A NOTE FROM YOUR CHAMBER

With new U.S. tariffs now affecting Canadian goods and Canada's response taking effect September 8, we know many businesses are trying to understand what these changes could mean for their operations, costs and customers.

We've put together this special Chamber update to help members find reliable information and identify supports that may be available to their businesses.

WHAT'S CHANGED?

As of August 22, 2026, the United States has imposed a 50% tariff on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods across several categories.

Canada has responded with new counter-tariffs covering approximately $27.6 billion of U.S. imports, with the measures taking effect September 8, 2026. The list includes more than 700 products and targets sectors including steel, dairy, machinery, electronics and other goods.

Important: Tariff treatment can vary significantly depending on the product, country of origin, tariff classification and applicable trade rules. Businesses involved in importing or exporting should check the specific requirements that apply to their goods.

SUPPORT FOR BUSINESSES AFFECTED BY U.S. TARIFFS

With ongoing uncertainty surrounding Canada-U.S. trade, the Government of Canada has announced new and enhanced supports for Canadian businesses and workers affected by U.S. tariffs.

The $7.5-billion package includes measures designed to help businesses manage short-term challenges, maintain operations, adapt to changing markets and strengthen their competitiveness. Supports include financing and funding programs, assistance for exporters, tariff relief measures, and programs to help businesses diversify into new markets.

For workers, available supports include enhanced Employment Insurance measures, training opportunities and employment services for those affected by tariff-related disruptions.

Is your business being impacted by U.S. tariffs? Take a few minutes to explore the supports that may be available to you. The Government of Canada has created a central resource with information on eligibility, funding and application details.

We encourage members to review the individual program requirements carefully, as eligibility and application processes vary.

PST EXPANDS OCTOBER 1:

Your Step-by-Step How-To Guide

Starting October 1, 2026, 7% PST applies for the first time to accounting and bookkeeping, architectural, engineering and geoscience, security, non-residential real estate, and securities services. For most businesses, this is a new cost. Unlike GST, PST on services generally cannot be recovered through input tax credits.

The BC Chamber of Commerce has built a practical how-to guide for both sides of this change: what service providers need to do to register and start charging PST, and what every other business should do now to budget for it and talk to their accountant about timing.
