Issue 1
September 8, 2019
Dear LaGuardia Families,

How were your student's first two days? For new students, it's a lot to adjust to all at once - a new commute, our eight-story building (9 with the Mezzanine!), class schedules, new friends.  For returning students, so happy to have you back!

We'd like to make sure you're aware of the LaGuardia resources that can help your family's transition to our community.

This coming Thursday and Friday, the LaGuardia faculty and staff are hosting Freshmen Info Nights to orient new parents about how the school works and how the academic year flows. Families with students in Music, Drama & Tech are scheduled for Thursday and students in Art & Dance are on Friday - both evenings are from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in the LaG Library. This is a great chance to meet other new parents and ask the staff questions, so bring your list of them!

The Academic Forum is run by a team of four elected co-chairs who hold monthly meetings on a variety of academic topics--from easing into freshmen year and navigating school resources, to everything else in between that and college applications. Stay tuned for the date of the first Academic Forum.

In addition to Sunday Night News (SNN), you'll also receive the School Life email from the LaG administration. This is full of links to useful updates about sports, events, guidance and more so definitely keep an eye out for it!
For newcomers to LaGuardia - we've all been there and are here to help guide you to find the information you need.  For families with seniors - scroll down to our College 101 section where you'll find  information about college applications, finances and general information on the college application process.  We've added a new General Community Information section with links to general information that we find interesting.  Interested in Extracurricular Activities or upcoming Arts-related Competitions?  We have that too!  Our goal is to make your student's time at LaGuardia as enjoyable and profitable as possible.

Senior Portraits are scheduled for Saturday, September 14th. Please scroll down for more information!
If you didn't get a chance to ask your question at Orientation or have new questions, the Parents Association (PA) Representatives and Studio Representatives are always here to help!  Going forward, you can always find this information on the PA Website -

Also, LaGuardia, like any entity, has its own language, full of acronyms and abbreviations - if you'd like to know more - here's a full Glossary !
While online information is useful - there's nothing like "in-person" to really feel the vibe of our school.

Join us for the first PA meeting of the year!
Tuesday, September 17th

We have something special for our first meeting....  Come a half hour prior to the studio meetings and revel in new sounds of a musical interlude featuring a fresh in-house exciting pianist with LaG ensemble - in the Lobby before the studio meetings!

The suggested annual donation to the Drama Department is $500, but truly, we appreciate and need support at all levels to support our students and studio. Anyone who donates $25 to the Drama Studio PA Appeal will receive a FREE scrunchy-up tote bag - an awesome black bag with the Fame Logo and the Drama Studio.

Together, we can make it happen - our school is the sum of its parts - some big, some small, all needed and very much appreciated.

(and we do a lot of fundraising) but here are three great ways to contribute to LaGuardia without spending more than you already are!  Please share with your entire network of friends and family so that their purchases also support LaGuardia!

The more you shop, the more you earn for our school!
With every dollar you and your family members spend, Fairway Market will donate 3% or more of your total cash purchases to the LaGuardia PA. Just ask the cashier to scan your Fairway Market Community Partners card before you pay your bill.

Do you shop at  We certainly do and our Amazon purchases have contributed more to LaGuardia than we'd like to admit!

is a program that donates 0.5% of your eligible purchases on Amazon to a charity of your choice.   All you need to do is first select LaGuardia as your designated AmazonSmile charity (here's how to do so) and then start your shopping at . The donation will be made at no extra cost to you and you can choose from nearly one million public charitable organizations.  Though 0.5% is not a large donation and it isn't intended to replace your regular charitable activities, AmazonSmile is still a great way to take advantage of a service you're using anyways.

Get a Clean Closet and Earn Money for LaGuardia Arts!
T here's no better time than now to clean out your closets for a good cause!   Sign up for a  Schoola  bag!  By cleaning out your closet and putting a sweater and a coat into one of these pre-paid bags, you're helping to raise money for LaGuardia. You can do this multiple times, so even if you've sent it a bag earlier, click the link  and get a new one!
Here's more information about the  LaGuardia PA Schoola program.

$412,488 has benefitted LaGuardia students so far!

While the LaGuardia Community has made most of these contributions, many have been made by corporate donors, foundations (via matching grants) and unaffiliated individuals inspired by our teachers. When a project is close to being fully funded you will notice individuals from across the country pitching in to finish the project

Help give Mrs. Lytle's students simulated blood typing materials that will allow them to complete a hands-on laboratory experiment about human blood typing.
Help give Mrs. Lytle's students the chance to mix, blend and watch chemicals bubble with properties of matter chemistry kits!
Help give Ms. Harisiadis' students books for their short story book group unit.

Help give Mr. Rahman's students classroom supplies such as napkins and disinfecting wipes to protect them from various diseases. They need pens, pencils, label makers, and magnets along with other classroom supplies. The magnets will be used to represent protons, electrons, and neutrons.

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.
DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.

Your LaGuardia student can download a FREE copy of the latest Microsoft Office software!  Click here for details.

Parents and guardians of NYC public school kids can be eligible for FREE Wi-Fi at home through The New York Public Library's Library HotSpot program, designed for patrons without home internet.

For more information, click here.

Additional Meeting dates for the 2019-2020 School Year will be announced once our schedule is finalized.
