Village Project Updates:
2021 Alley and Parking Lot Reconstruction Project: Work continues on the 2021 Alley and Parking Lot Reconstruction Project. Updated project schedule (all dates are estimates and weather permitting):
  • Alley north of 100-200 W. Henry Clay St. – Estimated completion date 9/15/21
  • Alley at 5200-5300 Lydell and Bay Ridge Avenues – Estimated completion date 9/15/21
  • Alley at 5300-5500 Lydell and Bay Ridge Avenues, weather permitting – Estimated completion date 9/15/21.
  • Alley behind Silver Spring Drive between Kent Ave and Shoreland Ave – Estimated completion date 10/6/21.
  • Sept. / Oct. 2021: Municipal Parking Lot expansion (South of Winkies/Bruegger’s Bagels) – Estimated start date 9/14/21. Estimated completion date 10/1/21.

In addition to providing a newly constructed alley, this project will provide storm water quality improvements with the assistance of MMSD Green Solutions Fund stormwater funding. Permeable paving bricks with an underdrain system will be installed in the middle of the new concrete alley, filtering out pollutants as well as reducing the storm water quantity generated through the detention of stormwater during rain events. The municipal parking lot south of Winkies/ Bruegger’s Bagels will be expanded to the south through the use of permeable pavers as well.
Village Hall/Library Parking Lot Bioswale: Finishing touches were completed last week on the stormwater bioswale recently installed between the Library and Village Hall, next to the parking lot. The bioswale captures stormwater runoff from the parking lot as well as the roadway pavement on Marlborough Drive. The Village Hall/Library Parking Lot will be closed to the public until September 9, 2021, to accommodate concrete curing related to the bioswale installation.

The Village Hall Parking lot is located within one of the Village’s Lake Michigan drainage subbasins and discharges into the lake through the storm sewer outfall located at Silver Spring Park. An educational sign explaining how the bioswale works will be posted next to the street sidewalk. Click here to preview the educational signage.
Reminder - Klode Park Beach Reconstruction: Work will begin the week of September 13, 2021, at Whitefish Bay’s Klode Park Beach to address previous storm damage and ongoing erosion—and to help protect this beloved community resource for years to come.

The beach and parking lot will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic during construction period. Please see the included map. Work will take about four weeks to complete, weather permitting. Click here to learn more about the project. If you have questions about this project, please contact John Edlebeck, P.E., Director of Public Works, at j.edlebeck@wfbvillage.org or 414-962-6690 Ext. 114.

NSHD Healthy Highlight 8/31/21: Electronics Recycling

Do you have old cell phones and other electronics in your home? Recently there were changes in Wisconsin recycling laws, and Wisconsinites may not realize that many electronics can no longer be put into the trash. Electronic waste must be reused, recycled, or managed as hazardous waste. Electronics, like cell phones, laptops, tablets, and TVs may contain materials, such as lead or mercury, that are considered hazardous. These materials, if not recycled properly, may pollute the environment or harm human health if not correctly managed. Electronics also contain valuable materials that can be recovered through recycling of them, responsibly.

The following electronics can no longer be put in the trash in Wisconsin or sent to Wisconsin landfills and incinerators. These items should be reused, donated, or recycled.
  • TVs;
  • Computers (desktop, laptop, netbook and tablet computers);
  • Printers (including those that scan, fax and/or copy and 3-D printers);
  • Monitors;
  • Other computer accessories (including keyboards, mice, speakers, external hard drives and flash drives);
  • E-readers;
  • DVD players, VCRs and other video players (i.e., DVRs);
  • Fax machines;
  • Cell phones; and
  • Major appliances, including air conditioners, clothes washers and dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, ovens, dehumidifiers, furnaces, boilers, water heaters and microwave ovens.
Many other electronic items may be eligible for recycling. Check with your local electronic waste recycler to see what is accepted.  How to recycle electronics in Wisconsin provides great resources on recycling electronics.

The DNR has put together an interactive E-Cycle Wisconsin registered collection sites map that allows residents and K-12 schools to find locations near them, accepting electronic waste for recycling.
