2021 Water Quality Sampling Complete Lead by Kieran Molony, the Lake of Bays Association water-quality testing team sampled our lake water three times over the summer, in 20 locations. Thanks to Margaret Casey, Pascale Cloutier, Paul Fraser, Penny Thomas and Stephan Von Buttlar for their volunteer efforts. Watch Out for Turtle Hatchlings! Turtle hatchlings are just now emerging from their eggs and making their way towards water. Many turtles end up laying eggs on roadsides where there is sand or gravel that is relatively easy to dig up. The eggs of snapping turtles were laid between mid-May and mid-July. The eggs incubate for 80 to 90 days and the first to be laid are hatching now. These roadside babies sometimes end up needing to cross the road to get to water. They are small and hard to spot and face imminent danger from vehicles and predators when out in the open. Their survival rate is small. Please keep an eye open for them and do your best to avoid them. If you want to help these little hatchlings please do so cautiously. Pull over and do not venture onto the road until it is safe to do so.  Hatchlings need to be brought to the nearest shallow body of water with lots of vegetation for protection and within one kilometre in the direction they were heading. SS Bigwin Update As many of you have noticed, the SS Bigwin is in the water at Dorset, all painted up and seemingly ready to go, but she has not been sailing this season. Normal Spring maintenance and repairs were done, but Covid restrictions on the number of passengers allowed on board, made it impractical to sail. Some additional repairs should be complete by next summer. The Board of Directors is pleased with the ongoing grant support from the federal and provincial governments. In the meantime, the Bigwin Museum is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. BOOK FOR NEXT SUMMER: Visit the SS Bigwin Website >
