Ladysmith Chamber ED Update: June 2023
|
The theme, Focusing Forward …. Together
Today I am reflecting on my week away at the BC Chamber Executives AGM and conference followed by the BC Chamber AGM and Conference. What an intense week!
The BC Chamber Executives is an organization I am very grateful for as through this membership, my fellow Executive Directors form my “BC team”. We are an interesting mix of experience, skill sets and business sizes but we ALL share something in common – a desire to make a difference in our respective communities. We share the challenges of leading a non-profit, where there is so much reliance on funding whether it be through grants, membership, fundraising or our new focus of non-dues revenue. Our business communities share challenges whether it be workforce housing, labor market or increased costs of doing business. We are a team that is spread across our Province sharing a passion to help our business communities and to support local business. To make a difference in our communities.....

Sponsorship Opportunities
|
Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce we would like to invite you to Participate and/or consider becoming a Sponsor of our Annual Memorial Golf Classic. We are happy to recognize the Ladysmith & District Credit Union as this year’s Title Sponsor.
This year the Memorial will be honouring Brian Marshall and is being sponsored by his friends Brian Childs, Luke Kolk, Wayne Richmond, Blaine Froats, Gerry Clarke. Partial proceeds of the tournament will be going towards a memorial bench in honour of Brian. Brian was a close friend to many and a supporter of everything Ladysmith! His absence in the business community is sorely missed.
The Annual Golf Classic, which is the marquee fundraising event for the Chamber, is one of the most unique marketing opportunities that the Chamber offers. Sponsorship choices literally cover the golf course and businesses can adopt the level which best suits their needs.
The Tournament is held each June and brings together close to 100 business and government leaders to golf, network, win prizes, bid on fabulous auction items and of course to have loads of fun.
Please join us on June 16th, 2023 at Cottonwood Golf Course for the Ladysmith Chamber’s Annual Memorial Golf Classic and make sure your business is well represented.

Underused Housing Tax Educational Webinar
|
The Chamber has partnered with Canada Revenue Agency in hosting a free Underused Housing Tax educational webinar on Thursday June 22nd from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
The Underused Housing Tax is an annual 1% tax on the ownership of vacant or underused housing in Canada that took effect on January 1, 2022. The tax usually applies to non-resident, non-Canadian owners. In some situations, however, it also applies to Canadian owners. This webinar is a summary of some of the most important information about the Underused Housing Tax.
This webinar is being facilitated by Jordan Carr, a Senior Liaison Officer with Canada Revenue Agency. Jordan holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Accounting. Since graduating, Jordan has work for the CRA in multiple departments and has received specialized training from the CRA. Currently, Jordan as a Senior Liaison Officer, contacts small business owners to help them understand their obligations for taxes and how to maintain better books and records.
Other resources can be found on CRA’s Underused Housing Tax web page, including the Underused housing tax notices, on canada.ca/cra-uht.

Top 10 Steps to Prepare Your Business for Evacuation
|
If you are on evacuation alert or think you will be put on evacuation alert, there are some important steps you will want to consider. If you have an evacuation plan, review the plan and start the implementation process. If you do not have an evacuation plan, here are 10 things to consider:
1. Protect your information – back up electronic files using a USB stick, emailing them to yourself, backing up to an online ‘cloud’ and grabbing your laptop, external hard drive, or computer tower if needed.
2. Pack insurance and registration information for all commercial vehicles in your evacuation kit.
3. Preparing for an Insurance Claim – take pictures and/or a video of your business pointing out key equipment. Don’t forget to take a copy of your insurance documents with you.
4. Remove any uncertainty as to what staff should do in an emergency. Assign tasks to help staff respond as quickly as possible. Make sure you have their contact information and out of area contacts......
