Summer 2025 Internship Program

The UMCES Appalachian Laboratory recently kicked off its fourth annual Summer Undergraduate Internship Program. This summer, four students from Frostburg State University and one from Garrett College are working closely with Lab scientists and staff to research wildfires, develop science communication tools, create video libraries and use chemistry to study bird migration. Professional development opportunities include field trips, workshops and networking events. These paid, full time internships run from late May to mid-August.

This year's program is made possible by generous support from the Naylor Family Trust Fund of the Community Trust Foundation and the Western Maryland Consortium, as well as from the National Science Foundation.

The Appalachian Laboratory Investors Network (TALIN)

TALIN

In our last newsletter, we shared exciting news about a new initiative at the Lab designed to support innovative science, an initiative made possible through a group of generous donors known collectively as the Appalachian Laboratory Investor Network (TALIN). Since that announcement, TALIN has held their inaugural meeting and funded their first three projects. We've recently launched a new website for TALIN and the research its members support. Now more than ever science at the UMCES Appalachian Laboratory needs your help!

A note from the Lab Director:

A healthy environment is essential to a healthy economy and society. The world-class research and education happening here at the Lab is helping to shape policies and decisions on local-to-global scales about things that matter most: clean air and water, healthy forests and wildlife, and sustainably produced food. Working alongside our scientists, faculty, and staff who care deeply about their work and are not just doing science but also growing it, gives me energy and optimism for the future. I hope you feel that way too. Our work is more important now than ever, but we can't do it alone. I'd welcome the opportunity to connect with you about how you can contribute to the mission of the Appalachian Lab.

With appreciation for your generosity and support,

David Nelson
