Dear LaGuardia Families,

The curtain has fallen on the final performance of The Sound of Music - but we know that the "hills are still alive with the sound of music..."  To everyone who was involved with the production - a heartfelt congratulations on your professionalism, passion and time commitment.  Your message of  Stand with Us, United Against Hatred was so important to share with your audience and we are extremely appreciative and proud of you.

And just for fun we thought we'd share with you two Sound of Music show-goers dressed up in their Austrian best for the show.  Best dressed competition anyone? 


Now let's turn our attention to the Winter Gospel Concert on December 19th - tickets are on sale on the school website now! Lots of music to inspire us for the holiday season.  We also need volunteers for the concession stand!  Please scroll down for more information!

And on the visual side of things... LaGuardia's Semi-Annual Art Show opens on Friday, January 4th at 4:15 PM in the LaGuardia Lobby, Mezzanine and 2nd floor.  
Let's join together as a community as LaGuardia bursts at the seams with beautiful artwork selected by our teachers to represent every class offered in the Studio and students from all grades.

And.... as if this wasn't enough - we invite you to attend the Semi-Annual Concert on Friday, January 4th and Saturday the 5th at LaGuardia in the Concert Hall. Tickets are available here

The City Harvest Food Drive coordinated by students in Arista and Archon is continuing!  Contributions from the LaGuardia community will be given to  the many New York City residents (1.2 million) who are considered 'food insecure' and are facing hunger this holiday season. The most needed items include: canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned proteins (i.e. tuna or beans), peanut butter (plastic jars), macaroni and cheese (packaged), hot and cold cereal (packaged, family-sized), soups and juice packs

We hope to see you after the holiday break at our next General Meeting and Studio Meetings on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.  Please make it one of your New Year's resolutions to attend your first meeting - and come over and introduce yourself as a first-time attendee - we would be  so pleased to meet and welcome you!

Art Submissions - Deadline extended to December 21st
Be a part of the Rising Stars Art Exhibit that will accompany this year's performance!
This exhibit is meant to showcase the impressive talents of students whose art spans beyond the stage; all major/studios are welcome! For this exhibit, we need a plethora of submissions- 2 dimensional is preferred but not required. Please keep in mind that art submissions should, in some way, fit this year's theme, This Is Me: A Journey

The Winter Sports season runs from November thru March and includes Basketball, Gymnastics and Indoor Track for both Boys and Girls teams.

We still need more volunteers to do solicitations. We will definitely hold our spring auction but if we have a lot of early donations, may run a holiday auction so  DON'T DELAY, GET YOUR DONATIONS IN TODAY!!! 

Wherever you live or places you frequent, just ask them if they would please donate to LaGuardia Arts HS. Most people are very generous and have a hard time saying no to our amazing public school. Here is a printable  auction donation form

Help Sensei Rochkind's students fill their classes with Japanese culture!  Sensei Rochkind wants her students to explore Japanese culture to help them use their language skills and enrich their classroom experience. With a new Macbook students will be able to watch video clips about Japanese life, can edit video projects they create themselves, and can virtually explore Japan!
This technology will also allow Sensei Rochkind to assess students' pronunciation by leaving "voicemails" in Japanese using Google Voice or reading a passage aloud. With a new reliable computer, both the teacher and students can work better and learn better!

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.
Parents of Seniors and Juniors, this section is packed with information to help you and your child navigate the college application and financial aid process.
Attention Parents of Seniors:

FAFSA and CSS Profile Applications are Online. T hese are the two primary financial aid application sites used by colleges and universities.

All families with seniors attending college in the fall of 2019 and applying for need based aid and/or loans from the federal government, need to submit the FAFSA.   NOTE: the Deadline for submitting FAFSA for Early-Decision or Early-Action applications may also be early. Check the websites of the schools your student is applying to.  Be sure to go directly to the government website to fill in your FAFSA application -- any website that asks for fees to fill in your application is not a trustworthy site.

CSS Profile: Remember that if your student is applying for financial aid you must fill out the CSS Profile for every private school on your student's list. You can find the CSS Profile on College Board website Over 400 private colleges require completion of the  CSS application  from the College Board. The CSS requires a lot of detail and takes time complete.  Many colleges require a complete CSS profile with your college application. (Note that if you took the ACT and not the SAT, you will need to make a College Board account online in order to fill out the CSS Profile)
Senior Parents, be sure your student is using Naviance. If they have not signed up, they will be at a major disadvantage in terms of getting updates, newsletters, recommendations and other help from the guidance department. Naviance is a crucial tool to your child's college application success. Be sure you have set up a parent login as well.

Junior families should also be signing up for Naviance now to get notices from the guidance department.

With over 13,000 subscribers, the newsletter gives readers information they need to help school communities create and promote healthy, active learning environments for all New York City public school students.

This is a program for current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who may be considering a program for summer 2019 to further their talent in their studio, but who may not have the financial means.

The College Now STEM Research Academy at City Tech is a two-part program designed to provide high school students with an opportunity to develop s
trong college level research skills by engaging in authentic science inquiry and research activities. Selected students will be enrolled into a free Spring 2019 pre-college research course. Upon successful completion of the spring course, students will have the opportunity to apply for the 2019 STEM Summer Research Internship. The summer program is FREE to students. College Now covers the cost of tuition, books and supplies. Students who participate will also receive a City Tech College ID card, free lunch, metro card, and stipend upon completion of the summer internship program.
Deadline:  December 21st

An opportunity for sophomores and juniors (rising juniors and seniors) to earn six college credits and train with our full-time faculty.  Students live in Greenwich Village for four weeks as they develop their interest and talents in the arts.

Application Deadline:  January 9, 2019.  
Scholarship Application Deadline:  January 23, 2019.

Program Dates: Sunday, July 7 to Saturday, August 3, 2019.

Ladders for Leaders is a nationally recognized program that offers high school and college students the opportunity to participate in paid professional summer internships with leading corporations, non-profit organizations and government agencies in New York City. The program is an initiative of the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and supported by the NYC Center for Youth Employment and the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.  Online application,  available here

Calling all inquiring minds! Frick Forum for High School Students is an after-school program that promotes close looking and the free exchange of ideas. Forum members study great works of art from the Frick's permanent collection and special exhibitions. Frick Forum will run from 4:30- 6:00 pm on eight selected Fridays from January through May 2019. A final schedule will be shared with accepted students in January 2019.

The White House Internship Program is a public service leadership program that provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. Helping Tomorrow's Leaders Follow their Political Passions
A new organization founded in the spring of 2018 by James Kuntz, a 10th grade student at The Dalton School. The organization's founding mission is to make political internship and volunteer opportunities more readily available for high school students.

A Unique  Public Service Project for College Now Students
Sponsored by City University of New York and City Council leaders, the Model NYC Council Project as a way to expose high school students to the intricacies of legislative democracy and the realities associated with policy-making and representation in a diverse urban setting at the local level.

In this project, College Now students learn through a hands-on approach how political and policy processes affect them and their communities while developing leadership, research, and public-speaking skills. They work closely with faculty on a piece of legislative agenda. Guided by the faculty, participating students play a central role in learning what is involved in policy-making, political representation and how to support their community.  At the conclusion of the training sessions, College Now students come together in the City Council Chamber at City Hall to debate and vote on the legislative agenda they have been working on.
Eligibility: In order to participate in this project you must:
  • Be a NYC DOE high school junior or senior,
  • Be enrolled in or have completed at least one College Now course or activity,
  • Be able to attend all the training sessions and the final event:
    • Saturday training dates - March 23, 30, and April 6 from 11:00 AM-4:00 PM
    • Final event in the Council Chambers, City Hall - Friday, April 12th from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Do you create work that breaks from convention, blurs the boundaries between genres, and challenges notions of how a particular concept or emotion can be expressed? Judges for the Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards 2019 are looking for work that uses technique to advance an original perspective or a personal vision or voice, and shows skills being utilized to create something unique, powerful, and innovative. Deadlines for the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards fall between December 1, 2018-January 12, 2019. Depending on whether you are submitting art, writing, and/or Future New works, you could have up to  THREE  different deadlines. The best way to find your deadlines is to log into your Scholastic Awards account and check out the dates listed at the top of the right sidebar.

Reel Works Productions is a youth-run production company specializing in high quality, low-cost media for real clients -- while training tomorrow's storytellers. Led by award-winning young filmmakers under the guidance of professional filmmaker-mentors, Reel Works Productions has created original documentaries, educational shorts, corporate media and fundraising videos. Recent clients include American Express, Microsoft, WNET Thirteen, Time Warner, Hasbro and many NYC nonprofits.

To become a youth producer, you must be a graduate of The Lab or comparable filmmaking program and be fluent in Premier Pro and video production. Applicants may be asked to submit samples of their work and references. Youth Producers are selected for Fall, Spring and Summer sessions.

Ryan Levine (now a freshman at Hawken School in Cleveland) created the Kids Film It Festival to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation as a way to combine his and other kids' passion for movie making with a tremendous philanthropic cause. In two years, they have raised over $100,000 for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Last year, there were over 100 submissions from around the country within three age categories (8-11, 12-14, and 15-18) and three genres-film, animation, and music. This year' submission deadline is December 31, 2018. 

The Festival itself will once be held at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, the weekend of the Oscars, Friday February 22, 2019.  Get all the details here
