnival rides, 15 food vendors, games, raffles and live entertainment. The music lineup includes performances by the Stacy Weaver Band, Witness, Voodoo Gumbo, Where Ya At Brass Band, Fistful of Flannel, Soul Brass Band, Swingaroux, Home Run Jack, Out Da Box and Caroline Tebbs. Entrance to the fair is free, but rides require a wristband, though prices for those have not been announced.
•Oct. 20-21: Abita Fall Fest
Back for another celebration filled with music, food, drinks, activities and artisanal vendors, the Abita Fall Fest returns at the Abita Springs Trailhead. The event will jump-start with the “Fall Fest After Dark” Oct. 20 featuring live performances by Julian Primeaux, Bon Bon Vivant and Marc Broussard. Food and drink will be available at this music-centric kickoff, but the activities area of the event will not be open. Tickets to the after-dark fest are $20, and children under 10 are free.
On Oct. 21, the festival will be in full swing with a host of vendors, an “interactive circle” with hands-on experiences, a Tiger Tailgate football viewing station and live performances by the Imagination Movers, Gal Holiday, Strange Roux, Tyler Kitchen & The Right Pieces, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Tyler Farr on the main stage. A separate “Trail Stage” will feature Tom Leggett, Lilli Lewis, Cactus Thief, The Stumpgrinders and Christian Serpas & Ghost Town.
There’s plenty for the littles as well in the Kid Zone, including carnival games, face painting, a petting zoo, crafts and pony rides. A special “pumpkin stage” will be in the Kids Zone where the Tchefunky Playground Band will perform, and a magic show, princess party and juggling act will take place. Fun for the whole family is also available at the “Harvest Matchup,” where there will be inflatables, football and archery.
Advance tickets to the main event are $25 for adults, $15 for kids ages 3-10, and free for kids 2 and under. Tickets at the gate are $35. See more at abitafallfest.com.
•Oct. 28: Symphony on The Lake
Grab those chairs and enjoy a sunset over Lake Pontchartrain with the soothing sounds of classical music from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra.
Symphony on the Lake will take place at the Mandeville Lakefront between Coffee and Carroll streets from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 28. The LPO will perform works by Copland, Brahms, Britten, Saint-Saens, Duke, Gershwin, Offenbach, Williams, Sousa and others. Food trucks will be on site at this free event, but picnics will also be permitted.
•Nov. 3-5: Ozone Songwriters Festival
One of the north shore’s signature events for up-and-coming talent, the Ozone Songwriters Festival, the festival will host more than 130 local, regional and national music artists who will sing their hearts across four stages. The event features not only musical talent, but songwriting talent. A VIP Showcase will take place Nov. 3 at the Old Rail Brewing Company, with performances by event creator and Grammy-nominated recording artist Greg Barnhill, among others. Tickets for the showcase range from $65 to $130.
The following days will include performances and a songwriter contest where a winner will be selected for a one-song record deal. Specific details about this portion of the event and stage locations have not been finalized yet.
A songwriter workshop will also take place where budding artists can learn the ins and outs of studio recording, social media, engineering and more. The cost to attend the workshop is $40. More information on the workshop will be posted on the festival’s website at ozonemusic.org as details are announced.
“The festival gives new songwriters the chance to be in front of a live audience and have their songs heard, and to gain valuable stage experience, as well as get a reaction to their songs,” said Barnhill. “It’s also a great experience for the audience, for they might just be seeing the next Usher or Taylor Swift.”
•Nov. 10-12: Festival of the Lake
Our Lake of the Lake Roman Catholic Church will again host its annual fair at its campus on Lafitte Street in Mandeville. The free event will run 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Nov. 10-11, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 12. This year’s Festival of the Lake will include inflatables, a craft market, petting zoo, pony rides, sock hop, baseball mania, games, food, a “doggie dance” by the Northshore Humane Society and a host of live performances.
This year’s music lineup includes Bag of Donuts, Peyton Falgoust Band, Adam Pearce, and Christian Serpas & Ghost Town. Just be sure to bring chairs for the concert.
Activities at the festival will require tickets that can be purchased for 50 cents each. Early bird tickets will be available on the festival’s website at festivalofthelake.com.
•Nov. 11-12: 3 Rivers Art Festival
Touted as one of the largest juried art shows in the region, the 3 Rivers Art Festival returns to downtown Covington Nov. 11-12. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. More than 200 juried artists from across the nation, and world in some cases, will line both sides of Columbia Street featuring myriad artistic mediums.
“We have everything,” said event coordinator Sarada Bonnett. “Woodworking, watercolor, metalsmithing, glass and everything in between. 2D, 3D paintings. You name it, it’s there.”
Artists were vetted from nearly 500 applicants, she said, and the festival has been recognized by Sunshine Artist as one of the best in the country. Artist awards will be presented at a special event on Saturday night.
Live music will feature Crispin Schroeder, Those Olivier’s, The Teche Two, Dr. Ben Redwine, Lake Ragan, Ghost Town Duo, Jude LeBlanc and Jake Gunter.
A tented food court will be set up for patrons, and a children’s village will keep the kiddos occupied with a hands-on dinosaur experience, children’s museum activities and canvas painting. A separate student art contest is also part of the event and winners will be awarded that Sunday at 2 p.m. For more, visit covingtonthreeriversartfestival.com.

Fans who are in attendance will get to watch coach Willie Green lead Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and the rest of the Pelicans' roster through a one-hour live practice.

It is free to attend the event, which will be held at Smoothie King Center. Fans who want to go can reserve their tickets ahead of time online at www.pelicans.com/openpractice.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
