LabCoP Extended ECHO Session

on 8 October!

Join us this Thursday, 8 October 2026, at 16:00 East Africa Time for our LabCoP ECHO Session, where we discuss sustainability in laboratory medicine practice in Africa.

Sustainability has found its way into our daily conversations. Why? Because many aspects of society have realized that how we live cannot continue without consequence. Resources we thought were plentiful are disappearing or are polluted to the point they can no longer be used. This way of life is not sustainable.

This reality applies directly to laboratories, be they analytical, clinical, production, clean rooms, or research/development labs. Laboratories are resource-intensive: electricity, heating/ventilation/air conditioning, water, and generation of solid and chemical waste. Specific efforts now focus on reducing electricity and HVAC consumption, adopting alternative power such as solar, reducing water use, procuring products with lower environmental impact, and strengthening recycling programs for solid and chemical waste streams. These resources are terrible things to waste.

In this session, we raise awareness on sustainability efforts taking hold in laboratories across the globe and in Africa and explore practical approaches that can be adapted to different laboratory environments and available resources.

We will;

  • Cover an overview of global efforts to help laboratories implement and measure sustainable practices through practical programs and tools, including the My Green Lab Certification program.
  • share practical ways industry partners can support African laboratories in making sustainable choices through optimizing existing resources, sustainable purchasing, knowledge sharing, and identifying achievable projects, and
  • share some lived experiences in guiding an academic research institute in Africa in achieving “My Green Lab Certification".

Presenters

  • Scott Grant, Vice President of Certifications, My Green Lab
  • Carla Jacobs, Business Development & Lab Sustainability Manager, Lasec Group
  • Selisha Naidoo, Biosafety, Research Infrastructure and Compliance Specialist, Core BSLIII Platform Manager, Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, UCT
