Summer Issue 3
September 2, 2019
Dear LaGuardia Families,

Welcome to the almost-almost first official Sunday Night News of the 2019-2020 School Year!   (Although because of the holiday, delivered this time on Monday...)

Welcome to the Wonderful World of LaGuardia - where students have earned the opportunity to immerse themselves in a world-renowned conservatory-style arts program combined with top-flight academic studies.

To our new families - what did you think of Orientation?  We enjoyed meeting the new students and new parents & guardians.  Our halls were full and bustling and the energy was positive!

We're so glad to have you join the LaGuardia Community!

Enormous thank you's to all the student and adult volunteers who helped out at Orientation - and an extra thank you to the volunteer parents of incoming freshman - wow - we love your involvement and encourage everyone to give it a try!  Here are some pics from Orientation this past Wednesday & Thursday.

Interim Acting Principal Ms. Yeou-Jey Vasconcelos in the Little Flower Theater welcoming parents & guardians at Orientation.

Student Government President Jonathan Green  sporting the red LaG T-shirt that is given to all student volunteers along with his newly-purchased  Drama Studio  zip-up hoo die!
Striking a pose - Drama Volunteers along with  Studio Co-Rep  Meg  and  Emily of Community Involvement

Amazing volunteers from the  Tech Studio  with Co-Rep Catherine wearing the brand-new LaG 'T' designed by alumnus, Isaac Mizrahi

What could be more welcoming than the smiles from these Juniors in the
Dance Studio?

The  Music Studio volunteers' beautiful display of "Music Merch!" and  we spy our hard-working Treasurer Irene

The  Art Studio is excited for a colorful and creative year ahead and is proud to show off its new logo, designed by Senior Gayoung Do

And while new students were learning about their studios and touring the school, inside the Little Flower Theater, new parents/guardians were hearing from LaGuardia PA Executive Board members and then received a treat from the Step Team - check it out !

If you didn't get a chance to ask your question at Orientation or have new questions, the Parents Association (PA) Representatives and Studio Representatives are always here to help!  Going forward, you can always find this information on the PA Website -

We're pleased to share with you that Interim Acting Principal Ms. Yeou-Jey Vasconcelos  (Yoo-Jay Vas-Con-Sel-Os), is in place and we're in good hands with her.  She has been working diligently over the summer to prepare for the new school year, while also getting up to speed on all things LaGuardia.

The PA Executive Board is building an excellent rapport with her and finding her open & responsive to all ideas, queries & a real joy to work with.

The process of finding permanent principal will be commencing this September.  Ms. Vasconcelos, along with other candidates will be considered in the hiring for a permanent Principal at LaGuardia HS.  The LaGuardia HS Parents Association will keep you - the parent body - as informed as possible and as appropriate during the process.

$412,316 has benefitted LaGuardia students so far!

You've funded 13 projects in the month of August alone!!!
Way to Go!

While the LaGuardia Community has made most of these contributions, many have been made by corporate donors, foundations (via matching grants) and unaffiliated individuals inspired by our teachers. When a project is close to being fully funded you will notice individuals from across the country pitching in to finish the project

Thank you to everyone who responded to our recent email blasts - we've already fully-funded three of the six projects!

Help give Mrs. Lytle's students simulated blood typing materials that will allow them to complete a hands-on laboratory experiment about human blood typing.
Help give Mrs. Lytle's students the chance to mix, blend and watch chemicals bubble with properties of matter chemistry kits!
Help give Ms. Harisiadis' students books for their short story book group unit.

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.
DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.
The parent of an incoming freshman student has organized a new Van service through Rocblvd from Staten Island and Brooklyn to LaGuardia.   The vans are all insured and licensed with seatbelts and are air conditioned. You can also track your student's location in the van service via apps so that you know when the driver arrives at the destination. The van service comes highly recommended from other parents.

Round trip daily service is $19.00 including gas, tolls and tunnels. Children's traveling time will be cut in almost half.
To learn more about the service, please email Ann Lopa at
The PA Executive Board is not affiliated with, nor in any way endorses the service.

Your LaGuardia student can download a FREE copy of the latest Microsoft Office software!  Click here for details.

Parents and guardians of NYC public school kids can be eligible for FREE Wi-Fi at home through The New York Public Library's Library HotSpot program, designed for patrons without home internet.
