Lafayette Gives Back
HSA General Meeting
Parent/Teacher Conference Day
Pi Day and Pizza Night at Potomac Pizza
End of Term
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and the spectacular weather. This week is another short week, but packed with learning and adventures. It's hard to believe, but we are in the thick of budget season for next year. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the January HSA General meeting and shared his or her priorities for next year's budget.
I have been working with DCPS and the LSAT committee to finalize our allocations for 2017-2018. As some of you know, our budget allocation is based upon our projected enrollment, which is 796 students for next year.
As some of you may not know, this year's budget allocation (2016-2017) included a shortfall. Like several other DCPS schools in our area, our actual enrollment exceeded our projections, thus leaving us with a sizable deficit in our budget.
To this end, I will be sharing specifics for this year's and last year's budget at the HSA General Meeting on March 2nd . Your attendance is extremely important. It's important that we all stay informed as we work collaboratively as a school and HAS to align our budgets to maximize support for our students and teachers. The HSA General Membership will be asked to vote to support the potential financial need for additional support for the school if we find ourselves in need as we near the end of the school year.
I want to extend my sincere thanks to the HSA Board and Membership. Because of your donations, resources, and time, our teachers and students have all that they need. Our students continue to have incredible learning experiences, field trips, extra-curricular activities, and current learning materials. The HSA has also supported our "move" into the building in ways too numerous to list. For that, every student, teacher, and staff member is incredibly grateful.
I'm also grateful that we continue to "give back" to those in need.
Please don't forget to join us for our 2nd Annual Comfort Cases packing event on Sunday, 2/26.
This event hosted by "Lafayette Gives Back" will run from 1 pm - 4 pm as we pack resources for kids in the foster care system. Please see the
or your room parent email for additional details.
I also want to take a moment to highlight the work of our 4th and 5th grade Student Council students.
These leaders in our school have been incredibly active over the past several months. Led by teacher Stephanie Moore, our Student Council has donated over 200 boxes of cereal to a local food bank, hosted concession stands to support our basketball teams, and are working to help sponsor an upcoming assembly for our students to learn from a prominent voice on mindfulness - JusTme
The Student Council has also revived our recycling program. They are true leaders working for their school, their peers, and the environment. Keep up the great work!
Here's to a great week full of field trips (4th Grade to MD Science Center), informances (2nd Grade Wax Museum) and our annual Jump Rope for Heart events.
We look forward to seeing you soon - at Jump Rope for Heart, Comfort Cases, and/or at the HSA General meeting on 3/2 at 7 pm.
Take good care,
Jump Rope for Heart News
