Issue #14
December 8, 2019

Dear LaGuardia Families -

We are delighted to report that Principal Yeou-Jey Vasconcelos and her baby son are doing fine and enjoying getting to know each other! On behalf of the entire LaGuardia Community, we wish you health, happiness and adventure!

December is a wonderful month at LaGuardia - not only for our students - but for their families who have many opportunities to see and hear their students' work. Please make a promise to yourself to attend at least one performance, exhibit or event at the school this month - you will really enjoy yourself!

It's also that time of year when postings appear about internships, spring programs, summer programs and very cool opportunities in general! Don't miss out on them! Just this week we've added at least seven new opportunities ranging from paid summer life-guarding jobs to museum and TV internships!  We invite you to scroll on down...
WEEK IN REVIEW....

A huge bravo to Mr. Davidson and his students' Senior One Acts! We so enjoyed your performances and seeing your development over the years.
Night of the Living Dead - Thriller
L to R:  Benji Timoner, Olivia Wohlgemuth, Bangaly Diomande, Rachel Shatzkin,    Lucy Machlan,  Thomas Bellavigna, Tommy Vines,  Nikki Makoveva,    Jay Zahn,    Chloe Stebenne,    Alex Astort-Fabra,    Kijani Ali-Gaulman,  Nia Curd, and  Geneva Foster-Narvez

Wasn't Cinderella amazing?   What a fantastic, beautiful, professional production! What a twist with the Wicked Stepsisters,  the Prince is in fact very humble & Charming and  Sebastian is very overlord-like not to mention the amazing Jean-Michel, the conscience of the village and of course the all-knowing, intuitive Fairy Godmother. It's not the Cinderella you grew up with!  If these photos of the Open & Closing Casts curtain calls aren't enough....

then check out this video! Everyone with whom we speak is either raving or eagerly awaiting their show date - and you don't yet have your tickets, honestly, get thee to the Box Office !  If tickets are no longer available on-line, arrive early (an hour) and please bring cash to pay at the door!

Perhaps you were also fortunate enough to attend the opening of The Fine Arts Department Cultural Art Show A truly impressive display that showcases the work of our talented students. Thanks to all the families and students who came out to see the show and support our students. We are so appreciative of the student curators, who not only worked to put up a great show, but came up with the concept for the show and made it all happen! Thanks as well to all of our parent and student volunteers. Looking for the perfect holiday gift? Shop online for LaG Art Studio merchandise! A few examples of the fantastic art works...

Our Show Choir Students  are making the quite the rounds! Last weekend they faced the elements to celebrate Midwinter's Eve on the Upper West Side where the Time Warner Center was bustling, despite the snowy conditions, and happy crowds gathered to hear our students and hum along! Today, they performed at the beautiful New York Public Library, where black-tied Show Choir singers entertained employees, volunteers, special guests and supporters of our city's libraries at a private holiday party! Just wait and see what Show Choir has scheduled for next weekend, Sunday, December 15th, when the group performs with the cast of Dear Evan Hansen at The NY Giants half-time show! Quite an incredible schedule - we know you sound beautiful - and we hope you are having a blast representing our school. Thank you!

We are looking forward to the Class of 2024! This was our last weekend of  Prospective Student Auditions and we heard there were yet more extremely talented students who are interested in becoming part of the LaGuardia community - we wish them all luck! And what can we say... to all the parents/guardians who donated their time this weekend and the past Audition weekends... thank you - we are so very grateful for you showing up, participating and spreading the LaGuardia love!

We always talk about how PARTICIPATION OF AS MANY FAMILIES AS POSSIBLE is KEY to our fundraising and volunteering - you know, if you're able to contribute, our students will benefit!

We also experienced plenty of the "other kind" of donation - the dollar kind! It was a great GivingTuesday for LaGuardia - on DonorsChoose, 7 teachers' projects were funded, with three receiving full funding! Our Facebook campaign also raised almost $9,000 and represented donations, large and small, from 79 individuals. Thank you for all you do!

FINDING YOUR COLLEGE!
Lists & Surveys

It's important to find the right mix of colleges to which to apply - these lists may help - but as with everything, we recommend using multiple sources to build your student's list.

Georgetown University - Center on Education & the Workforce
Using data from the expanded College Scorecard, this report ranks 4,500 colleges and universities by return on investment.  A First Try at ROI: Ranking 4,500 Colleges  finds that bachelor's degrees from private colleges, on average, have higher ROI than degrees from public colleges 40 years after enrollment. Community colleges and many certificate programs have the highest returns in the short term, 10 years after enrollment, though returns from bachelor's degrees eventually overtake those of most two-year credentials. A WESTSIDE EXPERIMENT | YOUNG ACTORS LABORATORY
Dates: July 6-10, 13-18, 2020, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
As the parent of a theatrically inclined adolescent, IRT's Westside Ex
periment summer theater program was everything I could have hoped for. The program's adult staff never underestimated the creative abilities of the youth, and provided them with the support and skills necessary to imagine, design and perform a remarkably sophisticated multi-media theatrical experience. My daughter made many friends over the 2 weeks of the program and was able to stretch her theatrical muscles in ways she never imagined, and thoroughly enjoyed.
For Ages 13-17

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.
DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.

Parents and guardians of NYC public school kids can be eligible for FREE Wi-Fi at home through The New York Public Library's Library HotSpot program, designed for patrons without home internet.
