COMMUNITY BUILDING

CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY AND OUR ART

The entire LaGuardia Arts Community is invited to participate in the Spanish Department's Annual Day of the Dead Community Ofrenda in the Front Lobby from October 30th to November 2nd. This traditional commemorative space is similar to the way many Mexican and Mexican American communities celebrate their ancestors' lives.

Why not begin your weekend by attending the first student art show of the year which is opening this Friday evening? November 2nd, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the second floor Art Gallery.

LAG GIRLS SWIM
Congratulations to the Girls' Swim Team at B Division Championships on Sunday! The 200 Medley Relay, comprised of Luna Miccoli, Janna Hussein, Regina Yu and Olivia Kirkbride, qualified for A Championships. Regina Yu and Luna Miccoli both swam a personal record for the season and qualified for A Champs in their individual events, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, respectively. Shout out to Olivia Campmany for finishing 2nd in the 500 Free and Penelope Keane for finishing 6th in the 200 Free!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

It takes an army of parent volunteers to help make LaGuardia the truly special place that it is. Many of our volunteers work tirelessly outside of the spotlight and it would be impossible to name them all. This week we want to take the opportunity to thank all of the volunteers who showed up to welcome families at our Open House on Monday October 22. We'd like to also give a special shout out to the teams of parent volunteers who showed up from 6:30 in the morning on Saturday and Sunday to welcome auditioning families, to warm them up with fresh hot coffee and to calm their frayed nerves. Special thanks also to the awesome new team that brings Sunday Night News alive and to the tireless perfectionists who produce our All School Musical. Thanks to the parent who stepped up to volunteer to manage our raffle for the All-School Musical.

FUNDRAISING
Fundraising is the lifeblood of the Parents Association. Can you imagine what the school would be like without the involvement of the PA? We don't want to either -- so please, join us!

Be on the lookout for the launch of our All-School Appeal!

LAGUARDIA PA ALL-SCHOOL APPEAL
We're so grateful to all of the families that have contributed to the All-School & Studio Appeal. It's honestly not how much you can give, but simply that you've taken the time and made the decision to support our school. Our goal is 100% participation -- let's get there together. www.laguardiahspa.org/donate

LaGuardia Auction 2019 Brainstorming Meeting

We held our first auction meeting of the year last week. Great energy as people shared ideas of how we can make it the best one yet. This is shaping up to be a great team. We still need more volunteers to do solicitations. We will definitely hold our spring auction but if we have a lot of early donations, may run a holiday auction so DON'T DELAY, GET YOUR DONATIONS IN TODAY!!!

Wherever you live or places you frequent, just ask them if they would please donate to LaGuardia Arts HS. Most people are very generous and have a hard time saying no to our amazing public school. Here is a printable auction donation form

If you weren't able to make last week's meeting but would like to be a part of our auction committee, please let Heather know at heatmac@aol.com. Our next meeting will be in the evening to accommodate differing schedules.

Open House & Auditions
Do you remember when your student was auditioning for LaGuardia? It's that time again! This past weekend, prospective students from Brooklyn put their best foot forward and students from other boroughs will be auditioning in the coming weeks. Please help us to introduce the LaGuardia community to parents while they wait for their children's auditions. It's also a great way to meet your fellow LaGuardia parents.

The Sound of Music: All-School Musical: Tickets Now On Sale!!!

Tickets for The Sound of Music are on sale and in high demand!

Our all-school musical sells out every year, so buy your tickets ASAP, especially for Friday and Saturday shows.

Please note that the musical is double-cast -- information about the performance dates for individual cast members is available at www.lagmusical.com.

Go to laguardiahs.tix.com to purchase your tickets. The school store will also have seats available for purchase during school hours. Those tickets will be available at the end of November. More details will be provided in the upcoming weeks.
Here's an anecdote from one of our parents who attended her first LaGuardia musical last year:

My child was a freshman in the school, and I was excited to see what "The Musical" was all about. I happened to be sitting next to an older couple, and presuming they were grandparents of a cast member, asked them whom they had come out to support. They smiled at me and responded that they don't know anyone at LaGuardia, but that the quality of LaGuardia productions is so high, that they never miss a show -- "just as good as Broadway," they responded!

ELEVATORS AND ESCALATORS UPDATE

ELEVATORS: Initial assessment revealed that two parts burned out. They were ordered. The passenger elevator will return to active service once the new parts have been installed. Students with medical conditions can ride the elevator with a pass. Student using crutches or other assisted mobility devices are allowed to use the elevator without first getting a pass.
ESCALATORS: The escalators are still being inspected and in certain cases steps have to be replaced then inspected again. More information on the time frame for completion of the work is being sought.

We look forward to seeing and hearing from you soon.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

In the past three years, 100% of our faculty's requests have been funded by parents and other generous supporters.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs. bit.ly/dcmatch

COLLEGE CORNER
Parents of Seniors and Juniors, this section is packed with information to help you and your child navigate the college appplication and financial aid process.
Attention Parents of Seniors:

FAFSA and CSS Profile Applications are Online. T hese are the two primary financial aid application sites used by colleges and universities.

All families with seniors attending college in the fall of 2019 and applying for need based aid and/or loans from the federal government, need to submit the FAFSA.   NOTE: the Deadline for submitting FAFSA for Early-Decision or Early-Action applications may be as early as is November 1. Check the websites of the schools your student is applying to.

Be sure to go directly to the government website to fill in your FAFSA application -- any website that asks for fees to fill in your application is not a trustworthy site.

Go to  fafsa.gov to fill in your form. Click here for helpful information on filling out the form.

See also the  CSS application  from the College Board.
Senior Parents, be sure your student is using Naviance. If they have not signed up, they will be at a major disadvantage in terms of getting updates, newsletters, recommendations and other help from the guidance department. Naviance is a crucial tool to your child's college application success. Be sure you have set up a parent login as well.

Junior families should also be signing up for Naviance now to get notices from the guidance department.

Please contact Allison Price, our Parent Coordinator, for PupilPath and Naviance log-in information. APrice7@schools.nyc.gov
