90 FOOT 'VESSEL OF CONCERN' SINKS IN LADYSMITH HARBOUR, LEAKS OIL
On Saturday, October 21, 2017 a 90 foot wooden vessel built in 1918, named the Anapaya, sank and leaked fuel in Ladysmith Harbour. Transport Canada was aware of the vessel's risk, but failed to take any action until after the sinking and resulting oil spill. For the full Press Release from MP Sheila Malcolmson
It's Time for Action on Abandoned Vessels
The Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce invites you to help support our MP Sheila Malcolmson by signing a petition to support Bill C-352. You can support this Bill by signing the petition at the Chamber Office and/or by taking a copy of the petition to your business (which the Chamber will make available to you) and have your customers/clients sign it.
Ms. Malcolmson has introduced the Bill to:
* End the run-around and finger-pointing by designating Coast Guard as the agency responsible for directing the removal & recycling of abandoned vessels
* Build a coast-wide strategy in cooperation with local and provincial governments
* Get taxpayers off the hook by fixing vessel registration and creating a fee to help cover the cost of vessel disposal
* Prevent vessels from becoming hazards by piloting a turn-in program at safe recycling facilities
* Create good green jobs by supporting local marine salvage businesses.
Town moves forward to remove Derelict Vessels from Ladysmith Harbour
The Town of Ladysmith is moving forward with plans to address the serious issue of derelict and abandoned boats in the Ladysmith Harbour by applying for a federal grant and posting a public notice aimed at 9 derelict boats. Find out more at http://ow.ly/6p7730g64aT
