Labor Day

on CATV Government Channel 1085/170

Rest easy this coming weekend, because CATV will be keeping its nose to the grindstone. We're doing a deep dive into all things work-related

We are all fast-food workers

Hear labor historian Annelise Orleck, author of We Are All Fast-Food Workers Now, at the Norwich Bookstore in this 2018 appearance recorded by CATV. This Dartmouth professor met low-wage workers from Brazil to South Africa to Chicago to rural Vermont and documented their struggle for higher pay. Some credit her book for jumpstarting the movement to increase the U.S. minimum wage.

Advanced guard of a massive moral revolution

Labor leader and MLK aide A. Philip Randolph got his start as a Harlem elevator operator before organizing Black railroad workers and compelling Uncle Sam to employ African-Americans in defense factories. A co-organizer of the March on Washington, Randolph inspired the audience, "We are the advance guard of a massive moral revolution for jobs and freedom."

"Stick" We Win: The Amoskeag Strike of 1922

One hundred years ago 15,000 Manchester, NH mill workers walked off their jobs at the Amoskeag Mills in an important event in labor history that marked the beginning of the end of the state's textile industry.

Antitrust at the crossroads

Dartmouth's Rockefeller Center presents Federal Trade Commissioner Noah Joshua Phillips '00 reflecting on the goals of antitrust, the populist voices calling for reform, and whether the antitrust laws are equipped to solve every societal ill the reformists want competition law to address. This one's pretty brainy, but don't worry. There will be no final exam at CATV.

White River Junction hosts First Fridays, where shops, studios, and galleries stay open late. It's an impromptu first Friday of the month party and exhibition.

Come dance with us, enjoy some delicious food and stroll our fancy new sidewalks to check out First Friday festivities with music at Revolution, JAM, Long River Gallery, Flourish Beauty Lab and others in the WRJ downtown. Be sure to make your way to the Tip Top Building where Tip Top Pottery will be open 'til 9pm and hit up Ava's Candy for a late summer ice cream cone and chill with a craft cocktail at Wolf Tree. Our local businesses on the Gates-Briggs block can use your extra love and support as we recover from recent basement flood.  You're invited to give to Tuckerbox & Piecemeal Pies if you can manage a financial contribution.
