FROM YOUR CHAMBER

We are excited to share the progress being made on the Ladysmith Train Station Redevelopment Project, a $1 million initiative funded through the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP), in partnership with the Island Corridor Foundation.

Project Milestones to Date:

  • May 2025– Received REDIP funding of $1 million
  • July–August 2025– Issued an RFP for a Master Planner and hired DAUStudio.
  • September 2025– Hosted a HiRail bus in Ladysmith, sparking conversations around new possibilities for regional connection, accessibility, and sustainable transportation between Nanaimo, Ladysmith, and Chemainus

Next Steps:

  • Fall 2025 Issue an RFP for early site preparation, mobilization and construction hoarding.
  • Late 2025– Issue an RFP for full construction services
  • 2026– Begin major renovations on the train station.
  • Continue fundraising efforts, with $200,000 still needed to meet our $1.2 million project budget.

This redevelopment will not only preserve an important piece of Ladysmith’s heritage but also create a vibrant new home for the Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre—strengthening tourism, economic growth, and community connection.

Community Conversations at the Station

Community Conversations at the Station

The Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce and the Island Corridor Foundation were pleased to welcome community members today for a lively “chit chat and show-and-tell” at the historic Ladysmith Station. The gathering provided an opportunity to share ideas, spark conversation, and explore possibilities for the future of this much-loved community landmark.

One idea that captured the imagination of many was the introduction of a hi-rail bus — a unique vehicle that can travel both on traditional roads and along rail lines. This innovative concept is opening up important conversations about connection, accessibility, and sustainable innovation, while also highlighting the potential for new tourism experiences that could draw visitors to Ladysmith and the surrounding region.

Warning for Chamber Member Businesses

Lately, businesses in BC have been getting emails and letters claiming they’ve “won” or been “selected” for an award. Sounds exciting — but there’s a catch.

These are vanity award scams. Here’s how they work:

• You get a surprise message congratulating you.

• The award comes from an unknown or vague organization.

• To accept, you’re asked to pay for a certificate, plaque, press release, or directory listing.

• Some even push “premium marketing packages” worth hundreds of dollars.

Red flags: no nomination process, no judges, urgent “act now” language, and an award that disappears if you don’t pay.

Advice from the Better Business Bureau:

• Don’t pay to accept unsolicited awards.

• Do your research before promoting any “award-winning” claim.

• Warn your staff so they don’t get tricked.

Consumers: be cautious when you see “award-winning” claims online. Ask where the award came from.

Businesses: build credibility through real associations, local Chambers, or community recognition — not by buying fake awards.

Please share this with fellow business owners. Let’s stop these scams before they spread further. 🌿
