Dear Friend,
What do COVID, Climate Change, and racial justice have in common? A willing suspension of disbelief - or an inversion of it. There are many times when I do not feel these threats, so it's hard to believe that they are real. Will I get COVID? Nah. Is this heat and shrinking beach the new normal? Nah. But I suspend what I am feeling (hoping?), put on a mask, and reduce my environmental footprint, because I know, intellectually, that is what I need to do. As the summer sped by in a haze of heat, protests, COVID, fire, and flood, we may have seen enough tangible outcomes to shift from disbelief to overwhelm. What can be done? Hope in action. At Climate Creatives, our response is to help businesses and organizations design a strategy to evolve, and to spur culture change at all scales. Water Change: Where Spirit, Nature, and Civilization Meet
This outdoor public art exhibition is sponsored by The Umbrella and Concord Natural Resources Division. The theme, water in the context of climate change, is explored in 17 installations along the trails in the Concord Town Forest. Original poems by Joanne DeSimone Reynolds inspired by the artwork accompany each piece.
Curator's Note:
My deep gratitude to the artists and poet for their thoughtful responses to the theme and site, and to The Umbrella for inviting me to curate. The quality of the work is extremely high, with diversity of media, form, and ideas. I am especially pleased with this exhibition given COVID, and the level of uncertainty we were facing when we released the call for artists. Please come see one of the few events that you can still enjoy as it was intended!
Migration (detail), by Susan Israel
Reclaimed objects, paint, 2020
All species are responding to increasing changes in their habitats due to climate change. Fleeing too little or too much water and heat, plants and animals have begun a massive global migration. By 2050, we will have an estimated 25 Mil - 1Bil climate migrants globally, and 30 - 50% of plant and animal species could go extinct due to climate change. Many of the remaining species will survive by migrating. Work to elect lawmakers who will act on climate change, and vote out this corrupt administration. Learn other ways to act on climate.
