Supporting Visitors, Planning Ahead

As Ladysmith welcomes the busy summer season, the Chamber shifts its focus to enhancing visitor services at the Visitor Centre—now open daily. With gratitude to the Canada Summer Jobs program and the support of our local MP, we welcome aboard three talented summer students. Their enthusiasm and dedication will play a crucial role in delivering exceptional experiences to our visitors.

While we take a strategic pause from hosting events during the summer months, the Chamber office remains open and active—we’re here and working for our business community. This period allows us to focus on behind-the-scenes planning for upcoming projects and fall initiatives, laying the groundwork for a strong and engaging season ahead.

EASE OF DOING BUSINESS: B.C. advancing easier ways of doing business

Streamlining processes to reduce barriers, cut red tape, foster innovation and create a more supportive, business-friendly environment in B.C. are the goals as the Province launches an ease-of-doing-business review.

“We are listening to B.C. businesses as we work to ensure our province is an easy place to do business,” said Diana Gibson, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. “This review will help us to continue to modernize our regulatory and permitting systems, as we secure B.C.’s position as the economic engine of Canada’s new economy.”

Businesses are invited to share their ideas, challenges and suggestions through an online website portal until fall 2025. By involving entrepreneurs, business owners and business-sector partners in B.C., the Province will gain a clearer understanding of current on-the-ground challenges when establishing or growing a business. Information gathered throughout the review will help government establish a set of performance measurements to make it easier for companies and organizations of all sizes and sectors to do business in B.C.

Free Business Continuity Planning Program Launches in Cowichan - CVRD

Economic Development Cowichan and Community Futures Central Island have launched a Business Continuity Planning Program. The program works with businesses to create their continuity plan and help them adapt and thrive through disruptions like wildires and tariffs. They are seeking 8 Cowichan businesses to participate in this fully-funded (i.e., free) program.

Town of Ladysmith

Downtown parking changes during Island Hotel redevelopment.

Ladysmith, BC — Construction is officially set to begin on the long-anticipated redevelopment of the Island Hotel, a heritage-designated building located at 440 1st Avenue.

A new five-storey building will replace the original three-storey structure that was built in 1900. Once completed, it will feature ground-floor commercial tenant space and 22 residential units above, topped with a rooftop patio. Although the building will be fully demolished, the original façade will be preserved and incorporated into the new structure.

A soft start to construction took place on June 16, beginning with fencing off a portion of the Town-owned parking lot at 117 Gatacre Street. The initial work will allow the developer to install a site office trailer and temporary facilities.
