Issue 9
November 4, 2018
Dear LaGuardia Families,

We said goodbye to Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 AM -- hope you enjoyed your extra hour of sleep! We hope that extra hour of sleep has activated your generosity!

While it may get darker earlier outside, inside LaGuardia our students' lights are bright as they pursue their craft! Please help us to keep our students lights burning brightly! Our Goal is 100% participation. Won't you help us?

Donate before December 1st and be entered in a raffle to win two of the best seats in the house to The Sound of Music. Don't miss this exciting opportunity! One entry per family.

No donation is too small!! We are aiming for 100% participation. The 10th donor who clicks our ASA ad each week after Sunday Night News is published will be entered in a drawing to take home some LaG Swag.

Let's get there together:
Increase the impact of your donation.
We make it easy for you to get CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS

Being part of the LaGuardia community gives us a lot to be grateful for on a weekly basis. Here are a few highlights:

Thank you to all who began the weekend by attending the first student art show of the year which opened Friday evening and congrats to our Art Studio and artists!  Click here to view a slide show of some of the works or better yet, see it in person -- the show runs through November 16th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the second floor Art Gallery.

Our PA and Studio meetings are this Wednesday, November 7th. 6:00 PM General meeting and 7:00 PM Studios. If you haven't yet attended a meeting, why not come out and learn more about what's happening at LaGuardia!

We wrapped up another weekend of auditions. We would not do it without the dedicated parents who spent many hours from 6:30 am to support studios with the auditions and to make auditioning families feel welcome with fresh snacks and hot coffee.

A huge thank you to Alumni & Friends of LaGuardia who arranged over 100 FREE tickets to today's matinee performance of Broadway's  Head Over Heels for LaGuardia HS Students & Alumni. So exciting to attend the show and represent the LaGuardia Community.

Please read on for more ways you can get involved and enrich our community and show love to a LaGuardia teacher.

Finally, before we sign off, Yvette and I would like to say a few *extra* words: In light of the climate in our nation, and the seemingly unrelenting and incomprehensible tragedies that tear at the fabric of our communities, we are eternally grateful to have the opportunity to serve LaGuardia -- a place where the best of our collective humanity is on display in small and significant ways every day. Let us continue to stand together, to disagree without vilification, and, as we strive to keep LaGuardia as an oasis of tolerance, love, education, art and culture let us never lose sight of our shared humanity.
We look forward to seeing and hearing from you soon.

Foundation Printmaking course needs art materials
Ms. Maniotis's students need water-based inks, linoleum, and monoprint plates to develop portfolios for their foundation printmaking course. In this class students learn the history of printmaking, make hanko stamps to practice cutting away before moving on to their first art monoprints on linoleum, then learn drypoint etching for their first intaglio print. These materials are vital to our students' learning. Thank you for making this possible!

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.

For Juniors:
Wednesday, November 14 th at LaGuardia: 11th Grade College Lunch Session (CH Back Lobby)

Attention Parents of Seniors:

FAFSA and CSS Profile Applications are Online. T hese are the two primary financial aid application sites used by colleges and universities.

All families with seniors attending college in the fall of 2019 and applying for need based aid and/or loans from the federal government, need to submit the FAFSA.   NOTE: the Deadline for submitting FAFSA for Early-Decision or Early-Action applications may also be early. Check the websites of the schools your student is applying to.
Be sure to go directly to the government website to fill in your FAFSA application -- any website that asks for fees to fill in your application is not a trustworthy site.

Go to to fill in your form. Click here for helpful information on filling out the form.

See also the  CSS application  from the College Board.
Senior Parents, be sure your student is using Naviance. If they have not signed up, they will be at a major disadvantage in terms of getting updates, newsletters, recommendations and other help from the guidance department. Naviance is a crucial tool to your child's college application success. Be sure you have set up a parent login as well.

Junior families should also be signing up for Naviance now to get notices from the guidance department.

Please contact Allison Price, our Parent Coordinator, for PupilPath and Naviance log-in information.
