Dear Margaret,

Today marks an important moment in the fight for safer social media as SAVE - Suicide Awareness Voices of Education joins the KiDS: Keep It Digitally Safe Campaign. The KiDS coalition, comprising more than a dozen organizations dedicated to making social media safer for youth, has officially launched a global scholarship contest to design creative social media warning labels to raise awareness of the dangers youth face on unregulated platforms and encourage systemic change.

The campaign highlights the increasing risks of cyberbullying, sextortion, sex trafficking, illegal drug sales, and negative impacts on youth mental health, including elevated rates of suicidal ideation. With the slogan “Every click has a cost. Label the risk,” the contest invites participants worldwide to submit designs for warning labels raising awareness of these dangers.

Submissions open on February 13, 2025, at keepitdigitallysafe.org and will close at 8 a.m. CST on Friday, April 18, 2025. Participants may enter individually or in teams of up to five members. Submissions can include artwork, slogans, videos, and other creative media. Winning entries will be awarded the following prizes:

  • 1st Place: $5,000 scholarship
  • 2nd Place: $3,000 scholarship
  • 3rd Place: $2,000 scholarship

“Social media has become a breeding ground for harmful content and predatory practices that disproportionately affect young people. This contest is not only about raising awareness but also about pushing for real, systemic change through legislation like the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and state-based age-appropriate design code bills. Warning labels are a powerful tool to educate users, but they must be part of a broader strategy to protect young people from the dangers they face online.”

- Erich Mische, CEO, SAVE

Big tech's influence and funding are immense. SAVE's trailblazing advocacy and critical legislative efforts, including the KiDS Campaign, are undeniably demanding of resources. But we stand at a pivotal moment.

The time is now for robust, common-sense legislation to safeguard our youth online and mitigate the profound harms of unregulated social media. We must rally together to champion a safer digital landscape for everyone. Help fuel our mission and donate today at save.org/donate.
