Issue 22
February 10, 2019
Dear LaGuardia Families,

" It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves. "
- William Shakespeare

"For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the
sight of the stars makes me dream."
- Vincent Van Gogh

Well, our Stars twinkled, dreamed, shone and rose and while we watched them perform, it seemed certainly that their destiny was to be on that stage. We enjoyed every moment of Rising Stars - your creativity, enthusiasm and spirit.

The Rising Stars Art Show was also beautiful - and created the perfect ambiance to welcome the audience to the show.  Thank you to everyone involved with Rising Stars - all of you behind the scenes - a huge undertaking - and very worthwhile.  Nothing could be more true than to say that we couldn't have done it without you.

If you and your "Star" need to re-live the performance - and we think you should - here's  a link to order  the DVD, digital files and other options...

MORE TO CELEBRATE & ANTICIPATE IN THE ARTS
FOR FEBRUARY & MARCH

SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARD GOLD KEY WINNERS
Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation's youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Through the Awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Students across America submitted nearly 350,000 original works this year in 29 different categories of art and writing.

Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

LaGuardia did splendidly , with 48 Gold Key winners and 75 winning works total. That's 75 chances to go on to possibly win a national medal, which is no small feat. Please click here for a list of all LaGuardia High School Gold Key winners!

THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD
The Mystery of Edwin Drood is based on an unfinished book by Charles Dickens, adapted by Rupert Holmes as the first musical to ever have multiple endings. Set in the late 1800's in England, you will see a show within a show, a murder mystery unfold and an audience tasked with choosing the killer. Barked at from the proscenium and the aisles, this is an interactive theatrical experience. It won five Tonys in 1986, including "Best Musical," and "Best Original Score." An entertaining romp of a show, this not-to-be-missed musical event of LaGuardia's spring season will send you laughing out the door wishing for more!

LaGuardia Online Auction 2019
Our Online Auction is quickly approaching! This is one of our biggest school-wide fundraisers of the year.  The money raised goes to help support all studios, teachers & students.  We are in need of MORE donations to help make this a success.  This week we are focusing on restaurants and retail establishments.  Please ask the places that you frequent if they would support our school .  Most people say yes! You can even email them and attach the donation form.  So just ask your local businesses.  Every little bit helps.  Thanks for your continued support!"

The All School Appeal Continues...
We are excited about upcoming campaigns and believe that with increased participation we can actually exceed our goal all for the benefit of our students.  If you have not yet made a donation, please consider doing so. There's no minimum - whatever is the right amount for your family to contribute, will be appreciated and put to good use.

SPORTS
WINTER SPORTS CALENDAR
The Winter Sports season runs from November thru March and includes Basketball, Gymnastics and Indoor Track for both Boys and Girls teams.

What a busy last few days it's been for the LaGuardia Boys & Girls Track Teams. The PSAL Manhattan Borough Championships started off with a bang.  Captain Carol Nieves ran the 3000m and placed 6th. Arden Brown took 3rd place in her 1000m event and the 4x800m and 4x400m relay teams placed 4thand 5th respectively.

At the PSAL Invitational, the boys started off the morning with Aiden Islam qualifying for the 55m final and finishing 8th with a time of 7:52. The freshman 4x400 team finished in sixth place.  Tyson Keller and Nolan Schaefer did a one, two punch finish in their 1600m heat with a time of 5:54 and 5:46 respectively. Even though the boys did not medal that did not stop the boys from giving high fives to each other for some outstanding work and putting LaGuardia on the big screen television for a brief moment in the Staten Island Athletic Center.

The girls wrapped up the afternoon with Nicole Landeta finishing second place (6:08) in her 1500m heat, as well as Kayla Parker in her 600m (1:58) heat.  Willa Donovan was LaGuardia's brightest highlight of the day medaling 2nd place (5:51) in her Freshman 1500m.

Congratulations to all and thank you to all our athletes and certainly the parents for their outstanding support.

Boys' Varsity Gymnastics
Shout outs to John Lobello, High Bar 5.40 and Vaulting 8.00

DonorsChoose

The LaGuardia Community has donated
over  $391,966 so far!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

2 Donors Choose Projects are available!
Can you help these teachers fulfill their ideas?

THIS WEEK'S FEATURED PROJECT is for
Ms. Kingham's AP World History Students!

Help Ms. Kingham give her students access to an online Advanced Placement prep program.  This past year, students used technology to study current issues in Africa including environmental issues and the changing role of women. They used technology to create public service media spots to share their research with their fellow students. Technology has allowed us to engage with each other in meaningful ways.

Students need the ability to prepare for their AP exam in May in a systematic way. The online and digital platform will allow the students to pace themselves, track their problems, and troubleshoot important issues. By having the ability to go online, study, get questions answered and having feedback, the student can ask more pointed and directed questions in the classroom, and more reflective questions overall about course content.

PROJECT #2
Mrs. McGoey's Studying Personality in AP Psychology

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs. bit.ly/dcmatch
