Issue 27
March 17, 2019
Dear LaGuardia Families,

Did you get your green on? Whether as a participant or an observer, St. Patrick's Day is a NYC tradition and we invite you to extend that enjoyment for the day and contribute to our wonderful school (money is green too...!)

And speaking about LUCK.... You now have until Friday, March 22nd at midnight to purchase  Raffle Tickets for  The Mystery of Edwin Drood  - the winners will be announced on Saturday the 23rd!  Please scroll down for the link to purchase tickets and the available packages.  Winners of the Annual Benefit Gala Raffles will be announced soon.

LaGuardia is honored as one of only five NYC high schools to be selected for the Shubert Foundation's High School Theatre Festival for our 2018 All-School Musical, The Sound of Music. On Monday, March 18th, students will participate in master artist workshops before spending the afternoon in tech and rehearsals on the Broadway stage of the Music Box Theatre!  You can read the full story here
Which is an excellent lead-in to this news.... The eagerly-awaited decision about the 2019 All-School Musical has been announced! Please encourage your student to   sign-up here for a spot to audition for Rodgers & Hammerstein's - "Cinderella".  The All-School Musical is just that - an opportunity for students from all studios to join together and put on a performance that is widely regarded as one of the best high school performances in the entire country.  Audition dates are Tuesday, March 19th thru Monday, March 25th.  Call-backs begin the following week.  Performances are in December of 2019. Competition is strong, but if your child doesn't audition, you'll never know!  Make a note that in the Fall interviews will be held for student stage managers from all studios.

And congratulations to  Mikayla McClain who took first place in the 11th annual New York City August Wilson Monologue Competition sponsored by LEAP! students from nine New York high schools in four boroughs brought the audience to their feet as they embodied Wilson's characters and provided their own interpretations-immersing them in Wilson's world of 10 plays, referred to as The Century Cycle.   Read more here

Finally, before signing off:  This has been a week of human drama, tragedy and hope.  As a parent of a senior witnessing how hard LaGuardia students work on their academics and their craft; conversations about equity and access in the college admissions process have been front and center.  As a citizen of the world, I grow weary of the senseless violence which we humans inflict on each other.  Sometimes I feel so paralyzed by the enormity of the problems we create.  However, everyday I feel deep gratitude for this vibrant LaGuardia community and the privilege to witness the souls of our children through their art and their burgeoning political activism. Every show that I attend at LaGuardia floods me with hope and joy.  Please make a commitment to attend at least 2 shows outside of your child's studio. Let us continue to find ways to honor our common humanity. I am proud of students who joined the worldwide Climate Change protest.

This week I invite you to join me in reflecting on the words of psychologist Sidney Jourard.

Another person's words are the windows to his or her world, through which I see what it is like to be that person. When another speaks to me in truth, he or she becomes a transparent self, and releases in me an imaginative experience of his or her existence. If he or she cannot speak, if I do not listen, or if I cannot understand then we must remain suspicious strangers to one another, incognizant of our authentic similarities and differences.
In peace and in cooperation,
Shindy Johnson
PA President

The Last Days of Judas Iscariot
Performances March 21st to 24th

If you're not familiar with The Spring Drama Festival, it's essentially the final project for Senior Drama students - the culmination of their four years of study at LaGuardia.  There are three productions - traditionally a musical, a comedy and a drama.  We assure you that the quality of these productions rivals that of any local theater group - and some may even say they're as good as Broadway! Just do it - we encourage you to attend at least one performance of the show of your choice. Plan a night out - invite some friends and go to dinner before the show.

Over $397,937 has benefitted LaGuardia students so far!
While the LaGuardia Community has made most of these contributions, many have been made by corporate donors, foundations (via matching grants) and unaffiliated individuals inspired by our teachers. When a project is close to being fully funded you will notice individuals from across the country pitching in to finish the project

Posters for Regents Review
Mr. Hold is asking for help to give his students post-its, poster paper, and some cleaning supplies (disinfectant wipes) so that they can make amazing posters, and share amazing ideas as they review for the Regents in the coming months.
When students create their own posters, talk to each other, make rumors, share their wonders and wishes through their post-its, they find ways to own the knowledge in ways that only students can.
In their most recent unit, students were able to become experts with their own posters, read and share as a result of their expertise, and become embodied owners of their own knowledge and their own products. The posters, post-its, and even the wipes (which are used for small white boards) are all useful and helpful in this process.

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.
DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.
