Lafayette 5th Grade Family Graduation Night Potluck Picnic

graphic-summer-park.jpg Lafayette 5th Grade Family Graduation Night Potluck Picnic
5:30 PM Friday June 9 at Pierce Mill Picnic Area in Rock Creek Park

Hello 5th Grade Families, graduation day is almost here but there is still time for one last wonderful Lafayette tradition. The Post Graduation Family Celebration on the night of Graduation. For years Lafayette families have gathered together on the night of graduation for a casual potluck feast, coming full circle from that first parent potluck in Pre-K or Kindergarten when little did you know as a parent, you were meeting some of your best friends for the next few decades.

This year, we have reserved the Pierce Mill Picnic Area otherwise known as Picnic Area #1 in Rock Creek for Friday June 9 from 5:30 until it gets dark for a fun family potluck picnic and have created a sign-up genius for folks to list what they can bring. The event is free, just bring a dish or something to share with the group. You can sign up here. www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0F45AAA82BA0F49-lafayette1

You don't need to cook. Some of folks are bringing pizzas. Hosts will provide plates, cups, napkins, and utensils. The picnic site includes a covered pavilion and picnic tables for our use as well as restrooms. We will also provide charcoal and will have the grills lit, if you would like to bring items to grill. All 5th grade families and extended families are welcome to come. Since it is National Park Property, alcohol is prohibited and all pets must be on a leash. But we can bring frisbees and soccer balls, footballs, baseballs, even bocce and badminton if someone feels inspired.

This is a super casual event. Come by for 20 minutes or two hours and celebrate the Lafayette Class of 2017. We look forward to seeing you!

Library Books

As the school year closes,  all library books must be returned!  All books were due June 1, but over 700 books have still not been returned!  Please, log onto our online catalog https://search.follettsoftware.com/metasearch/ui/5925/ with your student's ID number and birth date and review what they
have checked out.  Books can be dropped off in the book return outside the library anytime the building is open. DCPS does not require students to replace or pay for lost books. We do need to k now they're gone, though! Please email Ms. Leese at   rachel.leese@dc.gov if you can't find an item.  Any book that isn't returned this year will be a book that our students can't enjoy next year!

Bears Flag Football Wrap Up

The Bears had an amazing run in their inaugural flag football season this spring. A hard-working team of 4th and 5th graders were undefeated in the regular season, beating Dorothy Height 17-7 in their final regular season game last Wednesday for a 4-0 record. Alas, after an awesome but exhausting field day last Friday, they fell to Wheatley in the City semi-final playoffs, 20-7. Huge thanks to their awesome coaches Shawn Bell and Jess Campbell for organizing and coaching the team, team photographer Stacy Beck for her awesome photos and to amazing team Mom, the indefatigable Jenny Backus!

Fun Weekend of Auction Parties

Auction Parties have been happening every weekend since the Auction.  These parent organized parties are a great way for parents and kids to meet new people.  Up this past weekend, the Lafayette Moms went to Bollywood and  Lafayette kids from Pre-K through 5th grade turned the world upside down with a Hamiliton Themed Walking Tour through Washington DC  Check out these fun photos. They even tweeted messages to Lin Miranda and the HAMILTON Musical team.  And you should have heard all the kids singing on the bus, they knew the whole show!

Summer Reading Lists

Rising 1st through 5th grade students have REQUIRED summer reading or projects. You can find those assignments in the 2017-summer-reading-guide, which also contains top-notch reading suggestions for every grade. Have a great summer!

Summer coding tutor. My name is Joseph Kaperst, and I am a computer science student here at Stanford University.
Originally from the DC area, I attended Lafayette. In High School, I started District CoderDojo, a nonprofit organization that teaches students how to code. For more information, check out our website: https://districtcoderdojo.com/. In addition to my work with founding the Dojo, I organize and write tasks for the Bebras Computing Challenge. Over 1 million students participate in this challenge each year. Named a Bethesda Magazine Top Teen for my work in computer science education, I am offering up tutoring services to Lafayette students. I have a flexible schedule, and I am able to teach all levels. With many students having time over the summer, it is a great opportunity to build a strong foundation in computer science. Please contact me with any questions. Joseph Kaperst 301-919-1856.

Washington Walks.  Looking for something fun and educational to do over summer break?  Check out Washington Walks, a wonderful local based walking tour company right here in DC at  www.washingtonwalks.com . They are great with kids - especially Caroline and Andrew, and put together a custom tour for a group of Lafayette folks this past weekend that was really informative, age appropriate and fun. We all learned a lot, even the adults.  They run public tours every weekend from April to November. Walks cost $20( $5 off for folks with military or federal ids) and  last two hours. No reservation is required. You can reach them at  202-484--1565 .  Topics include Women Who Changed America, Hamilton's DC,  Abraham Lincoln's Washington, Memorials, Monuments and so much more.   It's a great way to learn about the amazing city we live in.
